View Full Version : the Shooting Thread
This thread is to talk about hunting, shooting and all of those awesome things.
I am considering buying a rifle or a shotgun, any suggestions?

For what purpose? How familiar are you with guns? For just plinking cans, you can't go wrong with a semi-automatic .22, because the recoil is non-existent and ammo is super cheap. For longer-range target shooting, probably a lever-action .30-30 or one of the choices in .223.
For shooting clays, a nice entry-level shotgun is the Mossberg 500, available anywhere. It serves a nice dual purpose of being a great pump-action home protection shotgun. If you get really serious about clays, you can look at the more expensive over/under shotguns for that, but I wouldn't blow the money on one right out of the gate.
I'd class myself as moderately familiar with guns. Haven't fired one in about 10 years. It's something I am looking to get back into.

Girlfriend and I are coordinating with my dad to have a date at the rifle range to get her acclimated with guns.
I'm all about shooting the odd soda can in a remote area (my grandparents live in the woods).
I'm not much on hunting (I'll eat it I just don't want to kill it :p ) but I know a few hunters and they get hardcore about that stuff.
Tried to go deer huntin once. Just couldn't pull the trigger. Can't bring myself to kill an animal that's not attacking me first.
Shooting at the range is alot of fun tho. And everyone should own a gun for protection.

I could never tell the difference between the AR-15 & the M-16. :(
I like rifles personally. I can't remember if I used a .270 or .308 to kill my first deer; own a .300 Winchester. They're all high-powered and kill deer/elk/antelope no problem.
If you expect China to invade, though, you'll want an Assault Rifle. The M-16 has very little recoil and you'll love the way it feels. It's light, easy to clean, and you should be able to shoot 3-round bursts (I guess it depends on where you live).
I thought you Canadians weren't allowed to have guns...???
