one of the grand-dads of metal, and a big inspiration on my part, one of my favourite people to ever carry a microphone, and I've seen him live 3 times twice with Sabbath on their Mob Rules and the more recent reunion tour, and on his Holy Diver tour, anyway, he is definetally my favourite Sabbath singer and out of his 3 main bands, I prefered him in Sabbath, though I love his band Dio and his stuff (as well as Joe Lynn Turner's) in Rainbow, all three bands are 3 of my all time favourites
anyone else have any thoughts on him?
I never liked this guy or Danzig.

Hell yeah, Fonz, I knew you'd come through. :D
Dio sings Sabs better than anyone else and he has a great stage presence. Time To Burn is my favorite tune. Have fun for whoever is going to see Heaven And Hell this Summer.

they are touring until December, than Dio's gonna go and record 2 sequels to his concept album "Magica" which is possibly my favourite Dio album ,so I'm really looking forward to parts 2 and 3, which are supposed to be released as a double disc

I just can't dig Dio, the best thing I can think of with him was the South PArk episode that rips on him a bit. Nothing against him really, he's just not my cup of tea at all, too much "fairy tale rock" for my liking.
I had an opportunity to see Heaven and Hell, but even though they were Black Sabbath at one time, with Dio it just isn't the same. I do like Neon Knights though. :p
My two cents.

He has one of the best voices in Metal (my opinion only)

I've always liked Dio.
My favorite albums are The Last in Line, Sacred Heart, and Strange Highways. Strange Highways is alot different from his other albums.....it's ALOT heavier, almost comparable to Black Sabbath's Dehumanizer album.
Magica is actually the one Dio album I haven't heard. :( It'd be interesting if Magica 2 and 3 were released as a Double Disc like you said, Fonz.
CanadianFonzie

and I'd like to see the tour for Magica 2 and 3, because I missed the tour for the first one (because I honestly didn't find out about Magica until about 2 years after), and seeing video's on youtube, he played practically every song on the album, well not surprising since it is a concept album, but unlike when I saw Iron Maiden, who played every song off their new album, Dio still played all of his classics and threw in a few others like "Sunset Superman"
but you wanna talk about a heavy and different Dio album, than go with Angry Machines, I really don't like that album, cause it's so damn different and heavy, lol
MaDMaNMaRz
07-25-2007, 04:04 AM
I actually like Angry Machines. :) Obviously not his best, but a great effort. I still prefer Strange Highways over that one.
I think if I HAD to pick one favorite, it'd actually be Sacred Heart. One thing I always loved about it was the production. It ALMOST sounds like a live recording, but obviously it isn't. The title track is one of my favorite Dio songs.
CanadianFonzie

that had some of Campbells best stuff ever on that album, it's just too bad that he never liked being the only guitarist in a band, because it's all up to him, and he doesn't think he's some major guitar hero yet I do, he is my favourite guitarist Dio had, yet Graig Goldy was around during more of my favourite albums, such as Magica and Dream Evil, I haven't heard Master of the Moon yet
MaDMaNMaRz
07-25-2007, 04:13 AM
Master of the Moon is good. I prefer Killing the Dragon over it, but it has great songs......One More for the Road, End of the World, and Shivers are my favorites off of that one.
CanadianFonzie
07-25-2007, 04:15 AM
Doug Aldrich played of Killing the Dragon, he's with Whitesnake now and is a great choice...but he outshines Reb Beach too much in the band, which I don't like because Reb is such an amazing guitarist
but my point is Doug is also a great guitarist, and he played on that Dio dvd and cd Holy Diver live...which wasn't that grat of a concert, and Doug agrees, saying they didn't even do a rehearsal that day, and I say Dio's voice was quite off

DIO definitely knows how to rock! I've got to pick up a greatest hits CD if they have one of his though. The only DIO CD's I own are Holy Diver and Black Sabbath's "The Dio Years"
CanadianFonzie
07-28-2007, 03:40 AM
oh they have a greatest hits, it's called The Very Beast of Dio, I have it, ofcourse I'm not a big greatest hits kinda guy though

Cool thanks Fonzie, I'll have to check that out.

Brandon - I actually think you might be better off getting the Stand up and Shout Anthology. It's a 2 disc set. It's a greatest hits compilation of ALL of the projects he's done( Dio, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Elf). It is more than the Very Beast of Dio, but I think that might be the better bet.
CanadianFonzie
08-02-2007, 04:31 AM
oh yah I forgot about that, I at one point wanted it, but I figured for the price and since I already have most of the songs, naw
I just recently bought Rainbow live in Munich 1977, it's quite incredible seeing Dio in his prime, before he was a huge metal icon, and the extended the songs so long, they only played 8 songs and the concert lasted almost 2 hours

It's to only pick one, but i'd say Holy Diver is my fave. I also really like Master of the Moon's cover.

Holy Diver. I spent countless hours in my younger days staring at it while listening to the album.

I spent hours looking at the Last in Line cover, I love that cover
MaDMaNMaRz
08-23-2007, 06:44 AM
Shoey - Hell yeah! I used to do that too. I'm actually going to go to the local rock/metal T-shirt store on Hollywood Blvd. and pick up a Holy Diver shirt. :) I need to rock some Dio. :D
The Last in Line is great too.
Doesn't the mascot actually have a name? I can't think of it off the top of my head.

I agree.
I like all the Dio albums with Vivian on guitar equally.
CanadianFonzie

Rising would have to be my favourite Dio-era'd Rainbow album, though my favourite Rainbow album is Bent Out of Shape, but Tarot Woman is definetally my favourite Dio-sung Rainbow song

09-04-2007, 12:59 AM
I just bought Killing the Dragon and am currently listening to it, it's very good so far, though I'm only on the 3rd song...and ofcourse I've always thought Doug Aldrich is an amazing guitarist, mainly due to his work with Whitesnake, but this is really the only full length album I have heard with him

I just saw Magica at FYE used yesterday for like 8 bucks. I didn't buy it (bought that Venom album I mentioned in the other thread) but I think I'll buy it next time I go to FYE. I also saw Holy Diver for only ten bucks new.

Edit: I bought Magica. Lord of the Last Day and Fever Dreams are really heavy. Great stuff. I haven't listened to the whole album yet.

If you like the heavier Dio songs( I love them), then i'd recommend Strange Highways. Angry Machines is pretty good too.

I have my three Dio albums packed in the car for my work retreat tomorrow. It's gonna be a rockin' drive into the mountains.
CanadianFonzie
09-11-2007, 12:42 AM
I think my favourite song of Magica is As Long As It's Not About Love...or maybe Losing My Insanity, that one is fun to play on guitar, I love that rennaissance(sp?) styled intro
MaDMaNMaRz
09-11-2007, 01:36 AM
I need to get Magica. I've heard it before, and I really liked it.
I LOVE Strange Highways. That's probably my 2nd overall favorite Dio album. My favorite song off that one would have to be Blood from a Stone. In a way, this album is sort of like Dehumanizer "Part 2". It has the heaviness and aggression of that album. :) Strange Highways is such an underrated album, IMO.

I was never aware of Ronnie being a bad guy, so he must have some reason to be saying that...don't like much how he insulted Def Leppard
Shoesalesman
10-10-2007, 06:22 PM
I watched that clip about five times before I couldn't watch it anymore.
I had no idea there was bad blood between the two of them, to the point where Ronnie vented with fans. How often does that happen where a celebrity mouths off about another celebrity in an open forum? He said: "I hope he fuckin' dies." (?!) That's a bit strong, Ronnie.
Do you think Dio knew he was being filmed, Fonz, or anyone who's seen this clip?
CanadianFonzie
10-11-2007, 03:21 AM
I don't know, I saw that video on blabbermouth.net, my trustable website for any news that's good, lol, but I don't know, he didn't seem to be looking towards the camera at all, except for when he said "Def fucking who?"
MaDMaNMaRz
10-11-2007, 06:39 AM
Meh, I still love Dio. I've never been a Def Leppard fan,so I don't care that he smashed them.
Shoesalesman

I like both.
Now that I think about it... I wish I didn't know about this feud or the youtube video, but you can't change the past. I lost a bit of respect for Dio and Vivian over this. Keep the squabbling to yourselves, boys.
No one but myself to blame for ingesting it.

Holy Diver is a great album. I agree that Invisible is a great song. The Last in Line is my personal favorite album by him, though.
My thoughts exactly! :)

I can't remember now after years of not hearing the album in full...but I think Invisible is the only song on the album I don't like

I told you! I remember mentioning it on the Tribute forum that they were going to record a new album. I can't wait!
I really wish they would just call themselves Black Sabbath. I don't think Heaven and Hell makes a great BAND name.......it's definitely a great album name, obviously. :p
I expect great things. The 3 new tracks from the Dio Years CD were great.

LOL! Well, back when I mentioned it, there wasn't anyway I could prove it. It was still early in discussion. It was one of Black Sabbbath's studio drummers that told me......Guy Morel. He's a bit loopy, though. :p
They REALLY need to change the name back to Black Sabbath for the album.

this has been a forgotten thread, but I should inform every fan of Dio's that doesn't know that he was diagnosed with early signs of stomach cancer about a month ago, but he's gonna pull through, it's still scary to think though

As a musician I never liked Dio. I didn't like his solo stuff. I didn't like him in Black Sabbath. I do admit that he is a giant in the heavy metal world. His material just is not my taste. I am sorry to hear that he has cancer though. I hope he can recover.
