View Full Version : Favorite gaming genre?

Hard to believe we don't have this thread already, but here it is now! Pretty simple: what's your favorite genre of gaming? Those of you who are bigger gaming nerds than I feel free to let me know if I left any out, but I think I got most of them.
Also, a note about RPGs: for this poll, I guess I'm defining them as the Final Fantasy type games. I've talked to Brett H. about this a lot lately, and it's become abundantly clear that neither of us knows what the hell an RPG truly is. :X
Also, "adventure" seems like a wide genre, but here it includes games like Zelda or Fable. I've seen those referred to as both RPGs and Adventure games in the past, but I like the use of Adventure because Zelda isn't exactly the same type of game as Final Fantasy.

Put "Stealth Games' up there and I'll vote for it.

Nevermind, found it. Wow, I'm fucking observant!

Haha, I got to the end of my list and thought "fuck, I gotta throw stealth on there because I'm pretty sure Nate will vote for that one."
Incidentally, I like stealth games a lot, but for some reason, I hate it when more action-oriented games throw in an obligatory stealth mission just for the hell of it.

As do I. Stealth games have it as a focused mechanic and put a lot of time and effort into it. When an action game tosses in a stealth segment, it's rarely well done and almost always feels stapled on at best.

Sports for me
Survival horror being a close, close second.

Sports games to me are odd. I can't help but think, "If you want to play football so bad, grab a ball and get some friends together."
But I know it isn't that simple. It's just the first place my brain goes.

Very true....I like playing outdoor sports too though. It's pretty weird...I guess I choose sports because I think it has the most life of a game (meaning...once I beat an adventure game or some type, and it doesnt usually take too long, I'll pretty much never play it again [unless it's REALLY fun or theres different ways it can be played through]). But then, ironically, that same sports game pretty much becomes obsolete to me once the one for the new year comes out.
I think sports games are the most fun to play head to head too.
If it means anything, I may be switching. I picked up alot of old games for my ps2 (like Ghost Recon, Evil Dead Fistful of Boomstick and some others) and have been playing them and I've just started Alone in the Dark and restarted Super Mario Bros and Ghostbusters on the Wii, and I've been having tons of fun.

FPS all the way.
Though I'd also pick Action, RPG, Tactical, Hack N Slash, platform...pretty much anything but sports..hate sports games..

I own one of EA's NHL games simply because I can't ice skate. :shifty:

I love sports games, but I'm a huge fan of adventure games, especially when they are games like GOW that have puzzles and what not and there's a lot of things for you do to throughout the game, so my vote is going to adventure.

On the shooter peg, I will take a tactical shooter over a regular one any day of the week. Unfortunately my group of friends only play Halo and Modern Warfare 2, so the opportunity rarely arises.

I went for fighting, as they do form quite a major part of my gaming library. Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Tekken... And Smackdown Vs. Raw, if that counts.
Platformers and RPGs (in the sense of Mass Effect and Fallout 3) are close followers, though.
I'd have to say one of my favourite things in games is customisation and character creation, transcending genre, and it's definitely the major appeal of Fallout and Smackdown for me. Any game with good character creation, I'm all over it.

Fighting with First Person Shooter as second.

I tried that in 1995. They wouldn't let a girl play football. So I became a madden fan

It's hard for me to pick a genre, but it has to come down between fighters and beat 'em ups. I know that neither is the most complex genre, but I just have a damn good time beating the hell out of people, I guess. Shooters I never got into until the last decade or so, though I always loved the shoot 'em type of games (like Contra), but I guess that's due to the fact that they've pretty much dominated the console landscape during that time period. Really, I'll play anything with the exception of turn-based RPGs and RTS games, but it's hard to ignore that I have a ton of fighters and shooters in my collection, so I guess I gravitate towards those.

I'll run with third-person shooters. It's just too bad there aren't more of them out there. I prefer them because, unlike first person, with third you actually know where the fuck you are in relation to cover. I was originally gonna vote FPS by default because I like to shoot shit, but I realize the games I have been most hooked to online are Gears and RE5; both third-person.
My least favorites would have to be fighters (2D especially), racing sims and real time strategy (actually, Halo Wars isn't that bad, but I wouldn't ever even think of buying one at full price). The jury is still out on puzzle games and certain examples of RPGs. Puzzles in games > puzzle games, though.

I don't have a favorite. I just play whatever strikes my fancy. I don't make a point of getting a particular type of game, rather I buy a series like "Final Fantasy" and "Mortal Kombat".

Polls like this are too general because of the way genres bleed into one another now, but if I had to pick one, I'd go with RPGs. I grew up on them, I love them. Second favorite would be Survival Horror.
Also, "adventure" seems like a wide genre, but here it includes games like Zelda or Fable. I've seen those referred to as both RPGs and Adventure games in the past, but I like the use of Adventure because Zelda isn't exactly the same type of game as Final Fantasy.
The RPG genre tends to be broken down into sub genres -- Action, Turn Based, and Real Time Strategy all make up sub-genres of the RPG genre.
Some games also hop genre between titles. The Legend of Zelda is an adventure game, but Zelda II is an Action RPG (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_role-playing_game), featuring an experience based leveling system. Fable and Fable II are Action RPGs as well (the production team certainly consider them RPGs in any case).
RPGs aren't the only genre that do this hopping back and forth trick. Resident Evil is a survival horror franchise only until you reach Resident Evil 4. It and Resident Evil 5 are clearly action/adventure games. Resident Evil 5 in particular has completely shed elements of survival horror.

Survival Horror. RPGs a close second, FPS third.
If 80s arcade games were considered a genre, it would easily be my first choice.

I have a mix of everything, but classic RPGs, along with hack and slashers, are my favorites by far. Only genre I'm not a big fan of in general is racing... 99% of racing games just bore the fuck out of me.
FPS at the moment. I dont like the Modern Warfare games, I prefer the history and weapons of WWII. Even if the next one is in Vietnam I will probably still prefer that to the future like weapons and modern urban enviornments.

I picked fighting games, though I'm more fan of that genre from the 90s than I am current fighters.

Fighters, without a doubt.
16 bit era beat em ups are a very close second.

RPG
FPS
Action/Adventure
^ Or all of my genres combined like Fallout or Oblivion. There are things I love about each of those genres, but the three that I mentioned are my favorite in order. Fighting, sports and music games are hellish fun too, but I only find them fun in group settings.

Fighting games have always been my favorite. They're just so much fun. It's cool to have tournaments at someones house, or to participate at one in an arcade.
My second would be survival horror. I'm really big on the older Resident Evil's.
