Okay, it wouldn't completely slay my enthusiasm, but still...I hate the idea. I think Ghostbusters should be fun as hell, and the thought of Peter being dead seems like it'd be a bit depressing, even if he did return as a ghost. Don't get me wrong, I'll still be there opening day.

If Zombieland can make the death of Bill Murray funny, I imagine Ghostbusters can too.

Jeansie, I actually thought the same thing, sort of: I already saw Bill Murray die once in a hilarious manner, and I think it'll be hard to do it again.

Incidentally, come to think of it, I don't think anyone died in the first two Ghostbusters films, or in The Video Game. Gozer, Zuul and Viggo are all supposed to be these bad-ass supernatural entities... and they don't manage to off a single red shirt, never mind one of the main cast.
It'd be a coup for the film's villain if they manage to off Pete Venkman in the first reel.

You are correct, sir. See, I get the idea that killing off a big name raises the stakes and keeps you on your toes. And that shit works for dramas, action movies, and shit like that. I don't think Ghostbusters needs that sense of peril; even though no one died in the first two, they still managed to be suspenseful when they had to be, so I dunno. I guess I need to see how this Ghost Peter thing will play out. I mean, if it's essential to the plot, I'll give it a go. If it just turns out that Peter is gonna be a ghost and hang out with the guys as usual, I don't see what the point would be.

Does anyone remember the scene where Jeffrey Combs dies in The Frighteners? He gets his head taken off, but his ghost head is still on his human shoulders, and he's wearing an expression of utter bemusement.
I think Venkman ought to go the same way. The moment his human body dies, his ghost ought to be there making some sort of wisecrack about it. In my mind's eye I can see Venkman getting hit by a bus mid-sentence -- with a low PG-13 level of gore, mind -- and as the bus passes off screen, Murray's ghost is still standing there and keeps right on talking. It could be pretty funny if it takes him a couple of lines of dialog to realize he's a ghost. That'd be treading into dark humor territory, but I'd be okay with a little bit of that as long as it doesn't saturate the film. Plus I think it'd be hilarious if we got a scene with Pete haunting Walter Peck.

I especially like the idea of him haunting Peck. That would be fun.

Yep, I'm done with this one. Murray's confirmation has officially killed any of my interest. I may or may not check it out when it comes to Netflix, depending on the reviews.

Would the dancing Patrick Swayze zombie have been more to your taste, Tally?
![]() If you threw something at the monitor during that scene, I imagine you would have flung your monitor out the window if they'd gone with their original runner-up choice: Sylvester Stallone. ![]() When I was discussing Zombieland with friends after seeing it, we agreed that the franchise ought to feature one Ghostbuster actor dying per film. Bill got killed in the first one, so Dan ought to die in the sequel.

And it ought to be Columbus who inadvertently kills all of them.

Jeans,
A.) That's pretty fucked up with Swayze. That sounds like shit MacFarlene would write. B.) It wasn't my computer. A pal of mine boots movies like a motherfucker... I'm talking putting S-10 AND Boo to shame. It was his monitor. C.) I'd have thrown a fucking secretary out the window. T.M., Esq.

The Patrick Swayze thing wasn't going to be mocking. He was going to be playing himself and everything, just like Murray did. Swayzedog was still among the living when Zombieland was filmed. I think it could have been the shit.

Yeah, they had to move on to another celebrity because of Swayze's health, they weren't taking the piss out of his passing.

Because of things that have happened to me, I don't really dig making fun of death. I mean, if it's a fictional character you don't know, that's one thing... but trying to be funny with the death of a real person you've actually heard of is just poor taste for my tastes. T.M., Esq.

So I'm firmly in the camp that believes Ray Parker Jr's version of Ghostbusters ought to be used in this film -- it was good enough for the original and for the game, I see no reason to Run DMC-it again -- but if they absolutely must use a new version performed by a band that's marketable now, my vote is for the Hoobastank version. These cats did their own recording for Halloween '09.
It feels somehow wrong -- the song lives in its 80s skin so well -- but it's amazingly faithful to the original, and could probably be marketed now.

Speaking of other comedians invading the franchise, am I the only one who thought it was a great shame that they never got Robin Williams involved in some capacity?
As much as I liked Peter MacNicol as Janosz, Robin Williams would have been awesome in that role. You think MacNicol was chewing the scenery? Williams would have devoured the sets whole!

In the conversation of Ghost Peter, or what I've come to know him as the "Venkman Spectre"... I would love to see him just going around and sliming his friends like Slimer did to him in the hotel hallway. I wouldn't mind seeing that.

Justyn, maybe if it was like something he couldn't really control and he was like "Oh, sorry" afterwards.

While I could see Peter being a ghost as something that has potential to be funny, I would not see the resulting comedy because it would mean Peter is dead. That would just depress me too much to find the movie funny or even enjoyable. The movie could be the greatest comedy of all time, but I wouldn't enjoy it because one of them is dead. Even if he's still hanging around and goes to "heaven" at the end it would just completely ruin the movie for me. And it's not just Peter, if they killed off Ray, Egon or Winston I'd feel the same way. I want to see all 4 GBs fight evil one last time in corporal form and then ride off into the sunset.
I would rather Peter not be in the movie at all than have him killed off.
