I remember watching the movie waaaaay back in '86. If memory serves, King Kong won.

A description of that particular movie on wikipedia states:
"While the ending of the film does look somewhat ambiguous, Toho confirmed that King Kong was indeed the winner in their 1962/63 press book Toho Films Vol. 8, which states, A spectacular duel is arranged on the summit of Mt. Fuji, and King Kong is victorious"

Now, I don't know too much about either character. King Kong is supposed to possess incredible physical strength, have semi-human intelligence, and he's been depicted at a height of anywhere between 18-24 feet tall (1933 film) to a height of 60 feet.

Godzilla is roughly 300 feet tall. With his formidable strength, teeth, tail, and his atomic breath, I say he tears the big monkey a new ass 10 times out of 10, It should be a lopsided fight... no contest. :|

Who do you think would win, and why?

Godzilla's height varies from series to series. In the Showa series (1954-1975), Godzilla was 50 meters tall (164 feet). In the Heisei series (1984-1995), Godzilla started out as 80 meters (262 feet) and grew to 100 meters (330 feet) in 1991. In the Millennium series (1999-2004), Godzilla's height changed from film to film. In most of those films, he was 55 meters tall (180 feet), but in GMK, he was 60 meters tall (200 feet) and in "Godzilla Final Wars" he was 100 meters again (because he was supposed to be Godzilla Jr. from the Heisei series in that one).

King Kong, who appears in "King Kong vs. Godzilla" is not the same monster who attacked New York in 1933. He is a brand new monster who exists in the Godzilla universe. This giant ape was 45 meters tall (148 feet). The original King Kong (as well as the Kong from the 1976 remake) was 50 feet tall.

Anyway, who wins? Just like with the film it depends on who's the villain. If Godzilla's the bad guy, Kong wins no matter the illogicality behind it.

Kong actually won in that horrible movie, but really Godzilla would win. He's way bigger and has that nuclear breath blast. It would be over in seconds.

Rich, have you seen the Japanese version of "King Kong vs. Godzilla"? If you haven't, it hardly seems fair for you to call it "horrible". The U.S. version (which utilizes about half of the original cut) is not the real film.

Also, see my post above yours for why Kong wins. Godzilla being about fifteen feet bigger than Kong isn't that big a deal.

The only version I have ever seen is the version Universal released on DVD a few years ago. I got it in a double pack along with Kin Kong Escapes which I enjoyed a lot.

Yeah, fuck the U.S. cut. The American producer John Beck didn't understand the Japanese version so he recut it, added sequences with American "actors", and dumped the original score for stock Universal themes from "Creature from the Black Lagoon" because Akira Ifukube's (wonderful) score was "too Asian-sounding".

Ishiro Honda's original version is a classic... but never meant to be taken seriously. It's a satire of commercialism (which was running rampant in Japan at the time) and the kaiju eiga (monster movie) genre to that point. When you take a satire and try to cut it so it plays straight, well... you saw the end result.

Godzilla. As everyone else said, atomic breath pretty much seals the deal. Plus he has hard scales vs Kong's fur and flesh.

I voted Kong becuase I didn't understand the poll and didn't bother to read.

Godzilla would obviously win in real life.

And I LOVE KKVG, btw.

Actually, in the original, Kong was about 25-30 feet, but they advertised 50 feet to make him seem more monstrous.

As for the poll itself, Godzilla wins in a literal stomp.

Well, if the makers say he's 50 feet, then he's 50 feet. The scale really doesn't have much to do with the statistic particulars. Very often Godzilla and other monsters (on both sides of the Pacific) are out of scale with what they're supposed to be, but that doesn't change their official statistic.

From what I know the makers only said it was 50 feet to make him more monstrous, but have admitted to him being only 25 feet. Either way, he's no match for Godzilla at all.

King Kong is big and strong ape. Outside of that he seems to have nothing extra or special going for him.
Godzilla seems to be much bigger and much stronger. He also has a nuclear breath which would completely destroy King Kong.
I'm thinking this fight will be short and will result in the smell of burning monkey hair and a giant radioactive Kong corpse.
