Forum server crashes... they're a bitch.
This makes the third thread I've done about my movie, but that's all right. Perhaps it will give a bunch of you a chance to meet the movie, and will kick me in the pants to put it on youtube or something. That's no small task, as the darn thing is 91 minutes long!
I will post up some images and info soon.

My YouTube acct was deleted, and back then I could upload unlimited sized videos and they no longer offer that. I could upload it, bu it's have to be chopped up into 10 minute files which is a little more of a pain in the ass to do, but if you want Josh, I'll do it.

I'm actually still holding off on it, while "The Wait" gets finished. Good to see that you made it here, Scabby!
I've really got some great tools to use to maybe clean up the flick a little before putting it out. Nothing over-the-top, but some color filtering and correction (might help with the night stuff).

I'm really looking forward to seeing this Josh!

Thanks Peter! It's been done since 2004, and we had it in crappy wmv resolution at that time. I'm hoping to put it back up somewhere as soon as I get it cleaned up at bit, and the pressure to shoot my current movie is off (meaning- when we get done shooting that)

Hey, yeah, I forgot where we left off! Ha ha! This damn zombie movie has got me about half crazy anymore. It's been a F**king MONTH that the repair shop has had my camera! I could just about kill them.
Hey- just an update for you all- Nate THomas (Ethan) and Karolina Czerwinski (Heather) from "Friday the 13th- The Revenge" tied the knot back in March, and are now living in Chicago, Illinois! Congrats to them.

Long time in the making, but well worth it. The movie I have is good and if you are "making it better" that will just improve it.

Hey all!
I doubt very much that we'll put "Revenge" up on Youtube or Myspace. The time restrictions on videos are going to make Revenge a 9 part thing, and that's just too much to do.
Instead, we're going to have, of course, the free DVD. Donations to 3B via paypal would be accepted for anyone gracious enough to want to help us out with the cost of the blank lightscribe discs, but payments will not be required. The DVD will have (revised extras list):
*Outtake clips
*HUGE stills gallery
*Commentary track for movie (Which so far is Ed Post, Abbie Dwyer and myself)
The movie does include a scene that was cut for the internet release, which has the police officer in it.
If there's time, we'll do a short behind-the-scenes featurette, but that's difficult with the zombie flick still dragging on.
More info to come!

Seemed like when I priced them recently, it was like a 30-pack for $28 USD, but still, it's not gonna be cheap, especially when you consider the packaging. There will be some other goodies as well. We were thinking of doing some 18" X 24" posters.

Checked out the sites I mentioned earlier more closer, and it appears you can indeed uploud FULL movies on Stage6 (http://www.stage6.com/) and Veoh (http://www.veoh.com/) without having to cut the thing to bits. So if you're tired of the ten minute thing on youtube, then I advise you to check those out.

Yes- thanks for that, Scabboy! That trailer will seem like a bad dream compared to the trailer for the DVD, but I wouldn't expect that trailer before March. I'm a little sad that I didn't get my DVX100B until just recently. I would have LOVED to have shot "Revenge" with it, but this is life, and I was incredibly poor back then.
Also, a complete overhaul of the 3B website is in the works, too. I was very unhappy with the way it's looked for the last several months, and in particular, I was disturbed by the complete lack of attention that "Revenge" got. True, it's just a fanfic, and I won't be doing any more of those, but it was still a great project with a lot of fun memories- the site should have reflected that. That's what I get for farming out control of it, I guess...

Hindsight is always 20/20, and it seems like any movie you make you can look back and "wish" a lot.
I don't make even the same caliber of movies that you do, I just do fun short movies (but am currently doing a full length Friday fan film) and I always go back and wish I can reshoot whther it e bad angles, bad lighting or bad acting/directing/etc.

Well I know I can count on ya for a good, old school Friday flick! :jason: Hopefully you'll do it better than I did. I shudder to think how good "Revenge" would have been if I had known the first thing about lighting at night.
Of course, as you said, hindsight....
But hindsight would have been great to have as foresight. We pretty much wasted an awesome set, which we had the run of. I could have written a much better script once I knew I had that set, rather than sticking with the established script. Ah well, it was fun as hell, and I still chuckle when I watch it.

The lighting wasn't that bad, and I am not sure myself how to do it 100% correct but we use lights in the back more than int he front so you can see the people. But, I have nobody to teach me, I learn it myself. But... again I didn't think the lighting was horrible, just some shots the people get lost... bu not for long.
And yeah, the set was great. We were going to secure a Boy Scouts Camp to shoot ours in (with a donation) but we just could not afford the $100 a day they would charge us. We then were gonna do a day or two there and then the rest in the woods, then we decided not to at all. It was actually a camp on the same river that a piece of The Burning was filmed too (Tonawanda Creek) so that would have been cool.
I liked Revenge, however for some reason I've lost my copy of it from my HD! Let me know when it's re-uploaded :p

Basically, what I can tell you that would be the best advice is that you should go SLOW, take your time, and correctly light each shot. Light your subjects, preferably from more than one angle and not too "hot" so that they are *fully* lit. Then, make sure you light your background, to give some depth to the shots- whether the background is trees, a cabin, cars, what have you.
See- if it's night, no matter how you have it lit, an audience will understand that it's night. You can throw blue gels on there at times to give it accent. Colors on the lights was/is something I still don't fully understand.
And something else that was learned at GREAT cost during "Revenge"- if your camera has manual focus- USE IT! Auto focus in the dim light will burn you constantly.

I would love to go to Iowa to shoot haha, not sure of the others haha. But, the people who run the camp are really conservative and I am shocked they agreed to it even with daily fee.
As for lighting, it is the toughest part, I generally never shot in the night and did it for the first time with a short I made and it was impossible. We couldn't backlight and everything came out dark, but usable. I also learned that with auto focus. We did a drive up (in a car) shot in the dark (with some lighting) with autofocus for the shot and we ended up doing it 8 times before I did it manually.
But at any rate, I don't do this full time and usually whenever I have a day or two off with friends who also make them with me. Learning process can be slow like that...

Oh heck yeah- I was working full time as a police officer (and burning up most of my vacation time :D ) when we were shooting "Revenge". I can remember a stretch of nights throughout the summer of 2004 when it would be get off work at 3pm, drive my van 45 minutes to the camp, set up, wait for cast n crew, shoot until 12 or so, then pack up, and be headed home at 1:30 or 2 so that I could go to work at 7am. Horrible... draining... grueling... beastly... and I would do it all over again. :funky:
But the best thing you can do is study, ask, and most importantly of all (and this sounds weird), fuck things up. Yep, some of the best movie-making experiences I've had have been times when I was about ready to burn that damn camp down because something got screwed up. Then your brain says "yeah, moron, but if you do it again, you can do THIS and make it even cooler".
AND HEY! 20 new photos at the myspace page!

Just a quick couple of things to pass on:
The disc extras are becoming more interesting as I get more of the cast interested in coming on board. The commentary track (or trackS, as it's turning out) should be interesting.
Cast members Nate Thomas and Karolina Czerwinski, as I reported some time ago, are married and living out of state now, but plan to come back to do some extras for the disc, and hey-
They now have a 5 month old SON! Congratulations to Nate and KC!

Yep- Mick's still on board, though in an incredibly limited capacity since Slipknot is on tour right now. I can't remember if they're in Australia or Israel right now.
It's been a horror in itself to work on "The Wait", and I can't wait (ha ha) to be completely done with it.

Been a while, but long story short- 'The Wait' was killed, and restored to life as "Escape from the Dead", and that has pretty much taken up all my movie time. "Revenge" is something I should probably break into parts, and put on youtube for now. That is, until I get the chance to really do justice to it for a DVD.

That's interesting. I'm part of this independent film studio in the Silicon Valley and we shot a movie during the summer (which is being put on hold until we get more funding) and the lights we used for our night shots made it too light. I have to say...lighting is the biggest bitch. And don't get me started with lighting for green screens...holy shit.

Sweet, I'd be just as glad to watch this in YouTube. I used to have a copy that I burned to a blank CD way back from when this was first released, but I can't seem to find it...
Right now, just to give everyone some idea, I'm trying to raise money for "Escape from the Dead", I'm working through the shooting script, scouting locations, casting a few minor roles, working, I have 2 horses to take care of, sometimes I like to see my wife and kids :D, I'm organizing a fund-raising kegger and concert, scheduling rehearsals, keeping the web updated, and probably half a dozen things I've forgotten...
So, I'll get around to "Revenge" when *some* of that slows down. Hopefully, I can secure someone to get me a bunch of donations for funding. That will relieve a LOT of pressure from me for pre-production.
Josh, would you ever trust anyone to receive the raw footage to Revenge, cut it and score it? Or are you 100% finished with that?
Here's the main problem with that. There isn't any raw footage left. The machine storing ALL the footage crapped shortly after the movie was completed and put on line the first time. I have two copies of the completed movie, and that's that. I'm not really sure what more could be done with it- except for Platinum Dunes emailing me to tell me they want me to re-do it with a million dollar budget. :shy:
Perhaps you guys could start the campaign. In the mean time, here's what 3B has on tap for the next year, year and a half:
1. Escape from the Dead (Halloween 2009)
2. Jiggery Pokery (A comedy retrospective, family and friends only showing) Xmas 2009
3. Horrorthology- a creepshow style flick with five short segments
4. The Clown- cutbacks at an asylum spell trouble for some folks when the wrong guy is released.

Well, no longer needed on the concrete block room, as we terminated "Escape from the Dead" in favor of a new, Creepshow-style project called "Horrorthology". Much different project with a much better chance for being done right.

Ah, this is refreshing news to hear. I've been wanting to check this out again for quite a while. Have you thought about doing a follow up?
Well, funny you should ask that.
I hadn't been even considering it. I'm working right now on "Horrorthology", which is a creepshow-style movie, and after that, it's right to work on "Jiggery Pokery", a comedy retrospective of all the material a group of us shot from 1986-2000 (Which is being put together for a friends/family only showing), and then... well, we'll be off to work on any number of other movie projects.
But amidst those, I have been thinking about doing a follow up, which will be a sort of "Friday the 13th- The Revenge- Part 2" kind of thing. I hadn't been real keen on doing another fanfic, but I love making movies, and recently, I've kind of figured that if the guys making the "real" ones are going to continue to drive the series further into the ground, I might as well make my own, huh?
I would be more inclined (even with the blessing of the camp director) to do a more part 3/part 4 version, with some unsuspecting folks at a cabin or a house. But who knows, I mean... that camp kicks ass.
In order to get "Revenge" back to the internet, I'm wanting to hook up with someone who is MUCH better at cutting/producing trailers than I am. But you'll be happy to note that the movie has had the dust blown off it, and I've uploaded it for some face-lifting.
I will say that any "sequel" I would do for Revenge would continue to have a very human Jason in it (Can you tell I like parts 2, 3, 4 the best?), and I would stack it with hot babes again. This time, I would most definitely draw upon the many other talented people I have hooked up with on my zombie movie to pull off the makeup and FX, freeing me up to direct. Though, I have a tall task ahead of me, because at the end of "Revenge", Jason's head was cut off!.
So whaddya think, guys? Scabboy? Twolf? Spook? Anyone else? Sequel to "Revenge" in 2012?

Maybe you should do the Chris Higgins story that was rumoured to be F13 09? :p

Haven't heard of that one. She would be on a short list of characters I'd definitely be interested in bringing back.

I'll give you plenty of advance notice, sir! And besides, we'll need to bounce script ideas back and forth a lot before settling on one. I mean, we're not Swift/Shannon, so it'll be hard to craft something quickly. :shy:
I'd definitely be down for seeing a sequel. I say go for it. Would you end up using the same guy as Jason?
The short answer? No. Ed's damn near fifty and has pretty bad knees. Hell, he had bad knees when we did "Ravenge" 5 years ago! Ed's not really a Friday fan, or a horror movie fan for that matter, but did the movie for me as a favor, and he was a big guy, and I've made movies with him since 1986. We would probably go with a new Jason for this one, but I'd want another Jason very much like Ted White or Richard Brooker. Heck, Steve Dash, come to think of it.
But you can guarantee a running, human, early 80s style Jason.
I'll know more in a year or two when Scab and I get around to doing a script and a movie. It will certainly be another 90 minute + adventure, that's for sure.

Quick update- I'm putting the movie back into my computer right now to see what (if anything) needs to be done with it. I will also be uploading a bunch more photos on my facebook account tonight.
jb
ADDED:
Well all right- the irritation continues :D
As I discovered two nights ago, there is NO file of this movie on any of my computers, CDs, DVDs, etc. What I was left with was a SINGLE DVD of the movie, which I had to convert to an AVI to put it back in the computer to work on. But here began my problems, which- in hindsight- make me giggle. First of all, there is apparently no simple way to convert a DVD full of VOB and IFO files into an AVI. So I had to go review tons of different kinds of software to do this. Found one I liked, downloaded it, based on the user comments galore that it was "Easy as pie". Sure... that's why I had to read the entire help file and tutorials once I'd tried using it.
This thing then took from 1:17am until 8:02 am to convert the movie into an AVI.
Oh, then my automatic Windows update started, and prompted me to restart. If I chose to restart later, that was like, five minutes. This led to me having to babysit the thing all the way, because Windows automatic update won't go away, and if you don't choose an option, it will restart your machine for you. Crap.
But- it did process, and make an AVI for me. A HUGE AVI, which freezes Adobe Premiere every time I try to import it. So, I have to put the movie in an editor that won't freeze, and break the movie into chunks that will be manageable for the flighty Premiere.
Then, finally... I can do some work on the thing. It's going to look a lot better when I'm done with it. No new footage.
jb
Hehe I had to do this with one of my cameras, best to use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD, then Flask to convert it to Huffy or another codec Adobe doesn't completely hate :p Was a very tiring process for me too with a lot of trial and error.

Just finished Ed's interviews for the Behind-the-scenes featurette for the DVD coming this fall. There are several more scheduled for next week, including my own! The outtakes keep getting more and more funny. I may post a couple up on Youtube, or maybe a short cut-together of a few.

Well, today has been interesting...
I'm recoding the movie from the only source I have (A DVD of it :O ) and getting ready with my list of notes for what to nip, and what to tuck. That's going pretty well, and I think it's going to help the movie out a lot for its re-release and DVD burning. More good news, we'll be able to lightscribe these DVDs this fall, so that will be an option for those of you who would want that.
The BTS stuff is going well- I now have Nicole, Nate, Karolina, Liz, and Alex coming in for some interviews for the featurette. TONS of pictures and outtakes for the discs.
In other news, I already have this, well... I guess I would call it a dearth of actors and actresses asking to take part in any possible sequel I would do. How's that for the power of the fanfic? I think it was good press from my cast and crew, and everyone knows Jason, so if they get a shot to get killed by him, etc. it's pretty fun, eh? I'm thinking 2011 for a possible production. No word yet on a possible Jason, either. I want a guy (you know me :D ) who will play the role like Ted White or Richard Brooker.
Now then... have to go drop some CGI banthas into "Revenge"

Josh, I'm glad your gonna get The Revenge back up. I said it before and I'll say it again: It's amazing that a tiny, low budget fan film is actually better than the last few "professional" Jason flicks we've gotten.
Excellent job, and I'd love to see you do a sequel.
Josh1971
04-11-2009, 07:41 AM
Thanks for the kind words, Penhall! It was always the plan to put Revenge back on the net somewhere, and do a DVD of it, but that accursed zombie movie stole 4 years of my life, and so now I'm getting the chance to work on other stuff.
There's obviously, as a movie maker (especially now with way more experience) that I would have done differently and better. I really appreciate the comment that it's better than the last few series entries- that means a lot.
It's kind of the way I've come to view fan fiction- if the "real guys" aren't going to make ones I like, I'll just make my own!
And the sequel is in the works- I already have several ideas written down.

Revenge was good, and I have always wanted a DVD of it. The only problem was the pixelated picture of the file I put onto DVD and technically, a few scenes the editing was choppy-- it could have been the file compression, I have noticed when I turn an AVI from my camera to a WMV sometimes edited marks flash black.

Well, you'll be thrilled to know that the DVD, and probably the internet release will NOT be WMV files this time. The pixelated image really bothered me, as I didn't think people would be actually getting to see the movie as we shot it. It's still not perfect with a more clear picture, as we were not real well versed in night lighting at the time, but it's WAY better than the WMV files that were on the net last time.
I don't think some of the choppiness you were seeing was file compression- it was likely me. :D That's some of the tweaking going on right now with it, now that I have several more years of editing experience under my belt. I'm just fixing certain things to make the movie more smooth. Some things probably won't be able to be fixed, but others will, and hopefully that's going to make the entire flick a lot better.
And this week, it's back to work on the new project, as well as interviews for "Revenge" BTS stuff.
But today, alas, is all about my doggie. She is old, and took a tumble down the stairs the other night, breaking one of her femurs. She's had the surgery and is coming home today, so I've got lots to do there.
Thanks for the kind words, Scab!

As if I didn't have enough to do...
The script for what's being called "Friday the 13th- The Revenge- Part2" (For now), is underway! Packs a couple surprises, but for the most part, I think fans of the original four will be incredibly happy! I'm trying to keep any 'soap opera' type stuff out of it, and just make it a very part 2, 3, or 4 type of entry. It will pick up in real time at the end of "Revenge", and just about all I'll reveal at the moment is that there will be a massive manhunt for Jason, who will be flushed out of Wessex County, and in the place he ends up, he finds himself amidst some homes. Someone's parents are going out of town, and a quiet, old priest has rented one of them.

Oh, I forgot about her-- she was the "prophet of doom" in the film!
Ok, here's a geeky thing... In these fan film/low budget movies I really like "on location" scenes, like a scene in a store, cafe, etc. It adds a lot of professionalism to it. I think the scene at the store in the beginning really added that to the film. Generally with these fan films everything takes place in ONE place-- the woods.
Other than the short"Return To Camp Blood" by Gary Mongar, I think your film was the only one to take place at a summer camp. Legends was at a resort cabin type, but not a camp. That too adds a lot of atmosphere.

Thanks. You get to learn a lot of these little details in the behind the scenes stuff, and taking a cue from "His Name was Jason", there's a BTS featurette, and likely an extended "Director Segment", with me. There's a lot of background on making the movie, locations, etc. I tried to put as much professional-looking stuff into it as I could- I mean, we had an ambulance, cop cars, a number of sets, it was madness!
When we did my interview segments for the BTS stuff, I spoke a lot about some other fan films, and how my take on them has changed in the few years after "Revenge".
Other than the short"Return To Camp Blood" by Gary Mongar, I think your film was the only one to take place at a summer camp. Legends was at a resort cabin type, but not a camp. That too adds a lot of atmosphere.
I don't know if I've seen "Return to Camp Blood". Have to look that one up.
And hey, everyone, contest time!

Call it Retribution, which is comes from the Latin word Retribuere, meaning PAY BACK!
Noted- I've started the list. :)
Some other news and notes (But still not willing to start the movie its own thread yet):
There will be one character we've seen before from the original series.
There will also be a character we've heard a lot about, but haven't ever seen (So see if you can unravel this complicated riddle ;) )
It will be set in a different county, at a different lake.
I have begun doing a wee little bit of casting- the only name attached so far is Kelli Jo Sweeney, who is loosely attached for the moment.
Speaking of casting, I've also begun casting for the role of Mrs. Voorhees (Young and old).
I expect this movie to run 95-100 minutes, based on the treatment I did for the story.
And.................
It may lead to a third fanfic set back at the camp, after my discussion with the camp director.
Cheers.

Sounds great! Hmm, as for titles, here are my donations:
Resurgence
Bloodlust
Bloodbath
Bloodshed
The Frightening
The Slaughtering
The Butchering
The Madness
The Fury
The Rage
Onslaught
Wrath
Heh, I was just trying to think of things that sounded cool coming after "Friday the 13th:" I wouldn't be insulted if you decided to pass on these ;). I'm not good at deciding on titles unless I'm the one writing the story and I know what is in it.
So do you have an idea on how you want Jason to be played? I know you mentioned this will be similar to parts 2-4, but do you have a specific image for him? Which one of the Jasons will yours be closest to?
Josh1971
04-20-2009, 09:32 PM
Thanks for the suggestions! They will be added in for consideration, for sure.
As far as how Jason is to be played, there's a certain amount of flexibility in that based upon the actor I'll eventually cast, but if I had a preference, I make it no secret that my favorite Jason was Ted White, and that's my idea Jason. Once I get a Jason actor, I'll pick through some various costume ideas, and we'll get started on the makeup/hock configuration as well. But again, a lot of this is at least a year off. For now, I'm going to be working on the existing movie, as well as some original movies through this summer and fall.

Production continued tonight for "Friday the 13th- The Odyssey", which will be a cast n' crew behind-the-scenes featurette on the DVD for Revenge. Got a great interview tonight with Alex Solodov, who played Roger in the movie. Tomorrow night, we continue with my reflections on the project, and then Friday is the next scheduled interview, with Nicole Schafer, who played Jackie in the movie.
I have to balance the work on this with the pre-production for "Horrorthology", as well as half a dozen other things.
But May will bring us interviews with Amy Coop (Mrs. Burnside), Karolina (Heather), Nate (Ethan), and David Peterson (Officer Stone). June will see Ed and I, and perhaps another cast member or two, recording a commentary track for the movie.
LOTS going on with Revenge.

It will be back on the internet in the fall. I'm cleaning it up and doing some tweaking to it right now, as well as assembling a shitload of extras (Outtakes, stills, camp map, a featurette called "Friday the 13th- the odyssey", and more!)
Now then, back to work on it.

Today was a really rough one.
Saturday, a great guy, good friend, and 3B Entertainment's web designer passed away doing what he loved. He was playing hockey, and came off the ice short of breath. A few minutes later he gasped a couple times, and then collapsed. He was never revived. He was 30, with no history of heart trouble.
3B's website was a newly pioneered thing for him, as it was his first web design which incorporated a lot of user-editing functions to make updating the site much easier. Just a few days before his death, we had finalized a lot of the last few bits and things to get started adding content. Now, it strikes me as particularly sad that Gabe won't get to see the site launch with all the content.
A dark day for 3B, and for all of us personally. My wife and his have been best friends for about 25 years, and she is the one we're focusing our thoughts and prayers on for now.
Thanks for reading,
Josh
