'Battleship' may have a captain (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i9ffdbbfa915bd89cb7bdd4456d1e44c7)
Peter Berg may be crying out "You sank my battleship!"
The filmmaker is in talks to direct a big-screen version of the Hasbro board game for Universal. Brothers Jon and Erich Hoeber have signed on to write the script.
The game, which began in pencil and paper form in the early 20th century and is now available on platforms from cell phones to computers, consists of two players arranging a variety of ships on a grid. The game proceeds in alternating salvos as players try to "sink" the opposition's ships by guessing where they sit on the grid.
While plot details are being kept below deck, the studio is looking to make an epic naval action adventure.
Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir are producing for Hasbro. Dylan Clark and Anikah McLaren are overseeing for the studio.
Endeavor-repped Berg, who most recently directed "Hancock," has made several movies for Universal, including "The Kingdom," "Friday Night Lights" and "The Rundown."
The brothers Hoeber wrote "Whiteout," the upcoming Kate Beckinsale thriller based on the comic book, and penned Summit's comic-book adaptation "Red," which has Bruce Willis is in talks to star. The duo are repped by Endeavor and the Cheng Caplan Co.

"captain, someone is shooting at us, do you want us to return fire?"
"Yes, but where are they?"
"I'm not sure captain, but I have a grid of the ocean, separated by letters and numbers."
"Okay, then, fire into B1."
"Captain, we have a hit."
(later on)
"Captain, incoming messege from the enemy."
"OOhhhhh, you sunk my battleship!!"

Universal Sets Battleship for July 1, 2011
Universal Pictures has set a July 1, 2011 for the Peter Berg-directed Battleship, a live-action adaptation of Hasbro's board game.
Variety says the deal is part of a two-picture pact Berg has made with the studio, where he'll follow Battleship with the Afghan war drama Lone Survivor.
The Battleship script was written by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber. Production is scheduled to begin next spring.
Berg called the film "a contemporary story of an international five-ship fleet engaged in a very dynamic, violent and intense battle."
Other projects in development for Berg, including Dune and Hancock 2, will come later.
Other Hasbro adaptations in the works at Universal include Stretch Armstrong (April 11, 2011) with Steve Oedekerk, Clue with Gore Verbinski, Monopoly with Ridley Scott, Candy Land with Kevin Lima and Ouija with Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes.

Battleship Movie ‘Degrades Cinema,’ James Cameron Says
Avatar director James Cameron is not a man who is known for his subtlety. Look no further than his work in film for proof. As the guy behind the two top-selling releases of all time — Avatar and Titanic — thinking big and making a splash wherever possible is simply how he rolls. So when he castigated the concept of a movie adapted from the boardgame Battleship in a recent interview, it was really no surprise when the eyebrow-raising comments started to fly.
It should be noted from the outset — the following quote is translated from a German source, so some of the wording might not be exact. What is clear is the point Cameron was making:
“Everyone in Hollywood knows how important it is that a film is a brand before it hits theaters. If a brand has been around, Harry Potter for example, or Spider-Man, you are light years ahead. And there lies the problem. Because unfortunately these franchises are becoming more ridiculous. Battleship. This degrades the cinema.”
Ouch. Not that he doesn’t have a point. Personally, I like to give every movie the benefit of the doubt. As a fan of ridiculous plots and good-bad film, I think there’s plenty of room for the outlandish alongside Serious Cinema. But from what we know so far, Battleship is a Peter Berg-directed action adventure about global naval forces taking on space aliens — exactly how does that have anything to do with the board game? I’m still curious to see where Berg takes his creation, but I can’t disagree with Cameron’s statement. A good movie doesn’t need to have a brand slapped on it to succeed. It’s good or it isn’t. Maybe people don’t discover that until after a home video release is available — and hell, maybe it goes bust… filmmaking is always a risk after all — but I think tacking on a brand to a story that it simply doesn’t fit with is only going to hurt public perception of the property as a whole.

I think it's admirable than Cameron actually told it like it is, rather than tiptoeing around what he really thinks for the cameras.

Kind of shitty of Cameron to diss sequels and unoriginal projects while he himself is working on Avatar 2 and 3 currently. Pot. Kettle. Black.

Didn't he also direct the sequels to ALIEN and THE TERMINATOR as well ? Not to mention PIRANHA II:THE SPAWNING. He's been setting off the smug alarms quite a bit this last year with ripping on super-hero/comic flicks, and the "misuse" of 3D with the PIRANHA remake. While I do think the bloke is entitled to a bit of gloating, with making the two highest moneymaking flicks back to back. Especially on top of just about everyone waiting to see him fall flat on his face with both projects. Although I could see why maybe so many want to see him fail if the rumors how he treats those on the set of his films are true, and goes around blasting everyone else with this smuggery.
Although, with BATTLESHIP, the idea of Navy Vs. Aliens/Undersea Dwellers does tickle my fancy. I just whish it wasn't this summer, with so many flicks crowding the marketplace this year. I might have to wait for the DVD/Blu-Ray.

In his review for The Abyss (http://www.jonathanrosenbaum.com/?p=7532), Jonathan Rosenbaum argued that "one could call him [James Cameron] a professional recycler, and one of the most cunning in the business."

So... who does everyone think will get "the line"? We all know it'll be in the movie somewhere.
The obvious choice would be Neeson, and he's the one whom it would sound the least silly coming out of... however, I somehow don't think it will end up being him. Probably one of the younger cast members.
Or... perhaps the final line delivered by the alien leader in his original alien language, but showing at the bottom of the screen in subtitles, "You sank my battleship!" Yeah, that sounds dopey Hollywood enough to be how it really goes down. Think my money's on this.

The original game was based off the Pacific Theater of the Second World War. Which involved Allied Naval Forces fighting it out with the Japanese. I'm guessing with cultural sensitivity/political correctness being the rule in Hollywood. Along with the fact it might interfere with international earnings in making the Japanese the bad guys as they were during the war. Invaders from beyond the stars is the safest way to go.

^There were some complaints from various Asian American communities about the flick. Despite trying to be even handed in its portrayal of Japanese pilots, and crew in charge of organizing the attack. They complained that it would cause race based attacks on the Asian community after the flick came ot. But if your looking for a recent flick that actually give you an idea how viscious the Imperial Japanese could be. Check out The Great Raid, which detailed some of their treatment of American P.O.W.s in the course of the Second World War . A flick that came and went without much ado.

Director Peter Berg on why aliens were chosen for the film...
"So we're going to do Battleship, and we know that it has some very intense violence in it. With that said, I wanted to make a film that felt fun. I didn't want to make a movie for those of you who are familiar with your World War II history. So I started to think about who our enemy could be."
At the time, Berg had watched a Stephen Hawking documentary where he talked about Goldilocks planets (planets with climates that could possibly support life). Berg explained, "We are targeting these planets [we really do this] with high-frequency signals. The purpose of these signals is to basically say, 'Hey, we're here. We're Earth.'"
Berg continued, "I thought, wouldn't it be interesting if at the beginning of the movie we identify a planet that is a Goldilocks planet and we send a signal out? That's how Battleship opens."
For the film, Berg took familiar elements from the game and kicked them up a notch. "... as simple as it is with me calling out D1, you say miss. You say D5, I say miss. When I say hit, something kind of interesting happens. I try to kill you as brutally and quickly and mercilessly as possible. That's actually really good DNA for a movie."

I saw this the other night with some friends. I'm sad to say that "THE LINE" isn't said at any point, at least not how you'd expect.
There's just so much wrong with this film it's hard to know where to begin. It passed the point of just being awful into being so awful it was amazingly entertaining, even with a middle section that's just drawn out far to long for it's own good. Also, firing up a 70 year old Battleship that's been static for two decades and having it perform like modern destroyer; so much fail there but I'll be damned if it wasn't fun to watch. Go see this for the laughs, have a good time, then forget about it, assuming you won't by the time you step outside the theater.

I can't believe Universal sued The Asylum. What assholes. What The Asylum does is hilarious, blatant, and hurts absolutely no one. Not to mention, it's been done for decades.
Global Asylum Thanks Universal For ‘American Battleship’ Lawsuit (http://www.deadline.com/2012/04/global-asylum-thanks-universal-for-publicity-over-%E2%80%98american-battleship%E2%80%99-lawsuit/)
Universal Studios says Global Asylum stole their Battleship, but today the mockbuster producers claimed the studio’s copyright lawsuit over American Battleship is just a scapegoat smokescreen – but they “appreciate the publicity.”
“The Global Asylum has promoted the feature film American Battleship for nearly a year while Universal raised no concerns,” said Global Asylum today. “The timing of Universal’s recently filed lawsuit coincides with mixed reviews of its big-budget film, Battleship — the first movie based on a board game since Clue. Looking for a scapegoat, or more publicity, for its pending box-office disaster, the executives at Universal filed this lawsuit in fear of a repeat of the box office flop, John Carter of Mars. The Universal action is wholly without merit and we will vigorously defend their claims in Court. Nonetheless, we appreciate the publicity.”
Universal’s 54-page copyright infringement and false advertising suit (read it here) filed April 20 comes just weeks before the studio’s $100 million blockbuster Battleship hits North American theaters on May 18. The movie has already proved a big hit overseas since opening earlier this month. “This action,” the suit says, “arises out of Global Asylum’s knowing and willful violation of Universal’s rights with respect to Universal’s highly anticipated motion picture Battleship, and Global Asylum’s blatant infringement and unfair completion in advertising and promotion for sale, in the United states and in Europe, a straight-to-DVD knock-off that features substantially similar artwork, packaging, release dates, and film trailers as Universal’s motion picture.” According to Amazon and other online retailers, American Battleship is scheduled to be released May 22.
Universal wants the court to stop all stateside distribution of American Battleship with an injunction and all American Battleship DVDs, posters, trailers and everything else seemingly related to the movie destroyed. The studio also seeks compensatory damages that could range into the millions. The studio, which says it has spent over $30 million promoting Battleship, licenses Battleship from gamemaker Hasbro based on their “well-known naval combat board game of the same name.”
The suit, filed in U.S. District Court, follows on the heels of a UK court injunction that Universal successfully sough to halt Global Asylum’s American Battleship distributors on that side of the Atlantic. ”
American Battleship is nothing new for Global Asylum. For years the straight-to-DVD company has been the producers of such titles as Paranormal Entity, Titanic II, 2012: Ice Age and 2011’s Battle Of Los Angeles – which was not Columbia’s Battle: Los Angeles, though both did involve fighting off alien invasions. The mockbuster makers recently signed a one-year, 10-title first-look agreement with Staz/Anchor Bay Entertainment UK.
Universal had no comment on the lawsuit. The studio is represented by Andrew J. Thomas of downtown LA’s Jenner & Block LLP.
