View Full Version : What sport is taking the worst hit from scandals....

Not necessarily which is the worst crime....but which league is looking the worst right now....
I'd say NBA. The ref essentially cost people millions from fixing games, cost teams wins, and called unfair fouls on players, some of which I believe resulted in suspensions.
Vicks stuff is bad too, but I think the NBA ref has affected people.

I think the scandal involving the NBA is huge in terms of which sport took the worst hit. I think the MLB is right behind them though.
I followed the NBA playoffs this season right until the final game in the NBA finals and I can't believe this guy called some of those games. I was totally shocked.

NBA easily.
What's going on there has hurt the integrity more. In MLB steroids are aproblem but it seems that steroids are an old issue.

I voted for baseball, just because it's been flashed in the public's attention for soooo damn long now.

Definitely the NBA.
That Jack@$$ actually worked the Phoenix/San Antonio series.
That is not a good thing.
Besides Wrestling (please don't get into "it's not a sport") I would say baseball but it is soon going to be overtaken by the NBA scandal.

I think wrestling is in for some serious trouble in the next year.
I hope this NBA thing, takes the spotlight off of MLB.

NFL will never lose money. It's the prototypical league that every other league should follow. The only major sport taking a hit from scandals is MLB, and it's barely taken any kind of hit. So, I guess the NBA would be taking the greatest hit, since it's an official that's involved.

I think the NBA will be fine. Considering the fact that the worst the Ref could do is call bullshit fouls in order to fix a game, and even then what if the player misses the free throws to put them up?
I voted Football because it just seems that the crimes they are getting into are just so bad. Vick with the dog fighting, Jones with the violence, Tank Johnson and all his damn problems. I do agree that baseball has been in the spotlight on steroids for so long, not to mention that a major record is about to be broken and steroids seems to be the cause for that.
The bullshit that I hate when it comes to scandals effecting a business, because essentially thats what these sports are, is the fact that there are people who are bank tellers that take steroids. There are ice cream men that participate in dog fights, and bartenders that bet on sports. Meanwhile, since they aren't under the public eye, their profession doesn't get any scrutiny. I feel the media should stop looking at these acts in the name of the sport, and more with blame on the people individually. The only reason the sport itself should come under fire is the way that they go about handling the punishment on the players for these acts. Unfortunately, they usually don't do a very good job.

I hope this NBA thing, takes the spotlight off of MLB.I agree with both of you that wrestling has probably taken the worst hit, but in terms of nonpre-determined sports I'd say a tie between the NBA and the NFL... although the Vick and Pacman shit is only really gonna affect their sports public image (unless they get off scot free), while the NBA stuff is something of an internal issue that could start up a whole conspiracy issue. So in the long run I feel the NBA issues will be far more longterm.
Hell and come to think of it the Pacman shit could spread into wrestling as well if the TNA deal pulls through.

Vick and Pac's situation should not effect the NFL even if they are let off of charges. The NFL suspended both of them and in Vick's case the team is asking for money back. What else can they do? Ya know? I think if the NFL closed their eyes to it then yes.

Most definitely baseball. Does anyone still respect the sport?

I think the sport still has a lot of respect. Every sport has steroids issues, football has a lot of people suspended for steroids- Shawn Merriman, Ray Edwards, Hollis Thomas, Ryan Tucker, Jarrod Cooper, Wade Wilson, Kenny Peterson and so on. Besides that MLB has 30 named banned substances that they test for, the NFL has 15.
Steroids is a huge problem in every sport, look at track and field as well.
I just think MLB is taking the brunt of backlash of steroid use period when MORE people on the NFL has been suspended in the past 3 years than in MLB. MLB still has a lot of dignity. Ichiro Suzuki is one reason, broke the hits record on pure skill. Things like that keep me interested in MLB, not the HR hitters.

Personally, I think they've overblown the whole steroids thing. Yeah, guys have done them... big whoop. Imho it's just a way for them to get some media attention... if guys wanna juice and have organ damage, go for it... it's their loss in the end.

The other issues have blown over since this thread started, but the steroids issues are still in the spotlight. I think the fact people lied about it too is hurting the sport.

The steroids issue will never go away. People in baseball and all sports will always do them. The testing is too lenient and you can blame MLB for that. The NFL probably has just as many steroid users, but we'll never know because the NFL doesn't test for many of them. It also seems that when players in the NFL are caught using steroids it's not at all publicized.
As for MLB, we'll never know who all did steroids and hopefully players will get smart and stop for their own sake.

... I think wrestling is in for some serious trouble in the next year....
Why is that? If I had to take a stab at it, I'd guess it would have something to do with the premature deaths (the effects of the wrestlers trying to keep up with their unbelievably rough lifestyle... Chris Benoit, steroids, etc.)
I went with MLB. The NBA thing is bad, though, because I remember multiple incidents where owners, coaches, and players have ripped the officials over the years and it seems like their complaints may have been justified. Once you remove the integrity of the game, you ruin it for the fans.
The NBA official and Vick scandal are basically isolated incidents (then again, are more NBA officials on the take?). The NFL is so popular, they can shrug the Vick incident off (IMO).
The way I look at MLB is that just about all of the best players have been linked to steroids somehow (cheating). It's as if, all of their heroes/top players must be doping. It's gotten to the point where if an athlete is extremely successful in baseball, I automatically wonder if they're injecting. That's not good... I'm not a big fan of baseball, though, so maybe I'm only paying attention when another player's been outed by Conseco. I don't like A-rod, but I was hoping he'd break Bonds alltime HR record. Now even A-Rod's been in the news lately with steroid allegations (whether it's true or not...).

I had a weird conversation with a coworker last night. I noticed he was always criticizing athletes for bad behavior when I was talking to him. Then I asked him why he always took pro athletes to task for bad behavior. Then he said that baseball players don't get in nearly as much trouble as basketball or football (btw which I call bullshit). I said I can't comment on that because I don't follow baseball.
Other than hazing and the occasional drunken escapade (Patrick Kane) and the fighting (right now) hockey seems to stay fairly clean. Soccer seems to stay clean too.
