Default Friday the 13th DVD/BD Discussion

Last page here.

With the discussion nearly reaching 1000 posts, it was time to open a new one. Talk it up bitches... er... I mean kind people

What we know so far:

From Bloody-Disgusting:

Quote:
BD: And I understand Paramount is going to release special editions of a few more of the films now?

Farrands: Yeah, after we finished His Name Was Jason, I was contacted by a guy who produces the special features for many of the Paramount DVDs, and he had been searching for a guy who really understands the franchise. And I think they had run into some issues on the reissues of Parts 1-3, and Paramount wanted to do new things, new material for 4-6, and consequently we'll be doing 7 and 8. They wanted somebody with a lot of knowledge to bring something new to the table. And after the things we didn't get on our show, it was a great opportunity for me to come in and work with the people who actually own this material and be able to give fans more of what they want. I can't promise that it will have everything that everybody has always wanted to see, but we're getting there. We're making progress. We've found some amazing things that nobody has ever taken the time to look for. My editor Andrew Kasch and I have just been scavenging the lowest dregs of the Paramount vaults to find the things that fans want to see. We've have limited success with some things, but we're working on it and believe me, there's so much passion behind it. We're doing our best to put something out that will hopefully make the fans more satisfied than they were with the previous versions that Paramount put out.

BD: Anything specific you can tell us that we might see?

Farrands: It's still being worked out, I can't say a lot. There will be some scenes, especially in part 4, that fans will be VERY interested in seeing. That's all I can say right now. But there are quite a few clips that have been recently uncovered thanks to our work. And it was a lot of work!

BD: And when will those be in stores?

Farrands: 4-6 will be coming out in June, I've been told. And 7 and 8 will come out after that, and I am hearing there will be a new boxed set before the end of the year, but I don't know if that is official yet.
Also from BD:

Quote:
This past Tuesday Paramount Home Entertainment released the original Friday the 13th on Blu-ray, while sticking parts 2 and 3 on DVD (again). We learned over the weekend that Paramount is already prepping to release a brand new box set including the first eight Friday the 13th films on Blu-ray. Much like the 2004 DVD release "From Crystal Lake to Manhattan", the box set will include the first eight films, as Jason Goes to Hell, Jason X and Freddy vs Jason were made by New Line Cinema. No word on if they'll be uncut or not - let us pray.

Alright, since the old box set thread basically just contained any and all DVD discussion, this is now the official discussion for any upcoming Friday the 13th DVD/Blu-ray releases.

Ok cool. As I mentioned in the other thread, someone on Amazon.com said they spoke to a Paramount rep and claimed they were informed the Blu-ray's for Part 2 and 3 were being released in the US in June. I know the UK Blu-ray's are available now on Amazon US but, I don't want those. I want the official US versions and will happily wait 'til June.

So out of 4,5,6 How much improvement is left for better picture and sound quality ?

I know that part 4 has alot a room for picture quality improvement.

I'm really looking forward to The Final Chapter in HD. A few shots seem a bit dark, and the overall picture quality is not great.

I do hope they fix 2 scenes that are messed up on the current DVD (from the box set).

1. When Jason crashes through the window and grabs Tina, the brightness/color shifts for a second.

2. When Doug is in the bathroom showering, Jason turns off the light, but the picture stays the same (it doesnt get darker after the light turns off).

Kinda weird, so hopefully they are fixed.

TFC looked somewhat dreadful on DVD, compaired to the ones that came before it.

While I thought part III had the best transition (ever) from VHS to DVD, I thought TFC looked pretty much just like my VHS. Even the clips they show at the beginning, you can see the difference in quality right there (Chris axing Jason scene looked horrible).

And yes Penhall, Doug's shower scene is a perfect example of how little care was given to the DVD. When I show friends TFC, nobody ever believes me at first when I say "Jason just turned off the lights in there."

While TFC certainly featured the weakest transfer of the Paramount films, there's no way it's on the level of VHS. It does have some significant errors (like those mentioned above), but, on the whole, the transfer is pretty good.

Well shit, this is great news.
I hate the idea of buying multiple copies of the same film and have not done it to this point, but if 4 and 6 are getting new material I may get rid of my old copies and pick up the new ones.

You know, I am actually interested in the Parts 4 and 5 discs. The reasons are: with Part 4 we will hopefully get a better transfer without all the screw ups, and with Part 5 we are getting the fan commentary and I want to hear the fans get super nasty and perverted during the tits scenes. That is going to be funny as HELL! Isn't one of the fans on the fan commentary going to be that woman who runs a website from the documentary His Name was Jason. Actually, if SHE gets all perverted during the nudity, that wouldn't be funny...that'll be damn sexy!! I hope it's the one who said, "If Roger Ebert said it was immoral (two thumbs up)."

I know that the line of reasoning for not doing cast commentaries is that they (the cast) don't remember much about the movies. I don't exactly understand this. I think it's fascinating to learn what the people involved remember just as much as what they don't remember. And you learn things that would never come out during some interview.

To me, fan commentaries seem far less classy. And who knows what they'll say.

Im not sure TV scenes alone will thrill fans but it would be a cool addition.

Seems like part 4 has the most TV scenes.

I think the very best option would be to offer 2 versions of 4,5,6. 1 being the T cut and the other being a extended cut with cut footage and TV scenes.

I'm not really looking forward to the fan commentaries. If TM, DM, & Esten were doing 'em, that would be a different story. Moderated by Old Boo Radley.

Man, that'd be some wild shit. That's all I'm going to say. I dunno if Boo would make it long before they tried to censor him; probably around the time he started talking about licking some broad's asshole.

When does Terri arrive in part 2? That's when the "man, I'd like to play around in that asshole" talk would start up. Not to mention my spot-on Dice impression of "ca-reepin' up her fo'ckin' aaaa-yaa-sss" from The Diceman Cometh whenever she's walking in the woods.

We'd have to schedule a break when the guy comes to get Esten to sign his parole papers.

I just heard from another board that theyve uncovered a bunch of deleted/alternate footage and the alternate ending to part 3 in the paramount vaults.I heard a lot about 4.

If that is legit, it would be great. But it just seems so far fetched about the Part 3 footage. I mean, if I am wrong, I will happily admit so.

We pretty much know everything we'll ever know about the films with the two books and documentary. The fan commentaries will probably give us a real feeling of watching the film with someone, especially if we watch them alone. It's like, we're all enjoying the film together kind of thing. There are fans out there who know more about the films then the cast themselves so it isn't all that far fetched. What are we going to do when the films get to be 70 years old? The Universal monster films have commentaries with "film historians" which is just another way of saying "fan."

I don't think the word "class" should ever come into play in reguards to Friday the 13th. Friday the 13th is more about being anti-class and in your face brutal.

Jason runs in Parts 2, 3, 4, and in one scene in Freddy vs. Jason. He also had to run to get a start with velocity so that he can jump through the window like he did in Part 7. Nobody can convince me otherwise.

Robert Englund once said that when off screen, Jason hauls ass. I'm starting to agree.

Interesting about the alt. Part 3 ending rumor. I've heard waaaay back that it was never actually filmed, just set up and stills were taken (the stills are up on www.fridaythe13thfilms.com). I'd gladly be wrong on that, but I have heard that before.

If that turns out to be true, and if we do get something good from part IV (got my fingers crossed on the Mrs. Jarvis bathtub incident), we'll have at least one good, juicy BTS footage from most of the movies. The gore trims don't interest me that much (although the uncut MBV was amazing), but I'm more interested in seeing images that correspond to scrapped scenes or sidestories that didn't make it into the final product. I'm really interested in the form these movies almost took.

Sounds like the guys are doing a great job! Hopefully, they can dust something off from 2, 5, and 8 as well.

I didn't think there ever was a Friday the 13th laser disc. I thought the only films that ever made laser disc were acadamy award winners or films that said Lucus Films on them.
