So a few people have posted what they've been up to, I figured I'd give it a go.
I'll start with my avatars:
Current one was made from stock photos, 8 in total. I'm no keen on the wings, but this was one of my first edits :)

I took a phoo of my nephew peeking out from his plastic inflatable maze thing, painted over using his face as a guide, and then built up the rust textures before applying some shading:

This one is another photo I took, with about 15-20 layers of texture and colour added, with some mild detail painted in on the face:

This is my neice wearing a plastic kids mask. Using the mask as a guide I painted over it and applied a few textures, before cleaning up with a couple of custom-brushes and converting to black and white:

This last one is a sketch I did and then scanned. It was inked and painted in photoshop. I can't draw for shit so I was quite proud:
