Default Resident Evil (RE5: Lost in Nightmares DLC now out)

I don't think I've been blown away from a game preview before but this looks amazing:

http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/734/734381/vids_1.html

I don't have a PS3 yet but this alone looks like it'll be worth the purchase.

I downloaded a hi-res MOV version of the trailer at gametreailers.com (they don't charge you to watch them like IGN sometimes does) and it looks quite good. I'm more and more convinced with each new bit of footage that the guy in the game is in fact Billy Cohen.

I'm not sure if those models and backround are in-game and have been scripted. These trailers have been out for a while and I've seen them a few times and am still blown away. Hopefully it is in-game.

This trailer (only about a minute and five seconds long) is new. It was only unveiled at E3, and was put up on Game Trailers on the 11th. That's apparently in-game footage.

RE5 is set 10 years before the events at Racoon city. The main character is Chris Redfield. The cool lighting effect will be part of the games mechanics. Like opening a door from a dark room to a lighted outside will get blurry eyed.
Stuff like that.

The game isn't set 10 years before the events at Raccoon City, it's set after the fall of Umbrella (Wesker's new organization is meant to be involved in RE 5).

The game does star Chris Redfield, but he's working with a new organization after the Raccoon City incident.

From IGN.com:
Quote:
US, July 18, 2007 - Being able to see new footage of Resident Evil 5 was one of our E3 highlights, even though the new trailer didn't really tell us too much about the game. Enter the latest issue of Famitsu, which is home to an interview in which producer Jun Takeuchi shared some of the details we were looking for.

Takeuchi only provided vague hints about the storyline. As many have guessed from the insignia that appears in the footage, main character Chris Redfield is a member of a group called BSAA. According to Takeuchi, something has happened in the desert area that serves as the game's setting, and BSAA has dispatched Chris to investigate.

Once on the scene, Chris encounters a new form of enemy. Takeuchi described the game's enemies as something of human form that has intelligence. However, the foes are neither zombie nor ganado (in reference to the creatures from RE4).

In addition to the new enemy, a certain girl will make an appearance in the game. She's someone whom fans of the series will recognize. In the full version of the E3 trailer (which will be distributed on Xbox Live and PSN later this month), she appears just briefly, but Takeuchi expects her to have a more significant role in the next trailer (no ETA given on that, unfortunately). In the game proper, she will have a big part both in the story and as part of the gameplay.

On the topic of gameplay systems, Takeuchi admitted to the magazine that the hardest part of development so far has been in mixing new elements with part 4's basic gameplay. For the most part, RE5 will be played from a perspective similar to that of part 4, with Chris appearing on the left side of the screen. However, Takeuchi also promised a big surprise addition that he believes is an obvious evolution for the gameplay.

According to Takeuchi, if, after seeing the E3 trailer, you feel RE5 looks like RE4 now, you'll be left with a completely different impression following the next trailer.

Previously, Takeuchi has spoken about the importance of light in the game. In this latest interview, he offered an example of how light will play a role. Say Chris enters a doorless building. The surroundings are bright and the interior is dark, so it takes Chris a few moments to adapt before he can see. The game will replicate this, along with the opposite effect of going into a bright area after being in the dark for an extended period. This is where you can expect to encounter some of the series' trademark fear, this time from the inability to aim or see.

Takeuchi wouldn't provide a solid release date for RE5, but there seemed to be some consensus of it appearing some time before 2010. It will be a long wait, but then again so was the wait for RE4, and that one turned out pretty good.
The fact that we might not see this game until 2009 does not sit well with me. I wish they could put out a proper Resident Evil sequel that doesn't come out 5-10 years after the previous one.

J. Thomas Jeans, beat me to it.
Anyway, appearing some time before 2010. Give me a break.
I don't even want to think about having to wait another 2+ years for this.

IGN confirms that Chris Redfield is the lead, but it says he's working with a new group, not that it's set during his time in the Air Force (which it would be if it was set 10 years before the first game... or he might even still be a teenager by that point).

I have no problem with it being Chris.
It was the 10 years before Racoon City part that was bothering me.
If they did a game that far back in the past I doubt it would be numbered(RE -10), it would probably get subtitled.

And it also wouldn't feature a Chris Redfield that is noticeably older than the last time we saw him in Code Veronica X. Like I said, if it was set ten years ago, he'd either be in the Air Force or he would be training to join the Air Force. It's obvious in Resident Evil that Chris has never encountered anything like what he's seen in the mansion before. It was take one hell of a retcon to make it work.

Resident Evil 5 scans, including images of the as-yet unnamed female character:

Someone has put-up high-resolution scans of Resident Evil 5, including a large breasted female character (what's with Capcom and the big boobies?), up on their Gametrailers.com account. There's plenty of never-before-seen ones (possibly from the upcoming full-length trailer). Check 'em out Here.

I'm liking the great "RE4" feeling I'm getting from the over the shoulder pics (at the bottum of pages 13 and 15.)

The basic mechanics are apparently meant to mime RE4, but they're beefing them up and adding new things to the mix. They said one new feature is really going to jazz the fans up. Can't wait to find out what it is.

As for the female character -- if she's a returning character from a previous game, my money is solidly on Jill Valentine. She looks a lot like a revamped Jill from the remake.

Wait so this isn't coming out till '09? Damn. I really hope the next Resident Evil after 5 goes back to the whole zombie aspect. Like the old RE. I loved those games.

After playing RE4, going back to slow zombies as enemies would be boring. Unless there were packs of Crimson Head zombies chasing you down.

There's no reason slow zombies have to be boring -- as The Umbrella Chronicles is going to prove, I think (looking at the 5 minute long game play video I've got, I'd say there's no way that game is going to be boring, but then it has the distinct advantage of being able to send 15-30 zombies at you in a single room).

Resident Evil 5 is utilizing a new kind of enemy. They're not zombies nor are they Ganados (according to Mikami). I think they're going to be some kind of new hybrid monster, creatures spawned from some sick merging of the t-virus with the plagas (if Wesker ever managed to get his hands on a sample, that is).

Resident Evil has evolved -- the story revolves around the new organization -- known only as S -- and Wesker's attempts to resurrect Umbrella from the ashes.

Besides, according to the folks at Capcom, Resident Evil 5 is meant to be the final chapter in the (proper) series.

Wait so no more? That sucks, I think they could make zombies scary again. Make them run maybe?

So I just found out today that this won't be coming until 2009 (I apparently didn't get the memo at E3). That's disappointing, but at least you know it should be high quality.

That's the rumor. I was hoping for a late 2008 release, but now they're saying, "Well, it should be before 2010." If they pull a Resident Evil 4 and delay this thing until 2012, I'm going to be really aggravated.

The things already shuffle like madmen, especially in the Game Cube remake. Now imagine doing away with the one or two zombies per room rule that afflicted the earlier games. The Umbrella Chronicles features as many as 15-30 zombies per room. With that many fast-shuffling flesh eaters, I think it's safe to say the tension level could be kept pretty high. Add Crimson Head's to the mix, and you've got a formula for trouble.

Not that I think they'll ever go back to using zombies full time. If Resident Evil 5 is the last proper sequel, I'm sure well get follow-ups in the a form like the net Onimusha game -- a spin-off sort of sequel.

They're not zombies. The series ditched the zombies with Resident Evil 4. Takeuchi said that the creatures in this game are neither Zombie nor Ganado.

I'm downloading the extended trailer right now -- fucking streaming, download the HD trailer here; they've got it in both MOV and WMV -- and I'll post back after I've watched it.

I'm intrigued by the idea that the gameplay will be based on the Resident Evil 4 model, but will implement "thematics" from the original Resident Evil, whatever the hell that means.

I'm also curious about Takeuchi's comments that the game's tone is being fashioned after the film Black Hawk Down. That wouldn't have been my first choice for inspiration whilst working on a Resident Evil game.

According to Takeuchi, the game is set 10 years after Resident Evil, and will explore Chris' life during the ten year interval between the two games.

Also, it seems that when Takeuchi took over, the game became less a direct sequel to Resident Evil 4 and more a direct sequel to Resident Evil, so there's no telling what seeds sewn in RE 4 will be dumped from RE 5.

I do like that while the ganados were pretty spry, the enemies in RE 5 look like they're going to be flat out fast. We're talking Infected (28 Days Later) fast.

That extended trailer was amazing.

I've changed my mind about who the woman is. I don't think it's Jill Valentine. Based on the way that those villagers seem to be infecting one another (it looks like they drop something in the mouth which goes down the throat and infects you), I'm thinking the woman in the tube is Sherry Birkin. She was 12 at the time of the Raccoon City incident, which would make her 22 during this game. According to her character profile in Resident Evil 3, it says the Government has taken Sherry into custody, but in Wesker's Report, Wesker says that Sherry is "safe in our hands."

I'm almost willing to bet money that the woman is Sherry Birkin.

That theory is so sound I've tagged it as a spoiler for you Jans

Personally I like it, I could easily live with it being her.

The trailer is downloading to my PC right now so I'll give you my opinion when I've had a chance to watch it.
