Eidos-Montréal is excited to unveil its previously secret second title in development at the studio, Thief 4, the next instalment in the legendary series.

The original Thief game, Thief: The Dark Project redefined first person gaming and established an entirely new genre of stealth based game play. The critically and commercially acclaimed Thief series has won numerous awards and accolades including GameSpy Hall of Fame, GameSpot Greatest Games of All Time and The Academy of Interactive Arts And Sciences Outstanding Achievement in Character and Story Development.

Yeah, I'm going ot be over here geeking out and being one of 3 people who care...

Eidos-Montréal, which is also currently producing the much anticipated Deus Ex 3, has recruited the very best core team for the development of Thief 4. The team is comprised of industry veterans who have worked on an incredible collection of AAA titles and who each bring personal expertise in their respective fields.

“We’re in the early development stages for Thief 4, but this is an incredibly ambitious and exciting project for Eidos,” said Stéphane D’Astous, General Manager at Eidos-Montréal. “While it’s too early for us to offer any specific game details, right now we are focused on recruiting the very best talent to join the core team at the studio and help us make what we believe will be one of the most exciting games on the market.”

Development is under way and the team is looking to recruit the very best talent as production ramps up. If you are a world-class developer looking to join the talented Thief 4 team, visit www.eidosmontreal.com to submit your résumé or www.thief4.com to join the community discussion.

Those around here who know me well know I fucking adore Thief to the point of obsession. It's probably THE most important franchise in the stealth genre, and by far the most under appreciated. Thief 3 (AKA, Thief: Deadly Shadows, because Ion Storm was batshit and gave it a shitty name) was an alright game, but for every thing they did right they did 2 wrong. Hopefully this game makes up for the errors that game commited against the franchise.

Yeah, figured I was the only one who cared. Bye, thread. Allow yourself to be obfuscated into shadow...

There's a boat load of games I love I never post about online because they're either intensely obscure or I know no body cares about them (Alone in the Dark: Inferno, please stand up and take a bow... but remember that nobody cares).

As for Thief 4 -- I have no opinion because I've never played a Thief game. I remember a lot of hype around the third Thief game a couple of years ago, and then it vanished to obscurity. When it comes to stealth games, the only ones I've played are the Manhunt and Metal Gear Solid franchises.

If Thief 4 looks like it's going to be worth a shit closer to the street date, I'm liable to at least rent it.

I had no clue that the Deadly Shadows game was already part of a series. :X

That said, I really didn't enjoy that game too much.

Thief: Deadly Shadows was the 3rd part in the franchise. It was not numbered because Ion Storm (in their infinate wisdom) thought numbering the series would alienate new players from picking it up. Which to this day I do not understand, as they add so much story from the previous two into it, it's easy to get lost if you don't have knowledge it's a sequel. Deadly Shadows, though a good game, was the weakest offering in the series by far. The first two in the series, Thief: The Dark Project and Thief 2: The Metal Age were better by a wide margin.

The problem stemming primarily from Ion Storm Austin's misguided direction for the series. Ion Storm didn't have the best track record when it was still around, Daikatana being a prime example. Many interviews after the game's release showed a very hostile environment on the development team that I think led to the game missing a lot of its potential.

The first two games were made by Looking Glass Studios. LGS closed down after Thief 2's release due to Eidos pulling their funding in favor of Daikatana, something I consider one of the game industry's greatest tragedies.

Eidos Montreal is a fresh studio, so I'm hoping they bring a lot of fresh ideas to the series while keeping it faithful to Thief 1 & 2.

First public reveal looks to be at GDC San Francisco this year. I'm excited as hell. Thief was the series that really started my love affair with stealth games and game design.

Garrett remains obfuscated in the shadows until then, where he feels right at home...

He owns the night. Batman just rents it from him...

Do we know yet whether or not this is going to be multiplatform?

Do we know yet whether or not this is going to be multiplatform?

Not yeah. If it is PC only like the first two I'll be screwed, though. I don't have a PC capable of playing most modern games. I sincerely doubt it won't be a multiplatform, though.

Update, 07MAY12: I now have two computers capable of playing modern games.
ADDED:
God I miss this franchise...

This is the trailer that sold me on the franchise before the first game was released in 98. I uploaded it this morning because the only other version of it is hosted by a fucker I fucking despise and I don't want him getting traffic. Video hosting out of spite.

Eidos Montreal recently had a tour of their office. Someone was snappy with a camera and nabbed a picture they shouldn't have. It was promptly torn down by a ravenous burrick with rabies, but not before the rest of the internet latched onto it.

That's either Garrett or Bigfoot...

Four storyboards leaked out of Goldtooth Creative, the company that created the award winning CGI trailers for Deus Ex: Human Revolution. They were promptly torn down but the Thief community, who is so starved for any information that they have gone into "glass fully empty" mode, latched onto them like a starved ape-beast.

Square-Enix (owners of Eidos) announced their full line-up for E3...

Thief 4 is nowhere to be seen.

You have just read a post from a very sad taffer.

In other news, all three previous games in the series are available DRM free on GOG.com, each for only $10 and setup to work on modern hardware.
