The latest in the revival of ’80s slasher favorites, Patrick Lussier’s MY BLOODY VALENTINE, came, saw and whipped up a 3-D storm at cinemas. Somewhat inevitably, of course, this means that a part two is on the cards.
“Originally, I wrote a sequel to the original movie and submitted it to Lionsgate as MY BLOODY VALENTINE PART II,” veteran producer John Dunning—who produced the original 1981 stalk ’n’ slash classic with Andre Link and Stephen Miller and receives an executive-producer credit on the redux—tells Fango. “They still have my script, but it relates only to the story of the first film and not the new one. So I’ll be talking to the studio soon about using a few of the elements of my follow-up and, by changing parts of the storyline, adapting it into something that follows the new version.”

Dunning, who ran the now-iconic Cinepix genre machine with Link in the ’70s and ’80s (their credits also include David Cronenberg’s SHIVERS and RABID), notes some of the challenges facing a potential follow-up. “The problem is that if you do MY BLOODY VALENTINE PART 2, how many ways can you kill people with a pickax?” he laughs. “No one is going to come back and watch another nine or 10 people die like that, so it’s a question of coming up with a new concept. But the murders in my sequel are quite varied—there are just a couple of pickax deaths, and the rest are all very original and different.”

With the first VALENTINE now finally available uncut on DVD, Fango couldn’t help quizzing the producer about possible disc releases and reissues of some of Cinepix’s other vintage chillers. Sadly, however, the news is not so good. “Yes, we also suffered MPAA cuts with HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME,” he says of J. Lee Thompson’s 1981 psycho-shocker. “But Columbia [which issued a bare-bones BIRTHDAY disc in 2004] owns the picture and has shown no interest in revisiting it for a new, longer DVD, as Lionsgate just did with MY BLOODY VALENTINE. And as far as I know, there is no interest in a remake of HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME either.”

One particularly grueling Cinepix opus, now considered lost, is 1976’s THE HOUSE BY THE LAKE (a.k.a. DEATH WEEKEND)—a flick that many fear fans would like to see back on the shelves. “Yup, I just have a videotape of that one,” Dunning says. “I believe it might be a rights problem that has stopped that one slipping out, so don’t hold your breath.” Fans were also surprised that Anchor Bay’s old ILSA boxed set failed to contain 1977’s Canadian-lensed caper ILSA, THE TIGRESS OF SIBERIA. “Yeah, we tried to get it in there back when they were doing the box, but they gave up because the rights were all over the place,” sighs the producer. “There have been some DVD releases of TIGRESS in other areas, though again, it will take someone to sort out the rights before you see it in the U.S.”

I'd definitley do to see a sequel to the remake. Hell, I would have been ready to see the planned sequel to the original. It's a damn shame that we can't look forward to a better release of HBTM...

...how many ways can you kill someone with a pickax?
Watch Simon Says starring Crispin Glover.

I'd like to see a MBV sequel.

For what it's worth, the original disc of HBTM is now out of print. Perhaps a re-release someday?

I was hoping for a sequel to the original, however that will never happen so this is definitely second-best.

I didn't know HBTM was out of print. Glad I picked it up years ago. For awhile, it was on sale at Wal-Mart for $5 during one of the Halloween seasons. 05 or 06 I think. I couldn't find it at my Wal-Mart so I got it off the net for about $7 or so.

I'd be down for a sequel to the MBV remake.

Doesn't the Happy Birthday to Me release have that crappy fake soundtrack? I mean, I'm no uncut movie whore, but, when it comes to buying, I draw the line when elements of the theatrical release are missing. That really needs a new release. Too bad it takes a remake to get good releases of original movies these days,

Yeah, the HBTM DVD has an altered soundtrack.

The HBTM dvd box art was horrible as well..

I wonder if MBV Part 2 would be in 3-D as well?? Probably not.

Rick

Would be cool if it were but that novelty won't be as ... novel ... a second time around.
The first one was good, but focus more on story next time around if 3-D can't be the hook.
Although I really hope it is in 3-D.

Ron

The 3-D in MBV didn't really do anything for me. It was a good horror flick regardless.

I'd hope the sequel WOULD be in 3D, its not like it's a this-year-only thing and it'd be great to see a horror series retain that gimmic.

Details (http://www.upcominghorrormovies.com/movies/bloodyvalentine2.php) on Dunning's sequel story (http://www.terrortrap.com/interviews/georgemihalka/03/) -

Dunning is referring to it as "The Return of the Miner", of course a tentative title.

The story picks up with Sarah now the sheriff of Valentine Bluffs. She and T.J. are married and they've had a few sons of their own, the latter around which the basic action will focus.

Seems the little town has decided to turn the old mine into a carnival attraction complete with a Mine of Terror thrill ride. And surrounding the ride are theme concessions selling masks, miner helmets, toy pick axs, t-shirts etc. Needless to say, with their experience from the past, an older and wiser Sarah and T.J. are not enthused!

Sounds a lot like Crystal Lake capitalizing on Jason in JGTH.

I'd be up for a sequel...I would rather have a direct sequel to the orginal, but that won't happen now. Scarecrow, I also hope it'll be in 3D.

I imagine he may re-write the script for that sequel to make it follow the remake. COuld be interesting to see the commercialisation aspect.

Lussier: No Bloody Valentine Sequel (http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=10250)

Quick update from Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors... Director Patrick Lussier revealed today that Lionsgate expressed it has no interest in a sequel to My Bloody Valentine 3D.

According to Lussier, the studio, while surprised by the slasher film's b.o. success, doesn't want to develop a follow-up and would prefer to leave the film as a one-shot. Lussier and writer Todd Farmer have each said they have an idea as to where to take second part.

Alas, we may never see what that idea is.

I actually wouldn't have minded a sequel, but I'm not heartbroken by any stretch.

That's surprising, since I'd figure Lions Gate would totally jump on the opportunity to do a sequel to a successful movie. And I'd totally go see a My Bloody Valentine sequel if it were made, even if it ended up going direct-to-video.

I've always wanted to see Harry Warden get his own franchise. This is unfortunate news. I rather enjoyed the remake, and would have loved to have seen a sequel.

Damn ,was looking foreward to this. It does make me wonder if Lion's Gate is thinking after SAW VI, they're getting out of the horror business which has made them some major bank. And start making more serious pictures that they can talk about with pride at all the swanky parties.

Look what happened to New Line when they abandoned horror. Lionsgate seems to be following suit. It's too bad, considering how they milked the Saw franchise for all it's worth, you'd think they'd want another franchise.

Rick
04-20-2009, 01:07 PM
well that sucks.
The original is quite the hidden gem and the remake was pretty fun.
I'm surprised too that they aren't going to do at least 1 follow up.

Ron

There's still a good possibility of a sequel somewhere down the road.

A little more info on the demise of this project from Oh, the Horror's recent interview with Todd Farmer... (http://www.oh-the-horror.com/page.php?id=778)

OTH: Despite early reports of a continuation, its been said that there will be no sequel to My Bloody Valentine 3-D. If the studio were to greenlight a sequel tomorrow, do you already have an idea in mind?

TF: There will be no sequel. We went in two weeks before MBV3D came out and pitched the sequel that would have started seconds after the first ended. The execs loved it. MBV came out and made a ton of money. We just assumed a call was coming. No call. We waited months. Finally, we were told that Lionsgate had no interest in doing sequels. So, we wrote Drive Angry.

Todd also points out elsewhere in the interview the irony of this, as Lionsgate was "a company founded on sequels", yet they saw no franchise potential in My Bloody Valentine. Maybe they were right, but I still can't help but think that they could've made at least one sequel. Oh well.

Here's to Hanniger Mines. *empties a bottle of Moosehead on the curb*

Dammit...I thought that there was going to be a positive update on this. I would have really loved a sequel to this. The first was one of the better remakes of this decade.

Rick

Are the rights still owned by Paramount and Lionsgate was hired to do the remake, or does Lionsgate own the rights now?
I, too, was hoping there would be a positive update when I saw activity in this thread.
Damn.

Does kind of suck that the remake won't be getting a sequel, because I loved the hell out of the remake, & I completely agree that the original is a hidden gem. Upon my first viewing I didn't expect much from it, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I don't think any of us want "My Bloody Valentine" Vs "April Fool's Day", but at the very least we could've had one sequel that would've closed the book on the story.

Voorheeszilla
02-23-2011, 10:29 PM
That's pretty much the way I looked at it. It would've been nice if that could've also happened with the original. It seemed as if both were actually set up to be followed by sequels but they just weren't able to come to fruition.

The opening of the lost sequel (http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=18191)

"It was going to start the moment the first film ended," Lussier tells Shock. "We were going to wheel into the hospital with Axel [Kerr Smith] and his wife [Sarah, Jaime King] was there. He goes into surgery. She goes to make a phone call in one of the waiting rooms to check in on her son. She gets to the phone and she sees these muddy footprints and looks around the corner to the bathroom and there's Tom [Jensen Ackles] trying to sew himself up. The massacre you didn't see at the beginning of our Bloody Valentine perhaps you see in the beginning of the sequel."

The word "massacre" was the operative word for the sequel, Lussier laughs. "There were several planned for the movie. My Bloody Valentine 2 would have been a massacre!"

Fuck, man. I really would've liked an MBV2. I enjoyed the first one immensely. Saw it twice in theaters. I haven't seen it since it hit DVD/Blu-ray since I figure it probably blows in 2D. I'm hoping Drive Angry is fun. I'll be seeing that tomorrow night.
