I will try this here. How much is it for guitar strings for an acoustic? I've had one since I was 5, three strings snapped by the time I was 6 or 7. I recently figured it can't be that hard to play, so I want to fix it up.
Only problem... I know nothing about the strings or the brands or anything. I just know it's the three thinner strings that are gone. :(

It shouldn't set you back more than $10 for a basic set of guitar strings. You should go into your local guitar store and see what they recommend you buy.

Well I have been practicing for the last two hours. I have never played before and used a self-teaching book I got when I was a kid. I can't even make it sound nice when playing D,F,E on the fourth string. So... I guess I may have to quit before I start. No matter how hard I try, I can't make a smooth note when playing them at a half assed fast speed. I know it's only 2 hours, but it's also only D,E,D,E,F,E,F,E,D,E,F,E,D.
Fucked if I know.

well alot of the forum members know I played lead guitar in a (if I may say so) successful Ontario based live band for a bit over 20 years
my current guitar is a Peavey Predator EXP Plus, my first guitar was a Fender Stratocaster, and I mainly used Fender amps, but I recently, for home playing sake, play with a Line 6 amp which I do prefer quite a bit more

I used to play guitar in a punk band (garage band, doing Ramones and stuff like that, nothing fancy), but now I pull out the acoustic guitar around the firepit sometimes. I love Neil Young's songs so I play a bit of his stuff.

I don't play guitar as much anymore.
Back when I was playing alot, I was pretty good. If you know me, you know i'm really into 80's thrash and 80's-early 90's death metal. That's the style I was playing. I'd mainly learn and play along to other bands songs. I'd occasionally come up with my own material.
I have an Ibanez RG 7321.....which is a 7 string guitar. :) I like 7 strings because you can have the sound of a detuned guitar WITHOUT having to actually tune it down real low. :) I normally play in standard: B,E,A,D,G,B,E. Occasionally I tuned down a whole step: A,D,G,C,F,A,D.

Acoustics are pretty sweet. Just go to a music shop and bring your guitar and they will string it for you. Standard tuning usually goes E A D B G E and if you learn to read tabs or watch a few videos on youtube, you should be good to go at least for the basics of it. I never took a lesson and can play decently, but if you want to learn theory, I suggest no matter what your age is, taking at least 1 or 2 lessons.

If you can read tabs, "Folsom Prison Blues" is a fairly easy song to play - even lead/solo.
I expect that you're interested in playing rhythm guitar, which is basically strumming chords, rather than playing a lot of intricate leads and solos. "Every rose..." shouldn't be that difficult to play rhythm to. I find it useful to Google "Song title tabs" or "Song title chords" depending on whether you want to play the lead parts or just strum along.
Playing an acoustic guitar is, to me at least, quite a bit more difficult than an electric, because you generally have to apply more force over a greater distance when fretting. The upshot is that, if you're good on acoustic, you're probably going to be pretty damn good on electric, too.
FWIW, I've had several years of guitar lessons, played and practiced for hours on end, and I still can't hit chord progressions very well. 1 out of 5 times, I'll hit a flat one. But that's alright, because it's still fun.

That's the first thing I noticed, for the love of God, I have to press my fingers so hard on my acoustic to get a decent note unless my fingers are pressed absolutely perfectly. I know guys like Slash are great guitar players, but I can't fathom them being able to hit all these notes perfectly at concerts night in and night. So, the electric guitar comment you said makes sense.
As far as tabs go, I don't know what they are, but know they can be found online and I figured somehow I'd figure them out. That's pretty much why I started. Even if I could half ass master 4 songs, it's worth it. But as of now I can only play three strings because there's only three on the guitar, so I haven't looked into it yet.

Tabs are music notations for people that can't read music.
Basically, they have a diagram of the guitar strings, kind of like this:

And then there will be numbers that tell you which fret to press for each note, so that:

means that you play the top (lowest sounding) string open, then the same string with the first fret fingered, then the second fret, then the third, then the fourth, then open again. The first fret is the one up toward the head of the guitar - the first one past the nut.
Read from left to right. A little more complicated would be:

Which should sound like the riff for Nirvana's "Come As You Are"

Yeah, you do have to fret the notes harder on an acoustic. That's why most people will tell you to start on an acoustic. It'll make playing an electric even easier.

The last line with the arrow represents the low E string (the thickest guitar string). Hence, the last one would be the high E string (the lightest).
A basic open E chord on a tab would look like this:

So you'd fret the numbered fret given. :) It's pretty simple. You'll get used to it really quick.
Poison's Every Rose Has It's Thorn is a pretty easy song. I don't think Patience is too difficult either.

Those are basically chords. You can look up guitar chord charts online (or get the poster) that diagrams how to do them. For example, the G would look like this in tab:

To accomplish it, your middle finger would be on the top string at the third fret, your pointer finger would be on the second-to-top string at the second fret, and your ring finger would be on the bottom string at the third fret. Strum all six strings and you're playing a G.
Some chords, like the ones in your GnR example, will require you to barre some strings. To barre, you use the first couple of fingers to hit different frets, then one finger (usually the ring or pinky) to hit several strings on the same fret. Google "barre chords" and they probably have pictures.
Also Google "power chord" because you can get a lot of use out of it. You can move the power chord all the way up and down the neck. It looks like this:

Look up the tabs for Nirvana's "In Bloom" and you'll see that its intro is just a power chord moved along the neck of the guitar.

I was asked the other day what guitar strings I prefer... and I said Ernie Ball. Back when I was playing more frequently in the early 90s I always used Ernie Ball strings.

I prefer Elixer lately, 20 buck strings but man are they worth it, since I bought this guitar in October, only 4 strings have broken
and it's funny you guys talking about tabs, some people know I was never ever able to read tabs, well I could understand them and all, just I never went by tabs or notes, I am completely incapable of it, I play completely by ear, I have always had the tallent to hear something and be able to play it, even when I was 3 years old on my dad's piano

I've been playing for almost 9 years now, I think. I'm not that great, but I guess I can hold my own. I have to read tabs, though--I don't have that natural talent.
Edit: Holy shit, I see that Blake used Come as You Are as an example. That was the first thing I learned how to play, along with Tonite, Tonite by the Smashing Pumpkins.

Shoey - I use Ernie Ball strings too. I have a 7 string.....I get the .10s-.56 gauge ones. :) I don't usually like to go above .10s - I'm not really fond of REALLY thick strings.
My brother once bought a set of those GHS Zakk Wylde strings. MAN, the low E string was a .70 :eek: It felt like a bass string, basically.

I play by ear AND read music. Although, I didn't learn how to read tab or sheet music until my 9th or 10th year of playing. (I've been playing for 20 years now.)

I've been picking up the bass more of late, one of the guys I work with is a pretty good guitar player and he just moved a few houses down the street from me. He's wanting to jam once he gets all of his gear moved in, so I know I need a lot of practice so I don't sound like complete crap when we're playing. I used to play every day, now I'm lucky if I pick it up once a week.
As for strings, I went to Fender stainless flatwounds (extra light gauge) a few years ago. I'll never go back to a roundwound string again, even if the flatwounds are expensive as hell.
I play a Squier P-Bass that I bought brand new back in 1999. I had a BC Rich Warlock for a while, but I didn't really care for it so I sold it. It sounded nice, but it was very poorly balanced and unweildy.
I'd like to get a Fender P-Bass, but a new guitar really isn't high on priorities so it'll be a while before I get it.
I have a very old Peavy Studio Pro 40 amp, I love the tone but it's not big enough to really play in a large room or outdoors. I know it's not a bass amp either, but personally I don't really like bass amps. I like kind of a high, flatter tone. That's why I like the really light strings and the guitar amps.
I rarely use any effects at all, but I do have a couple of pedals, a Boss DS-1 distortion, and a Boss EQ-7 equalizer. I had a flanger too, but it really wasn't the one I wanted so I sold it a long time ago.

Just picked up a new cabinet today, so now I have a 150w half stack. I got the amp about a week ago, but the cabinet was backordered, and I'm impatient so I went to guitar center and picked out a cabinet after playing through a few.
So now I have an Ibanez TBX150H amp with a B-52 400w 4X12 cabinet. I'm nearly spooging myself with this thing... it can literally shake my entire house.

After months and months of not playing any guitar, i've been playing a little bit the past week or so. I've actually been using my brother's Fender Strat...and I have it in standard tuning. Normally i'm tuned down at least a whole step. I've been in the mood for playing old school thrash riffs, so that's why I left it in E.
I have to re-develop my wrist, because I can't play as good as before. But I usually get back into my groove pretty quick. Before, i'd play every day for 3-4 hours.

The pricier Ibanez RG's and S series are worth the money IMO. I've played a bunch at Guitar Center, and they play fantastic. Ibanez has always been my favorite guitar company.
Have you seen those newer Ibanez Xiphos? They're pretty similiar to the Jackson Warrior. I'd like to get one of those.

I agree competely; I've often found many of the less expensive models to sound and balance better than thier more expensive counterparts. I'm a balance freak with my guitars though... if it doesn't balance right I can't stand to wear it.

I hate re-stringing my guitars too, but it's something you have to do. Plus, you have a Edge Pro II bridge, which is similiar to a Floyd Rose. I know those are a pain in the ass to re-string and tune at first. That's actually a big reason why I avoid guitars with Floyd Rose or similiar tremolos. I prefer fixed bridges.

That's awesome man, I just got the exact same guitar (Evo XM) about a month ago and I absolutely love it. Got it dirt cheap too... 60 bucks at Guitar Center because it was "broken." Only thing wrong was the ground wire had come loose... one little spot of solder and it was good as gold.
You're a lot better on it than me though :P I've been playing bass for 10 years now, but this is my first 6 string.

Anyone else write and play a totally different style of music than you enjoy listening to the most?
I love grunge, folk and alt rock. But all the stuff I write is usually bluesy, country, or in the style of classic rock. Just wondering if anyone else does this?

I don't think any two songs I've ever written sound the same, I've listened to many different types of music in my life and have taken all of it into my song writing, so to answer the main question, no, I write music to what I listen to

I can't "write" music, cause I have never been able to read music, and I lasted through a whole 22 year music career without reading music but writing songs, alot of people don't understand how I ever did it
I know and understand basic notation but nothing overly spectacular, mainly due to playing 6 other instruments other than guitar. For guitar I prefer tabs and chords over actual notation.

I just started playing this past March. I have a late 80's Fender Malibu acoustic and a brand new Fender strat. I think I have progressed a good bit considering i'm teaching myself. I can even play a few songs: Lynyrd Synyrds "all i can do is write about it," Bob Dylan's "knocking on Heaven's Door", Alabama's "Dixieland Delight" and "Every Rose has it's Thorn" by Poison.

I've been playing bass for almost 25 years and if I can, I'd like to pass along some things I've learned over the years.
Don't go crazy buying an expensive guitar or bass right off the bat. When your starting off, you wont really notice the difference between a great instrument and a cheap one. Sure it's great to buy an expensive instrument, but if you decide after awhile that your just not into it, you'll get raped if you decide to sell your guitar.
Start with the basics. If you want to play guitar, dont go and buy an expensive 7, 8, or 12 string guitar. Start with a decent 6 string. If you like playing, and your a decent player, then maybe move up to something a bit better.
Playing an expensive instrument wont make you a better player.
Learning chords sucks. To keep yourself interested, try and learn something that you really like. Get the tab for a song that you enjoy and learn that. But keep it simple. Dont shoot for things that might discourage you cause you just dont have the skills yet.
Alot of the time, things that sound easy, are hard to play. Dont think that just because you cant play a riff that sounds simple that you suck.
If possible, keep your guitar or bass at hand. Dont store it away. Leave it out, and if your sitting watching tv, or playing around on the net, pick it up and see what happens.
Dont be too hard on yourself and dont set your goals too high. Learn a bit at a time.

Few more tips. If your looking for a decent instrument, try pawn shops. I've seen some really nice instruments for fairly cheap money at these types of places. One thing though, just realize that someone, or more than one person, has owned the guitar or bass before you. Make sure you check out anything you buy. Some tell-tale signs that someones been messing around with a guitar are any piece of hardware that isn't original to that particular model. Check the back plates, if the screws show sign of wear, someone might have been messing around with the electronics or the trem setup. Take a look at the plate that holds the neck on, if the screws show wear, you might want to be careful, they could have replaced the neck, something that I feel is best left up to a luthier.
And no matter where you buy from, if they wont let you play it, walk away.

I have four guitars. A Fender Stratocaster(maple neck, cream body), A Jackson Dinky(maple neck, black body), a 410 Taylor, and a vintage 1975 release of a 1957 Gibson Flying V.
My Strat. is tuned down 1/2 step, Dinky tuned Drop D, the Taylor and my V are tuned to standard.
I only have a Line 6 Spider II 100 Watt Combo amp, but someday I'll get myself a nice Marshall Half Stack, I'm not too sure on the model just yet, but I'll look into it a bit more once I get some money in the bank.

I was just seaching through ebay for a hockey mask. When i saw that the guy who painted a jackson guitar and got all the jason actors to sign it from the box set extras dvd, has put it up for sale!!! it's $8,500 or best offer, man if i had the money it would so be mine! There only one day left.

BC Rich just released a Chuck Schuldiner Stealth Tribute guitar! I REALLY want to get it, but it costs between $899-999. But it'd be worth it. It's made with alder, and is a neck-thru. It only has a bridge pickup, just like Chuck used to have.

I don't do it at church (atleast not anymore), but I to play the music. I play a bunch of 80s and 90s music, some of today's current stuff. The Yamaha you have, I think it's called the Pacifica. It's a good model.

I still play Darrell Evans, Casting Crowns and Third Day stuff, but not at church. I also rarely play with a band anymore. I play some original stuff, I tend to suck at writing my own music for my lyrics, and lyrics for the music.

I can really jam out to blues. It is my favorite to play by far. Then Christian/90's music

Right here . Started at 13 , I'm 38 now. My band is on hiatus right now, ( saving to get shit out of hock), LAst time we played was 3 months ago in the studio.

Been playin for almost 13 years, dam where does the time go? Got 7 guitars including 2 acoustics and a bass. Wrote an "album" about 8 years ago and have written probably close to a hundred songs or pieces of songs that never got finished.
I don't play much anymore. It's no fun to play by yourself. Every now and then i meet up with friends and family to jam and write new stuff. Mainly rock, some hard,some metal, some borderline pop or country. It's all blues based stuff at it's core I guess. Some classic rock mixed with 90s/modern rock. I hate playing covers and usually never remember them even if I learn them.
I usually write riffs, but lately I've had to pick up some of the lead duties when jamming. I got a couple lead licks that I bastardize every which way but loose, to fake my way through what kinda resembles a solo lol. I'm a rythm player all the way. Im famous in my circle for using weird chords when writing stuff.
Never could organize a full band for long enough to play live much but at a party here or there. I still have fun even if no one else but friends and family ever hears my music anymore.

I've been playing bass guitar for 2 and a half years now. I also play guitar a little bit, but mainly bass.
I have a '60s reissue Fender Jazz Bass, sunburst with tortoise shell pickguard. I also have two other basses, but there shitty brands and I don't play them anymore (they were my beginner basses).
I've been in a few short-lived bands, but I haven't had much success. I reeeeally want to form a band that goes somewhere but it's hard to find people serious enough.
