After our Crystal Pepsi discussion in the snack foods thread, it dawned on me that no one's restarted the ever-loved fucked-up sodas thread.

Right now I'm drinking that new limited edition Mountain Dew Game Fuel, which is described as Dew with "an invigorating blast of citrus cherry flavor." It's pretty good--I think it tastes a lot like that Red Vault stuff, though.

Ahh..a very much needed thread DM. I had that new Diet Coke the other day that supposedly has calcium and other good stuff in it. It tasted the same to me. Why don't they just get rid of the less healthy Diet Coke and hold on to the healthier (I use that term EXTREMELY LOOSELY) version?

I have a weakness for Mello Yello. I could probably take or leave every other soft drink, but an ice-cold Mello Yello from a bottle or can* hits the spot.

*I don't like Mello Yello from a tap, though. It's funny, but I prefer Coke and Diet Coke and Dr. Pepper out of a tap, but I prefer Sprite and Mountain Dew and Mello Yello out of a can or bottle. I wonder if that has to do with anything or not.

Eh, they can have it. I like cucumber as much as the next guy, but it's not exactly a flavor I'd like to have in a coke. It's weird the amount of flavors we have here (Jones Turkey & Gravy, anyone?) because I think most of us are pretty brand/flavor loyal, no? I'll sometimes mix it up and get a Pepsi or an RC, but 9 times out of 10 I'm getting a Dr. Pepper, Coke, or 7-Up.

The Nehi Peach drink is pretty good, too, though.

That's just sick.

I do agree that some drinks taste better out of a fountain than a can or bottle. I noticed that drinking Hawaiian Punch out of a fountain tastes way better than a can, which has the metallic taste and a bottle.

See, I am the exact opposite. I actually cannot stand any kind of Coke in the can, because I think the can gives it a metallic taste. I prefer Coke in the bottle, and nothing beats Coke in a glass bottle. You usually won't find me without a bottle of Cherry Coke in my hand.

I don't drink soda anymore. I haven't for the past 3-4 years(maybe once every few months). I do like the way it tastes though, I just choose not to drink it because its so fattening and unhealthy. Also, caffeine has a really really bad effect on me for some reason. Coca Cola is my favorite though.....ice cold:).

Just Jeans

I think the metallic taste must be a mental thing, unless people are getting different cans from me. I do think soda tastes different depending on what you're drinking it out of (a can, a bottle, a fountain), but I've never had a soda that I thought tasted metallic.

The reason soda out of the fountain is so good is because it has more syrup in it (or at least it can, depending on how well one wires in the syrup bags). When I was working at McDonalds, I would give the syrup bag a bit of a squeeze when I was getting a cup of Sprite. By the time I was done drinking it, I felt like Fry in Futurama, after he's had all those cups of coffee.

I do like the way it tastes though, I just choose not to drink it because its so fattening and unhealthy.

If I'm going to drink soda at all, I'm going to drink Sprite Zero from now on. I've always liked how it tastes, and the thing isn't very unhealthy at all (no calories, no sugar, no fat, no Carbohydrates, no caffeine). About the only bad thing going in a bottle of Sprite Zero is the carbonation.

Ron
08-17-2007, 09:33 PM
I think fountain soda probably tastes better because the tonic water and syrup are added right before serving.

Just Jeans
08-17-2007, 10:20 PM
That's probably got something to do with it, Pete, but I'm pretty sure it's also because there's a lot more syrup in the fountain drinks.

If you ever work at a joint that serves fountain drinks, try some of the pure syrup sometime. :hypno:

Or, if you have a mom 'n pop pharmacy (I'm not sure if the chains carry it) you can almost always find Coca-Cola syrup for sale. As I mentioned somewhere else on the board, sugar is an anti-emetic (anti-nausea) and has long been a folk remedy for upset stomach. Get some Coke syrup, pour a little over ice chips, and there you go.

Emetrol, an over-the-counter nausea medicine, is basically flavored sugar syrup.

My all-time favorite is Root Beer. I also really like Pepsi and Mountain Dew/Mountain Dew Code Red.

I recently discovered this one Root Beer that's REALLY good. It's called Henry Weinhard's Root Beer. It's a "draught style" root beer. It comes in bottles, in a pack of 6. It's the best i've ever had. I guess it's hand brewed, and they make it with vanilla and sassafras(sp?). If you ever come across it, I recommend trying it.

I like their Ocean Water drink. It's a good summer flavor.

I'm just not fond of any of Sonic's food items, outside of like an ice cream cone or something. It always tastes like it should be sold under the bleachers at a JV football game or something. I know some people that adore it, but since Sonic here is right next to Dairy Queen, I have no reason to go there, usually.

Dublin Dr. Pepper is really good. They actually still put it in glass bottles with the old 10, 12, and 2 logo. For some reason, drinking it out of glass just makes it taste even better. It's like heaven took a dump in my mouth.

Here's an interesting article I found:

Diet Soft Drinks: Scary Warning!
You drink diet sodas so you won't get fat. It's the healthy thing to do, right? Uh oh. Now comes word from the Boston University School of Medicine that diet drinks can boost your risk for heart disease just like full-calorie, sugary sodas. The Associated Press and Reuters report that people who drink more than one diet soda daily have the same risk for heart disease as those who consume sugary sodas, according to a large study led by Dr. Vasan Ramachandran.
But before you throw out all your diet drinks: Note there is no cause-and-effect relationship; diet drinks do not cause heart disease. Instead, it's a surprising link for which more research is needed.

Using data from a subgroup of the massive, multi-generational heart study that followed residents of Framingham, Mass., the researchers found that people who drank more than one diet or regular soda a day had a 44 percent higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome four years later than those who consumed less than one soda a day. Metabolic syndrome, which increases the risk for heart disease, has several symptoms: excessively large waistlines, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, low levels of "good" cholesterol, and high levels of triglycerides. "When you have metabolic syndrome, your risk of developing heart disease or stroke doubles. You also have a risk of developing diabetes," Ramachandran told Reuters. Researchers, who expected those who drank regular soda to have a greater risk of developing metabolic syndrome than those who stuck with the diet drinks, were quite surprised by the study results.

Specifically, those who drank one or more soft drinks--regular or diet--daily had a:
--31 percent greater risk of becoming obese.
--30 percent increased risk of developing a larger waist circumference.
--25 percent higher risk of developing high blood triglycerides.
--25 percent greater risk of developing high blood sugar.
--32 percent increased risk of having low high-density lipoprotein or "good" cholesterol levels.
--And all of this adds up to a 44 percent higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome.

Ramachandran was surprised there wasn't a difference in risk between the regular and diet soda drinkers. He surmises that while drinking no-calorie diet sodas won't make you fat, it could increase your craving for more sweets. Barry Popkin, of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, doesn't put much credence into the findings, although he says the results aren't all that unexpected. He says diet sodas are largely consumed by people who have unhealthy lifestyles, even if they are thin, and it's those unhealthy habits that lead to the increased risk of heart disease--not the diet soda. The study findings were published in the journal Circulation. The American Heart Association, which publishes Circulation, clarified that diet sodas do not cause heart disease and cautioned that it's better to have a diet drink than a full-calorie soda.

If it's green apple, it might be Jones Soda, which is good stuff. I actually submitted a picture that got used on their labels once upon a time, in high school.

The secret to the green apple coke is to put a green apple Jolly Rancher in it.

Diet pop only tastes bad at first, because you're used to the sugar. Once you've drank it for about a month, it's not that bad. Fortunately, diet pop has improved. I remember the first time I drank Diet 7-UP and it tasted like shit. When I opted to switch last year, I found that they had improved the formula after regular 7-UP changed it's formula. I haven't had Diet Root beer drinks yet. I did Barqs and didn't like it, but this was back in 99.

I think that urban legend comes more from logic-- Aspartame breaks down into formaldehyde, and formaldehyde (and most dialdehydes) are carcinogens (cancer-causing agents).

Even if it were true, either way you are screwed. Sugar causes you to get obese and have a heart attack, Aspartame will give you cancer and kill you... if you must drink soda a lot, ma as well be diet. Nothing wrong with a can or two a day especially if you are active-- it's when you devour a 2 liter or two a day.

Sean [The Wildcard]
05-14-2009, 07:33 PM

I got to try a really good celery-flavored soda when I went to IL for Christmas. It had a very smooth and light citrus-grassy flavor to it with just a slight celery aftertaste that just caresses the back of the palate.

I found it to be quite refreshing. I wish I could remember the name of it. One other thing I have become hooked on is Nesbitt's Honey Lemonade. Hard to find, but it's the shiz-nit! :-)

I can't tell a difference. I did notice a difference with 7-UP between can/bottle and fountain way back in 97, before the formula change. I didn't have too many opportunities to drink the fountain version, but when I did, I could tell a slight difference. Same with Hawaiian Punch.

Glass bottles are the best, but are too expensive and too hard to find; after that, I would rather have a can.

Man, it's been almost twenty years since I've had a glass bottle of pop. I think the last one I had was in early 1992, when I had accidently dropped a bottle of 7-UP when I was on my way to my friend's house. Damn thing slipped right out of my hand and shattered on the sidewalk. Some kid who's properity I was on, saw me and for some reason thought I had thrown it. So when I came back a bit later, he was telling his father or grandfather that I had intentionally broken the bottle.

That must be available only in Nebraska. I've never heard of that one before.

-----

I've stated this many times, but they REALLY need to bring back Holiday Spice Pepsi. I thought it was damn good. The other thing I noticed is the lack of Vanilla Coke. I actually can't remember the last time I saw it at any grocery store or gas station. What the hell?!

Not technically soda, but I've fallen in love with Calypso lemonades lately. The black cherry lemonade in particular is sublime.

Recently I have pulled an 180.

I used to dislike Regular Coke, now I love it. The perfect refresher, just one a day makes me content.
I used to love Dr. Pepper, now I dislike it. Sorry, it just leaves my mouth desiring for more.

By the way, they sell glass bottles for about $1.69 and a small plastic bottle for $1.50.

No, it's national. Coke even has it in their headquarters and the new fountains that have all Coke products available.

Many compared it to Surge. I've been to several grocery stores, two different Wal-Marts and to McDonald's and found it's not available. But Coke still lists it as being available.

And I still miss Upside Down 7-UP or DnL.

Anybody tried 7Up Retro yet? Made with real sugar, just like Pepsi and Mountain Dew Throwback, and Heritage Dr. Pepper.

Damn, I would love to try that, but I've sworn off non-diet drinks. Shit is like crack, so I'm sure I'd be hooked with just one can.

I'll jump on this grenade. Saturday, I shall seek it out.

I haven't had Code Red Mountain Dew in awhile, so the other day I picked up a 12 pack of it.

When I was younger, I would've been really psyched about that Retro 7-Up. But I haven't liked it in awhile. But the kid in me still might cave and buy it anyway. :D

I might try it. Too bad it's not totally retro and has lithium-citrate in it. :o

I was able to find some Vault in a couple of different stores and snatched it up.

I could not find any 7-Up Retro in Wal Mart today. Bastards.

I've yet to find any 7UP Retro on shelves yet either. Must only be rolling it out slowly.

Finally tried Citrus Blast (well, the diet version). Not bad. Although they are very similar, I still prefer Fresca.

The retro 7-UP is available at the Hy-Vee store where I live, in both 12 packs and six pack bottles. I haven't purchased one yet. I would like to drink it in a single bottle, but I haven't had the opportunity to stop at a Bucky's yet.

Aw, screw that! 2-liter bottles or GTFO!

Lousy cheap soda manufacturers.

I STILL haven't found 7Up Retro anywhere yet. If they're wanting people to drink this stuff, they're doing a pretty lousy marketing job.

Where? I've never even heard of that store before.

Omaha, Nebraska.

It's mostly a midwest store chain. Ashton Kutcher worked there before becoming famous.

That jerk off is from my neck of the woods.

Yeah, I've worked at Hy-Vee during my salad days. We've got two of them here at Ames.

Finally tried 7UP Retro. Not bad. I still think modern 7UP still tastes a bit off, though. Wish they'd never tinkered with their formula a dozen or so times.

Anyone else tried Dr. Pepper 10?

http://www.diet-blog.com/upload/image/dr_pepper_10.jpg

Its not bad, but tastes kind of like slightly flat Dr. Pepper. I think I'll stick with regular or Diet.

I think I've said it on here before, but Dr. Pepper 10 makes me PISS. I've had one today and it made me pee so much that this 100 minute movie I watched almost turned into a 2 hour affair. FUCK.

It tastes decent, I guess, but I don't even know if I could tell a difference between it and regular diet.

I've had it.

Tastes like Dr. Pepper for the most part until the after taste segment kicks in which turns it more into a Diet type.

what yall know about Faygo? (and don't say anything about ICP)

my fav Faygo flavors:

RedPop
Rock & Rye
Cola (better than Coke & Pepsi)

For really cheap pop, Faygo is actually pretty decent. I've had the Root Beer and Orange Pop. However, the Red Pop is disgusting and tastes like Robitussin. :X
