Thread: Shot On Video Horror

  1. #1

    Default Shot On Video Horror

One of my absolute favorite niches of the genre.

SOV had a surprisingly huge reception when it was a new idea, or at least when Blood Cult came out and basically proved that you can sell ANYTHING so long as the cover was nice and shiny.

The mainstream viewers usually write these off as being automatic shitbombs simply because they aren't shot on film, or that they're lesser movies because of it, which I really don't agree with at all - sitcoms and soap operas have been shot on video for decades - you dont see people bitching about that, do you? Movies are no different, aside from the running time.

EIther way, the niche started off big and kind of waned at the end of the 80's, and when the video stores were mainly bought out by studios, pretty much lead a troubled life from there on.... but, there are some really good ones out there. SOme of my favorites -

    Wicked Games
Screaming For Sanity: Truth or Dare 3
    Creep
    Twisted Illusions
    Video Violence 1 and 2
    Blood Cult
    The Ripper
    Sledgehammer
    Houseboat Horror
    The Burning Moon
    Violent Shit 1 and 2
    Zombie 90
    Redneck Zombies
    Splatter: Architects of Fear
    Death Metal Zombies
    Evil Night
    Zombie Bloodbath 1-3
    Nightmare Asylum
    Dominion
Savage Vengeance (I Spit On Your Grave 2)
    Night Thirst
    Cannibal Campout
    Woodchipper Massacre
    Nikos the Impaler
Cannibal Hookers (terrible, but I love it)
    Jackhammer Massacre
    Mr. Jingles
    Carver
    Black Past
Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman
Tales From The Quadead Zone (again, fucking horrible, but I love it)
    Goblin
    Zombie Rampage
    Dweller
    Blood Lake

There's more of course. A lot of the newer ones haven't been too good, mainly because there's pretty much no way for a movie NOT to be distributed in some fashion, and lesser filmmakers have been hawking their crap through bargain basement DVD sets... (Just watch something like Dead 7 or I Hate You) Still, I have much love and respect for these movies and find them massively entertaining, and well made for the conditions the filmmakers are usually under.

    Don't forget Boarding House.

And was 555 SOV or just really low budget?

    555 was SOV.

Also, Las Vegas Bloodbath. It's not a good movie, but I'll be damned if it doesn't have one of the most outrageous kill sequences I've ever seen. Ever.

Not shot on video, but you can't tell me the VHS cover of BLOOD SPLASH wasn't shot in some dude's garage...

Weren't Brenna and Blake involved in a couple of these movies?

They were in Zombie Bloodbath 3. Blake recently apologized to me on Twitter for its existence.

Yeah, they were, and.... kinda miffed to hear that, DM.

Todd's movies are wonderfully entertaining, and he's a really nice guy.

Yeah, 555 is SOV, got the DVD shipping to me (hope it hurries the hell up)

Las Vegas Bloodbath is pretty fucking bad. It's a ripoff of Truth or Dare? A Critical madness and not a very good one either, the ONLY saving grace is the gore, but that takes a while to kick in.... I don't know what the FUCK compelled them to shoot all that footage of girls just sitting around running their mouths. (And I'll let it be known, that The Cinema Snob was not my introduction to this movie)

But here's something you guys DIDN'T know - the assistant/co director and FX man (who also played the Jehovah's Witness), David Dalton, is a convicted pedophile who is in prison.

Aside from that, he's a fucking loony, he apparently wrote some book detaling about how he thought he was the incarnation of Jesus and the Antichrist in one... and he thinks Christians are out on the loose trying to killh im... my buddy TOny (who did a review for the movie for his short lived B Movie Dumpster video show) interviewed him, and that interview... wow. I'd link it but the site's gone.

That's what absolutely killed it for me. Terrible. But it did make me crave pizza.

Actually, I do know - David Schwartz was pimping his oil wrestling act... this movie was basically a commercial for it.

Now, David Dalton says he was an incompetent bullshitter but... uh.... yeah. No idea who to believe.

Went to Massacre Video's website and noticed that all their company logo t-shirts they sell all say "Hail Satan" with upside down crucifixes on them. Makes me feel a bit uncomfortable about supporting them, so I'll probably pass on that one. Always wanted to check it out, though.

Can't really blame them. Even for me, the ZB trilogy is kinda rough.

My favorite to this day is still Video Violence. I just love the premise. And despite the fact the gore is ultra cheesy looking, it had some great scenes. And I still crack up everytime I see the scene with the sheriff tryiing to close to top to the top loader VCR, hahaha!!!

I didn't care much for Blood Cult but in a weird way, I really enjoyed The Ripper. Granted, it's awful, but a remarkably watchable kind of awful.

Another one for the list is Dreamaniac.

The cover for Dreamaniac is great. Hell, all of Wizard's covers are fantastic.

My mistake. Not sure where I got that it was SOV. I've never seen it. Been meaning to for years.

Randomly and unfortunately for Doom Asylum, it was edited on video and thus it looks as it does, although it's technically shot on film.

What the fuck kind of morons managed that, I will never know.

Well there's a lot of film shot movies edited on video that look fine, Slaughterhouse, for instance.

Never seen that, but if I DID see the box in a video store, I'd almost certainly assume it WAS shot on video, from the box..... then have my mind blown when I found out it was film shot.

Course, same could be said for FleshEater's original VHS (Return of the Living Zombies).

Just got my 555 disc in the mail today. Awesome.
