Usually, most people( including me) like the first film in a series/franchise the best. But there are some movies where I prefer the sequel/sequels.
Some of mine:
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Sleepaway Camp 2 & 3
Sorority House Massacre 2
The Legend of Drunken Master
Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Day of the Dead
Bloody Murder 2
Just to name a few
Terminator 2
Child's Play 2

Dawn of the Dead over Night of the Living Dead.
Aliens over Alien.
Phantasm II over Phantasm.
Friday The 13th Part 2, TFC, and TNB over the original Friday The 13th.
The Devil's Rejects over House of 1,000 Corpses.
Dream Warriors comes ever so close, but still not quite there... yet.

Battle Royale. If the first movie was more like the novel, it'd win, but Requiem is better than the original, think.

Does Return of the living dead count? Its technically a sequal...

That would be me. I find it more entertaining and easy to get into than the original, but they're both awesome movies and some of my favorite ever.

I prefer the original (tough to top its first act) but I do enjoy Part 2. The actors seem to be having a lot of fun, like old friends getting back together.

Thats cool.
I love them both but 1 is just light years ahead of 2 in my opinion. Its also way more quotable :p
The closest film that I can think of is Phantasm II as I just generally am more entertained by it in comparison with Phantasm I.

I do, I do. It's got a great Gothic atmosphere when it succeeds (even if it fails in many ways). The original's a bonafide classic but it just bores me to tears nowadays.

I can definitely see how some people can't watch the original Halloween. But I can still actually watch it, and not get bored. Although H1 is my all-time favorite, i'd actually say H2 probably has the best re-watch value IMO.

A few more that I forgot to add:
Die Hard 2
This one is crazy to me. Of course, not only do I think its vertable action movie blasphemy to like ANY Die Hard sequel more than the original (Even if it wasn't really well written, original, and suspenseful, Hans Gruber is enough to make it kick some serious ass) but the sequel you prefer is the one I think is easily the worst in the series.
but if this thread proves anything, it's "to each his own", I suppose

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
As much as I enjoy Raiders of the Lost Ark, it's my least favorite (and least watched) film in the series. Temple of Doom is just so much better: better action, better effects, better music... it's just plain better.
Halloween III: Season of the Witch.
Don't get me wrong, I adore Halloween. But Halloween III has got Tom Atkins, folks. 'Nuff said.
That would be me. I find it more entertaining and easy to get into than the original, but they're both awesome movies and some of my favorite ever.
I go back and forth on the Ghostbusters films. There are moments in the second film -- the courtroom scene, just about every scene involving Janosz Poha -- that propel that film heads and shoulders above the first, but the first film is so special to me that I just can't pick which one I like better.
I also really like the score in the second film. I wish they'd release it on CD.

I agree on Temple Of Doom. Very underrated movie and one I can watch over and over. It's always been my favorite Indiana Jones film, and I never understood the hatred against it.
Ghostbusters II is another underrated sequel. Both movies play off of each other so well and are just classic. I too wish the original score would get a release.

If considered a sequel to Manhunter, Silence of the Lambs
Critters 2: The Main Course
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Bride of Frankenstein is my favorite sequel, and I definitely prefer it over the original.
I must be the only son of a bitch alive who prefers Son of Frankenstein over the other two Karloff Frankenstein features. It's probably got more to do with nostalgia than anything, but I'll be damned if I don't love that flick.
Natman
02-19-2008, 03:28 AM
I don't know how much my adoration of BoF had to do with Karloff, it was mostly James whale's directing style. I just think that is one of the most beautiful things ever filmed, including acting and score. It had everything going for it. I don't think Son of Frankenstein was bad at all, but I do like the first two more.
The Dream Master
02-19-2008, 03:29 AM
Yeah, I don't think there's any doubt that Whale's films are technically superior to Son of Frankenstein. I just prefer the latter for whatever reason.
I am shocked that anyone could say that any Godzilla sequel is better then the original. The same goes for Die Hard 2.
As far as Godzilla is concerned, I think the original is the only truely good film out of the 30(?) they made. The sequels are monster smashing fun, but are in no way shape or form in the league with the original anti-nuclear war alagory which portrayed Godzilla as a true monster that men created himself and now fears rather then Earth's defender against space aliens and other post nuclear war monsters. The original Godzilla represented true concequence for our actions (which like the Frankenstein story begs the question of who is the real monster: The creature or the people who made it?) and it is actually a pretty scary movie and is very suspensful as you wait to finally see the creature.
