View Full Version : Has anyone else noticed this? Katy Perry's latest video...

Is it just me, or Katy Perry's latest video, "Wide Awake," really uses visuals and imagery from NOES 3? Is this a homage? Rip-off?

I'm gonna say homage, because the final shot obviously gives away the Freddy reference - so its not like they are trying to hide it.

MTV's "in-depth" review (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1687787/katy-perry-wide-awake-scenes.jhtml) of the video makes no reference whatsoever to "A Nightmare on Elm Street." Shouldn't they know their pop culture?

This is MTV... The same station that brought you Teen Mom and Jersey Shore. No, they don't know their pop culture. They shove theirs down your throat. It also leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
I kinda have respect for her for doing this. It's kinda cool. Now I gotta check out the song/video.

it's been known she's a big Freddy fan.
her song "i kissed a girl" was also inspired by Freddy molesting little girls.

"It's kind of like the labyrinth of my life in the last two years," Perry said of the song and music video, which references fairy tales like Snow White and Alice in Wonderland, as well as Nightmare on Elm Street.

Yeah, Katy Perry is fun, and I even like a couple of her songs.
But my goal was not to create a Katy Perry thread; instead, it was to create a thread in which we could reflect about and discuss the fantastic visuals and imagery observed in the NOES movies.
Two things have motivated me to create this thread: (1) To share my impression that Katy Perry's video really mimics a lot of scenes from NOES 3 (see photo on the top of the post), (2) If Bay's remake had had a sequel, it is possible that his sequel could have included scenes similar to those seen in Perry's video (e.g. the scene in which Nancy and the surviving Dream Warriors enter a room full of mirrors, and are grabbed and pulled through the walls by Freddy).
Looking at Katy Perry's video, I feel that filmmakers from the 80's (particularly those who have worked in the NOES movies) were extremely creative and talented. I wish contemporary filmmakers would be as creative as filmmakers from the 80's. I feel that contemporary filmmakers not only imitate their colleagues from the 80's, but they fail at doing it. I feel that the CG effects seen in both the 2010 remake and in Perry's video are inferior to the original material produced in the 80's.
I am also interested to know if the general audience will recognize how NOES 3 has influenced this video, and by that I mean if people in general will make the connection between this video and NOES 3.

Ditto on both counts. MTV has been poorly scripted amateur-acted tv shows for as long as I can remember. They stopped being pop culture about 20 years ago.
And yes, now I have to check this out.
Perry > Dokken. Most 80s stars are dead or morbidly obese now. But if you're comparing them in their prime.... Perry > Dokken. I would lick every square inch of Katy Perry's body. This Dokken fellow? No. More entertaining and better singer, too.
Good catch, Westin.

It's really common for people to lose their voices as they get older. It seems to especially be the case with men moreso than women. And yes, drugs (besides the health issues) can have a strain on a singers voice.

We should get back to topic, and in my opinion, it's obvious that its a homage. Hence whey they even have a Freddy impersonater in the video.

Not so. Realistically, Englund is no longer Freddy in the movies, and for the last so many years he's been in Tobe Hooper and DTV hell. So my expectations for where he shows up are already super low. (I actually got excited recently when I learned he'd be on an episode of Criminal Minds... a show I never watch). It would make me happy if Katy had deemed Englund worthy of a cameo for a video.
As for Englund/Freddy selling out... Pfffffft. They made Freddy bubble gum cards for Pete sake. Freddy had his own branded candy, toys, stickers, buttons, video games, a TV show, music videos, board games, pillow cases, model kits, squirt toys, etc. Freddy had everything you can think of except his own Saturday morning cartoon. If Englund/Freddy ever "sold out", it was a long, long time before now.
Pretty sure Freddy was on MTV with pop artists before Katy Perry was even born.

If Englund had made a cameo, I would actually have a lot of respect for the director of the video.
Personally, I do not like this video. I feel like they have genuinely re-created scenes from NOES 3 with bad CGI and without referencing NOES 3.
From my observations, Perry hasn't spoken anything about the influence of ANOES over this video, nor has most of the video reviewers (I have only read two reviews associating the video with ANOES). When MTV was created in the 80's, Freddy was a MTV icon. So I feel that MTV has lost the opportunity of looking at its own history.
Now, if Englund had made a cameo, I would totally embrace the video as the homage that it is -- or should have been.
I like some of Katy Perry's songs ("Teenage Dream," "Last Friday Night," "Firework"), but I think her role in the video is that of a performer. I like her and everything, but I don't think she is the type of artist who would have the same amount of control over a music video as the director.

I personally feel it needs to be said.
The message I get from MTV -- and most reviewers -- is that this video is simply a re-enactment of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland." But it is so much more than that.
If they can reference "Alice in Wonderland," why can't they reference "NOES"?
Another reason I feel it needs to be said is that I feel Katy Perry's fanbase will obviously get the Lewis Carroll reference, since "Alice in the Wonderland" is so trendy right now. But will they get the "ANOES" reference?
Of course, this is just my opinion.

anyone who vividly remembers the movie, then sees the video, yes they will.
otherwise, no they won't.
Personally, I do not like this video. I feel like they have genuinely re-created scenes from NOES 3 with bad CGI and without referencing NOES 3.
do you know how many music videos have "re-created" scenes from movies?
neither do i, but i do know it's ALOT.
i don't recall any of them having a P.S.A. at the end saying "in case you didn't know, we stole this idea from the movie "Whatever".
why would you expect this video to? because this one just happens to be a movie you like, i assume.
From my observations, Perry hasn't spoken anything about the influence of ANOES over this video
why would she? it's just a random old ass movie, it's not some precious historical national artifact.
When MTV was created in the 80's
When MTV was created in the 80's..... they used to be a "music television channel".
that's not what it is anymore.
Freddy was a MTV icon. So I feel that MTV has lost the opportunity of looking at its own history.
Metallica was an MTV icon too. do you expect them to suddenly start talking about Metallica's old music today?
the people who watch MTV now are watching it for what they play now, fake reality shows and shows about pregnant teenagers, and i think for a couple hours between 2-4 am they play current music videos.
most current viewers don't give a fuck about Metallica or OG Freddy, because they were before their time.
Now, if Englund had made a cameo, I would totally embrace the video as the homage that it is -- or should have been.
i don't understand this. whether you like the video or not, it's an homage. there's "a" Freddy Krueger character at the end. that's like saying the NOES remake isn't really a remake, but if Englund would have been in it, then it would have been a remake. well, no, it's a remake either way, regardless of who played Freddy.
If Englund had made a cameo, I would actually have a lot of respect for the director of the video.
this makes less sense to me than the previous comment.
that's like saying you'd have more respect for Mel Gibson if he actually got the real Jesus Christ to play the character of Jesus in The Passion Of The Christ.
