(thought it was time for a fresh thread)
EAST
BOSTON vs MONTREAL: BOS in 5. Bruins should take this easily
WASHINGTON vs NYR: CAPS in 7. Caps will prevail, but Rangers should give a good fight as they've improved since trade deadline.
NJD vs CAROLINA: NJD in 6: A few weeks ago I would have said NJ 4-0 but they've stumbled a bit and Carolina has been hot.
PHILLY vs PITT: PHI in 7: Probably wishful thinking on my part. Pens have been red hot, 17-3-4 with new coach, and the stole home ice from us. But going out on a limb.
WEST
SJ VS ANAHEIM: SJ in 5. Anaheim has strong veterans and will make it interesting though.
DETROIT VS COLUMBUS: DET in 4. Wings just way more powerful
VANCOUVER vs STL: VAN in 5. Vancouver just too good for STL
CHICAGO vs CALGARY: CAL in 7: Probably the best first round match up, will be a tough match up.

EAST:
Bruins over Montreal in 4 - Price is unstable and Boston is just too good defensively.
Rangers over Caps in 7 - Gut feeling/homer pick. I think Avery is going to knock Ovie off his game juuust enough. Plus our PK and goaltending are absurd, while Caps are relying in Theodore :x
Carolina over Devils in 6 - These ain't your daddy's devils. Love how Ward is playing right now
Penguins over Flyers in 6 - No disrespect to Philly, but Pitt is terrifying. Physical and a great offense
WEST:
Sharks over Ducks in 5 - This is Thornton's year. Plus Nabby is on a Vezina tear
Wings over Columbus in 4 - Get your brooms ready
Blues over Canucks in 6 - Another gut feeling pick, do not underrate the Mats Sundin playoff curse
Hawks over Flames in 6 - Poor Miika not gonna know what hit him...

Man I am the only one picking Philly. But I am a homer, I'd probably pick the Pens if I were neutral.
CanadianFonzie
04-15-2009, 03:08 AM
I'm picking Philly, but I'm unsure because Philly is one of my favourite teams while Pitts is my least favourite, so there is the act of favourites in that pick
the rest of my predictions I already posted in the NHL thread...I just can't wait for tomorrow
too bad I won't be part of a playoff pool this year, the fucking recession is leaving me and my friends with no hours at work, though I don't mind, my friends don't seemt o want to spend 10 bucks each

Pale Horse, for the love of God don't read what I'm about to say until tomorrow!
New York is winning which makes me satisfied, especially since I picked Antropov on my pool and he got a goal so far, but Philli, WHAT THE FUCK, 2-0 Pens after 2, I'm not liking this

Lets go Devils maybe the last win the Devils might get so i might as well enjoy it.
Way to go Pens Wizzard of Cros played a great game ,Malkin had a beatiful goal on a dumb play by the Philly dman and Biron.
Flyers took alot of dumb penalties especially Hartenell that stuff dont work good against good teams, especially when your defense is not that good at full strengh.
CanadianFonzie
04-16-2009, 04:42 AM
I'm glad New York won...but St. Louis is losing:(
Cecil
04-16-2009, 06:20 AM
I duno what game all these "experts" were watching where they said New York played a great game. We played like shit. Looked TOTALLY outclassed for 75% of the game and Jose Theodore just decided he wanted to let us win. Thanks Joe.
BTW, Green hit was totally dirty. Extended the elbow to the head. Flashbacks of Scott Stevens getting away with decapitation gave me a headache.
The Kozlov goal... I was literally mumbling at the TV "watch the cutter watch the cutter" and Marc Staal got busy making googly eyes at OV and hung Henrik out to dry. That's gotta change.
Was also berating the poor television for Antropov not getting the PP time he needed. Immediately followed by the television deciding to acquiese to my request and put him in for a quick goal. Who needs Torts?
Naslund with some ROOKIE penalties. You slash a guys stick halfway up the shaft, break it, and expect that not to get called? Bear hug someone with the stick in the midsection and get upset with the call? Come on kid.
Redden playing to the GOLD standard on both ends Ranger fans have come to love. Trick question: who gets booed more; Jagr in Pitt or Redden at HOME at the Garden?
Dubinsky on par with Malik with most unexpected absurd stickhandling move in Ranger history.
Bottom line, I'll take the win, but we gotta step up a lot more than that if we want to win this series. Not a good sign when you spend the entire game waiting for the moment where your defense is gonna make a bone headed play to blow it, and end up legitimately surprised/vastly relieved when the game ends with you in the lead. I think we lost the faceoff battle 739 to 8. I know Drury was out, but damn. Somebody's gotta step up and win a draw in crunch time.
What can I say. I'm a New Yorker. You were expecting something else?

Yeah I saw most of the game. Sucked. I dont mind the loss, I will take a 1-1 split on the road. But the Flyers sure as hell better have more game they did last night, or its going to be a quick exit.
CanadianFonzie
04-16-2009, 04:01 PM
well I'm just glad New York got Washington closer to elimination (though I did pick Green on my pool with my friends...picked Antropov too so at least one moves on) but Phili, I hope they play better than last night, and I hope Carter gets me a point for my pool!
and atleast St. Louis put up a hell of a fight, showing that they can, and hopefully will win the series

I was just so disappointed with last night, I mean I wasn't disappointed in the teams I was rooting for, I mean Philli did fucking great and so did New Jersey...but MacDonald hit so many posts and crossbars that it sounded like Christmas...Luongo should have counted his blessings, because if those ringerswere goals it would have been 3-2 St. Louis
on a side note, it's funny for me to be seeing Colaiacovo and Steen playing for another team...I miss them:(

Flyers got off to awesome start with quick 2-0 lead and hard physical play. Too bad they had to give up that goal with 11 seconds left in period. They better pull this one out.

Pens storm back to a 2-2 tie and Flyers turn it right back around and go up 4-2 including a big shorthanded goal. Anyone else watching? Helluva game!

I didn't get to see the game but what a pick up by getting Bill Guerin, (so far).

04-20-2009, 06:14 AM
Flyers got exactly what they need- not only a win to avoid 3-0, but a big win, with 6 goals, perfect PK, and hard physical play.
I hope they carry this momentum over into gm 4. Next game is crucial, if the Flyers win its a whole new series- best of 3. If they lose they head to Pittsburgh down 3-1. Huge difference.
I am surprised to see Anaheim up 2-0 on the Sharks. But I do think Anaheim is way better than their #8 ranking.
ledzep
04-20-2009, 01:48 PM
Guerin pretty much won game 1 for Pit. I was hoping Boston would pick him up but got Recchi instead. Recchi has done a terrific job for them so far.
CanadianFonzie
04-20-2009, 05:21 PM
Recchi's done more for Boston than Guerin has done for Pittsburgh in the regular season...of course Uncle Mark is a much better hockey player than Bill
that Anaheim game was just amazing though, I mean how many penalties did they have to kill? fantastic job and I await San Jose's demise from the playoffs in round one...mostly to show them that they shouldn't have fired Ron Wilson and that they should be kicking themselves because he's ours now

Thought this was pretty funny:
NEW YORK -- The New York Rangers had an interested observer sitting on the visitor's bench as they took the ice for their pregame skate Monday morning.
Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin was watching the Rangers practice when a Rangers trainer complained to the Capitals. Washington PR man Nate Ewell then asked Ovechkin to leave the area.
"Alex was just looking for a place to relax. He likes being by the ice," said Ewell. "As soon as he found out it made the Rangers uncomfortable, he left."
When asked why the Rangers wanted him to leave, Ovechkin joked: "Because they're afraid of me."
When asked why he did it, Ovechkin joked that he sat there to "tick off" Rangers coach John Tortorella. His answer drew many laughs from reporters.
Tortorella insisted after the skate he had no idea Ovechkin was there.
"Who? Oh, god, this is the first I've heard of it," said Tortorella. "Ask me a question about the game, not that [expletive]."
"I don't think he had a pen and paper and was writing down line combinations," joked Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau. "I can understand [the Rangers asking him to leave]. I've gotten into the same arguments with people when I've wanted privacy in my practice, so I can understand what John was going through."

They're not taking this one, but for Wednesday Patrick Kane should be back in the lineup. :)
CanadianFonzie
04-21-2009, 05:18 AM
I didn't think Kane's absence would be that significant...but right now I'm hoping it's because of his absence that they lost

On the other hand im quite crazy about the Caps win, come on Varlamov rookie goalie.
And why would MTL put Price back in goal game 3 ? They deserved to lose Price is over rated.
CanadianFonzie
04-21-2009, 04:49 PM
cause Bob Gainey is a bad coach as well as a bad GM
I do like the idea of a rookie goalie doing good in the playoffs, I mean Steve Mason could take a lesson or 2 from that, but I need New York to advance...it's just convenient that I'm not fond of the Caps
ledzep

Chicago has looked good in both games from the 1st period on.And has put up 8 against Luwongo just imagine if Chicago can put together 3 full periods of good hockey they may score 8 in 1 game.

The Bruins caused this themselves by thinking they could sleepwalk through that game. They made very un-characteristic mistakes all night long and miss-fired on point blank wide open chances. I know that game was only a hipcup, I'm very confident they will beat the Canes.

Nope, I am from Calgary, Alberta, Canada :p (wrestling fans will get the joke :P ) .
Anyways, I greatly dislike my hometown team, and a lot of the people here are bandwagon fans (ever since Cup run in 2004) and sore losers (Edmonton people will agree).
I am a diehard Carolina fan because ever since I can remember I have been a massive Hartford Whalers fan, so when the team moved, I followed them. Also, Eric Staal and Rod Brind'Amour are my two favorite players, not to mention they got my favorite goalie Cam Ward who I have been following since his junior days.

the one thing I love about Calgary games, and it never fails, the stands are filled with red, everyone comes to appreciate the team, here in Toronto, people like to rub it in to the loyal fans (such as my) faces that the Leafs are going through a total slump, alot of people here became Habs fans just to rub it in our faces
and at Leafs games...in terms of comparing the crowd to Calgary's "sea of red", we have nothing like that, all the gold seats go to people in business suits with no interest whatsoever in the game, they are just there on their cell phones doing business, only there because they can afford it

Yeah, and that is a culture thing IMHO, I know people from Calgary that got gold club seating for leafs games and they wore suits.
Those seats weren't a very big "Sea of Red" before the 2003-2004 season. I feel/felt the same way about the Oilers, when they reached the finals in '06. In Alberta, it is getting Canuck crazy here now. I see tons of cars/trucks driving around with Canuck flags... Alberta = Bandwagon Province.

Even now Bost and Caro are getting punished TV wise the only reason there getting coverage tonight is cause Crosby and Ovie arent playing a game tonight. Its like Versus forces Crosby and Ovie on you wether you like it or not.

Yeah, the NHL wants everyone to choke on those two. Yeah Crosby is good, yes Ovie is cool, but quit cramming them down our throats. They are the fuckin' John Cena's of the NHL. The hype surrounding those two is insane, Eric Staal is doing just as well, what about Malkin too?

I dont think you can really say that about Pens. Crosby, Malkin, Fleury were all drafted. They are historically a small market, cash strapped team. As much as I dont want to see them in the finals again, it is good to see a small market team doing well. I'd rather see them win than the Red Wings.

Yeah I was saying the same thing in the DRAFT/PROSPECT thread. Isles have #1 overall, plus another first rounder, and three 2nd rounders. Plus, a ton of cap room. If they play their cards right they can be a serious contender within 3-4 years, and at the very least back in the playoffs next year.

Congrats to the Pens I guess. It was a tough series for me as I didn't want either team to win. I view the Red Wings as the Yankees of hockey, and as I said before I am surrounded by Pens fans here who already gave me enough crap about Flyers as it is.
I just hope we dont see Wings-Pens III, and its a very realistic possibility!

Congrats Pens 2009 Cup Champs whew hooooo!
Nice to see someone put a end to Detroit Bandwagoneers, bunch of crybabys anyway.
Hey Maryian Noshow you picked the wrong team next he will want traded to the Lakers.
And all this BS about Crosby being a crybaby yeah he looked like a real crybaby trying to go out there and try to play hurt. And had enough class to sit on the bench and not hurt his team total class act guy.If hes a crybaby then crybabys are awesome in my book.

Not every Red Wings fan is a bandwagoner. I've been a fan of theirs since 1995 or so, back when they weren't really winning Stanley Cups. ;)

Yeah if it's nonsense why did you go out of your way to insult Detroit fans?
I guess they're even since the Wings beat the Pens at Mellon Arena last year to win the Cup. ;)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! OBEY THE HORSE COCK, BITCHES!
I'll obey his high schooler facial hair.
I hear this prick didn't even shake Lidstrom's hand. What a disrespectful little turd. If this is the new age of NHL stars, I think I'll take a pass. :X

Thats because Detroit did not wait around with class like Pittsburgh did for Detroit when they won the cup.Detroit hurried to the handshake line so hey there loss thats just something else for them to cry about cause they loss. And im not saying this to stir anything up this is the truth its been stated by sports reporters etc.
As for your confusion on Maryian Noshow ill explain he produced no goals in the cup finals.
And yes when a team wins a cup it gets many bandwagon fans so it dont surprise me that alot of them are jumping on the Pitt bandwagon.

Crosby has never impressed me, especially in the Stanley Cup finals where he did dick for the most part. I think he had a goal & an assist but that's pretty much it besides the hit he took in game 7. :D

no he was held goal-less in the final, the playoffs were all Malkin's...Malkin I don't mind cause of the 3 "superstars" in the nhl right now, he's the most overlooked...but I'm still not a fan

I thought he had a goal in game 3 or 4 of the final. I didn't get to see either one but Pittsburgh won both of those.

Although he never tore up the finals, I think Crosby's league leading 15 playoff goals and tied for second place 16 assists (not to mention +6 more than Malkin) don't exactly make the playoffs "all Malkin's".

Nope. Not a Crybaby in the slightest. But, a (not his fault) over hyped (for the most part) snubber he is at that, either that or he is very, very, young and was overly excited to get his hands on the cup and should have apologized for missing shaking hands.

Malkin got the second most points in playoff history behind Gretzky, the playoffs were his
Mario Lemieux is behind Gretz, if I'm not mistaken. And, both of them placed ahead of 36 points multiple times in their careers.
Sidney Crosby - 1.29 PPG +9
Geno Malkin - 1.50 PPG +3
I'd hardly define this year's playoffs as someones (of the two, anyways). The stats are just too close, especially with Crosby's edge in the defensive end.
