Russell Brand has signed up to star in a remake of cult comedy Drop Dead Fred - as an imaginary friend. Skip related content
Brand will star in a new adaptation of the 1991 film, which originally featured comedian Rik Mayall and actress Phoebe Cates.
The film tells the tale of a woman who returns to her parents' home after she is fired from her job and dumped by her husband, only to be reacquainted with her anarchic childhood imaginary pal.
And it's not the only remake the star has in the pipeline - he has also landed a role in the upcoming re-interpretation of Dudley Moore's 1981 hit Arthur.
Confirming the news on his Twitter.com page, Brand says, "Drop Dead Fred - true. Arthur - true, Kinky Bible - a film I will never make."
The original Drop Dead Fred failed to set the box office alight, only taking £9.4 million in America, but went on to become a cult hit. Arthur fared much better first time round - garnering £58.5 million in the U.S.

I thought the 1st one was just OK but not that good really I doubt I'll watch this as I don't like Russell Brand
No Phoebe Cates = not interested.
I thought the original was awful.
I guess I can still be surprised by remake announcements. Don't know why anyone would ever care to remake Drop Dead Fred.

No Rik Mayall = not interested.
Mind you, Russell Brand is batshit crazy, so he might just be able to pull it off. The original film isn't great, but Rick Mayall is hilarious in anything he does, so it's one of my childhood favorites.

My mom hated that I loved this movie growing up. It would crack me up so much. Phoebe Cates should return to acting in this as the bitch of a mother! :)
However, I'm all for seeing it because when the first was released back in the day, it kinda pushed the limits of "too much." I want to see if they tame this down for the dull audiences today or if they push the envalope a little bit more.

I haven't seen Rik Mayall in anything other than this. And I'm kinda having a hard time placing the name Russell Brand anyway. I keep thinking of the basketball player Elton Brand. o_O

Rik Mayall appeared in a handful of Blackadder episodes with Rowan Atkinson and Hugh Laurie. Lord Flashheart is perhaps my favorite comedy character ever.

For a long time, Mayall was one of my favorites to star in Doctor Who, but then there was that unfortunate motorcycle wreck, and he pretty much retired from acting. Really sad.
Russell Brand is a British stand-up comedian. He got well known over here due to the USA Character of the Week thing. I always thought the dude looked spookily like Weird Al Yankovic.

Mayall was also one of the stars of the great show The Young Ones.
Brand was in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Bedtime Stories.

Good lord, I forgot Mayall was in The Young Ones. I haven't watched that in 10 or 15 years.

Another thing from my childhood being butchered.
Namely because of the casting of Russel Brand...I hate him so much.

Yeah I don't get the casing of Brand as most stuff I've read about him over the last few months well since that bit of trouble he had over his comments.
It seems most ppl don't like him and never did

Weird Al? Fuck no. But, he does resemble Paul Stanley though.

Quoted for fucking truth, mang.
He was pretty terrible in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Everything else in that movie was good...but him.
And don't get me started on seeing him with Kristen Bell in that movie...she's mine.

Wait a damn minute here... they're remaking Drop Dead Fred? Are movie producers randomly flipping through Leonard Maltin's movie guides, blindly pointing at one page, and choosing to remake whatever movie they landed on?

Some do but TBH most from the UK I've spoke to hate the guy I don't think he's anywhere near as popular as he thinks he is
I do think in a few years time he'll be in the "where are they now" file and soon he'll just be a vague memory most may not even remember his name

Here's the thing, shouldn't they at least do a remake of a film that had SOME box office success?
And why bother with a remake? This movie is obscure enough that they could just recycle the plot and call it something else, and no one outside of movie buffs, would be any wiser.

"What a pile of shit!"
But seriously, I love that film & wish they do the remake like 30 or 40 yrs. after the first film. Why make one already? Hollywood need more original ideas.

Funny thing is when good movies are remade (some) people ask why they don't remake piles of dung like this. I never liked this movie, never will--- at least Burton is not remaking it with Depp as Fred.
You make an excellent point Scab. People are constantly complaining about the "classics" being remade, but really, what is the harm of a film that is mediocre at best being remade? I personally don't care for this idea, but I'm speaking generally. Some good examples are the Mother's Day remake and the idea to remake The Funhouse. Both ideas have the potential to be very entertaining films.

Son of a bitch. This movie may not have been a revenue raking blockbuster bonanza, but it's still a classic in my childhood book, dammit! Can I get a Picard in here, please?

Yes, thank you. I feel a bit better now that Jean Luc is suffering with me.
Of course, Kirk probably views us both as pussies.
