View Full Version : Snack Foods We Miss

Don't you just hate getting a craving for a certain snack food only to find that its been discontinued?

Well, this is the thread for you. Please post the snack foods (or foods in general) you miss.

Tonight, I got a craving for a something I didn't even know the name of. I knew it was a cheese puff that came in a can. Every Google search I tried with "cheese puff" or "cheese ball" came up with recipes for things Bree Van De Kamp would bake for parties.

I thought long and hard, and I finally remembered the can the cheese balls came in had the peanut guy with the top hat, monocle, and cane. Then I had to try to remember HIS name. I typed in "peanut Mr." which brought up "Mr. Peanut" and Planters Peanuts. Yes! This was it. I typed in "Planters Cheese Balls," and what do I find?

They've been discontinued. Grr, all that work for no pay off. I could have thrown my computer out the window.

Another food I really miss is Kentucky Fried Chicken's (before they were just known as KFC) Chicken Littles. These were just generic chicken patties on a soft, small bun with a dab of mayonnaise and a slice of pickel. They were just delicious, and I know it sounds like it would be easy to create your own, but it's not. I think the bread and chicken Kentucky Fried Chicken used is what really made the Chicken Little soooooo good, and they were cheap, too (I think my Mom told me they were 50 cents).

McDonalds Pizza

It was actually quite good for a fast food burger place that attempted to make pizza

Hmm... I can get into this.

Brach's Rocks Candy
Mountain Dew Pitch Black II
Hardees' Big Chef Burger
Hardees' Western Bacon Thickburger (the epitome of all sandwiches)
Burger King Rodeo Burger
Pepsi Blue
Kroger-brand Frookies (sugar-free cookies)
Gum Credit Cards
Gum Videotapes
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pudding Pies
Big-K Grapefruit Soda (same as Fresca, but way tastier)

I could go on forever. I'm just like Homer Simpson when the Krusty Ribwich was discontinued. I fucking freak out on the first store clerk that tells me of the product's death.

I don't recall if I ever ate it, but didn't their commercials used to have a jingle that went "I feel like chicken tonight, like chicken toniiiiight"? If it's still around in the states, I haven't seen it.

Church's is still around, at least here. My mother loves it, but I'm not a real big fan. We have this convenience store called Gary's that does the best fried chicken ever, but it's pretty spicy and full of grease and I dig that. :)

Church's is still around here, too, but I haven't been in years.

I usually only ever get fried chicken from a local place around here. It's excellent because their chicken apparently isn't mutated by steroids (as is the case with KFC).

Chicken Tonight is a Unilever brand (launched in the US in 1992 and the UK and Australia in 1993) of sauce that is added to chicken pieces in a skillet, available in flavors such as Apricot Chicken, Mustard Chicken and Thai Green Curry Chicken.

The associated advertising slogan is "I feel like Chicken Tonight". In one series of television ads, these words were sung by actors as they 'flapped' their arms in a movement similar to the chicken dance. This dance and song was performed by The Simpsons family in the episode "Lady Bouvier's Lover", as a parody of the effects on popular culture from persuasive television advertising.

The American version of the product quickly failed but it is still popular in Australia, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, where they even have a spin-off product, "Beef Tonight".

In the UK, there were commercials for Chicken Tonight featuring Arsenal legend Ian Wright.

Damn, I miss that stuff. I liked that Thai Green Curry stuff and some of the other things they made were good too. I am saddened that they don't make it anymore.

It's not really a snack food, but I remember when I was about 4 years old there were these little microwavable chilis that my grandfather used to buy, Libby's Diner. Ever since then I've searched for them only to be disappointed time and time again. I finally had to accept the fact that they were gone and never coming back.

Is Fruitopia not around any more? I can remember we had a Fruitopia machine in our high school, and, though I'd always get a coke at lunch, I'd usually get a Fruitopia after school when it was hot. I can still remember the funky design on that machine.

Now you can't even get a coke at the school anymore.

Fruitopia is long gone. I did a search on it sometime last year and I think at the Coca Cola website, it read that it was discontinued.

Hmm... I thought it was discontinued but it shows up on Coca Cola's website in a list that has all their drinks. It doesn't say it isn't available but it also doesn't say it is. I'll do some more investigating even if I have to call Coca Cola themselves!

BlakeTyner

Wikipedia says it was discontinued in 2001, after its brewmaster left Coca-Cola. Now any kind of fruit drinks are marketed under Coke's Minute Maid brand.

That's teh sad. It was sort of a generational icon.

Yes, the wiki article says it's still available in Canada and the UK, but the flavor is different than what we had.

SURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGE!!!

I remember when the introduced it, there were little plastic Surge "shot glasses" next to the fountains, and you could sample it. A buddy of mine was working at an all night convenience store, and we'd line those little fuckers up 10 at a time, as a caffeine delivery system. Good times.

Vault tastes mostly the same, but it was the Surge branding that really made it work for me.

Yeah, roughly '92-'93. I remember there were ads during a Dallas Super Bowl.

I remember every friday when I was little my parents would get pizza and we'd watch TGIF together. One Friday we got Crystal Pespsi when it first came out. I was about 7 so that was like 14 years ago, but I remember it tasted like regular pepsi. I don't think it caught on for this reason. A lot of times colors make us feel different about a product. For example: I remember when they came out with green ketchup, a few people told me how gross it tasted yet it had the same flavor as regular ketchup.

The Dream Master

I know I drank Crystal Pepsi back in the day, but I honestly don't remember if it just tasted like regular Pepsi or not. It seems like everyone says it did, so I'm guessing it's probably true.

BlakeTyner

Yeah, it tasted like regular Pepsi when it was cold or above. But when icy, it definitely had a medicine-y taste to it. I'd still drink it, actually, were it around.

What I miss is the Dr. Pepper gum. The gum itself had a cinnamon flavor to it, but inside each little square was a drop of DP syrup. Twas good.

Here's a question that's somewhat related to the topic at hand:

I just noticed that Trix went away from being fruit shaped--it's shaped like balls now--and it's being advertised as all new. Am I crazy, or weren't they like this until the early '90s when they changed to the fruit shape in the first place?

Terminator 2 Sour Meltdown Balls. They were like Jawbreakers, only these were the size of BB's, and were ten times more sour. They were so strong, in fact, that if you popped more than one or two, they would cause the inside of your cheek to peel. Powerful stuff.

Holy crap... how did I miss this? Thank heavens for 5th Golden Girl for resurrecting one of my old threads from the last board! I was about to recreate it when I thought I should do a search. Glad I did!

Anyway, I miss...

Yeah, the closest one to me was in Lexington and I'm pretty sure it's a Chuck-E-Cheese now as well. I actually really like Chuck-E-Cheese's pizza. Been a couple of years since I've last been, though.

Holy shit, them WWF Superstars of Wrestling Ice Cream Bars brings back alot of memories.

Like hearing the ice cream truck a few blocks away and running home to beg my mom for 50 or 75 cents (cant remember which, but they were definitely under a dollar) to buy one.

...then a few hours later the water ice truck would come and id beg for a dollar to get 2 soft pretzels and a small blue berry water ice. I used to drive my mom up the wall

Then I would dip my pretzels in the water ice.

Ahhh...the days

Just watched the last commercial and they sing "Showbizz Pizza, where a kid can be a kid!" Old ChuckeCheeses commercials sing the exact same song with the exact same line, just changin out the name of the place to ChuckeCheeses... I'm wondering if they indeed became ChuckeCheeses?

From Wikipedia...

Showbiz Pizza Place was a restaurant chain popular in the 1980s. Its history is greatly intertwined with that of its main competitor and eventual successor, Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre. Both companies found early success, owing partially to the rise in popularity of arcade games at the time. The basic concept was to offer pizza, a large selection of arcade games, and an animatronic stage show as a complete package of food and entertainment. The largest difference between the two, and easiest way to distinguish the two chains, was the different robotics and the mascots that each concept used. The mascot for Showbiz was Billy Bob, an overall-clad hillbilly bear.

HISTORY
The business was founded in Topeka, Kansas, in 1980[1] by Robert L. Brock, owner of Brock Hotel Corporation. At the time, Brock was quite successful as one of the largest franchisers in the Holiday Inn hotel system. Eighty percent of Showbiz Pizza Place was owned by Brock Hotel Corporation. The other 20 percent was owned by Creative Engineering, Inc. who was responsible for producing the animatronics show Showbiz used: The Rock-afire Explosion. In 1982, the company moved its headquarters to Irving, Texas. In 1984, the company purchased the assets of Chuck E. Cheese's, after that company declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They then proceeded to change the name of the company to Showbiz Pizza Time, Inc. Both restaurants were kept operating as separate entities. After disagreements over a period of years with Creative, Showbiz management decided to go ahead with a restructuring of the restaurants called "Concept Unification". This would consist of renovating all Showbiz animation into Chuck E. Cheese characters, as well as renaming all stores to "Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza". This would be the end for the concept known as "Showbiz Pizza Place", although the company is still in business, as the current management of the "Chuck E. Cheese's" concept is a direct line from the "Showbiz Pizza Time, Inc." era, with little connection to the original "Pizza Time Theatre" ownership. They are now known as CEC Entertainment Concepts, L.P.

The majority of former ShowBiz Pizza Place locations were converted into Chuck E. Cheese's. At the current time, there are around 83 converted "Rock-afire Explosion" shows still in use as "3-Stage" Chuck E. Cheese shows. Some stores were also closed at this time, while others converted to independent concepts, such as "Circus Pizza" (not to be confused with Circus World Pizza) and "Billy Bob's Wonderland" in Barboursville, WV, where the classic Rock-afire Explosion Band is still active. There are less than a handful of these stores still operational.

There are a few restaurants still using the Showbiz Pizza Place name and animation. All are located outside the United States, and have no connection to the original company. Known locations are in Lebanon, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.[citation needed] There has been one return of the brand in the United States, where it is now called Showbiz Pizza Zone. It is now closed.

Wow... Had no idea that Billy Bob's Wonderland in Huntington, WV is/was the same thing as Showbiz Pizza! Next time I'm over there, I'm definitely gonna stop in and grab some food. I always wondered what it was.

The biggest pop of the night wasn’t from Punk’s megaphone or the contract negotiation, or even when John Cena slapped CM Punk. The truth is the biggest pop of the night had everything to do with WWE Ice Cream Bars.

Yes, you are hearing that right. If you watched the show you are not questioning this now. The biggest pop the Boston faithful let out was for a failed WWE gimmick. This is just proof that the WWE fans are among the most fickle of any wrestling crowd. They’ll cheer crazy for Zack Ryder and Ice Cream bars, and boo their hometown kid, John Cena.

However, if we are to play detective and therapist we might be able to uncover the reason for such a loud pop on a product that half of the people in the arena would have had to Google just to remember what it looked like.

The most likely scenario is that the WWE tried and true weren’t as happy to hear the drop but more or less happy to see someone stick it to Vince McMahon. While there are times when Vince is well over with the crowd, especially when someone has attacked the WWE faithful, but the crowd is drawn to Punk’ honesty and they wanted to see him stick it to McMahon.

The ice cream was a ridiculous demand, but the demand was from someone who had Vince McMahon in the palm of it’s hand.

Now, since the WWE ice cream bars are trending on twitter and have been well searched this morning, don’t be surprised if the WWE puts the ice cream bar back into production. They would sell just about anything to make a dollar and with a younger audience making up their target demographic it’s entirely possible that they will try and capitalize on it, at least in limited production.

Ah, it’s a rare occasion when the WWE faithful can have a serious discussion about the WWE and their once delicious ice cream bars.

Were those ice cream bars really that good?

I would suggest they bring them back with the original superstars and images of old under the "WWE Legends" banner, but half those guys/girls are dead now. :/

Shit, here's how I'd do it.

-John Cena saluting the fans.

-The Rock raising his eyebrow.

-Shawn Michaels with his bald spot.

-Triple H putting it to Stephanie.

-CM Punk running off with the belt.

-Steve Austin flipping the bird while chugging a beer, with a black eyed Debra at his feet.

-Ric Flair's sagging man tits.

-Jeff Hardy's tombstone.

-Vince McMahon sitting at his desk, wearing that smug grin, with a big pile of cocaine like at the end of "Scarface" and stacks of cash in the background.

-Dave Batista buying his steroids.

-Mick Foley's teeth.

CM Punk was talking about getting Vince to bring those back (or something) on Raw (from what I heard). Something tells me the Boo approves, brother.

I'd spend $50 for sure and maybe $100 to fuckin' try them. When I first heard Punk mention this, I thought for sure they'd put them out again and I was going to try my damnedest and spare no expense to get my hands on some, even if most of the new WWE Superstars are useless tits. It would kill me to watch Superstars and Coliseum Videos when snotty kids in Hulkamania bandanas would be chowing on them.

McDonald's Chicken Fajitas.

When prepared right, they were awesome. One of the few things from McDonald's I really liked.

Now they are replaced by the inferior snack wraps (which are not bad but not as good).

It would be money well spent. I remember in 1991ish the WWF Ice Cream Bar got me in trouble as I spent a whopping $1.25 on one off the ice cream truck, the most expensive item there. "You spent HOW MUCH OF YOUR ALLOWANCE ON THAT?!" I think, though, that the grief was mostly because I spent money on something wrestling related, and not the most expensive Ice Cream Truck item.

I don't think I really liked this shit because I was such a picky eater, but I remember getting Big Foot Soup and Alligator Soup if anyone remembers those. Ninja Turtles cereal I actually liked, Nielson chocolate covered granola bars (they were hard instead of the chewy stuff you only seem to find today), Great Canadian Mint ice cream bars (the best on the planet, the inside had a hard chocolate core surrounded by mint ice cream covered in chocolate and nuts), BEEP "juice" drink, which was also my favorite and I tried to track it down for years. It's been officially discontinued.

That was my first cereal, I believe. I used to eat that a lot up until 1986 and then I started to eat both Fruity and Coco Pebbles a lot. Last time I had them was in 1990. That was whey they switched the packaging from pink to green.

Dunkaroos were one of my favorites, and they've been gone for quite a while.

I had a friend come over a few months ago and she brought Dunkaroos with her. She got them at the Dollar General down my street.

Eating them was hilarious because I did what I always used to do... I'd only take a little icing for each cookie because I thought I'd run out of icing, and then by the end I was having to use a lot of icing because there was more than expected there to be. :p
