View Full Version : Rare Slashers
Yep, this is the place to discuss them, ask questions, review them, or just plain bitch about them. Enjoy!:)

Well, the one rare slasher that comes to mind is Buried Alive. Anyone seen that one? Jennifer Jason Leigh and William Atherton are a couple of lovers that try to kill Leigh's husband Tim Matheson for the insurance dollars. Catch is, they didn't give him enough poison and he broke out of his tomb to return for some bloody revenge. He was a counstruction worker, so he kills them off in this elaborate maze-like trap that he built while they were trapped in the basement. He wears a welder's helmet to conceal his identity, and he's really the one that we root for. It's a tense little picture. Tim Matheson was badass. The Otter strikes back!!!!

Yeah, I have that movie (Buried Alive) I like it a lot. I haven't seen Buried Alive II yet, but I'm gonna get it. There's also Edgar Allen Poe's Buried Alive which is also good.
As for rare slashers, one that I have seen recently that I liked was Scream Bloody Murder (the 1970's one)

Buried Alive 2 was pretty good. A tad inferior, but still great. In that one, it's a wife left for dead by a cheating hubby. Tim Matheson returns to show her the ropes of revenge, and she traps the two lovers on a sunken yacht. Ally Sheedy is the wife character, and the film series' kills are better than ever.
I've been able to get my hands on a couple gems recently. One that comes to mind is 555. It's about a man who dresses like a hippie and kills couples every 5 years within 5 days. It's a pretty solid generic slasher.

Among some in my collection:
New Year's Evil- a laughably "so-bad it's still awful" slasher that was graciously burned off for me.
Slaughter High- a guilty pleasure. I caught it on HBO one insomiac filled night, and it's absurdness makes it so much fun. Who the hell takes a bath at a high school reunion? What the hell kind of high school has only 6 people attending for its reunion?
Madman- In the same vein as Friday the 13th. Has a notorious hot tub scene that will leave you feeling very awkward afterwards.
Stepfather- A movie that doesn't get the respect it deserves. It's truly a slasher film at heart. Terry O'Quinn gives a chilling performance and that you won't soon forget.
Kolobos- A pretty imaginative and well done slasher on a small budget. It's also extremely bizzarre. Not too many I know have heard of this film, but it's worth checking out.
Popcorn- Another unrecognized gem. Popcorn is another creative slasher that not many remember.
Ahh Popcorn was indeed a very overlooked slasher. Another favorite of mine is Honeymoon Horror which is a long forgotten great piece of slasher.

I love Popcorn haha.
What about the more obscure ones like:
Edge Of The Axe
Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker
Humongous
Killer Party
and sich?
So many movies...
yeah the list just goes on..
home sweet home
the night brings charlie
backwoods (not really a slasher, but sort of)
new year's evil
dream maniac
whodunnit
victims
to all a goodnight
sledge hammer
scream (1985)
savage weekend
nightmare in a damaged brain
beserker
the black room
blood massacre
blood tracks
bodycount
boarding house
deadline
death nurse
death row diner
the freeway maniac
house of death
iced
junior
meatcleaver massacre
murderlust....
just to name a few.

Night Warning (Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker) is one that I've been searching for for a while, ever since sites have been giving it top slasher reviews! Like Terror Trap for instance, which gave it 3.5/4...Hooray!
I own Silent Madness and Too Scared to Scream, and thought that they were both great obscure slashers.
Well...okay, TStS was below average, and Silent Madness wasn't great, but it was fun!
Blood Rage I just watched yesterday.
Humongous is a favorite of mine, and Fatal Games...for some reason...don't know why...
AHH! I used "...'s" so many times. I'm officially a bad writer. :(

Has anyone here seen Anguish with Zelda Rubenstein? It basically has the same premise as Popcorn with a killer in the theatre murdering moviegoers to the theme of the horror film on the screen, but it was made before Popcorn and I believe that it was done better.
"The eyes of the city are mine."
I forgot all about stage fright, well I don't think it's that rare, but it's a great slasher with some cool kills.

The rarest slasher I own is called Into the Darkness. It stars Donald Pleasance and his real life daughter, Polly. I picked it up for $3 and to date I can't even find a VHS cover pic of it anywhere online. I have found one review, and it's on IMDB from a guy who wrote it in 1999. It still doesn't have 5 IMDB votes. So, I believe I have one of the rarest slashers in existence, but I don't think it is worth much simply because no one knows it exists.

I liked Curtains... it was slow at parts but it seemed to always lead up to really good parts.
An underrated one is Fade To Black. A really weird slasher, but I like it a lot.
Pieces and Memorial Valley Massacre are a couple of rare good slasher films that I enjoyed. They are public domain so you can get them together form $10.

Anyone like killer bee movies?
The Killer Bees
The Savage Bees
Terror Out Of The Sky
Killer Buzz
Deadly Invasion
to name a few, and then killer vehicle movies.
Maximum Overdrive
Trucks (unofficial Max Overdrive remake)
The Car
Killdozer
Wheels Of Terror
Rolling Vengeance
I dunno, I get a kick out of horror movies with weird gimmicks like those.

Scab, I love Fade Into Black! I keep searching for a used copy to score cheap in used DVD stores.
A few more (probably aren't rare to us, but the mainstreamers probably haven't heard of them):
Mountaintop Motel Massacre
American Gothic
Deranged
Motel Hell
Iced
The Unholy (not a straight by the book slasher per say, but still, a damn fine film starring the hotness that is Ben Cross that never gets recognized)
And I forgot The Kiss. I absolutely love this movie, and I have only met one other person in real life who even knew it existed besides me. It made me afraid of escalators for life!

Yeah, THAT Ticks. Haha.. Ami Dolenz was one of my fave "scream queens" that never came to be. Ticks, Pumpkinhead, Witchboard, Demolition University... drools.
But I dunno, never saw it on DVD. I have a professional dub of it from Laserdisc on DVDr with a professional printed cover. It's a bootleg, but it's a DVD.

It's alone on a very crappy and incorrectly framed release from Germany, but here in the States its only available on the now OOP Midnite Movie feature along with Deranged. I lucked into finding a copy for 10 because there was no way I was paying the $50+ I have seen it go for on Ebay.
I just found out from the fangoria chopping list that there re-relesing Stagefright. That's a damn good slasher.
Is it on DVD alone? I know it's on a DF with Deranged.
I personally own the double feature with Derranged (which was the better movie, and was inspired by Ed Gein) but I honestly did not think either movie was anything special. There are only a select few slasher films that I consider to be "good films."

Maybe one of you can help me with this one . . . There's a movie about a husband who reads his wife's diary and finds out she's cheating on him with several guys. So he kills them off one by one. I can't think of the movie's name but it stands out in my memory because one of the kills involved a ceiling fan. He replaced the ordinary blades with machetes. Anyone?

Some recommendations and general comments...
Class Reunion Massacre (aka: The Redeemer) - I can't say enough good things about this movie. Creepy as hell, with a great atmosphere and a truly scary killer. This one was a total surprise. Seek it out at all costs.
Hospital Massacre - Okay, okay...the real reason I enjoy this is because of the uncommonly long nude scenes with Barbi Benton, but still. The movie does have a weird feel to it, the killer is completely insane, and hospitals are always kinda spooky. Worth tracking down if you can find it at a decent price.
Night School - Hopefully, Warner Bros. will release this on DVD before too long. Great little slasher. Almost has a giallo feel to it, but it's a slasher, no doubt about it.
Scream - NOT the 1996 Wes Craven film, but the long lost early 80's slasher. This movie is downright spooky at times, due to the nature of the killer and the filmmakers managed to create a creepy, desolate atmosphere out of next to nothing. This is a weird one. I don't really recommend it because it drags a LOT, but it's just so odd in general, I really want others to see it just to be able to discuss it with them.
House on Sorority Row - Not too rare these days (hey, it has a legit DVD release, at least), but not a lot of people have seen it. Very good slasher with a decent cast, and a pretty creepy killer. I just love campus slashers.
Final Exam - By all accounts, I should NOT like this movie...it's pretty slow, there is no nudity, and it has next to no blood...but I really enjoyed it. I think I'm just a sucker for campus slashers, and the filmmakers created a slow, but strangely engaging film. I think the fact that you never learn the killer's motivations at all...just some random guy going nuts also helped the film.
The Mutilator - Definitely not in the slasher top 10, but definitely watchable. For one thing, they show the killer entirely too much. If they're going to show the killer, the killer should at least be scary. Nope. Just looks like your average drunken slob. However, the gore is both over the top and interesting. The notorious "hook" scene...yikes! Good stuff. Can't wait for Code Red's DVD of this one.
Silent Madness - Pretty drab all around. I would have loved to have seen this in 3-D as it was originally produced. Pretty much, the early-mid eighties 3-D gimmick resurgence is the entire reason this film exists at all. Otherwise, it's pretty lame. Lame killer, lame cast, lame setup.

I've seen all of those but The Redeemer, Hospital Massacre, and Scream. I like 'em all, Mutilator and Night School probably my choices for weakest of the bunch. But they're all fair, and must-haves for slasher fans. Especially Sorority Row!
Anyone remember the Clown at Midnight? It came out in like 1998 or something and wasn't overly bad.

I wouldn't really call MMM very rare IMO. The Anchor Bay single DVD, not to mention double feature with The Initiation (!) has brought it out of obscurity.
But yeah, VERY underated. I can't believe the many viewers who disliked it. I mean, it was slasher gold! An easy 7/10+.

I would also add:
- The Prowler/Rosemary's Killer
- Christmas Evil (Totally got overlooked with the whole SN, DN fiasco)
- Funhouse (This one seems to be Tobe Hooper's unknown film among the mainstreamers. Believe me, I have asked them.)
- The Boogey Man (No, not that dreadful Barry Watson film, but a bizarre little flick from the early 80's featuring a possessed mirror)
And while not a slasher, I got to say that "The Running Man" is the film I get more blank stares at than any other film hands down. It's my absolute favorite Arnold flick, and one of my favorite action films ever. I was sure it was a box office hit, and yet no one ever seems to know what I am talking about.
Some great choices DP. I loved Funhouse. I especially loved the way that the killers face looked..it was gross.

Yeah JoshG, it's kinda alright when stores clear out their VHS sections cause you can pick some stuff up, but I would prefer stores keeping their old videos because I get so nostalgic in stores that VHS (which are nonexistent where I live).
Has anybody seen the movie Brainscan? It had Eddy Furlong from T2 in it. It's kind of a slasher and I found it pretty disturbing actually. Damn I wish I could find my old recorded copy.

It's been a long time since i've seen it, but Dark Night of the Scarecrow was pretty good. It's SORT of a mix of a slasher and a ghost story, in a way.
Yeah Dark Night of the Scarecrow is another good movie.

Sleepaway Camp (1983)
The Burning (1981)

Slaughter High and Humongous are pretty fun too.

Slaughterhouse - One of my favorites. :) Some MIGHT call it a TCM rip-off.
Just Before Dawn - Good backwoods slasher
Tourist Trap - Great 70's horror film. Sort of like a mixture between The House of Wax and The Hills Have Eyes

Killer Party
Killer Party is great! I love it, haha. There was definitely some Exorcist/Poltergeist influence, such as the scene with the wall climbing, lol. The kills were really unique, too.
The VHS cover is great. I should search around for mine.

10-10-2007, 07:45 PM
Killer Party is a weird in the sense that you can tell it was hacked apart and it started filming in the late 70's and then resumed in the 80's. I think it's a fun film, but it's a movie that was hurt by the cut gore that we'll never see. The gore was cut so bad that it took the movie with it.
But it remains 80's cheese and a fun movie.
Joshg
10-10-2007, 08:17 PM
Yeah. Usually I don't take much off from a horror film for having lack of gore, but in Killer Party, I actaully took off 20% of its mark due to the lack of gore, just because it was so irritating. I know that sounds childish, but I couldn't stand that! Hopefully an uncut version will appear soon. That would be awesome

Pivotal scenes which were supposed to make an impact did not because the death was removed (offscreen).

Haha, if you can make sense out of that sentence, I salute you.
I just watched a slasher from 1977 Sunday called Axe (aka, Lisa, Lisa)...IMO....it sucked beyond belief!!! 2/10. So dull, so boring, and just plain forgettable. What a shame, it has such nice cover art.

I have that DVD. I sorta liked it, but it was boring. Wayyy too much dead time happens in between the deaths. Much like Unhinged.
Joshg
10-10-2007, 11:36 PM
I agree, in the way that it was like Unhinged. But the difference is that at least Unhinged had a worthy payoff at the end. Just when you think the film is, for the most part, goreless/bloodless...it gives you chopped up bodies in a shed! Holy S!!!

scab, that's the Jason from your short fan film, right? I like the look you came up with. :) It looks pretty similiar to Part 5.
sCabbOy
10-12-2007, 12:26 AM
Yeah, it is. It is the part V Jason... the mask was made to resemble the mask at the end in Tommy's hallucinations. Made by FOD... the undermask is a faceless/hood Part 4, and the clothes are similar to the Part 5 Jason. At one time we were talking about doing a Jason Vs Roy fan film, but I dunno... it seems stupid but we may still do a short 5-10 minute one.

I need to track down The Brain. It was pretty cheesy, but it was fun....from what I remember. That's the one where this Doctor has a TV show, and is teamed up with this Alien brain. He wants to regain control of all of humanity. I remember the SFX being pretty decent, actually.

I just recommended some slasher films for Code Red to release a second ago. The scary part is that I haven't seen any of them! :D Haha, I just looked around on the web for some slasher titles, and listed them. Aside from Scream, Ghost Dance, American Nightmare and Stage Fright (aka Nightmares) I don't know an awful lot about them. Has anyone seen these obscurities?
Ghost Dance (1980)
City of Blood (1983)
Stage Fright (1980)
Scream (1982)
Island of Blood (1982)
Straight Jacket (1982)
American Nightmare (1983)
Trick or Treats (1982)

'Don't go in the woods... alone' 10/10 on the so bad it's good rating. Despite the terrible acting, bad editing and everything else, the kills are awesome, great use of experimental music and it has a strong gritty atmosphere. American Nightmare is great, I love that movie.
As for the Grindhouse release of Pieces, from what I understand it's REMASERED from original intact negatives, so hopefully it's complete.
As for more rare slashers, up until Code Red released Splatter Farm I would have listed that. The VHS release of Splatter Farm, well... that movie was so horribly edited together the credits were writing on paper and the background music would stop when there was dialog because they didn't know how to edit/layer sound while editing it. The release on DVD made the movie so much better, newly edited, new credits, rescored...
Spare Parts is another good one, it's sort of slow at times and not really a slasher... but close enough. It's about an old decrepit motel who sells it's guests to a hospital that salvages their body parts for transplants (sort of like that new movie Vacancy).

The Dream Master
01-21-2008, 09:16 PM
I'm guessing Boo is talking about the set with these flicks:
- Don't Look in the Basement ( Forgotten, The ) (1973)
- Memorial Valley Massacre (1988)
- It Happened at Nightmare Inn ( Vela para el diablo, Una ) (1970)
- Demon, The (1979)
- Deep Red, The Hatchet Murders ( Profondo rosso ) (1975)
- Pieces (1983)
- Silent Night, Bloody Night (1973)
- Night of Bloody Horror (1969)
- Horror Rises from the Tomb ( Espanto surge de la tumba, El ) (1973)
Deep Red and Don't Look in the Basement are good. I wouldn't mind picking this set up, but for $9, I expect the quality to be crap.

sCabbOy
01-21-2008, 11:03 PM
It's a slasher, sort of a so bad it's good one. It's about twins (the Polonia brothers, b movie directors) who go to their grandma's farm for the summer. The farm's handyman is a killer, and the grandma is sort of defending him.
It's silly, I mean the grandma drugs one of the kids and rapes him... and one of the guys gets fisted in the ass to death. The grandma gets dinomite up her vagina and blow to pieces. It's shot on VHS, and sort of cheap.
MaDMaNMaRz
01-21-2008, 11:11 PM
Most of Camp's releases technically aren't slashers. Although i'd sort of consider Killing Spree to be one...but not your typical slasher. Overall, i'd have to say Cannibal Campout is about the best movie Camp has released. That one is actually pretty good for a SOV horror movie. The FX are surprisingly good too.
Camp released Woodchipper Massacre also, correct? I know I'm gonna sound crazy, but I actually really liked that movie.

Well, I'd call a slasher any movie with a killer that racks up a body count. Woodchipper is on Camp, and that's really not a slasher. It's more like Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead type of movie. Cannibal Campout is also on Camp, another SOV movie... really well done, gory and is a slasher.
One of THE hardest to find slashers that are SOV that I have is Lunch Meat. It's actually pretty good, for SOV... it's not even on IMDB and it had a national VHS release.
hey scab, what's the basic premise of Lunch Meat??

I picked up I'll Kill You...I'll Bury You...I'll Spit on Your Grave Too! on VHS today. I only paid $5.99 for it. It's pretty rare from what I know, so that was a good find.

A cannibal family sells "Lunchmeat" to a local restaurant. On their way to the restaurant to sell it they see a group of teens, and of course, bu coincidence they follow them (they are coincidently going to the SAME woods the rednecks are from to go camping) back to the woods and kill them.
The movie is shot on VHS, and has some gore but really doesn't have a lot.
As for Ill Bury You... I have that DVD, and haven't watched it in a long time. I thin that's shot on video as well, or at least shot on 16mm and transferred to VHS like Revenge (Blood Cult 2).
Here's a custom DVD cover I made for my Lunchmeat rip (VHS to DVD)

That's a good definition. Although, there are some movies that I consider slasher films that don't have a high bodycount. Take Dressed To Kill for instance. That has a killer, who stalks and slashes...the bodycount is really only one (although, 3, if you count dreams). But it goes with the rest of the formula, so I still think of it as a slasher.
Then there's the killers. Sometimes killers aren't so human, like, uh...well, in honor of MaD, I'll choose House By the Cemetery. It has a zombie-ish villain. Or, undead. But it uses knives, impales people, and causes much mayhem that a slasher would. Therefore, it is much less a zombie flick, more a splatter slashfest.
Again, going with Lucio Fulci, his City of the Living Dead film has a bodycount. But these are your standard zombies, that don't use anything but their hands, and travel in packs. While looking at the bodycount, and seeing when they were performed makes you think it's a slasher, watching it, and noticing the distinct fraying of zombieness changes it completely. Basically, it's not a slasher. :D
Umm, so...I'm hungry. :)

01-22-2008, 10:14 PM
I consider zombie movies slashers, zombie is a sub-genre of slasher. Zombies are the killer and they rack up a body count whether or not it's high or low. But, really, there's no real definition and movies are jsut movies- no real genre/sub-genre if you think about it.
Joshg
01-22-2008, 10:37 PM
Zombies are bodycount films, but bodycount films aren't necessarily slashers. IMO.
sCabbOy
01-22-2008, 11:05 PM
No, but if it's a body count from a KILLER it may as well be. A serial killer is considered a slasher, hence The Gainesville Sasher (Danny Rolling) and so on. Of course there are debates with this, but quite frankly it's just debatable because there's no specific definition and if there was the genre of the movie is up to the person watching.
I consider films like Hostel, Saw, and Cabin Fever slashers as well. They rack up bodycounts. Some people only consider a film with a masked killer to be a slasher.
Joshg
01-22-2008, 11:10 PM
Cabin Fever is kinda a slasher. Saw is a slasher. Hostel...yeah, it's different.
They are all different, but not all slashers are the same thing. Just a different take.

After much searching, I finally found the DVD cover art for a Code Red release.
Sole Survivor, due out this April, keeps it original in this nicely put-together DVD package. I found it at Navarre's site, so it's legit:

Well, they are still looking for extras, so I feel their pain. LOL,
But just wait it out, and it'll come. A SE I hope!
There's a lot of fuss going on with NIGHTMARE and THE REDEEMER releases over at Code Red's blog and all over IMDB. The Redeemer is no longer being released by Code Red because of the crappy $1 DVD everyone has, and Nightmare...they're working on as best they can. But people are being complete idiots, trolling their blog and such. Uh!
But it and THE MUTILATOR are due out this year. They update their blog often, unlike many other sites. A shame they aren't given credit. If it's time they need to make a good release, I think they deserve it. We don't want a half-ass DVD now do we?
BUTCHER, BAKER, NIGHTMARE MAKER,
NIGHTMARES IN A DAMAGED BRAIN
THE MUTILATOR

Chris - Yeah, the original DVD can get quite high in price. Much like the SN, DN DF, i've seen it go for around $50 or so! I know you're a big Fulci fan, so I think you'll enjoy The New York Ripper. It's sort of a mix of a giallo and a slasher.
I'm also looking forward Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker...as well as Nightmares in a Damaged Brain. They have a alot of good releases on the way.
I may watch Deathrow Diner tonight.

I got a DVD of Nightmare that was professionally transferred, professional cover and so on. It's the Nightmare VHS version hybrid with the cut gore, extended scenes and TV scenes. I also have Nightmare Big Box VHS... so, unless the Nightmare DVD was going to be widescreen (it wasn't) with commentary and featurette I wouldn't care if it wasn't released.
As for The Redeemer, I have that on DVD both as The Redeemer and Class Reunion massacre, on VHS again both as Redeemer and CRM. So, again if the DVD from Code Red wouldn't be widescreen with extras I don't care much.
Joshg
01-25-2008, 12:56 AM
Code Red's Redeemer prbably wouldn't have been widescreen. But we would have had some awesome features! Oh well, I wasn't itching to see it much anyways.

I know it's not a slasher flick, but I'm thinking about buying their Media Blasters "Jules Verne's The Fabulous Journey to the Center of the Earth" just because it'll be out of print soon. I have Grizzly, 30th Ann. Release. Love it!
I have the creepy "Don't Go in the House" slasher from 79/80.
I bought the slasher 3-pack, which had "Hitcher in the Dark" (Not a slasher!!!), "Hell High", and "The Majorettes". High and Hitcher were good, but Majorettes sucked! There's a film that should be remade. It had a good story going, but was screwed up. See directors! You remake bad movies, not good!

It's a character study-like slasher. Although, without knives, and inserting a blow torch! Eeek! I think the music helped me to enjoy "Don't Go in the House" a lot more than I would have without it. Very creepy disco-esque. And, even without blood and guts, it was a brutal film! I didn't think fire would help with brutality, but I was wrong!

I just watched a film from 1988 called "Jack's Back" starring James Spader.
It follows a 'Jack the Ripper' copycat 100 years later, mimicking the dates and deaths of five prostitutes. But a detective has problems of his own when he is killed, and his brother becomes the main suspect. The brother, and the detective's female friend, are getting closer and closer to finding the killer, while he/she gets closer and closer to finding them!
It's more of a psychological thriller, but there are some slasherish scenes. Granted, most of the deaths take place off-screen (no onscreen impalements, just before-hand screams) but there was a little bit of gore. Sadly, the five deaths of the prostitutes comes up short. When we enter the film, 3 have already been commited. I found it to go by fast, but many may find it a dull experience. I liked it. Good story. I recommend a buy of this for slasher fans, just for the couple horrific deaths.
Body count:
1. Prostitute - Mutilated (Only Mentioned)
2. Prostitute - Mutilated (Only Mentioned)
3. Prostitute - Killed (Only Mentioned)
4. Prostitute - Throat slit; cut up (Offscreen; Aftershots Shown)
5. Prostitute - Abortioned!!! Throat and Stomach sliced, bloody (Offscreen; Aftermath Shown)
6. Man - Hung by a Knoose
7. Man - Stabbed (Not shown entering body)

It reminds me more of those 1980's redneck/city slicker revenge films (Trapper County Warr, Rolling Vengeance, Deliverance) than TCM.

I just re-watched "Offerings" anyone see this? It was a DTV indie film from the 80's which was a direct Halloween ripoff (all the way down to the score). It's about a young boy who was made fun of by his friends and eventually falls into a well because of their bullying. He's saved and then is put into a mental home. He escapes one day and kills his old friends who are now all grown up.
It's really low budget and sort of... genric, but I love this film.
