Simple enough question.
"Hellbound: Hellraiser II" gets my vote as also the best horror film ever made. Truely magnificent, there's a reason it's the most popular amongst the Hellraiser fanbase.
But let's see how it does here, in Friday the 13th country. :p

In order:
2 Hellbound
1 Hellraiser
6 Hellseeker
3 Hell on Earth
5 Inferno
4 Bloodline
8 Hellworld
7 Deader
Hellbound is perfect! The original also kicks ass, and I loved Hellseeker also(wich I thought would suck big time). I have only seen Hellworld and Deader once, they sucked big time!

I also chose Hellbound. It's a masterpiece, work-of-art, horror film.
Hellraiser comes in second.
I only like 1 and 2, and those are magnificent horror films.

I'm going with Hellbound. I've recently bought the first four films, and it was definitely my favorite. I haven't seen 7 or 8, and I only saw 5 and 6 one time on SciFi last year. I don't remember too much about them, but I know I wasn't crazy about them.
Here's my ranking of the four films I own:
Hellbound: Hellraiser 2
Hellraiser
Hellraiser: Bloodline
Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth

I have to go with Hellbound.
I remember this quote from the film: GREATNESS
"The Doctor... Is in!"
"What's on the Schedule today .... Ah yes, ... Evisceration"
Pity, he went out like a punk though.:side:
Bloodlines had a great quote also, even though the movie wasn't that great:
"There is a secret song at the center of the universe...."
"and its sound...."
"is like a razor through flesh."
Awesome:
Somebody should start a thread on greatest horror icon quotes:
Apologies to Jason, Michael, Leatherface:X

My favorite is the original. I didn't really like that quiet girl with the puzzles in Hellbound.

I said the original. It's a fairly faithful adaption to Barker's novella The Hellbound Heart, and it had some intense visuals to boot. The acting was top notch, the atmosphere was incredibly dark and disgusting, and the overall terror of this film was the highest of any of the films in this series. The CGI is very lame and dated, but this film scared me shitless as a kid and still holds up today.
Hellbound to me, was just as great as the original, if not a bit better. Both films run equal to me, and I also enjoy Hell on Earth. The first three were tremendous, everything after III is just shit to me.

I adore your writing David and you've done some of the finest HR scripts about and it's partly this that prompts me to ask a) what it is you hate so much about the later sequels and b) what the hell it is you see in Part 3?? :p
Seriously, a genuine wondering. Especially considering how Part 3's style is so against the first two and everything.

Darn it, You're right TNB !!!!
I was thinking of that scene in the end of Bloodlines,
where Pinhead says Something like
"The garden of Eden is a Garden of Flesh"
while they are up in the space station,
looking down at the earth.
Those films are Philosophically f'd up!

I voted for the original, but actually Hellraiser 1 and 2 are tied for me. I love them both equally. :)

It's an extremely close race between Hellraiser and Hellbound but in the long run I'll say my favourite is Hellbound... although Hellraiser III is a great fun slasher flick.
The original is the best for me. The suckuels don't even come close.

Best line in a horror film ever... needs to e more stuff like this. People becoming 'monsters' and loving it!

I love the first film. It is definitley a standalone classic.

Part 3 because it had a man with a camerahead. And a man with a CDhead. And cigarette-neck. And "shit, gasoline".

Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 are tied at the moment. :)
And i'm really surprised to see someone voted for Deader.
Actually the only Hellraiser sequel I like is Part 3, so I guess the first and third are kind of tied for me. I don't like any of the other sequels.

After a long, long mental debate that's been raging for years, I finally went with Hellraiser II. It's just... IMO, the greatest sequel ever made to a horror film. Ever. So I gotta give it to Hellbound, even if it feels like I'm letting down Clive.
Now, my second thing: though nowhere near the first two, I love Hell on Earth. I'm a little surprised that often hear more negative things about it than Bloodline (the series' worst, IMO) I do really enjoy it. And I will defend it. Atkins' script was still great, it had some of the best lines of the entire series, would have been nice to see more Kirsty, but Joey didn't suck. Also, we gotta remember that this wasn't Pinhead we were seeing, at least not the same one, this if anything made us appreciate regular Pinhead more. It showed why Pinhead needed his human element (Elliott). Without the man he was, the monster he is is nothing. When stripped of humanity, Pinhead becomes the thing he hates most: chaos. It's interesting to see a Pinhead so unhinged, so different, and Doug Bradley does a fantastic performance in the dual role.
I think I got into this argument once before, with Scarecrow, on the thread for my fan novel, but I wasn't really able to word it right until now.
Also, it's not a slasher movie. There's plenty of carnage, but, in fact, very little slash. Just my two cents, if you want to blame anything, blame the 90's.
Hellraiser and Hellbound as one long epic is the best Hellraiser film, IMO.

I agree. Hellraiser 1 & 2 make just as good a double feature as Halloween 1 & 2.

Definitely Hellbound followed by the first & third films.
I actually enjoyed Bloodline quite a bit too.
I think the first two films go perfectly hand-in-hand.

Hell On Earth, in my opinion, could have been made a decent film simply with better directing. It's very bland very typical Hollywood and missed all the beautiful lighting and dark forboding of the first two. And is FAR too yellow.
- Scarecrow
I dunno...for some reason I enjoyed Hell on Earth a lot.

I enjoy Hell on Earth as well. It's nowhere near as great as the first two, but it's fun to watch. They did stray from the whole horror/fantasy elements and went for a more straightforward slasher approach. I used to hate Hell on Earth, but have grown to like it over the years.

Wasn't Peter Atkins going to direct Hell on Earth?

Wasn't Peter Atkins going to direct Hell on Earth?
Nope, it was going to be Tony Randel, director of HR2, but the studio replaced him with someone they judged as having more experience...

I have to go with HELLBOUND:HELLRAISER II as my favorite entry to the franchise. With the discovery of more Lament Configerations ,Pinhead's backstory, and a journey to Hell itself. Combine that with Christopher Young's excellent score, you create on epic masterpiece of horror. HELLRAISER in itself is a great flick. But it's the story that just gets you there to HELLBOUND, the epic climax that concluded halfway through in HELLRAISER.

I do think Christopher Young's score for Hellbound may be the best musical score ever featured in a horror film. Bold words I know, but... damn.

I think Part 1 was the best, Hellbound was also great... after that the series took a dump- each new movie bing a larger pile of shit.

Well, here's a definite division. Favorite vs. Best Film. Many seem to confuse this amogst these threads. Hellbound: Hellraiser II is the superior film of the franchise. Perfect exploration of the mythology. It builds and expands on everything from the first film just right. My favorite film would probably be the first. I just enjoy the story centering on the human characters, and dealing with human evil. While the visual effects in the ending are horribly dated and cheap, I enjoy the exploration of these characters. Plus, you've got Andrew Robinson and Sean Chapman - all spades there.
I have reviewed every film except Inferno & Deader. But here's how I've rated them:
Hellraiser [10/10]
Hellbound: Hellraiser II [10/10]
Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth [4/10]
Hellraiser: Bloodline [4.5/10]
Hellraiser: Inferno [3.5/10]
Hellraiser: Hellseeker [8.5/10]
Hellraiser: Deader [9/10]
Hellraiser: Hellworld [3.5/10]
