I love the Candyman mythology and Tony Todd is great as Candyman.
Candyman 1 is awesome.
Candyman 2 is really good.
Candyman 3 is a piece of shit.
I read last year that Clive Barker was wanting to do another......it would be set at a secluded girls school in the winter time. But haven't heard anymore.
Sounds like it would be awesome. They need another movie like that to get it back to the feel of part 1 & 2.
BTW, the Candyman soundtracks to Part 1 & 2 are SWEET! I love Philip Glass' scores.

The first is brilliant, an utterly perfect stand alone film.
The second one is a good film, it's fun but it changes the nature of the candyman, amking him more a typical ghosts rather than the personification of an urban legend.
Still, it's decent but the first, for me, stands alone and when watching it I watch it purely as it's own film and not in context of part 2. The firts only really works properly thematically if you ignore the revelations of Part 2.
Part 3 shall not be mentioned beyond this comment.

I like all three of them. These are damn good horror films.

I loved the first movie. It was a great idea that left a lot up in the air and the audience could interpret the film a few different ways. The music was excellent and the mood was too.
The second movie I thought was a good Sequel, just as far as doing another Candyman film. I thought it had a lot of style, but wasn't as innovative as the first. It explained how Candyman became Candyman, which depending on the viewer was either cool or blasphemy. Still, it was an interesting film.
The third film sucked IMO. I just didn't like that one.
I keep hearing this idea for Candyman 4 that Tony Todd keeps talking about. I don't know if it will ever get made or not, but it sounds to me like a major improvement over Day of the Dead IMO.

Thing is Part 2 didn't explain anything, it invented a whole enw backstory that changed the version seen in Part 1.
Candyman (part 1 version) is an Urban Legend. He doens't exist in any other form, he's the whispers in the classroom, that is what he IS. "Candyman" only manifests at all because Helen threatens him. By 'exposing' the story she threatens the legend and thus it/he will die... so then the candyman becomes personified in order to make the stories continue.
Part 2, I DO like, but it makes Candyman more an ordinary vengeful ghost.
Part 3 is the worst where Candyman is further reduced by killing a cult of candyman worshippers, in the original films version, the veyr people who'd keep his existance continuing.

Yep, he was only an urban legend in the Original. He tells Helen as much when he says "I am rumor. It is a blessed condition, believe me. To be whispered about at street corners, to live in other people's dreams. But, not to have to be. Do you understand?" That's the greatest thing about that film IMO; Helen creates the Candyman in the original film like you said.
The second movie made him a literal monster that existed inside the mirror I think. That was the context I was referring to when I mentioned revealing his origin. The whole subplot of Caroline's original mirror holding his soul and power.
To me, that was like the Candyman version of the Dream Demons, Thorn Curse, or the HellBaby. No need to go there so early I didn't think, or at all. I didn't really care for it, but the style of the film saved it for me. I try to look at them as two different films also. Bill Condon basically said the same thing on his commentary for Farewell To The Flesh.
I try not to even consider the third film much of anything. That girl from Baywatch, I have forgotten her name, as the lead of the film didn't work IMO. As a film itself, I felt it tried too hard to replicate the events of the second movie. With the Mardi Gras being replaced by the Day of the Dead festival and having the angry Cop with an agenda. I wish it would have picked up fresh like the second one did. Continuing the storyline of him wanting his remaining bloodline, gave it even more of a cheap clone feel to me.
The scene of Annie with her throat slashed walking toward Caroline in the bathroom with her arms spread was probably its best moment for me.
It had a few scenes of good gore, but for me gore alone can't save a film. Especially, since the first two Candyman films had quality, and the third IMO didn't have much.

Candyman 3 is a piece of shit.
Agreed.
Candyman is one of my favorite films.
I wish part 3 didn't exist.

Candyman 2 does certainly have a good atmosphere and really, rather than a sequel, it DOES work best as its own stand alone film.

I like the sequel, but I try not to compare it to the first film.
Compared to the first it feels generic, but on its own it is rather good.
The third films is terrible.

I saw it on the big screen, and I really tried to give it a chance... but I hated it. Some scenes kept me awake, but I was disappointed with the film as a whole. Maybe I'll rent it again and take a fresh look at it.

Some scenes were shot so good. I really have to give it to Anthony Richmond for that. The story itself was also good, but there was a lot of slow points. Same with the sequels.

I really like the original. It's been a long time since i've seen 2 and 3, though.
Tony Todd did an awesome job as the Candyman. I can't think of anyone else who could have played that role as well as he did.

I could see Lavar Burton as candyman, heh.
Anyways that's a joke. When Tony had a forum on GaG (he may still) he once said that playing Candyman was a blessing and a curse all in one that he was done. He said that is a sequel is ever made they are going to use another Candyman and he said that it will be someone like 50 cent (I shit you not).

If they do ever make a sequel, I wonder if they'll set it in Cabrini Green again. I've actually been past there before. My brother used to go to culinary school, and it was really close. We were unfamiliar with that particular area, and accidentally ended up turning on there. Not a pretty site.....I actually remember seeing someone walking around with a gun.
scab - Haha, Lavar as Candyman. That'd be something.

I think if they had to replace Tony, which according to what he has said they will, they need someone with a sad and gentle face. Tony had that and that will be hard to find. Some people that I think have that is Brian-Duncan Clark (but he's like 6'8 375lbs). That'd be one big Candyman!

I am incredibly excited to meet Tony Todd at Monster Mania. I heard he is incredibly kind to his fans. He has one of those voices like Lance's, in that I just melt when I hear it. Just as Doug Bradley is Pinhead, Tony is Candyman. I also have enjoyed him as Ben in Savini's NotLD remake and in the Final Destinations films.

I hope they don't replace Tony for the next Candyman film.
He seemed excited about the prospect of being in a fourth film when he was discussing its potential storyline on the Candyman Special Edition DVD from 2005. It wouldn't be the same without him IMO.

Hopefully he hasn't changed his mind since then. Like I said, in his forum he said the opposite. Maybe he was upset at the time, or maybe something happened that made him change his mind.

Candyman is an odd one really... he's become more iconic than his films. It was never a big hitter and never really struck as franchise stuff, it only have two cinema outings for one thing. Yet the name and character live on, mainly due to Tony Todd's incredible performane that made the character unforgettable.

I just saw Farewell to the Flesh. I liked it.
I don't think I'm going to bother with Day of the Dead after what I heard about it.

I rewatched the original Candyman the other day and I really dig how you can interpret the film. You can view as if Candyman is real, or view it as Helen simply going crazy and Candyman is all made up in her head. Seeing it from the aspect of Helen going crazy gave me a new perspective on the film.
As for the other films, I remember liking part 2, but it's been years since I watched it. Part 3 was.... ok, but they should have had another actress. That baywatch girl was HORRIBLE.

I agree. I think with a better actress, the film might have been a little better.

Yea Candyman 3 was a piece of shit. None of the original music from Candyman 1 or 2 was in it. That alone made it shitty....not to mention the bitch CANNOT act.
Man I wish Clive Barker and Bernhard Rose would make Candyman 4. I haven't heard anything about it in a couple years though so I assume that idea is dead.

The original is a classic and Part 2 was really good as well. I haven't seen Part 3 but I've heard nothing but bad things about it.
I love the first and second one, but three is really....I don't know. Tony Todd rules.

I had actually forgotten about the music being absent from Candyman 3, since I haven't seen it in a while. But, that was something else that I strongly disliked about the third film.
Phillip Glass's music was an essential part of the first two films; especially the original IMO. It really helped set the tone of that film.

I love the score in the original film. So creepy and it sets the mood really well.
Sometimes i think we share a brain Jiggy...I LOVED the score for this movie. It had that innocent/sinister feel to it

What gets really silly is the idea that just sayign "candyman" five times in a mirror will summon up this ghost. If that were true teens and the like would be dropping like flies EVERYWHERE. I just don't like how the central urban legend ideology is dropped in favour of a conventional ghost story that's just awful by the third.
- Scarecrow
At the risk of sounding like a wuss, I will never say candyman or bloody mary 5 times into the mirror.

The first one is good and really creepy, but seems to run out of ideas towards the end. It has a nice flow for the first hour or so, but then the movie gets sloppy, imo.
Even though it's not quite as good as it could've been, I will say it's probably the last truly creepy mainstream horror movie.
