Default F13 Horror Movie Challenge Discussion Thread - Part III

    Previous Thread

Only a few weeks away. I've been really itching to watch a lot of horror movies lately. Anybody know what the all-time record is (I'm asking because I don't know... it's not a trivia question)?

    ADDED:
    So, here are the numbers:

    1st Annual (2007): Not Available
    2nd Annual (2008): Cody- 335*
    3rd Annual (2009): Cody- 377
    4th Annual (2010): Cody- 321
    5th Annual (2011): Cody- 265
    6th Annual (2012): MysterioMan007- 240
    7th Annual (2013): Cody- 223
    8th Annual (2014): MysterioMan007- 254

*The Tall Man claims 352 movies in the 2nd annual challenge, he did not actively participate in the challenge. He did not post his numbers until the challenge was already over (11/01/2008 around 2 a.m.).

    Champions:
    Cody- 5 times
    MysterioMan007- 2 times

    All-Time Record: 377 (Cody)

That's a little over a dozen movies (12.1), per day.

If anybody can find the numbers for the first challenge, please post a link.

I think we must have lost the first challenge in the forum pruning. I am pretty confident that Cody's 2009 total is the highest ever, though. I don't think anyone went insane that first year, when all we had were the 13 and 31 marks. I feel like we specifically added more insane challenges starting in '09 or so.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to this again this year and will post the official thread in a couple of weeks. Say the first day of fall (the 23rd)? Until then, USE THIS SPACE TO GET HYPED.

I'm hyped. I'm so hyped. I look forward to this thing every year. It's rough, though, because I'm trying not to watch a single horror flick in the month of September so I can go all out, but I'm already getting my decorations and everything...
If Atkins was here... he'd have two chicks in one hand and a beer in the other, and I know exactly what he'd tell you. He'd say "shut the fuck up, Spanky, I'm trying to score." And it would be true. Because Atkins has faith in two things: his mustache and his cock (yet to be disproven as two separate things) and if we all live with even a quarter of that Atkinness, then we have succeeded in life...

Doing this properly this year, stacking movies ready to go.

And like you Natman, I'm already getting decorations sorted!

Sheeeeit, I've been buying decorations for like 3 weeks. I think we're gonna put some stuff up on the inside this weekend, even, and then do all the exterior shit the next. Used to wait until the first weekend in October, but where's the fun in that?

About two weeks out from the challenge. I've rated the challenges and placed them in order of difficulty (easy to hard) below. Some members may find watching 31 movies a breeze, some will find it impossible. This is just how the challenges relate to each other. I'll keep posting stats until we start, as we bide our time and build our lists.

    The Horror Challenge (1/10)
    - Watch 13 horror movies, 2 must be new. If you put any kind of effort into it, you should be able to complete this challenge. If you have any kind of movie collection, streaming service (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus, etc.), or access to rentals (mostly grocery stores these days), this should be easy. By default, the easiest challenge of the lot. It doesn't always happen, though. People sometimes sign up and forget about the challenge completely.

    Oh, the Horror! Challenge
    (4/10)
    - Watch at least 13 movies featured at Oh, the Horror!, and one of these movies must include ONE that is featured during an October update. Similar to the one above, however, movie selection is restricted. The October update can be the real challenge depending on what kind of resources you have at your disposal. Not too tough if you put a little effort in. The site lists approximately 1500 movies, so you still have plenty of variety to choose from.

    The Ultimate Splatter Challenge (5/10)
    - Watch 31 horror/scary/Halloween-themed movies. This is where the challenge really begins. You have to average one movie a day. If you have a fairly busy life (job, spouse, kids, etc.), this can be difficult. If you slack off for a few days, it's time to play catch up... complete a mini-marathon. You need a decent sized collection and/or access to streaming/renting and a love for horror movies to pull this one off. It takes some dedication.

    The Alphabet Challenge
    (6/10)
    - Watch a movie for each letter of the alphabet. This one takes planning and creativity, but is (IMO) the most fun of all the challenges. Everybody has their own way of tracking, coloring or adding letters as they go. Once you pull this off, you might have completed all the challenges listed above. The letter X is a bitch, though. I've seen Xtro way more times than I care to.

    The Insomniac Challenge (7/10)
    - Watch 13 movies in a 24-hour period/1 day. You'll need to dedicate an entire day to this. Get up early in the morning and watch straight on through to midnight. If two of these movies are new, you've basically completed the month's regular challenge in a single day. This one takes some serious dedication and love for the genre... it may also lead to burnout. If you have any obligations, this can damn near be impossible.

100 Movie Challenge (10/10) - Watch 100 scary/horror/Halloween-themed movies in the month. Not for the faint at heart, this one is a real bitch. I once made it to 99 movies with 2 days left, but was so burned out on horror I couldn't find the strength to pull it off. Do you have any kind of social life? Do you have a job? If the answer is yes to either of these questions, you may find this one impossible. You must average over 3 horror movies a day... and then some. It's basically taking 6 days out of your life to do nothing but watch horror movies. The other challenges are nothing compared to this one. Not very many members have pulled this off.

I'd like to try for a personal best, although I've racked up numbers in the past that I highly doubt I'll be beating.

But with some members having disappeared, I may try for the gold. You never know.

    Good job Monkey!

One slight correction, I can't claim to have been in every challenge because I wasn't around for the original 2007 one. But every one apart from that, and I'll be aiming to beat my previous totals again this year.

As someone who actually does go back and look over these lists from time to time, I'm impressed, Monkey. This had to have been a hell of an undertaking but it's really cool to see it all laid out like that.

I guess you, me, and Natman are in the same club. Thanks for the honesty.

Are you going to go for 100 this year? I'm glad to see you back for another challenge.

I definitely would like to complete all 6 challenges this year and top my personal best of 101. Past that, I'm not sure how much I can sustain watching horror movies for the month. There are a lot of other things I want to spend my free time doing. Maybe 102... maybe 125? I get burnt out fairly quickly.

I enjoyed putting together the information. Now anybody can access their stats quickly without having to do the research. If I've made any errors please point them out so I can make corrections.

Thanks. 100, not sure yet... I'll continue trying to beat my total from the previous year and see how it goes from there, so at least 81. I'll be watching a diverse mix of stuff as usual - some perennial classic favourites, a lot of recent releases that I've been saving especially for October, a few I've seen before but not for quite some time and some from the "Why have I still not seen this after all these years" category! Looking forward to it.

In all seriousness, as far as the challenge goes, I'm okay with doing a RETCON and saying the '08 one was the first one. The '07 version was like an informal, baby steps version, if I recall. I know we had participants, but it was really nothing like it is now. It was definitely the first that was OTH sanctioned, which means it can main event anywhere in the world, brother.

Man, I've been dying to watch some Christopher Lee Dracula movies & 28 Days Later for the past month or so. Forbidden fruit and all that. Sleepy Hollow is looking really good right now (tomorrow night!). It's like an appetizer. 12 more days....

Will be binge watching WD season 5 next week to tide me over.
