I wonder how they're going to explain The Doctor in the Star Trek universe. Are they just going to say that this is what the 24th Century looks like in The Doctor's universe for this story, or are they going to have The Doctor travel to an alternate timeline? Those do exist in his mythos. Personally, I kind of prefer the latter. By having The Doctor travel to another universe you get to put him in the position of getting to see things that he's never seen before. I think that would be an opportunity that would tickle The Doctor pink.

Also, it seems to me like The Borg are a bit more powerful and sophisticated than The Cybermen. I wonder what they would have to gain from such an alliance. It seems to me like they would have much more to gain from an alliance with The Dalaks if such an alliance were possible (just look at how easily they toasted The Cybermen back when they both invaded the Earth).

It seems to me like The Borg would rather attack The Cybermen, assimilate them, and take on some of their characteristics. I admit, I am intrigued by the idea of a Borg/Cyberman hybrid.

Still, I'm interested in seeing how this turns out.

Moffat has tweeted a photo from the set, revealing that when the Daleks return this series, the classic 60s style will be making an appearance:

A member of the crew who works on FX has been tweeting about them as well, saying there was more than just the one on set.

I don't know if this prop is the same size as the old ones, but if so, I'd forgotten just how... small... the classic Daleks were. I don't remember them being so short!

Man, you can really tell we're gearing up for the 50th anniversary.

is he trying to make the iDaleks look better by pointing out the originals look a bit crap? Because that's why RTD did a brilliant modern re-design that *kept* to the classic look...

Speaking of RTD, it seems he's shipped his own original Dalek prop out to be used in the show, too. They've been tweeting about it.

That link is great, DV.

In other news, some spoilers about plot points in series 7 have landed courtesy of set-spotters:

It seems Amy and Rory's relationship might be in trouble. They've filmed scenes of the pair having a row outside their home, and Rory has been seeing with divorce documents in another outdoor scene.

Researchers at Dundee University claim to have invented a real-life Doctor Who-style sonic screwdriver.

The prototype machine has successfully used ultrasound waves to lift and rotate a rubber disc floating in a cylinder of water - the first time ultrasound has been made to turn objects rather than simply push them - but physicists performing the research believe it can achieve a lot more.

"Like Doctor Who's own device, our sonic screwdriver is capable of much more than just spinning things around," said Dr Mike MacDonald of the Institute for Medical Science and Technology at Dundee.

Surgeons already use ultrasound to treat patients without the need for surgery, but the ability to steer objects such as drug capsules to precise locations could make the technique even more effective.

"This experiment not only confirms a fundamental physics theory but also demonstrates a new level of control over ultrasound beams which can also be applied to non-invasive ultrasound surgery, targeted drug delivery and ultrasonic manipulation of cells," said Dr MacDonald.

Although younger viewers will be more familiar with Doctor Who's sonic screwdriver as a tool for unlocking doors and repairing electronic equipment, episodes from the classic series have seen it used as a medical scanner.

Christopher Eccleston spoke briefly about his short tenure on the show this week:

Quote:
Some of his facility for comedy was evident in the grinning eccentricity he brought to Doctor Who. But that only lasted a series. And puzzlement continues as to why he left before he had a chance to own the role.

When prodded to speak further about this, he is amicably terse. “I know what went on and the people who were involved know what went on – that’s good enough for me.”

He half-smiles, half-grimaces. “My conscience is completely clear. I’ve lived my life, particularly my working life, on the basis that I have to be able to look at myself in the mirror about the way I behave. It wasn’t a bold move, it was an entirely natural one. I’m hugely grateful to the children who to this day come up and talk to me about the show.”
I really wonder what in hell happened during Eccleston's year? You never hear anyone else who's acted on the show even hint at inner turmoil. This is one of those things I expect to come out some day in a book or something.

David Warner to star in Doctor Who

Quote:
Actor David Warner is to guest star in an upcoming episode of Doctor Who.

The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine reports that the veteran actor will take a role in a story penned by Who stalwart, Mark Gatiss, which is part of the recording block currently being completed in Cardiff.

Warner has had a long and illustrious acting career appearing in films such as The Omen, Time Bandits, Tron, The Lost World, Titanic and Planet of the Apes. He has appeared in the Star Trek films The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country as well as playing Gul Madred in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Although Warner has not appeared on television in Doctor Who before, he has lent his vocal talents to the series when he provided the voice of Lord Azlok in the animated adventure Dreamland, first shown in 2009. He has also appeared in many audio plays for Big Finish Productions, where he has played an alternative version of The Doctor.

The story, due for transmission in early 2013, will be the fifth script for the series by Mark Gatiss, whose last script, Night Terrors, was shown last year. Gatiss told Doctor Who Magazine he was thrilled to be writing for the Eleventh Doctor once more, this time alongside his new companion played by Jenna Louise Coleman. It will be directed by Douglas MacKinnon who directed The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky in 2008.

The story will also star Irish actor Liam Cunningham, who has appeared in a number of film and television productions including A Little Princess, First Knight, Jude, Dog Soldiers, The Wind that Shakes the Barley, Clash of the Titans, The Guard and the BBC One science-fiction drama series Outcasts.

Two guest stars have also been confirmed for the previous episode recorded, the first to be filmed with Jenna-Louise Coleman. Written by Luther creator Neil Cross and directed by Jamie Payne, both of whom are making their début on Doctor Who, the episode will star Dougray Scott and Jessica Raine.

Scott is a Scottish actor who has appeared in films such as Enigma, Desperate Housewives and, recently, in My Week With Marilyn , while Raine is best known for playing the lead role of nurse Jenny Lee in the BBC1 drama series Call The Midwife.

It also has "every Dalek ever used on the show" in it, and will show us a characteristic of the Daleks we've never seen before.

I'd say the strategy has worked: a year without the Daleks has made me actually want to see 'em again.

Okay, Jeans, I need your help. I have been watching the show on Netflix, and I just watched the Series 4 Finale, 'The Next Doctor." Netflix then jumps right into series 5 with a new Doctor. I realize there are 3 or 4 special episodes, but the only ones available on netflix are the 2 parts of "The end of time". Any clue where i can get ahold of the other specials?

The Waters of Mars is also on Netflix (I've just had a look-see, it says it's there for streaming) which means the only one you then need is Planet of the Dead.

I don't know why they took Planet of the Dead down for streaming, but you could always rent the disc from Netflix. My only other suggestion would be to pick up the DVD on Amazon. They have it for under $10, or if you're an Amazon Prime member you can stream it in HD for free. If you're not a Prime member, you can pay $3.00 and download it.

I'm no big fan of how Netflix has listed Doctor Who. The specials really ought to be included in the season list, they're too important to the on-going plot to be shunted away all over the place. They haven't even added the season 5 Christmas special yet (A Christmas Carol) so you'll have to hunt down another way to watch it, too.

For reference, here's the order to see 'em if you can:

Planet of the Dead
The Waters of Mars
The End of Time Part 1&2

If you can't get Planet of the Dead, you won't miss much. There's a plot hook at the end of the episode that sets up the next 3, but otherwise it's a filler.

FYI, "The Next Doctor" is not part of Season 4, it's the Christmas Special that follows it and is technically the first of the Specials.

Netflix used to reflect that, but they've started stuffing the Christmas Specials in with the seasons, so it appears to the casual viewer that The Next Doctor is the series 4 finale, and The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe is the series 6 finale.

Meanwhile, the rest of the David Tennant specials are scattered to the four winds, and Planet of the Dead hasn't even been available for streaming in almost a year.

You could try your local library. If they don't carry it they might be able to borrow it from another library system.

Just watched the End of Time special. I admit, I may have blubbered like a bitch. I then watched the first episode of the next season, and was astounded by the fact that I did not miss Tennant that much. Not knowing the name of the girl who plays Amy Pond off hand, I have still decided that heaven is me locked in a room with her and Christina Hendricks. Just Sayin'.

I had a similar reaction to yours, Rivers. I was really sad when David left, but actually, I was on board with Matt Smith almost immediately. He got me laughing right from his first scene at the end of David's final episode, and The Eleventh Hour is probably my favorite season premiere of the show.
