What is it with Depp and the 1890's? I mean this has to be the fifth film of his that took place in the 1890's.
Also the poster is kickass.

I'm a little tired of the Johnny Depp/Tim Burton collaboration. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, though.
Oh, for goodness sakes, I just read that Helen Botham Carter is in this, too. She'll never come close to Angela Lansbury's portrayal of Mrs. Lovett.

Well since Burton and HBC are soul mates or something it makes sense to put her in the flick because after all he's the director.

As much as I like Johnny Depp (and Tim Burton) I have to say I agree 100%!
I really hope this one will make me change my mind though!

I've enjoyed all the movies they have made together so far, so I'm pretty sure this will be good
Since Johnny Depp's in it, I'm sure I'll like it. :)

He's not really my type....but he's a great actor. I didn't like him as Willy Wonka though.

It appears that WB wants this movie about a Psychotic, Demonic Barber cut down to get a PG-13 rating:cry:

WAIT, YOU HAVE JOHNNY DEPP MURDERING PEOPLE AND TURNING THEM INTO FOOD?"

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is one of those rare operas that crosses over into geek circles mainly because of the subject matter: a barber who kills his clientele and, along with his ghoulish landlady, turns their corpses into meat pies to be sold to the poor of London.
It turns out that the suits at Warner Bros may not have read the whole pitch when Tim Burton sold them a movie version of the show – maybe all they saw was Johnny Depp in period garb and figured it was good for a billion dollars international. But now, after having seen some of the footage that Burton has shot, the execs are feeling a little squeamish and, according to the New York Post’s Page Six, are asking the director to cut back on the splatter.
Apparently they’re upset about the amount of blood in some of the scenes where Todd dispatches his victims with a razor slice to the throat. Also upsetting the WB tie-wearers is a scene where a 10 year old boy feeds corpses into a meat grinder so they can be made into pies.
Is Burton not obligated to deliver a PG-13 film? I guess that Sweeney Todd is sort of R-rated in very concept, but the MPAA is a tool of the studio system and I’m sure that they would allow some slashing and cannibalism to get by with a weak rating… unless Burton really pushes the issue, which is what it sounds like he’s doing. I can’t really think of an R-rated musical in recent times.
Meanwhile, David Poland ran the above teaser poster on his site without attributing where it came from. It looks like a photo of a theater display to me, but it could have come from an official source as well. Personally, I like it a lot better than the Edward Scissorhands-esque poster that came out of Comic Con.

Mark Salisbury (who wrote a companion book for the movie): "Incidentally, all those reports of Burton being asked to cut back on the blood in the movie, don't believe a word of it."

The trailer wasn't that bad but it had the feel of Sleepy Hallow.

You know what? I liked the trailer.
I was kinda "yeah...Burton/Depp again...meh". But if the movie is as nice as the trailer, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna like it.
Thanks for posting it here, hack slash.

I love Burton/Depp and do not tire of that combo. I wish Depp was in Batman as Batman.

I'm going to have to wait to see this on DVD, but I am quite keen. I've always liked the concept of Sweeney Todd, but I've never seen it performed live.
I've already started quoting the line "The years, no doubt, have changed me." Great delivery by Depp.

I saw this tonight. Pretty good. It's a musical so it's not everyone's cup of tea. Has some gore and blood sprays as well which was quite different what with the signing going on. It's basically a dark musical with 85% singing.

I have never seen the play, but I saw this last night and loved it. It just might be my second favorite Burton Film after A Nightmare Before Christmas. I'm sure some people will be turn off by the musical aspect, but since I have not seen many musicals, I found it to be a rather fresh and invigorating experience.

I liked it quite a bit. It was rather brutal, both as far as the violence goes and the emotional resonance of it all.
I think people who like Grand Guignol horror but aren't big musical fans should give it a chance. The way the songs are written, they almost just sound like conversations set to music. Plus, the actors mostly don't have big Broadway voices. It's a different sort of musical than some of the other ones that have made recently.

I wasn't sure how I felt about the film the first time I watched it, but on second viewing I realized I loved it. I was a bit disappointed because it feels a bit hollow in terms of plot, but then I read that the stage play is about an hour and ten minutes longer than the film. A lot had to be cut out to make it work as a film.
I particularly like the songs. There's not a lot of musical films coming out these days that feature an entirely orchestral score. A lot of films feature songs that are more pop/rock driven, and while Depp's singing voice is kind of grungy, the songs themselves are all performed by a seventy-eight piece orchestra. Lovely stuff.
The more I watch the film, the more it grows on me.
too many slit-throats.
I don't think there were enough, or at least I would have preferred they were spread out. Outside the encore of Johanna, there's only two other slit throats.

I totally loved every minute of this movie, it was visually awesome to watch and I loved the story. I have to say the first time I watched it I found it kind of obvious that the old crone was his wife and that she was still alive which actually enhanced my viewing because when he slit her throat, just so he could get his revenge I felt physically sick for the rest of the movie knowing what he had done.

I'm a little tired of the Johnny Depp/Tim Burton collaboration. .
Still haven't gotten to the De Niro/Scorsese level yet.
