What's your favorite Final Fantasy console game?
I picked the very first game; it's far and away my favorite. The ability to select different characters for your party, and the fact that it was head and shoulders above anything else at the time, AND the fact that I come back to it again and again, makes it my favorite NES game of all time.
Part VI is my runner up.
I loved X
I liked the story and overall I had the most fun playing it.
Only thing that pisses me off about FF games was having to level up and work on A LOT of characters. It started to become a pain after a while.

Never tried X.
I have the same complaint with the games, my biggest gripe is the CONSTANT battling. I quit IV and IX on the final dungeons because it just got too damn frustrating... attacked over and over and over and... yeah. :(

Final Fantasy VI
I love the characters & the story of this one. Plus, it's been one I've been playing since it came out on SNES when I was a kid. It's right up there amongst my favorite games of all-time too.
Final Fantasy VII is the runner-up. Another excellent game. I haven't played anything past FF IX, however.

Yeah, I enjoyed the battling and getting my characters level's really high, but at times, it was a fucking pain in the ass. Especially, if you are already leveled up quite high. I wish there was a feature to turn down battle frequency

Luckily for me the constant leveling is part of the fun for me. I don't mind sitting in one area where you get 300XP a pop and just sitting there for an hour and just doing the same battles over and over.
VII is my absolute favorite. The story enthrawled ne from beginning to end and the materia system was so addicting. Everytime that sword goes through Aerith I shed a tear; it's just that heartbreaking to me. I love that game.
X is my second favorite, but only for the Tidus/Yuna love story. The rest of that game can suck my cock. Blitzball to me sucked, I played it in the story and that's it. The rest of the game was just spent rooting that it wasn't a dream.

FF IV and FF VI. I love the stories, the music and the fun factor.

Which one had the trio of very different-looking sisters you had to fight and only attacking the one in the middle did any good? It was on the SNES,

FF IV with the Magus Sisters. Though all three were vulnerable to attack, it's Sandy who causes the most problems and should be taken out first. She casts reflect on Cindy.

I guess that was my favorite one then. Loved the soundtrack for that one.

7 was the only game in the series I could stomach. DOn't know why, I just get put off by the others.

Monkey, you left off two sequels and a prequel: Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus, and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.
And where's mah Mystic Quest option? :X
My favorite game in the series fluctuates, but in general I tend to prefer Final Fantasy VIII. It's the first one I played on the PSX, and I loved it at the time. Final Fantasy VI is easily my favorite SNES RPG, and Final Fantasy X is among my favorite PS2 RPGs. These definitely comprise my top three in the series.
I'm also quite keen on Final Fantasy Tactics. It's not for everyone -- a single random battle can take 20 or 30 minutes -- but I love the strategy of it. I just wish the game script were better. I also wish they'd release a sequel for the PS3.
I wish there was a feature to turn down battle frequency
There tend to be items in the Final Fantasy games that lower the random battle encounters, or stifle them all together. I'm sure there's such an item in Final Fantasy X-2, and am pretty sure the same item exists in Final Fantasy X.
There's an area in Final Fantasy VIII where you get into a battle every two or three steps, and there's no save point in the dungeon. It's an optional place, you don't have to go there, but I like to fight the Ultima Weapons in each game, so I had to go. I think I let the PSX sit overnight about midway through the dungeon and came back to it the next morning.

Same for me. That's why I'm so good at a lot of recent action games that have RPG-esque elements, like [PROTOTYPE]. By the time I unlock a new set of skills, I've got more than enough EP to purchase them because I grind, and grind, and grind. I can't even count how many times I've destroyed infection hives.
VII is my absolute favorite. The story enthrawled ne from beginning to end and the materia system was so addicting.
I'd probably be a lot more into VII if the script weren't utter bollocks. There are very few localizations that are as awful as that one. Some of the dialog is painfully bad, and it's a grammatical nightmare. Tactics suffers from similar localization issues, although I hear the script for the PSP port is much better.
Blitzball to me sucked, I played it in the story and that's it.
My Blitzball team was amazing by the time I reached the end of the game. I must have dumped nearly 100 hours into Blitzball alone. I wanted for Square to release an expanded and deepened Blitzball game for the PS2, I enjoyed it that much.

Ah, shit! I forgot about Mystic Quest! I still have that somewhere....
Still liked 7 more.

IV for the SNES has the worst. There was a whole passage during the start that was lost, misspellings and what not. When I played Advance for the first time, I was pleased at how crisp and perfect the dialogue was.

Ah, yes, that one. I love that game too.

I've only played IV and VI, but I know with the latter there's the Moogle Relic that stops random encounters and another that decreases that decreases them, but they still happen.

Yeah, but you need to build up experience to fight those final battles. With IV, I always go for level 60 for everyone. Especially when I play Advance and go through the Lunar Ruins.

Eh, I just put down the main titles, without prequels or sequels. I left off Mystic Quest, because it wasn't really a main title. It was more of a FF game for newbies. Doesn't really account for tactics, though...
It seems that the first final fantasy game we play tends to be our favorite (mostly). I think the majority of American players were introduced to the series when VII came out for the PS1.
I managed to beat 1, 5, 6, & 7. I tried 2, 3, 4, & 9. Ended up getting bored & frustrated with 3, 4, & 9. Never played 8, as it is still in the original wrapping from when I picked it up back in 2001. :)
On the flip side... I absolutely HATE Final Fantasy 2 (re-released on the PS1, never released for the NES stateside). That game is a nightmare. I understand they wanted to change the game play, it seems more realistic (the more you get hit, the tougher you become... the more you fight or use magic, the better you become at fighting or magic use), but I'd rather have the old leveling up with XP option. It was a hardcore game. I remember trying to get through a town that isn't too far north of the starting point, only to be defeated time after time after time. Has anybody beaten this game???

The series was under promoted in the US until VII came out, which is why so many latch on to it. Not saying it's bad, but that's why. You are correct about that. Only the die hard RPG gammers or those who knew someone who had it, had bought the game or borrowed it from a friend. Nintendo really dropped the ball there as they could've had the jump much earlier on.
But I'm telling you, IV is worth finishing. By the time you get to the moon the second time, everyone should be at level 50 to 55. If you have the PS versions, then that is the hard version. The SNES, the GBA and DS Lite all vary in intensity levels. With the latter being the toughest.

When I get home, I will plug in my PS1, and beat the piss out of this game.
I only do that because you recommended it.

That's okay. But trust me, it is well worth it. When you get a chance, what level is everyone at and what parts do you have left?
7 and 10 were easily the best. Then again, I never played any of them past 11.
