Time for new horror film thread!
From 1988, it's Jennifer Rubin's (of NOES 3 fame) starring horror flick, about a cult survivor, 13 years later. I like the new concept, and would probably give it a 6/10. Anyone else picked up the DVD from 2006?

Damn, this thread really didn't take off, did it? Haha,
My favourite character in the film was the shy girl who tried to make friends with Rubin. I felt very bad for her. Then again, I felt bad for all of them.

Wow I haven't thought of this movie in years. I'll have to try and find it on ebay or something as none of the movie stores around here would carry it.

I have this on VHS and Laserdisc, is the DVD worth getting? (Any extras, better transfer, etc)
I think the movie starts good, but gets sort of boring. The concept was almost brilliant and it also starts Dean Cameron from Summer School.

The transfer was beautiful, and widescreen too!
There's a writer/director audio commentary.
The original ending!!! (as an extra)

I'd say, a great Anchor Bay purchase!
I expected more from this. I was disappointed because I heard so many comparing this to NOES. I don't think it even comes close to it's greatness, although it wasn't terrible and the acting was pretty good.

Pete, I agree with that. It is somewhat reminiscent of the Nightmare series, but it's not as good. Still, it's fun.
Yeah, the makeup effects aren't bad either. I always thought the title was a bit of a misnomer and I would have liked it if it were named differently.

Awesome! I think I will pick this up for the extras.
As for comparison to ANOES, I don't see it. This movie wasn't nearly as close, although it seems like (at times) that ANOES inspired certain parts. The movie Paperhouse was also compared to ANOES, well it was called "The thinking man's ANOES" and it was a let down when I first saw it.

The poster for 'Paperhouse' made me think it was a 90s drama. Blech! Had no intention to see it.
Dreamaniac is always compared to ANOES, hell, the distributors prided themselves on the comparision to the franchise. I didn't think it resembled ANOES in the slightest. There was only one dream (i think? It was a little hard to follow the stupid ass plot all the time) and the killer sucked. I was hoping for a ripoff.

Actually, "Bad Dreams" was said to have been a clone of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors", which Jennifer Rubin was also in. I could kinda see it.

Paperhouse is a psychological thriller... sorta. It's about an androgynous kid's (I can't tell if it's a girl or boy) dreams where there's a young girl who's dying, or trying to killer self, I forget. He keeps going into his dreams to try and save her.
Dreamaniac, haha... you gotta give it to those SOV ad campaigns. I've seen shit like "Scarier than Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "The NExt Friday The 13th" and so on posted on the covers.

Dreamaniac really isn't good at all, I mean comparative to shot on VHS b movies it;s alright but compared to a 35mm produced movie... nope.
I agree...there are many shot-on-video slashers that I hold near and dear.

Dreamaniac is ok.
It was ok, but I think I was just expecting something a little different.

I saw this back in '06 when it aired on the Fox Movie Channel, and have to say it was alright. The ending has that kind of April Fool's Day twist with the deaths of Jennifer Rubin's fellow patients, not being caused by the returning spirit of the cult leader. But thanks to a twisted experiment by the head psychoanalyst at the hospital where she was staying.
I remember when this puppy was advertised ,yikes, twenty-years ago:eek:, when Harris, the cult leader, was touted as the next big thing in horror. Guess he didn't stick with audiences ?

I think this is a pretty good movie. It gets really good towards the end, with one great scene after another.
Wow, what a coincidence. I just saw the trailer for this on my Visiting Hours dvd and it made me want to watch it. I probably will dig it out at some point this week if I get a chance.

I remember when I first saw this as a kid, I was confused by the ending. I actually thought Harris survived the fire, and was the doctor, lol.
I remember not liking it that much at first. I saw it again years later, and started to dig it.

Hey, fans of this movie, pay attention to OTH soon, we've got a way early look at the new Shout Factory release.

I just saw the trailer for this on my Visiting Hours dvd...
That's fucking weird because that's what it's paired with on the new Shout Factory double feature.

anybody else think this movie was David Koresh's inspiration?

Doubtful. I thought this flick, or the crazed minister was inspired by Jim Jones. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Jones) It seems to be part of the pattern with these cult leaders with the suicide pacts.
