Writer/director Brian Metcalf got in touch with Fango to talk up his new genre-spanning feature FADING OF THE CRIES, an action/fright flick with demons, a superhero-esque protagonist and one deadly sword. “The goal was to create a visually exciting fantasy/horror film in modern times,” Metcalf, who provided the exclusive pics below, tells Fango.
Metcalf’s script centers on Jacob (Jordan Matthews), who has saved Sarah (Hallee Hirsh) from a true evil terrorizing her small town. The malevolent force is embodied by Mathias, played by genre favorite Brad Dourif, who’s searching for an ancient necklace within the village that once belonged to Sarah’s uncle (Thomas Ian Nicholas). The film chronicles Jacob and Sarah’s journey through the town as they fend off hordes of demonic creatures while facing their own haunted pasts. THE BEACON’s Elaine Hendrix and 7TH HEAVEN’s Mackenzie Rosman also star.
Metcalf has had CRIES brewing for years now. “I have always been a fan of fantasy, action and horror, so I wanted to create a film combining all those elements,” he says. “I had come up with the original concept when I was young. I knew what kind of movies I enjoyed, so I wanted to make a film that my friends and I would want to watch.”
The result promises to be a small film with an epic scope. Shot all around Los Angeles at locations like the Disney Ranch, Sable Ranch and various greenscreen-equipped studios, the flick will be heavy on the eye candy, as Metcalf explains. “There is every type of visual effect in this film—digital doubles, keying, crowd-simulation scenes, CG blood, compositing, digital environments, matte paintings, you name it.” Much of the computer-FX work was done out of necessity, as he explains: “We have a number of scenes that were entirely shot against greenscreens, so we could add backgrounds that would be impossible to find anywhere.”
Distribution plans for FADING OF THE CRIES are currently undecided. “We ideally want to release this movie theatrically, as I’m sure all filmmakers would like, but it ultimately depends on who the distributor will be, as we are mainly working with independent financiers.” Things are looking good though, Metcalf notes: “We have just sold some overseas regions theatrically with our international sales rep, Aspect Film.” You can see Aspect’s webpage for FADING OF THE CRIES here, and keep checking back with Fango for updates.
