Default Doctor Who (split series in 2011, seven episodes in spring, six in autumn)

[Part 01]
[Part 02]
[Part 03]

The BBC will reveal the newly revamped series 5 logo tomorrow morning at 8AM GMT (making that 2AM CST).

We exclusively reveal new logo on Tuesday at 08:00!

Quote:
Doctor Who has engaged and amazed a global audience for over forty years, constantly raising the bar and regenerating to deliver new and compelling adventures. It's all change again in 2010 with Matt Smith playing the Eleventh Doctor, Karen Gillan onboard as companion Amy Pond and a brilliant, brand new logo!

On one level, the logo is the iconic image that represents Doctor Who. But it's much more than that - it becomes an icon that is recognised from Cardiff to California, an emblem of excitement, humour, scary monsters, brave companions and the Doctor! And so the new logo must be stylish, fresh, distinctive and bold. Must be. And will be. See for yourself when we reveal it exclusively, on this site at 8am on Tuesday, 6th October!

In the meantime, take a look at what the new logo must live up to, with our exclusive video showcasing the current and previous logos. Or step back in time in our gallery that gives you every logo with a little info on each... which was your logo?
I suppose we can take it as read that we'll also be getting a new opening title sequence and a new theme tune arrangement, too (unless they intend to simply replace the previous logo with the new one, but I think that would depend on what the new logo looks like).

ADDED:
The BBC is also running a feature on previous logos:

Quote:

1963 -1967
The logo that introduced the first episode of Doctor Who back in 1963 was featured throughout the First Doctor's era. It was last used in 1967, on the opening credits to The Moonbase.

1967 - 69
This logo debuted in the 1967 adventure, The Macra Terror and featured for the rest of the Second Doctor's era. It made its final appearance in episode ten of the 1969 epic, The War Games.

1970 - 73
Back in 1970, this logo ushered in the first episode of Doctor Who broadcast in colour! It was used during the Third Doctor's era, from Spearhead from Space to the 1973 adventure, The Green Death.

1973 - 1980
This logo made its first appearance in the story that introduced Sarah Jane Smith - the 1973/74 classic, The Time Warrior. Known as the 'diamond logo' it featured throughout the Third Doctor's final series and for almost all of the Fourth Doctor's era.

1980 - 1984
The first new logo of the 1980s proved a radical departure from previous designs. It exploded onto our screens in the Fourth Doctor's 1980 adventure, The Leisure Hive, and featured throughout the Fifth's Doctor's era.

1984 - 86
The sixth logo debuted in 1984 but differed only slightly to its predecessor with a fractionally chunkier lettering and a subtle bowing of the bar underlining 'Who'. It was last used in the final episode of the Sixth Doctor's swansong, The Trial of a Time Lord.

1987 - 89
This logo was featured throughout the Seventh Doctor's era, debuting in 1987's Time and the Rani. Although it was last seen regularly in 1989 the logo was also featured in a celebratory mini-story back in 1993.

1996
The eighth logo comprised a simple design that harked back to the early 70s. It featured in the 1996 movie involving the Seventh and Eighth Doctors.

2005 - 06
New series! New logo! This bold, bright and stylish logo was first seen in the story that introduced us to the Ninth Doctor and Rose in 2005.

The Current Logo
The opening title sequence of the 2006 Christmas Special, The Runaway Bride, became the first to incorporate this design. It contains slightly more background detail than its predecessor and a touch more background flare. It can next be seen in the forthcoming special, The Waters of Mars!

...is when we exclusively reveal the new logo!

ADDED:
And the new Doctor Who logo is...

Quote:

It's here! To watch our exclusive video with the new logo - and embed it in your website - visit the top right link. If you want to save the image as wallpaper or share it with your friends, click on 'Download the New Logo'.

When the new series of Doctor Who begins in 2010 there'll be a new Doctor, a new companion and a new logo - as seen above.

Before that we have three fantastic specials to look forward to, beginning with The Waters of Mars.

And don't forget you can view all the previous logos, either in an exclusive video or our latest gallery, and the new logo is available to download as wallpaper. Just check out the links on the right!

1440 x 900
1024 x 768
800 x 600
First impression: I like it. I don't love it like I did the taxi cab logo when it was revealed in 2005, but it feels nice and classic. Like that they've stacked "Doctor" on top of "Who", and I dig the TARDIS-shaped "DW" (although I doubt that'll be a part of the on-screen graphic).

This leaves me feeling 100% positive that we'll get a new title sequence in 2010. I can't envision this logo worked into the current one.

Oh lordy, on top of the logo we've got some mightly juicy set reports.

Matt Smith is on set in David's costume again. I'll say no more without spoiler tags. The following is all retrieved from Gallifrey Base, but names are hard to come by there:

Quote:
AAAARRRGGHH!!! Matt and Karen rehearsing on location. Matt wearing Ten's suit (no jacket, same tie as final specials).

Yes, Karen is a policewoman. It's quite an outfit.

----------

"One of our youngest set reporters (Nubia) heard Amy say something to the Doctor about "12 years of therapy""

"They're now performing behind a reflective screen to make it look sunnier. But it means we can't see anything. Ah well."

"Great physicality from Matt. Throwing himself around. He just jumped into that flowerbed by the White House. Good thing they're fake!"

"The filming with MS+KG is by the White House. Something else is happening on the green, where the fire engine is parked by the pub. "

"Extras seem to be frozen in place on the green, holding their mobiles out as if taking a picture. Reminds me of Rise Of The Cybermen"

"There was an actor on the green earlier who I think was Arthur Darvill from Little Dorritt. He was dressed in hospital scrubs."

line from Matt: "I've got 20 minuets to save the world and the Post Office is closed!"

Now filming a scene where the sun disappears. Karen "What's happening, why's it going dark?"

In the duckpond scene, it looked like The Doctor was suffering from some sort of post regeneration trauma. Lots of jerky spasms

At the location right now; not much to see, they're rehearsing/recording scenes of transfixed extras gazing skyward and pointing their mobile phones. Taken some video footage and may post it on my blog later but it's not hugely interesting. The names 'marcello' and 'bosley' (?) are being bandied about a lot by the director, who I don't recognize. Danny Hargreaves is on location.
Quote:
The scene in my pics (and the ones on the SFX site) involved the Doctor and Amy hurrying up a lane, and running across to the icecream van. Then the Doctor ran off, jumped over the flowerbed at the side of the White House, and ran inside. Amy ran after him, but took the more conventional route through the front gate. I couldn't hear the dialogue, but others have posted snippets on Twitter using the #dwsr tag. As they came up the lane, the Doctor shouted something about a "cricket bat" and another fan thought she heard Amy say something about "12 years of therapy". Someone else reckoned they thought the Doctor said he was having food cravings - which I guess might be post-regeneration trauma

This is the sort of scene that they cover from multiple angles, which is why it took them the entire 4 hours I was there to film it!

- Alun

PS I will be posting more pics later - from the icecream van scene and between takes - but it's going to take me a while to sort them. I won't post anything of the scenes on the green that I was asked not to, though. Hope you understand.
See photos here and here.

So exciting!

ADDED:
Or maybe Amy isn't actually a police woman:

Quote:
Not much we can add to the reports today from Alun and via twitter. All we can add is that we overheard that Amy's outfit is actually a hen night oufit, so maybe Ian Levine's rumourings are on the money. Anyway, enjoy the pictures. I particularly like the ones of The Doctor having a spasm when sitting on the edge of the pond - he says to Amy: "I'm not ready for all this....I'm not done!". Post regenerative stress no doubt!

Oh and amongst the extras seemed to be a unknown Doctor in scrubs and a fireman with a large dog - both inoccous you might think, but they weren't ferried away like normal extras - so larger parts for them?

ADDED:
The BBC Press Office confirms that the words and insignia are two different elments that will serve different functions:

Quote:
The official Doctor Who website this morning offered an exclusive first look at the new Doctor Who logo, which will accompany Matt Smith's on-screen debut as The Doctor in spring 2010.

The logo is the 11th to have been used on screen in the show's history.

Accompanying the logo at bbc.co.uk/doctorwho is an animated insignia of the show's initials, which will be used as branding for the new series in conjunction with the logo.

Steven Moffat, the new Lead Writer and Executive Producer, said: "A new logo. The 11th logo for the 11th Doctor – those grand old words, Doctor Who, suddenly looking newer than ever.

"And, look at that, something really new – an insignia! DW in TARDIS form! Simple and beautiful, and most important of all, a completely irresistible doodle.

"I apologise to school notebooks everywhere, because in 2010 that's what they're going to be wearing."

The logo, and a collection of old Doctor Who logos, is available to the media from BBC Picture Publicity website.

The new series of Doctor Who will premiere in spring 2010.

The final three episodes featuring David Tennant will be broadcast later this year on BBC One, with the existing logo on-screen.

ADDED:
New Twitter coming in from the set:

Quote:
"Duck pond has not flooded [due to rainy weather] . And karen is definately a police woman not fancy dress as thought yesterday"

I'm not quite sure about going back to an up-and-down (I dunno, just never sat right with me, it always makes me think Doctor WHO, too out of proportion) and the blue's a bit too cold... but man, do I adore the "DW" TARDIS.

The stacked logo seems natural to me I think because, aside from the RTD era, that's how it's always been. Not that I think the side-by-side text looked wrong, I really like the taxi cab logo, but going back to stacking the logo doesn't feel wrong.

ADDED:
Incidentally, Alex -- you may not have to worry about the logo being stacked in the opening titles.

Quote:
There is a widescreen version with the text in one line.

It's already been created and has been released by the BBC on their press images site.
It hasn't been posted by those who have access to that site for fear of getting wrists slapped and losing professional access rights (which are kind of needed for the job!)... But this single line version will surely turn up soon enough.

The DW Tardis sits between the words 'Doctor' and 'Who' on the one line version of the title, with the BBC logo sitting beneath 'Who'.

There is also an image of the DW Tardis logo with 'BBC' and '2010' beneath it as some kind of teaser slide.
I imagine that if the single line version isn't used in the opening titles, it'll be used before the "NEXT TIME" trailers (maybe in the same way the taxi logo is used).

Doctor Who logo update

Quote:
A quick update. This alternative arrangement of the logo has gone up gone the BBC publicity site, so maybe that answers our earlier question about how the logo might appear in the opening titles. Or maybe not. And we've also been contacted by the BBC to tell us that the the "Doctor Who" lettering should be referred to as "the logo" while the police box graphic is "the insignia". So no you know. Although presumably Steven Moffat didn't when he wrote his comment in the official press release…

I'd have made the insignia smaller than the text, but otherwise I think I like it.

During on-location filming today, Matt was seen to whip out the sonic screwdriver, only it's the previous sonic screwdriver, not the new version he's been seen using on set previously. Apparently it's shown to be faulty, and even blows out entirely. Suppose this is leading up to the new model.

I'm in two minds about the logo. I love the insignia, and can't wait to see it adorning walls of every good toy store, colourful as Who's always been in amongst the dullness.

The logo seems a little like... They've grabbed a new font, and slapped on a gradient. Although maybe that's just the way it's shown in the original image. It seems to look different on the widescreen picture. I suppose the real truth will be revealed when it's shown in context rather than on a basic black background.

I sort of think it might come onto the screen as big 3D letters -- sort of like the TO BE CONTINUED at the end of The Stolen Earth, only with a different animation.

ADDED:
Richard Curtis has confirmed that his episode will feature Vincent van Gogh.

There's lovely!

ADDED:
Click here to see the "original" TARDIS on location at what is apparently Amy's garden in the 1990s.

And here's the description that goes with it.

Quote:
Yes, this is the Series 4 TARDIS, so it can't get totally destroyed in the Xmas Specials.

Spoke to another GB member who has been there all morning. She told me that there has been smoke pouring out of it at times. Not sure if she saw this, or just heard it from behind the vans but MS was shouting "I must save it/her!" and KG was holding him back.

Apparently it's been there "since Monday", with Llandaff providing the perfect distraction I suppose. I was told that the TARDIS crash lands on top of a shed before coming to rest where it is.

As I arrived, MS and KG were being whisked away for lunch. There's a Base behind the local school I think. With the weather this good today, I think they're doing more exteriors after lunch. They're also apparently there all next week.
Sweet! Another crash landing scene. Can't get enough of those.

ADDED:
For the techies who're interested in that kind of thing, information about the cameras used to film this series:

Quote:
It's either a Sony F23 or an F35. Both are high-end cameras aimed at digital cinema and high-end drama shooting and look identical except for the lens mounts. There a step up from the cameras used to record Torchwood and (I think) Planet of the Dead. I'm almost certain it is the F23 though (judging by the lens), which is used to shoot shows like 'Damages', 'Dexter' and 'Gossip Girl' in the US (for completeness, the F35 is used to shoot Bones and CSI:Miami, and CSI:NY --all three of which have switched from 35mm film). It's possible it is an F35, as Take2 aren't listing any F23's for rent on their website.

Neither camera has a recording medium built-in, but are both capable of being docked to the Sony SRW-1 HDCamSR tape deck, which can be seen stuck to the back on the images. This records a very nice, clean, nearly uncompressed image, almost certainly 10-bit 4:4:4 which makes compositing a lot simpler (and hence, cheaper) and gives a lot more opportunity to diddle around with the images in post.

Indeed, terrible news. It's almost impossible to imagine what Who would be like today without him. Reading the wonderful messages people have left on Gallifrey Base make me wish I'd met him. That in itself is a glowing tribute. How rare is it to find someone who the usually brutal swarm of Doctor Who fans won't say a bad word about? Truly a loss.

It's a sad day for fandom, indeed. His era was my brother's favorite, and my second favorite until the 2005 re-launch. RIP, Barry.

Can't think of many people who would say anything brutal about Verity Lambert (even before her unfortunate passing). So that's two.

When it was announced there was no Children in Need special this year, a lot of people assumed that Special Project #03 was dead. Well, it's still alive and kicking:

Canon-affecting? What could it be. Oh bother.

EDIT: I know it's a very common thing, but it's very exciting to see my own words staring back at me in the "And You Texted Us To Say..." section of theletters page in DWM.

Just wanted to point out that the TARDIS console competition is mentioned in Doctor Who Magazine, and apparently it's made quite clear in the contest description that while the winning console will appear in the show, it does not belong to the Doctor's TARDIS.

So it would appear that the notion of flicking through the desk top theme is running along the wrong avenue. Wonder what context in which it will appear?

Given that, its inclusion of everyday items on the console is a plot point I'm thinking a homemade TARDIS or something like that.

The thing is I think that's too obvious. If they were going to bring back the Time Lords or give the Master a TARDIS or whatever, I doubt they'd practically give it away by saying "There's going to be a TARDIS console that's not the Doctor's next year." No, the bit about household appliances makes me think this is a make-shift, homemade TARDIS, either by the Doctor or another character.

The contest is worded a bit confusingly. In one sentence they say it needs to look like the Doctor hammered it together with things from the kitchen, but in another it says the thing isn't in the Doctor's TARDIS. So just how this will play into the plot, I haven't a clue. Not even a guess.
