One of my absolute favorite niches of the genre.
SOV had a surprisingly huge reception when it was a new idea, or at least when Blood Cult came out and basically proved that you can sell ANYTHING so long as the cover was nice and shiny.
The mainstream viewers usually write these off as being automatic shitbombs simply because they aren't shot on film, or that they're lesser movies because of it, which I really don't agree with at all - sitcoms and soap operas have been shot on video for decades - you dont see people bitching about that, do you? Movies are no different, aside from the running time.
EIther way, the niche started off big and kind of waned at the end of the 80's, and when the video stores were mainly bought out by studios, pretty much lead a troubled life from there on.... but, there are some really good ones out there. SOme of my favorites -
Screaming For Sanity: Truth or Dare 3
Video Violence 1 and 2
The Burning Moon
Violent Shit 1 and 2
Splatter: Architects of Fear
Death Metal Zombies
Zombie Bloodbath 1-3
Savage Vengeance (I Spit On Your Grave 2)
Nikos the Impaler
Cannibal Hookers (terrible, but I love it)
Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman
Tales From The Quadead Zone (again, fucking horrible, but I love it)
There's more of course. A lot of the newer ones haven't been too good, mainly because there's pretty much no way for a movie NOT to be distributed in some fashion, and lesser filmmakers have been hawking their crap through bargain basement DVD sets... (Just watch something like Dead 7 or I Hate You) Still, I have much love and respect for these movies and find them massively entertaining, and well made for the conditions the filmmakers are usually under.
