Randy Couture To Star In Prequel To "The Scorpion King"
(Credit: BodogBeat.com)
UFC heavyweight champion Randy "The Natural" Couture (15-8-0) will star in "The Scorpion King: The Akkadian," a major motion picture from Universal Studios.
The film will be a prequel to the 2002 film "The Scorpion King", which featured Dwayne Johnson - better known as "The Rock". Ironically, this film was a prequel to the films "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns", which hit theatres in 1999 and 2001 respectively.
"It's my first lead in a feature film," Couture said. "I'm playing the Rock's nemesis, but it's a teenage Rock in this movie. It's a prequel to the others, and I'm the bad warrior king. I leave Oct. 3 for South Africa to begin shooting."

Has Randy not learned from watching past wrestlers jumps to the big screen?
Hulk Hogan - All his movies sucked
Roddy Piper - All his movies except for They Live (That's a classic) sucked
The Rock - All his movies sucked
John Cena - The Marine was ok but definitely not Oscar material
Kane - See No Evil was a ok slasher but also not Oscar material
Steve Austin - Can't comment on The Condemed because I have yet to see it. But it did bomb at the box office.

Umm he's not a wrestler. He's an actual fighter:

I know who he is, I watch UFC. I was just stating what has happened to past professional wrestlers in the past when they tried to make the jump to movies. (I know wrestling is fake but their still considered professionals)
I guess they would have had to pay The Rock too much money to return so they have to make the SK 14 years old. This is just another movie on the miles long list of movies I will never waste my time on.

I'm thinking the same thing, I don't think I'm interested in seeing this movie at the moment.

The Rock has launched a massively successful career. The man keeps popping up in films -- I just saw a poster for a new film he's doing which appears to be massively family friendly -- so there's no reason this UFC fighter can't do the same.
As for the film itself... well, fuck that, man. I would consider watching a sequel with the Rock in, but not this.

Yeah I think I seen that poster too Jeans. I think The Rock plays a quarterback who finds out he has a daughter, damn I can't remember the name of it.

I'm not really interested in this now. If anything I would be somewhat interested in another Mummy film.

Let's be fair here -- no mindless action film and no slasher film has ever been Oscar material. They just don't give either genre that kind of attention.

I'd like to see this. I like movies that have Egyptian settings the way The Mummy and Scorpion King has.

I'd be interested in this if it wasn't the prequel to the prequel of a sequel of a remake.

Filming has begun for this DTV Disasterpiece:D
The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian Starts Filming
Source: Universal Studios Home Entertainment October 18, 2007
The newest entry in Universal's DVD Originals offerings, The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian, commenced principal photography in Capetown, South Africa on October 1, 2007. Universal Studios Home Entertainment Family Productions is co-producing with Film Afrika and ApolloMovie. Universal Studios Home Entertainment is distributing the all-new epic adventure, which expands the line's presence into the live-action adventure arena for the first time. The film is slated for release on DVD in 2008.
The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian is the thrilling prequel to The Scorpion King, the action blockbuster that starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Mathayus, the fearsome warrior king of an ancient desert empire. The new film, a heroic tale of loyalty and betrayal filled with heart-stopping action and thrilling visual effects, tells the story of how the young Mathayus rose to become the Scorpion King. Shot entirely in South Africa, this entertaining blend of myth, magic and muscle is directed by Russell Mulcahy (Resident Evil: Extinction, Highlander) and stars Michael Copon (pictured, "Beyond the Break," Bring It On: In It to Win It) as the young hero Mathayus, Simon Quarterman ("Murder Rooms: The Patient's Eyes") as the wily Ari, Karen David (The Colour of Magic) as the beautiful Layla, Ralf Moeller (Pathfinder) as the fierce warrior Pollux, and current six-time Ultimate Fighting Championship king Randy Couture (Invincible), holder of three heavyweight and three light heavyweight titles, as the charismatic and powerful villain Sargon.
"'The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian' is by far our most ambitious DVD Originals production ever in terms of the scope and quality of the sets, visual effects, fight sequences and stunt work," said Glenn Ross, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Universal Studios Home Entertainment Family Productions. "Because of the remarkable success of the DVD Originals product line, we are committed to producing a diverse slate of films based on proven franchises to help satisfy the growing demand for high quality entertainment on DVD."
The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian is written by Randall McCormick (Speed 2, Titan A.E.). David Wicht, Thomas Becker and Jörg Westerkamp are co-producers and Sean Daniels and Jim Jacks (both of The Mummy and The Scorpion King) are the executive producers. The film's production team includes director of photography Glynn Speekaert, production designer Tom Hannam, editor John Gilbert and costume designer Diana Cilliers.
The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian tells the story of the teenage warrior Mathayus and his quest for justice and honor against the evil and powerful King Sargon.

I'll watch it on TV. I just watched Scorpion King early this week on TV. I liked it. Conan-like. It had been a long time since the last time I saw a Conan-like movie.
This one will be directed by Russell Mulcahy. It should be interesting enough for my taste.

As much as I admire Randy Couture, I just know his acting ability (or lack of, if you will) is going to make me cry.
