Here is the thread for everything Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History Of Friday The 13th (http://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Lake-Memories-Complete-History/dp/0976543311) related, the book by Peter Bracke.

I unfortunately have not had the (I think?) pleasure of reading this book, but I've come so close to buying it. I swear, one of these days I'm going to sit down and read this... it looks fantastic.

This is a wonderful book. Other than a few typos here and there, it's darn near perfect.

It's truly THE most comprehensive book on the Friday series. Interviews, rare photos, interesting backstories, and just all around superb writing about each film one by one make the book one of the most reliable sources to anyone interested in the series. Peter Bracke is pretty much the undisputed man for writing this thing. When I got mine for my birthday last year, my fucking head nearly exploded. It really is uber-long, but after you finish each section in the book, you find yourself looking at each film in a totally different way. Before I read the JTM section, I hated the movie with a burning passion. When I finished the section, I had developed a sense of respect for it. That's just how good this book is.

This book is awesome! It is basically a huge collection of interviews from cast and crew members of every film.

David Grove's Legend of Camp Blood is a good book too, it is basically a smaller version of this. I have and love both.

Spectacular book. Each section is a 10/10 from me.

The Judie Aronson-Ted White-Joe Zito water fight was one of my favorites. :)

I love this book. :D

I was honestly expecting just another "Making of" book that would tell me basically what I already knew. But, I actually learned a few things from it and the interviews were great. Very well put together. I couldn't put it down either.

I read most of the chapters two or three times.

There were a couple of books for Nightmare On Elm Street.

The Nightmare On Elm Street Companion (1987)
The Nightmare Never Ends (1992)

Don't have either of those two. Are they any good or are they acceptional?

I think we'll see Halloween get a making of book eventually. Maybe sometime in the next couple years. But as for Friday the 13th books, Crystal Lake Memories was beyond my expectations, and Making Friday the 13th - The Legend of Camp Blood was a great companion for it. Even though CLM came out afterwards.:)

I have The Nightmare Never Ends. I wish someone would make a more up to date Nightmare book that includes Wes Craven's New Nightmare and Freddy vs. Jason. Well I don't care about FVJ because that was covered in both Friday books, but I would love a Nightmare one to include New Nightmare. A Halloween one would be nice too.

I basically skimmed through 6-FvJ because my lack of intierest in those films. 1-5 was def the best parts of the book.

Joshg
10-29-2007, 11:27 PM
I don't know. This was, form what I can remember, my ranking of the parts of the book:

#1 - Part IV
#2 - Part V
#3 - Part 3
#4 - Part VIII
#5 - Part 2
#6 - Part VII
#7 - Part IX
#8 - Part 1
#9 - Jason X
#10 - FvJ
#11 - Part VI

I didn't feel there was enough info on Part VI to satisfy, but it was still 10/10!
#8, #9, and #10 spots vary for me. Part 1 is my favorite film, but the section slowed me down due to me hearing much of the stuff already mentioned before.

Parts 4 and 5 were my ultimate favorite entries in the book. Loved 'em! The Anderson frozen swimming part sold it for me!

Yea I will definately read all of the Paramount 'Friday' years, but seriously doubt I will read anything...in depth...past JTM. I like the NLC films ok, but I always have been and always will be extremely partial to the 1980-1989 series of movies. After Paramount sold the rights, the NLC films definately lost something major that make the 80's films so enduring.

I thought the least interesting movies had the most interesting chapters. While I don't much like the movies, Friday the 13th Part VIII and Jason X were two of my favorite chapters in the book. It shows how different they were from the original idea and also shows just how brutal an industry it is.

I liked both CLM and The Making Of F13, but CLM is definitely the superior of the two by far. More detailed and in-depth, and equally long sections for every film in the series. The author is unbiased too, which is a big plus for me.

You know, I was just reading the chapter on Part 4. Joe Zito really studied the movies and really put so much thought and effort into his Friday. It is too bad directors like Ronny Yu were not as dedicated to their work as Zito. I have a new respect for Joe as a film maker after reading everything he had to say about the making of Friday 4.

I wish that the book hadn't been so dominated by interviews/quotes, but there's no denying what a comprehensive and revealing volume it is. And there is an extra benefit to having things recounted in the voices of those who were there. It is THE Friday the 13th retrospective.

Rich
03-31-2008, 05:46 PM
I like how it is interviews and quote. You are hearing it straight from the people who did it not from a third party. That combined with the pictures makes it like a Friday the 13th scrapbook in coffee table book form. If you don't like the interview domination there is always the David Grove book, which is a great little book as well.

A trend I started to notice with the Final chapter actors was that most of them didn't like horror movies, nor did they want to be in the movie that much. It just confirmed my beliefs about actors being complete snobs lol. Little did they know they were in one of the best slasher movies of all time

A couple reviews on Amazon, talk about how this book is mostly just the same old stuff repeated from the DVD extras. Huh? At least 70% of the quotes in this book are from actors/film crew saying things I'd never heard of. I know some of the quotes are from Fangoria magazines. I only counted a few quotes that were ripped directly from the DVD extras.

Hrm... See, from what I take of it, Peter Bracke put this book together before the release of the DVD set. He makes mention that he is the Author during the commentary for movie 3.

This is indeed a great book. I've had it for a few years now and I've read through it maybe 1 time... but the thing that still gets to me is seeing all the information and everything well within the pages.

Makes me wish they would find that reel of Chris getting killed in part 3 so we could have a proper ending to the movie.

This is a very good book. Picked mine up at Barnes & Noble, but I had to order it at the desk.

Really what's not to love? Even the most boring chapter is still insanely fascinating, so overall I'd advise any Friday the 13th fan to check it out.

Highlights for me include Adriennne King's reccolections on filming part 2, Betsy Palmer's memories, the Joe Zito controversy (which kept going on), learning about Warrington Gillette, the one Make Up FX artist's take on how they did Jason in JTM, the list goes on.

Probably the biggest shock, for me, was reading Kimberly Beck's statements. Doing a Friday the 13th is slightly better than doing a porno? Okay. Also it seems there was some actual on-set sparring between Lar Park Lincoln and Kevin Blair, but that is pretty quickly swept over. The two seeminly hate each other...(which really makes that photo of the two of them in the back all the more hilarious when you really think about it...those smiles were probably very fake. hehe) and I thought it was cute when Kevin said he came up with a part 8 script where Tina died off. :p

Overall, if you don't own the book...you probably should.

Six years after the original publication of Crystal Lake Memories, Jason is ready to slash his way across your screen. Inspired by the extraordinary response to the print edition, Bracke has returned to the vaults to unearth additional material he was unable to incorporate into the original hardcover volume. He has also conducted fresh and updated interviews with key Friday the 13th alumni, including many who have agreed to break their silence for the first time. Bigger and bloodier than ever, Crystal Lake Memories is fully revised and expanded, and, says the author, the most complete and comprehensive version possible.

“Over the past six years since the original release of Crystal Lake Memories, it’s been a joy to hear from so many fans of the series around the world with their appreciation for the book and the series it celebrates,” says Bracke. “Though the hardcover version remains available and stands as a complete and cohesive work, there were many fascinating and intriguing stories that fell victim to Jason’s merciless editorial blade— even a large-format book comes with size limitations. So it’s been a great pleasure to not only revisit the original content but also present it in a modern way.”

Crystal Lake Memories will receive a simultaneous release in both Standard and Enhanced electronic editions, and each will be made available at a new affordable low price. This makes Bracke’s compelling narrative accessible to a whole new community of Friday enthusiasts. “The book market has seen radical changes over the past few years with electronic books now a viable and increasingly popular format for many readers. The consumer has spoken, and they want to take their favorite books with them wherever they go, whether it’s on their laptop, tablet or smartphone—something that wasn’t possible with a five-pound hardcover edition!” laughs Bracke, adding, “It’s particularly gratifying that, in these tough economic times, the book is now more affordable than was ever possible in print.”

I won't buy multiple copies of a movies, not sure I'll shell out for this.
However, since it'll be an e-book as will, makes me think about it a little harder.
I guess it depends on how much additional material is in it.

I just posted my Interview with Peter Bracke pertaining to the eBook. He goes into why he started the original book back in 2002 (Old info for some) and what brought him to complete his vision now for 2012. He also explains what info will be included in the book and I found out there will be a very small delay in the release date.

Check out the interview:

It's a great read and you should get most of your questions answered. Enjoy!

Great stuff, I really am seriously considering buying it given how much additional material there seems to be, another 100,000 plus words.

Only thing I'm disappointed in is that this quote:
But overall, I feel this is the complete version, from Friday the 13th through Freddy vs. Jason. A book that has a real arc with a beginning, middle and an end. I really feel it says all I have to say on the subject.
leads me to believe there won't be a chapter on the remake.
He mentions earlier that he assumed there would be a remake, but he figured it was years away.
This quote though, suggests to me that there won't be a chapter on it.
Or am I mistaken?

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Sparkplug Press, a premiere publisher of high-quality, non-fiction books on the horror genre, today announces the February 28, 2012 release of first-ever eBook editions of Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th, the definitive tome on the making of the most successful horror franchise in cinema history.

Upon its original release as a collectible hardcover edition in October 2005, Crystal Lake Memories was instantly hailed as one of the most lavish, comprehensive and meticulously researched books ever created about a film series. The culmination of more than three years of tireless research, author Peter M. Bracke exhaustively conducted over 200 interviews with the cast and crew responsible for each of the 11 now-classic films in original Friday the 13th franchise, from filmmaker Sean S. Cunningham’s seminal 1980 shocker through the 2003 blockbuster match-up Freddy vs. Jason. Alongside a narrative as full of shocks and surprises as the films themselves, Crystal Lake Memories also featured nearly six-hundred rare and never-before-seen images that paint a graphically compelling picture of one of horror’s best-loved titles.

Now, six years after the original publication of Crystal Lake Memories, Jason is ready to slash his way across your screen.

“Though the hardcover version remains available and stands as a complete and cohesive work, there were many fascinating and intriguing stories that fell victim to Jason’s merciless editorial blade—even a large-format book comes with size limitations.

Consumers who opt for the Standard Electronic Edition will enjoy the fully revised and expanded text, including all newly-added cast and crew interviews, an updated introduction and appendices, and a Foreword by series creator Sean S. Cunningham. The Enhanced Edition (available for Apple iBooks 2, Kindle Fire and Nook Color platforms only) expands upon the text content, adding hundreds of images—many never seen before—including stills, storyboards, concept art and publicity and marketing materials. The iBooks 2 release also includes additional interactive image elements and bonus video interviews with Friday the 13th cast and crew. Utilizing the cutting-edge technology of today’s best ebook readers, the Enhanced Edition of Crystal Lake Memories gives consumers the most comprehensive and interactive eBook experience available today.

The Friday the 13th Phenomenon

Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Friday the 13th film franchise has proven to be as unstoppable at the box office as its machete-wielding villain. Chronicling the murderous exploits of Jason Voorhees, the iconic, hockey-masked serial killer, Friday the
13th has become a true multimedia juggernaut: the series has spawned eleven installments of the “classic franchise” plus a recent 2009 remake that topped the worldwide box office, a hit syndicated television drama, a collection of popular young adult fiction novels, a smash video game, nearly a dozen top-selling DVDs, and an extensive line of licensed collectibles including magazines, posters, comic books, model kits and even a lunchbox. Revenue figures are as staggering as they are relentless: over 95 million tickets sold and nearly $600 million in domestic box office receipts alone(1), seven million DVDs shipped(2) and over one hundred licensed products that have grossed over $150 million in sales(3). And the Michael Bay-produced reboot of the franchise, 2009’s Friday the 13th, made cinema history with a domestic gross of $40.6 million in its first three days, setting an opening weekend record for a horror remake.
