View Full Version : Which F13 films did you see in the theater?

I started in 1981 with PART 2, and continued through FREDDY VS. JASON. To lay out where I stand on this series, I am a big fan. Which is strange in a way because they're not ordinarily the type of horror films I'd champion. It all started for me in 1981 when I saw FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2 in the theater when I was 19 years old (I'd missed the original, even though I'd heard about it even in places like FAMOUS MONSTERS; I guess I just wasn't interested). At that time FRIDAY 2 may have been the first "body count" movie I had ever seen, and what was strange is the way I wound up seeing it in the theater -- it was through the interest and urging of a friend at the time, a guy who actually HATED horror movies, and splatter-type films in particular! But yet he had somehow seen the first F13 and was now curious to know what happened to the boy in the lake, as he described to me before the sequel what had transpired the first time out.

I became an instant fan of Jason's carnage and killing sprees, even though as a rule I preferred the older Universal classics with such stars as Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. It was just that the F13 films gave me a chance to check my brain at the door and just have a rollercoaster ride. From 1981 onward, I'd go to see every future FRIDAY installment in the theater, and almost always on opening night with an appreciative crowd. Some fans even wore hockey masks to the premieres. It became an annual tradition -- these were great times where a hardcore "Jason fan" audience would go to see the films on Premiere Night, and they'd cheer Jason and applaud and laugh and whoop it up every time a teenager was killed. It was really a lot of twisted fun. Not "great cinema" of course, but just a good time. And I think what I liked in particular was that Jason seemed to become like the Frankenstein Monster as the series progressed... he'd get killed, then be brought back to life through some kind of continuity, and then go and stalk again.

One of the wildest F13 memories for me was going to see PART 3 the first night in 3-D... what a riot that was! One of the most memorable moviegoing experiences of my life, back in 1982! The place was mobbed, with a line like I'd never seen before. Even though my girlfriend at that time managed to get us to be first at the front of the line because she knew someone at the theater, once the ropes came off there was a STAMPEDE like you couldn't imagine ... everyone rushed the line, wanting to be the first inside ... it was so chaotic that we almost didn't get a seat despite being at the front of the line, as people were trampled, and I still recall seeing a sea of shoes and sneakers which had come off and were strewn throughout the theater corridor, as the shocked ushers couldn't control the crowd and just stood on the sidelines, dumbfounded.

THE FINAL CHAPTER, two years later, was really a lot of fun - the audience really cheered and got into it, especially enjoying Jason's "end".

A NEW BEGINNING had diehard fans groaning in places, as this was just a cheap excuse to continue the series without "our guy".

PART 6: JASON LIVES got things back on track, and it was another enthusiastic crowd who applauded the kills, cheered on the bad guy, and relished the welcome return of Jason Voorhees.

Well, those are some memories. And now we're going to get a "remake" of the FRIDAY THE 13th original again, hitting theaters in a week. Everyone who knows me is aware of how much I despise what I consider "needless modern remakes", but I'm occasionally game for a few here and there, depending on the situation .... and I'll be there for 2009's FRIDAY THE 13th, because as far as I am concerned, the original series had a nice long run, but it's pretty much a dead end. It seems like a good idea to polish Jason off a bit and start fresh in this case, and no matter what the movie is called, it's still basically just going to be FRIDAY THE 13TH - PART 12 to me. Because when it comes to Jason, this is not about Cinematic Art; just give me a crazy guy in a hockey mask killing dopey teens in a variety of different ways, and I'm happy ... (Don't forget I was one of those teens myself when the first 2 films came out!)

Seing how I'm only 28, I've only been able to see Jason X and Freddy vs Jason, in theatres. The others ones, I was way to young to see.

I'm also curious to find out how everyone else got into the F13 films? Besides which ones you saw in the theater, how did you become fans? I'm new to the board, but not new at all to the FRIDAY films!

Pretty much echoes my thoughts entirely... it's just a guy in a hockey mask. The original movies didn't make a lick of sense, so why people are getting their panties in a twist over a remake is beyond me. And by the be, the series' being remade have mostly been pretty much dead financially or in terms of quality anyways.

As for films I saw in theatres, only F vs. J. Jason X never came to the theatre here and when I was a kid, I never seemed to go to the theatre for WCNN or JGTH, which leads me to believe they weren't advertised much and I simply didn't really know. For some reason I have a memory where my cousin may have showed me a WCNN at the theatre, but that doesn't make any sense because I would have surely wanted to go. When you rent JGTH on new release and had been a fan since you were 2 or 3, all signs would point you'd want to see it in theatres, right? So, I have no idea what went on when I was 8 or 9 involving theatres. They probably never even came here.

I've only seen the last two films, since I was too young for the Paramount films and the ninth film didn't last long. As to getting into it, I was aware of the films for a long time, but didn't see my first until I saw the fifth film on cable. After that I saw six through eight, before going back to the first three a few years later. Then the fourth and ninth films.

I'm a old man...

The Final Chapter - (Twice)
A New Beginning - (Once)
Jason Lives - (Twice)
The New Blood (Once Opening Night - Twice total)
Jason Takes Manhattan ( Once Opening Day - 8 times total)
Jason Goes To Hell (Opening Day and Night - 10 times total)
Jason X (Once)
Freddy Vs Jason (Opening Day and Night- 6 times total)

I first saw 1-2 and 3 all on the same night on cable and I was hooked. But back then part '3' was a lot and he and an axe in his head so I assumed it was over. One day I was watching TV and the TV commerical for the final chapter came one .. which was just some voice over and his mask tumbling through darkness then resting on the ground. - I nearly blew load. That's where it began.

I've only seen Jason X & Freddy vs. Jason in theaters but plan on catching Friday the 13th '09 so that will be number 3 for me.

I cut my teeth on the series in 1990 when I watched The New Blood on VHS at a friend's house. About four years later, I had all nine(at the time) on VHS.

I've only seen Jason X and Freddy vs. Jason theatrically.

I remember begging my dad to take me to see Jason Goes To Hell back in the day, but he refused on the grounds that he didn't think the theater would let me in (because I was only 11 years old at the time). He did make it up to me, though, by letting me buy the special magazine that Fangoria published to commemorate the release of the movie.

And how did I get into the franchise? Shows like MonsterVision and USA's Up All Night. Thanks to those two shows, I got hooked on the F13 franchise. I spent the majority of my junior high years renting VHS copies of the movies from the local mom-and-pop video store on a weekly basis until I finally got up enough money to buy my own personal copies of them.

I got into the series, and horror, by seeing Jason Lives when it came out on video. I begged my mom to take me to see The New Blood in the theatre, but given that I was only 4 at the time, my begging was not successful.

The next year, I did get her to take me to Jason Takes Manhattan.

Saw Jason Goes to Hell opening day.

Saw Jason X in the theatre twice, despite the fact that I'd already had the movie on VHS for 4 months before it was released.

Saw Freddy vs Jason twelve times theatrically.

even though I was aged in the single digits when the first one came out.
I still remember seeing it and the people's reactions to certain scenes.

PArt 7 was SUPPOSED to be the first one I was gonna see in theaters. My big brother was gonna take me...I was 5, in kindergarten, and this little cunt named Lisa had the chicken pox and came back to school and the teacher seated her next to me and I caught it. I got to see Halloween 4 though that year, so that was cool.

I'm 23 and the remake/reboot (whatever you want to call it) will be my first in the theater. I could have seen FvJ in the theater too, but I wasn't that into horror films that much during that period of my life.

I traveled about 2 hours to see Jason X back in the day. My dad had to go with me because I was 17 and shit, but he was down for the cause. When '03 came around I saw FvJ twice on opening day and eventually saw it five times in total. I can't wait to see the new one, I guess that'll be number 3 for me.

Sadly, being 22 and all...I've only seen JX and FvsJ in theaters...

I could have seen JGTH, but opted not to.

Heh, though I do remember seeing Childs Play 3 and Halloween 6 in theaters...along slews of other Horror flicks in the very early 90's.

My first Friday in the theater was Part 4 and I haven't missed one since. I was able to catch Part 3 in 3-D a few years back. I also saw Fridays 1 through 6 at a Drive-In marathon back when JL was released which was prettty cool.

I saw JX and FvJ multiple times in theaters, but that's it. I wanted to see JGTH and can still remember the poser one of my local theaters had up for it, but, alas, my mom wasn't about to take a 9 year old to see something called Jason Goes to Hell. :misery:

I did rent it either the day it came out on VHS or that weekend, though. My friend had already seen it, and he wouldn't shut up about "the tent scene" (and rightfully so).

I saw Jason X (twice), FvJ (twice), and part 3 (non-3d version). I had the chance to see 1, 2 & 7 but couldn't make it due to various reasons.

I was able to go to a theatrical screening of part 3 in 3-D last year.

I didn't even know about JGTH until it was on the video store. Don't even know if it was on the theaters here.

I watched JX (a couple of times) and FvJ in the theater. I'll be watching the reboot too.

I thought it would be cool in this thread to discuss the first friday film you were old enough to see in theaters and what is your fav friday film and why. I was 13 in 1980 and i saw the first Friday the 13th in theaters twice, Still to this day its my favorite in the series cause it was the scariest, reason being is throughout the film you had no idea who was doing all the killing and when it was revealed it was freaky you had this 40 year old woman killing people and talking back and forth to herself in her dead sons voice that was totaly scary and she looked creepy, then when jason popped out of the lake at the end that was a total suprise everyone screamed in the theater and jumped out of there seat, i recently sat through the remake and not one person screamed during the whole film aahhhh the good ol days. please share your first friday film experience here and discuss your favorite friday film.

Sadly I was not even alive when the original was released. I was born in 1983. The very first Friday the 13th film I ever saw in theaters was Jason Goes to Hell. I was a member of summer day camp as a kid. We took a trip to the movies, and I snuck into it.

I wasn't born when the original was out, but I probably saw it sometime around '88. I can remember TV spots for TNB, and I had already seen some of the films in the series by then. First one I saw in theaters was Jason X because my parents wouldn't take me to see JGTH. Lame.

I saw it on cable for the first time, probably 1981 or 82, same for parts 2 and 3, but I saw 1-4 all together at a drive in in 1984.

I have seen them all opening day.
I was 8 when my Aunt drug me to see it.

She is still a horror movie fanatic to this day, as am I
She was talking about just watching Martyrs and Red Sands just the other day.

My personal favorite is part 4.

To me Scene for scene its the best of the series , with the original a close second.

First I saw in the theater was The Final Chapter. The rest I'd seen on HBO. Luckily, the theater we had here in town wasnt too picky about letting underage kids into rated R movies.

I was alive but I was like 6 years old.

I saw parts 1,2 and 3 on cable around 1983 or so and was hooked.

I saw Part 4 in the theaters in 1984, and every film after that.

I did eventually see part 1 and 2 on the big screen in the late 90's

The only one I have never seen in theaters was part 3

I'm kind of ashamed to say that I've only seen the remake in theaters, but it's true. I wasn't really into going to the movies until a few years ago. I was more of a rental guy. Once I started collecting horror films and getting into the franchises I made it a point to see any horror films that looked promising on the big screen. If another 'Friday' film comes along I'll be in the theater to see it.
