Michael Fleischer mentioned that the new cover art was made in direct attempt to appeal to the "Harry Potter" crowd. Opinions on that?

Yes, Wal Mart will carry Monster Squad on DVD. It is in the U.S flyer for next week, I don't know the price though. For those of us who live in Canada, Best Buy is selling it for $12.99 on Tuesday. It might be worth mentioning some Best Buy stores have already put the disc on the shelf, don't bother trying to buy it as the system flags titles that are not supposed to be released yet and the won't bypass it. Best Buy (at least in Canada) seems to be getting really sloppy with release dates as of late, especially for T.V shows on DVD. Sadly, like I said their system flags them at checkout.

I bet every studio who in the past 10 years let this slip through their hands is kicking themselves. Here are the current sales rankings for major online retailers:

DVD Empire.com :12
Amazon.com: 11
Amazon.ca: 6
DVD Planet: 7
Deep Discount DVD: 7

Note: On Amazon.com and .ca these are overall sales and not just pre-order sales.

I apologize for the size of the images, the board wouldn't let the thumbnails show up for some reason. Anyway, the transfer is excellent and looks much better then the low-res images can show. Audio sounds great but to be honest I ended up watching the film with the cast commentary which is one of the more entertaining commentaries I've heard. Sadly, the Canadian version distributed by Maple doesn't have the poster insert that the U.S version has. Not a big deal but I find it a little odd it wasn't included, I'm happy they didn't slap french on the cover though! Anyway, below are screen caps, cover scans and disc scans. PLEASE don't hot link my pictures and if for some reason you want to use them please give me credit. On the other board I had problems in the past with people hot linking my pictures (mostly my Sideshow stuff) and I've had to take them down. I understand my pictures aren't exclusive but I do pay for my Flickr acount!

Just thought I would add the documentary on the DVD is 1hr 27mins! Very detailed and loaded with info.

Oh now that looks just fuckin' awesome. My local Blockbuster still carries a worn out copy of the original VHS. I've considered renting it time and time again, but I figured that I would just bite the bullet and wait until the DVD's release date, then just buy it and own it in all of it's restored Special Edition glory. Those covers look pretty schweet to me. I'm mostly an original poster art kind of guy, but the re-designed covers do it proud. "The end of the world starts at midnight." It seems so epic. I know where my next 20 bucks will be going come Tuesday.

It's a lot of fun. You can tell they have nothing but fond memories of making the film. They also do some good natured ribbing and make fun of some plot points. For instance, they point out the fact that Rudy is able to take out 2 vampires, and yet an entire police force is powerless.

But hey, it is Rudy after all. And he is in the goddamned club, isn't he?

Did anybody notice the music cues from Fright Night in the TV spot and the trailer and the cues from The Omen in the trailer? I found that interesting. I can't even believe that Brent Chalem (Horace) died in 1997. I also thought that it was interesting that Uncle Rico was the Wolfman in human form, Liam Neeson auditioned for Dracula, and that Frankenstein's co-designer Tom Woodruff, Jr. played the Gill Man. According to Wikipedia, he went on to play one of the Xenomorphs in Alien vs. Predator.

Lance Lives

I pretty sure he was an alien in Alien: Ressurection as well.

I just got done watching this. Picked it up at Wal-mart for 15 like somebody else mentioned. I'd never seen this and the suspense was killing me. I don't guess I can look at it with the nostalgic foggers on like some people since I've never seen it, but I thought it was all around a pretty fun flick. Loved the original Frankenstein nod with the little girl by the water.

The only thing I am upset about (save for the DVD artwork, but I'm learning to live with it) is that the M-M-Mmmm Monster Squad cue is missing right before the Monster Squad rap. Other than that, this is the DVD I have been waiting my whole life for. Let me meet Lance, and I can die happy.

I got this for my birthday yesterday. I had to restrain myself from buying it as soon as it came out because I knew my sister wanted to buy it for me. Last Christmas, she tried finding a copy online to buy for me, but all she could find were bootlegs. So, as soon as I realized there was a DVD on the way, I started dropping hints (well, anvils) that that's what I wanted from her for my birthday.

I've already watched the movie twice... once as is, and once with the cast commentary. I love the commentary. It started a little slow, but then I realized that's probably because none of the actors doing commentary were in the opening scene.

I worked my way through the special features fairly quick. I'm incredibly happy with the DVD, but the special features save for the "Monster Squad Forever" documentary are pretty weak. The deleted scenes... well, let's just say that there are much better extended for television "Monster Squad" clips on YouTube.

I love "Monster Squad Forever," though. It, the actual movie, and the cast commentary are worth buying the DVD for.

Tom Noonan (Frankenstein's monster) seems like a real dick, though. I can understand method acting... that's not the problem. He's just seems really dick-ish in his interview on MSF, and the part that cinched it was when he said he tried to screw up Phoebe's scenes because she screwed him up "by putting things between him and the camera." Who purposely tries to screw up a five-year-old actress?

The Fat Kid part of MSF made me cry. Glad they said something, but they could have used a better picture for the "Brent Chalem 1975-1997" part. Small nitpick there, though.

Very happy with the movie overall, though. I didn't realize it was only really an hour and 15 minutes long, though. I think I could watch it over and over without getting bored.

Skott

A bit of garage cleaning here at Camp Shock yielded a folder of various press clippings I've been holding on to for one reason or another. Sifting through the stack, I found this: A People magazine photo of Michael Douglas surrounded by Frankenstein's Monster, Dracula, the Wolf Man, the Mummy and the Gill Man at the 1987 premiere part for The Monster Squad.

The bash was thrown at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City. Douglas was hitting it big that year, having starred in Wall Street and Fatal Attraction. What I think is especially cool is that that party actually feature performers in full make-up!
