Okay, I know it's not considered "cool" to like country music, but hell, I think most of us have outgrown cool anyway. So, this is the place to talk about your guilty country/western pleasures.
Me? I'm a big fan of George Strait. I own every album from the box set to the present, and some of the ones released pre-box. I've seen him life every year since 1995, with the most recent concert being my favorite, as Ronnie Milsap opened for George.
I actually don't listen to country radio at all, because I really can't stand most of the new stuff. I like Alan Jackson and Brad Paisley, but I suppose I dig the older stuff more. Merle Haggard, George Jones, Hank Williams, Jr., etc.

I dig Hank III and Those Poor Bastards. I urge anybody into against the grain/true alternative music to check out Those Poor Bastards. They're great.

I love Rascal Flatts, Garth, Trisha, King George, Doug Stone and many many others.
I'm kinda like Blake when it comes to Garth, I own all his stuff, from DVDs to CDs all the way back to when he started.
Hi, my name is Doog and I'm a Garth Brooks fan boy.

Awsome thread!!!
I love the twangy classics of the 50s/60s/70s. Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, George Jones... all great performers. I liked Garth Brooks for a while in the late 90s.
Just saw Willie Nelson in concert last month - great show.
Starting to buy more of Merle Haggard's older albums as of late.

I don't like country music perse, but I do enjoy listening to it when I'm at certain places that play it such as restaurants and my old town always plays it during their events, especially the annual fair. It's great to listen to, I have good memories with it
and I do love that country album that Alvin & the Chipmunks made, lol

Merle Haggard has such a great voice much like all of the legends from the 50-70's. Nowadays it to me seems that everything sounds alike. I miss all of the distinct voices... Merle, George, Willie, Cash, Waylon, Cash and so on. They all had voices that cut through you and were unmistakable.

Johnny Cash

Big and Rich
Cowboy Troy

Agreed. Today's country seems to be more about eye candy and flash than songwritting. I'm sure there are some performers today that'll challenge that and win, but it doesn't seem to have the same meaning it had back then.

I love the old country music give me Hank Merle Johnny or Waylon. I don't care for this new stuff, sorry I just don't think kennys tractor is sexy and anybody that beats my truck up is gonna get there ass kicked I don't care how pretty they are.

Today's country's demographic are females, not males. That's the whole problem.

I think today's country is more country rock than true country. The bands are either Dixie Chicks clones or Big & Rich clones. I wonder what the legends mentioned above think of today's country.
I like some new country and some old.
Garth Brooks
Toby Keith
Hank Williams
Johnny Cash
Lone Star
Patsy Cline
George Jones
Other than that I am not too up to date on country music.

Just picked up Johnny Cash's "Live In Ireland" DVD yesterday. I can't wait to watch it tonight.

The Ireland one is from '93 as well. Has the Carter Family as well as Kris Kristofferson singing some songs.

In the Montrose one he had The Carters and his son playing guitar.
I still wanna see the Willie & Cash on storytellers.

That sounds good.
Saw Willie Nelson's concert a few months ago. His sons' band (40 points) opened and they were okay at best. It must have been hard for Willie to pick 2 hours worth of songs from his HUGE catalog. But he covered the majority of the big ones.

I bet Willie does put on a good show!
Right now I've got Merle Haggard's "Big City" playing on the iPod. Man I love this song.

Well, in my last post in this thread I said I liked Hank III and TPB. Now I'm quite excited be cause they are touring together and coming close to me. You guys should come out and check them out. Hank is also supporting Reverend Horton Heat after this tour is wrapped up.

scab - Have you heard the Rebel Meets Rebel album? It has David Allen Coe singing, and it had Dimebag(R.I.P.), Rex, and Vinnie from Pantera. It's like a heavy country/bluesey heavy metal album. It's pretty good.
Tanya Tucker is actually one of my favorite country musicians. Although she is one of the biggest stuck ups I have ever met in my entire life though. I worked at her concert and could not believe how she treated people and what her behavior was like.

Yeah, I have the album on my iPod and love it. Hearing old school country singers sing to Pantera-esque music is awesome.

I'm sure it's hard for all of those people to pick a 2 hour set because a lot of people either way will be wanting to hear something else. He seems to do all of his big ones like Whiskey River, On the Road..., and such, which is good.

RHH is a great, fast tempo band. Should be an excellent show.
Good point about Willie, scab. He sure picked some favorites and one of his guitarists even did Hag's Workin' Man Blues.
I'm on a Tammy Wynette kick since returning from camping last week. My parents played the piss out of her songs by the fire pit and it's carried over now.

My favorites are:
"Carrying Your Love With Me"
"Texas"
"Write This Down"
"If It's Gonna Rain"
I really like a lot of others too, but there's something about those songs...dunno...I love them.

I did. :p
I wasn't a country music fan back then in '97 and I wanted one of Alice's ballads as 'our' song; something like You And Me from his Lace & Whiskey album. It's mellow.
Come to think of it... the first three traditional songs (bride and Groom song, wedding party song, then parents' song) were country tunes.

I've been getting nito country music alot lately, I'm still not crazy for it, but I notice myself stretching out my taste for country music, especially The Charlie Daniels Band...The Legend of Wooley Swamp, what a song!

George Jones announced a second date to his already-existing Edmonton show, and Charlie Pride is coming too (on his own). Not sure of the exact dates, but I'm guessing the Summer months.

I'm trying to talk my dad into going with me to see Charlie. It would be a great show for sure.
I have worked at two Charlie concerts. He was a cool guy and as a non-country fan, I thought he was pretty good live.

The last time I saw George Jones his throat was bothering him and he sounded awful. So far the best country shows I've seen have been Garth Brooks in '96, Merle Haggard in '04, Willie Nelson in '07.
Willie Nelson was pretty cool, I seen him live once. I liked George Canyon too, he put on a great show.

Most of the Country bands/singers I want to see hardly ever come our way or they're dead; Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Conway Twitty, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings to name a few.

Legend of Wooley Swamp rules. I always wished it would become a movie when I was little. I don't know if Charlie Daniels is really country or not but I think he kicks ass.

Been listening to Loretta Lynn alot lately. There's another performer I'd like to see live.
Trace Adkins is on The Celebrity Apprentice, so I've been watching that because of him...
I listen to a lot of country music. My favorite artist is Keith Urban, but since he's become so popular after marrying Nicole Kidman his ticket prices are rediculous. I used to be able to see him in concert for like $30-$45 but now his ticket prices are like in the $100s.
The local amusement park has their list of concerts for the summer:
Blake Shelton - May 24th (I've met him twice and have seen him in concert 3 times)
Craig Morgan - May 31st (Never saw him but want to)
Jason Michael Carrol - June somethingth (never saw him either)
And David St. Romain (if you watched last season of Nashville Star) is from Baton Rouge, (so he does a ton of concerts out here) and will be doing a benefit concert out here next weekend, so I'm really looking forward to that.

I'm another big fan of the older stuff...I love Hank, Johnny, Willie, Merle, Waylon and Roy Acuff. I also really like David Allan Coe and Steve Earle, who I think is one of the best songwriters out there today. His first album, Guitar Town is one of my favorites.

Earle is a great songwriter much like Coe in his prime. People don't realize how many hits Coe wrote for big stars. One of the biggest is Take This Job And Shove It that Johnny Paycheck recorded and Would You Lay With Me recorded by Tanya Tucker and Johnny Cash.
I have been really into George Jones' 1950's rock and roll stuff lately. The Love Bug album mainly.
Garth Brooks has always been a guilty pleasure of mine too. I can't think of many of his songs that I don't like...

Listening to Merle Haggard's Sin City Blues right now. His '1996' album has some great music on it.
