Right now I'm re-reading "The Partner" by John Grisham. Read it for the first time in summer of 2000. I remember because it was my grandfather's book that I got him for his birthday when he was in the hospital in 1997 and he passes away from cancer in July of 2000 and he left all his old books to me and this was the first I read. Really helped me get my mind off of tough times.

I finished "Mystic River" by Dennis Lehane last Friday. Pretty good, though I liked the movie a little bit more.
I'm not sure what I've got lined up next. About this time last year, a friend of mine sent me eight Stephen King books and the complete works of both Edgar Allen Poe and the Brothers Grimm, and I haven't read more than a few pages of any of them yet. I could probably stand to really dig one of them.

I'm actually halfway through this gripping tale called, "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish". It's an amazing story. I had to read it after I read "Fox in Sox". Just beautiful poetry beginning to end; I read it in one sitting.
But in seriousness, the last book I read was "The Beautiful and Damned" by Fitzgerald. I've been meaning to pick up a new book but I've been strapped for cash these few weeks. I might just take some of the books you guys are reading for suggestions. Some of them seem badass.

I've started the F13 novel Hate-Kill-Repeat and it's pretty good so far - a lot better than that shitty NOES one I read. ;) The only thing that grinds my gears a bit is the obvious British-isms in a book set in the USA. Sorry, guy, but not everyone in the story is going to refer to an intersection as a "junction" or a hood as a "bonnet." There may be one crazy fuck like Jeansie, but not all of them.

How'd I know that 18 would be one of them? :)
If you're working from the Norton Shakespeare, do you find it a bit odd that the sonnets are smack dab in the middle of the book, rather than at the beginning or end?
~Blake
ADDED:
I always thought the first part of Sonnet 27 could have been a quote at the beginning of a NOES movie.
"Weary with toil I haste me to my bed,
The dear repose for limbs with travel tired;
But then begins a journey in my head -
To work my mind when body's work's expired"

I hope Blake likes Hate-Kill-Repeat. I actually thought it was pretty good (by the standards that you can hold tie-in novels to, at least).
I did, actually. I'll forgive the British-isms, and say that it was about 100% more well-written than the NOES book. Although, for what it's worth, after finishing the NOES book, I was a bit wigged out by Freddy for a couple of days. I'm not feeling that about Jason.
Really, though I enjoy the latter flicks, zombie/unkillable Jason just doesn't provoke any fear in me. The concept of it is a lot scarier than the execution. But that's just splitting hairs. The final pages in the hotel were over-the-top, but fuck it. The thing that brought me out of the book the most is the fact that there's a fucking near-skyrise hotel in a town that's obviously hickville. That and a police helicopter. Imagine if Jefferson or Ore City had a hotel like that, lol.

I picked up a copy of Dean Koontz's Tick Tock today. I didn't start reading it yet. This one sounded very interesting. The plot synopsis definitely sounds great:
Tommy Phan is a successful detective novelist, living the American Dream in southern California. One evening he comes to find a small rag doll on his doorstep. It's a simple doll, covered entirely in white cloth, with crossed black stitches for the eyes and mouth, and another pair forming an X over the heart. Curious, he brings it inside.
That night, Tommy hears an odd popping sound and looks up to see the stitches breaking over the doll's heart. And in minutes the fabric of Tommy Phan's reality will be torn apart. Something terrifying emerges from the pristine white cloth, something that will follow Tommy wherever he goes. Something that he can't destroy. It wants Tommy's life and he doesn't know why. He has only one ally, a beautiful, strangely intuitive waitress he meets by chance - or by a design far beyond his comprehension. He has too many questions, no answers, and very little time. Because the vicious and demonically clever doll has left this warning on Tommy's computer screen:
The deadline is dawn.

If it's the book I'm thinking about (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitten_%28novel%29), then get ready for a ton of soap-opera quality stand-offs between the lead character (Elena) and her ex-lover. :pull:
Mind you, I didn't think the book was horrible. I plan on reading the next one (Stolen), but the mellow-dramatic romance between Elena and Clayton is a bit grating.

Yeah, they've been around for quite a while. I have a couple of them. The very first book (The Umbrella Chronicles) is basically an adaption of the original RE game. I also have the book based off RE2. If you like the games, you'd definitely like the books. :)

They're pretty good reads. Some continuity errors but that mainly has to do with the books coming out in '98 & '99 with Resident Evil 2 & 3. They're pretty short too. Around 250 pages each sans the novelization of RE 2, which is around 340 pages.

They've released several by now. Let's see if I can remember them...
The Umbrella Conspiracy (RE1), Caliban Cove (starring that lusty lesbian Rebecca Chambers), City of the Dead (RE2), Underworld, Nemesis, Code: Veronica and Zero Hour.
S.D. Perry hasn't done any more as yet, and she's only written two originals. I've been waiting to see if she even attempts to adapt Resident Evil 4, because the way she's developed the story, Umbrella has become a huge power house, which is obviously not the case as seen in the fourth game.
On the plus side, she made Rebecca a nubile little lesbian.

I forgot....I have Caliban Cove as well. I just haven't read it yet.
I finished Dracula last Sunday. I think it's my new favorite book.
Eh, my reading material that I'm having to get through is stacked up too high. First there's my manga collection that I'm having to read (and for some, reread):
Negima - volumes 1-15
Boys Be - volumes 1-14
Berserke - volumes 1-19
Fushigi Yugi - volumes 1-18
Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden - volumes 1-5
The Wallflower - volumes 1-13
I've read some of the volumes already, but every time I pick up a new volume of a title, it's been some time (re: at least 2 months) since I've read the previous one. Hence, I like to go back and read through them again. Then there's that most of these titles I haven't read up to my current volume in a long time.
After those, I'll probably read the four volumes of Vampire Hunter D I have before I pick up the volumes after along with Ju-On the novel and Boogiepop Phantom.

I hope that Boogiepop book is better than the movie.
The BoogiePop Phantom books are great. Much, much better than the films. It's interesting how most of the novel/s run around one event, but you read about each of these different characters during that time period.
They need to release more of them at a faster pace, but hey, I can be patient.
I'm also anticipating the Death Note novel next year since it has "L" in it.

Death Note, I've seen the movie version of those as well.
I'll be honest, the Death Note films aren't all that great. I highly suggest the manga or in this case, even the anime (love the soundtrack to it!).
Boogiepop is one oddity that the anime actually works with the manga in that it doesn't really try to recreate or make an adaption of the novels, but stories that work with them instead.
Oh, and Vampire Hunter D novels I'll take any day over the two anime film features. There are so many good stories for them to adapt if they wanted, but I'll admit that the novels are even better than the ones they made.

I'm usually skeptical of anime adaptations of manga because more often than not, the manga is leagues better.
However, this is one instance where I can say the anime is nearly even. I don't think it's better, but it's very close.
If you can, and did like what you read, I'd say read more of Death Note. The feeling of 'cat and mouse' between Light and L is such a fun read.

Yeah I understand about being skeptical about anime adaptations of manga. I'm that way about movie adaptations of anime or manga. Although the movie versions of some of Kazuo Umezz's manga's were alright. And the Initial D movie was better than I expected.

Stephen King; Hearts In Atlantis.
Decent enough but I won't lie..I skipped a bit of the third story. I didn't like the way it was written at all.

Nothing but a typical teen "Point" story but I fancied something simple after two reletavely long S.King's.

What's Fruits Basket about, Skye? If I can't find the next volume of Naruto when I go to Books-A-Million next week, I might pick up Volume 1 of Fruits Basket instead.

It's a very fluffy comedic manga about a girl named Tohru Honda who is an orphan and comes to live with these 3 guys, who are members of the Chinese Zodiac (meaning they turn into their zodiac animal when they are hugged by someone of the opposite sex, except for the other members of the zodiac).

It's actually a very good manga. If you wind up liking it, I also recommend Kitchen Princess as well.

Thanks for the info, Skye. When I was at Hastings tonight, I saw they had two big Fruits Basket hardbacks, comprised of two graphic novels per hardback, for $14.99 a piece (which is about $5 cheaper than buying them one volume at a time). I'll be picking up the first hardback next week.
Edit: Amazon.com is selling these Ultimate Edition hardbacks for $10 a piece. Think I'll get them there.

You're welcome, Jeansie.
Since Amazon has the hardbacks for $10, I might start picking them up as well. The manga still has 2 or 3 volumes until the end, but by the end of the year it should be completed.

I'm still on a King kick...I've been having a chance to read alot at work and I've just been reading all the King books my mom has gotten me over the years. Currently on Insomnia, though I picked up Wiseguy at the bookstore the other day so King will be getting a rest it looks like.

I just finished Eddie Guerrero's book which was quite hard to read, especially towards the end of the book as he had everything sorted out and was enjoying his life. I kept thinking about his death and it made me sad. It was great to read about how long he had been clean for and his renewed faith in God helping him through his problems. He loved his family so much too, it just broke my heart.
I've moved onto Adam Copeland On Edge by Adam Copeland.

Reread The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum and, again, the feeling stayed with me for days. Picked up Peter Straub's Ghost Story today and have started in on that, surprisingly it's about as chilling as everyone told me it was.

I recently picked up Battle Royale: Ultimate Edition Vol. 1 and while I'm excited to read it, I think I might have trouble because I've never read a manga before and the whole "backwards" deal might throw me off. I guess I'll have to just get used to it.

Did you actually start reading it from the last page? Most of them now have a warning at the end of the book to warn you you've started at the wrong end. :X
I had a bit of trouble when I started reading manga too... I first read Dragon Ball Z. It was mostly action panels, so it helped me learn how to follow it without getting me too confused.

When I first started, I didn't have any trouble because the book I started with -- Ranma 1/2 -- was published back in the stone ages, meaning the book was flipped so that it read like a traditional comic book. They still haven't re-published the series in the correct right-to-left format.
However, lately I've been reading Dragonball, Naruto and Rinqu, so I'm getting better at it. I think I'm going to order that first hardback of Fruits Basket sometime this week.
Jeans, is Dragonball any better than Dragonball Z? It seems like there's no plot in DBZ, just action panels.

I prefer Dragonball very much over Dragon Ball Z. Dragonball follows Goku when he's a young child and is mostly character and comedy driven, whereas Dragon Ball Z is about Goku's adult years and leans more in the direction of non-stop action. I think the first volume of the Dragonball graphic novel features a grand total of three fights, and they're all short and played for comedic effect.
Does Goku meet Piccolo the Demon King in the first volume of Dragonball? I know they're enemies in DB, but become friends in DBZ. (Go figure)

Demon King Piccolo and Piccolo Junior are two different characters. Goku meets Piccolo Junior for the first time about 1/3* of the way through Dragonball.
*In Japan, Dragonball is 42 volumes long. In America, it's split into two series -- Dragonball, which runs for 16 volumes, and Dragon Ball Z, which runs for 26 volumes (they did this so people who are familiar with the two animated shows, which were both based on the same manga, wouldn't be confused). The Dragonball portion of the story ends shortly after a teenage Goku's battle with Piccolo Junior, and the Dragon Ball Z portion picks up after Goku's first son is born.

Just got done reading Masquerade by Melissa De La Cruz. It's the second in a trilogy about rich teen vamps living in Manhattan. I'd recommend it & the first book, Blue Bloods if you're into vamp novels, it's just a bit tamer than some.
I just started You Slay Me by Katie McAllister. Good sci-fiish book about a woman who is Guardian to a portal to Hell and something about a dragon who takes a human form named Drake and he's really hot or something. It was recommended by a patron of mine.
