I didn't see a general discussion thread for Underworld 1 & 2 so here's the "offical" one.
Now, I love Underworld as well as its sequel Underworld: Evolution but is it just me or does anyone else really hate the character of Michael Corvin. I find the character just to be bland. I understand in the Underworld mythos his ancestry is what started the vampires and werewolves and he became the first hybrid of a werewolf and a vampire but other then that is there really anything special about him.
Discuss.

These movies are godawful... but Kate Beckinsale in skintight leather cures a lot of ills. A lot.
I really wish they'd have written one that was ABOUT Selene and Michael, not about shootings and backflips and action. When I saw "Underworld: Evolution", I kept thinking "In 4 hours, they have not given me a damned reason to care about these characters." I'd be all for an Underworld 3 if it were character-driven rather than action-driven (or "cool-driven"). It's too bad really... especially since Katey-bear has sworn off making any more Underworlds. I say fine, but she can't make anymore movies without wearing a leather catsuit.

Last night, for some ungodly reason (perhaps to punish me for years of hedonism?), my brain dreamt up a scenario for Underworld 3 that was actually about people. Does this make me a bad person? Or worse... should I see a doctor????*

Underworld: Evolution surprised me.
I wasn't a fan of part 1. Sub-Matrix, gun-and-teen-goth-porn. However it's ending had a lot of potential.
However, so many sequels discard the previous entries plot developments in favour of a staus quo that's audience friendly. MiB2 brings back Agent K, Fiday 6 beings back Jason, many other horros do the same. I fully expected Michael to be killed and discarded in favour of Selene-as-hero despite being made such a big deal in part 1. And it seemed to go that way... BUT then it did the other twist and had him really survive. Something I was glad of and made the fact he was special all the more clear.
That said, it did still kill off the villain of part 1 in a way that's similar to the way I described. But again, at least that was set up at the end of the last one.

I really like both movies and am excited for the third one. I like any movie if I can know why I like it, and I find Underworld justifiable. I like the style, cinematography, the story works for me (the idea that both species are connected really adds something), and Kate Beckinsale could be the most attractive thing I've ever seen. I'm glad that the third film will focus on the beginning of the war and Lucian. I thought it was interesting that two thirds into the first film you find out that you were rooting for the wrong people. So I like it, and I welcome the next one.

I got to seeing Underworld: Evolution last night.
It was bad. My friends insist it was amazing and brilliant, but I thought that it was total ass. Can't say I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Love this franchise, it's really a great interpretation of a long, on-going war between vampires & werewolves.
