Now that we have them both on DVD, which do you think is the better film.... The Goonies or The Monster Squad?

Goonies.
MS was great and fun... but The Goonies is just classic.

I'm going to say The Monster Squad. The Goonies is a classic film, but TMS was hella violent with some superb special effects and some truly dark tones. Both run about equal, but in the end, Horace shotgun blasting the Gillman, Del shoving dynamite into the Wolfman's pants, and Rudy stake blasting female vampires with a stolen bow and arrow defeat Sean Astin and the rest of the gang. Plus Frankenstein was a better "special" sidekick than Sloth.

I prefer The Goonies, besides, The Goonies had Corey Feldman, the Jason killer. ;)

Even though I like both movies a lot, I had to give the edge to Monster Squad. It's just one of my favorite movies period.
Take care and God bless.

With the Monster Squad, you feel like you're part of the club. With the Goonies it's like you're an outsider looking in.

I'll go with the Monster Squad.

I was reading this thinking like it sounded like something I said from my review, and then I realized it was. Haha. Thanks for the credit bud. :D
I stand by this. The Goonies is a great flick, but it just doesn't hold up for me the way MS does. And I attribute that to always feeling like a Squad member. Here is what I wrote:
"One thing that was never wanting was a desire to be in the Monster Squad. You see, that's the beauty of the film. You never go "Oh man, I wish I was in a club like that," because the movie makes you feel as though you already are. When the kids are up in the clubhouse, you feel as though you are right there beside them. When Fat Kid is pumping his shot gun and proclaiming that his name is Horace, you are standing right next to him. When the kids are in the Jeep and the mummy attacks in the back, you feel the fear as well, because you are right there in the Jeep. You learn with the kids that Scary German Guy is more bitchin than scary.
I think that is where Monster Squad is fundamentally different from The Goonies. I love both films, but people tend to compare the two. I would say the difference lies in that with The Goonies, you always feel separated from the Goonies. You envy them and want to be them. With the Monster Squad, it never feels like a film. Call it the magic of nostaglia, but you always feel like you are right there with the kids."
Goonies say never die, but Squaders are always in the godamned club.

Maybe that's because we see some of our selves in them? When I was that age, I used to hang out in a garden shed at a friend's house and watch movies our parents wouldn't let us see. We soon had six of us there and formed a little club. The movie reminded me of those times.
The only downside to Monster Squad (and the reason I think Goonies is the better movie) is the whole vortex angle. I found it lame.

I also agree with The Goonies. The Monster Squad was a great movie, but I still don't see all of the fuss around it. It's cute, fun, and a great 80's flick. The Goonies on the other hand was all of that and to this day for me is still fun. I still like Monster Squad a lot,but let's face it, The Goonies is chock full of classic quotes, one-liners and scenes- it's just classic.

I'm going with The Monster Squad. Both are classics but, TMS is pure greatness, IMO.

The "That's what I said!" joke was a great running gag.
My favorite line: "I love the dark. I love the dark . . . But I hate nature! I hate nature!"

Is there a Special edition dvd for goonies ? And is there a part 2 ?

A Part 2? I heard a rumor long ago that somebody wanted to make a sequel but it never came about. I think it would be cool to do a "Where are they now?" movie with the Goonies. They could pull an "IT" and have them get together again as adults for another adventure.

I think I read if Part 2 is made it will have the original cast(minus Slouth of course) but the Goonies will be about their kids who go in their own adventure
The original Goonies a few years ago

There is a Goonies DVD with commentary and such, deleted scenes... Not labeled "SE", but it is very close.

While that's certainly true, the same could be said for "The Monster Squad."
"Wolfman's got nards."
"I'm in the Goddamn club, aren't I?"
"My name... is Horace." cocks gun
"Is she a vershin?"
Of course, "The Monster Squad" isn't nearly as popular as "The Goonies," but I think that's part of the appeal to it to me. It's not a classic; at best, it's a cult classic. I love introducing people to it now that the DVD is out.
They're both fun, fun flicks that I love to watch, but if I had to pick one over the other (like I would ever have to... I have both DVDs now, yay!), I'm pretty sure I'd pick "The Monster Squad."
I'd just have one of my sisters pick "The Goonies" so I can have both ultimately. :p
I voted "The Monster Squad," though.

The Monster Squad. It just seems to have aged a little better tah The Goonies. At least to me. Also, the Squad has a bit more of an edge to it than the Goonies did, which I appreciate.

As a kid: The Monster Squad
Now: The Goonies
As a kid, I remember liking The Goonies, but I wasn't crazy about it. I think it was because I wasn't really into pirate stuff. I liked the movie anyway, though.
Nowadays, I prefer Goonies, but I also still like The Monster Squad.

The Monster Squad. The Monster Squad, The Monster Squad, The Monster Squad.
Yes, the Goonies is fun. Monster Squad is the horror fan's Goonies, and damn it if I'm not a horror fan. It's a more fun movie, and every 12-year-old's demonic fantasy come to life. I love it. I hella love it.
