First we lose Gans, now Roger Avary. Apparently, he's gone with Gans to work on Onimusha.

This is a badly translated bit of text from Cinema-France.com (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cinema-france.com%2Fnews4109_silent-hill-2-sans-roger-avary-.html&langpair=fr%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF8):

All goes quickly in the small world of cinematographic industry. Whereas Silent Hill 2 seems indeed logically on the way considering the first shutter brought back 100 million dollars to have cost 50 of them, Roger Avary seems not to want to take again his post of scenario writer. At least, the man who worked on Pulp Fiction, Killing Zoe or the Laws of attraction said that it would not return if Christophe Gans were not with the realization. And indeed, it could be extremely that French does not take again the orders, being largely occupied developing another adaptation of video game, that of Onimusha.

What I'm getting from this is that Avary isn't interested if Gans isn't involved.

Here's a more detailed account, from shocktillyoudrop.com (http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=804):

If the fog rolls in over the town of Silent Hill again, it will be without screenwriter Roger Avary. The scribe credited for Pulp Fiction, Killing Zoe and the Brett Easton Ellis adaptation The Rules of Attraction brought the video game world of the "Silent Hill" series to atmospheric life in last year's film directed by Christophe Gans.

But in talking with Shock on the Paramount lot about his upcoming collaboration with Neil Gaiman and Robert Zemeckis, Beowulf, he reveals, "I'm not gonna do Silent Hill 2," a pause, maybe to renege on that comment, then an assured, "If Christophe's not gonna do it, I'm not..."

Then that settles that. When we had spoken to producer Don Carmody, he hinted that Gans was similarly too busy with other work and didn't appear interested in following up his "Hill" film. This doesn't mean the sequel was dead, however, a new installment will progress without the director and writer.

On the one hand, I'm gutted. Gans and Avary seemed keen to work on the sequel six months ago, and they were both eager to polish what they considered flaws with the first film.

On the other hand, there's a sense of excitement (and more than a little fear) at what might become of the sequel with new people involved. I just hope whoever they tap has the same kind of respect for the source material as Avary and Gans.

I swear to god, my head will explode if Paul WS Anderson or Uwe Boll weasel their way into the director chair.

With Roger Avary and Christophe Gans pretty much out of the picture, it's hard to imagine where the franchise is going to go. However, there are rumors that Sony plans to turn the concept into a trilogy, and young actor Roby Lee, who is a fan of the video game series, has said that he's going to be auditioning for the film, and according to him, Roger Avary is in fact writing the script.

Source. (http://www.bluealien.org/node/279)

Inform8n: Now for the meat and potatoes of the interview that we'd like to talk about. You were attached to the second Silent Hill movie on the IMDB. can you tell us how exactly you were attached? What role were you in talks to star in?

Roby Lee: Ahh, Silent Hill, Imdb... gotta love them both... But honestly Jack, I love Silent Hill more! ha!

Ok so, here is the answer to put this all at rest. I was in the process of being looked at for an audition. Can't say, whom, what, where, when, why... by law, I am legally not allowed to give out any of that kind of information... But I have NOT yet auditioned for Silent Hill 2, all I know is that I am going to be set up with one. By this, there was a tape involved, someone found a video I did, and it was great because it just, went from there.

Anywho, next thing I know, I was attached to star in it... but that was because I told someone I shouldn't have, that I was going to be set up for an audition. So blah blah, things went from there, I have an Imdb page, people are doing some MAD talk on there... I knew it was going to happen. People do stuff like that all the damn time, I mean come on, it's the IMDB, largest movie database in history! Being a user of the message boards, I check on what people say... it's funny.

But no, I am not yet officially involved with Silent Hill 2. I haven't read any of the script, but I do know the plot line, I do know the characters, and I will say this as a promise to fans... you will NOT be disappointed. Even if I don't get the role, I still am always going to be a fan of this franchise. The movie is ironically, one of my favorites, so kudos to this movie and to the fans for being so supportive of it. I have all the confidence that I will do my best and who knows, maybe you guys will see me walking through the foggy town of Silent Hill, in 2009!

Also I'm just going to add, that plot outline on the Imdb, for SILENT HILL 2, is VERY false. Silent Hill 2, will not have a character named Brett Cartland and Kara, it is just complete BS someone would write that. Besides, that plot outline is horrible too!

Inform8n: I know you said you didn't get a look at the script... Do you know who is set to direct/produce/script this upcoming sequel? I know that the writer/director from the first Silent Hill Film (Christopher Gans and Roger Avery respectively)... any idea who's filling their shoes?

Roby Lee: I did not see the script, but I do know that Roger Avary is currently writing one, so I was told by Sony. And as far as producers and director, Don Carmoody is back on board, producing of course. And what fans wanna know, is who is directing I'm sure... fact is, I don't have a clue. They are keeping that VERY secret.

For example, they gave me a piece of paper telling me all the information about where I needed to go, and what I will be doing, reading, working with, etc etc... and they had the title, which I can't reveal as of now, the writer marked as Roger, and producer as Don, but unfortunately, the director name had been blacked out! So I have no clue if Gans is set to direct, or was set and quit, or what... we will know sometime early 2008, that's for sure...

As far as I know, Roger Avary is still the writer. But who knows, he may not be now! After all the online rumors and confirmations and whatnot, I don't know. When I was there, Roger was still writing, so I still believe it's him until I find out otherwise.

Inform8n: Excellent. Is there anything else that you can tell us about the film that you think fans of the series would like to know?

Roby Lee: YES! Um, well, no I can't say much. I don't really know more than anyone else, but I do know that the films plot outline will be based off ONE of the games, can't say which, and the character I'm set to read for, is a made up character... not in the game, but No worries fans... not the lead. The plot on the Imdb is shit. Not true, and very false!

Inform8n: I know you're not officially attached to the project but is there anything (as a fan of the game series) that you really hope makes it into the production of Silent Hill 2: the movie?

Roby Lee: Yes, I hope they will put Pyramid Head in film again... I would love to see the "main" character run from him once again; he shined in the first film for me! And if I'm in it, I sure hope I get a scene with that thing, so awesome! Also, I want to know more about Silent Hill's past... that was an interesting thing they did with SH1.

Inform8n: Well hopefully we'll all get some of the back-story in the new Konami game Silent Hill Origins that is due out in the near future for the Sony PSP. Speaking of Silent Hill, which was your favorite Silent Hill game? What was your favorite moment of the Silent Hill game series?

Roby Lee: Yes I sure hope so, I don't personally OWN a PSP, but I'm buying one, JUST for that game! Definitely, the third game. Everyone loves SH2 the game, but I just can't stop playing the third game! I love the second, it did open a lot for horror games these days, but the third is more of something I can relate to... heather is a teenager, as I am as well... she goes through crazy worlds and I love the film, Jacobs ladder, I see so many references in the third game from that movie. And my favorite scene/moment from the game series, was when James Sunderland is in the elevator in Sh2, and he is stuck in there, and a weird sort of Bob Barker voice comes on, wanting him to play a game, or answer questions, and you the player, has to remember and answer them to get inside a lockbox... that really scared the shit out of me!

I agree, Scarecrow. I know a lot of the devout Silent Hill fans thought it was lacking, but I thought it showed a lot of potential, and I hate that Gans isn't directing the sequel. I hope that whoever picks up where he left off realizes that what Gans was doing was more horror-fantasy than a flat out splatter flick.

I hope the wonderful atmosphere won't be lost in the sequel (PASTE & COPY the cinematography and set, don't change anything there !).

This article (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/36180) is mostly about how Heath Ledger's death caused a domino effect that knocked Onimusha out of its June start and into "unknown date" land.

But it does contain a tease that there's Silent Hill 2 news on the way

Now what about Christophe Gans? He's not the type of guy doing nothing between projects and his work on Onimusha is over until there's new shooting dates. He's still not involved in Silent Hill 2 as a director (we shall hear about this movie very soon...).

He didn't even write the first one, but I expect he'll be involved in helping shape the film's direction. Back when Onimusha was first announced, he was said to have moved on entirely, but now that Onimusha has been delayed we could see him involved on a creative level once more.

I think he and Avery could tema up for the script at the least.

That's not likely -- Avery is in some pretty serious legal trouble at the moment (and even if he wasn't, he made it said ages back he wouldn't be writing the sequel because Gans wasn't directing) and Gans has already made it pretty clear he intends to remain involved creatively but will not be writing/directing.

I didn't care for the original Silent Hill, but a sequel could easily be a lot better, if it's not overlong and doesn't use so much distractingly bad CGI.

Bret Easton Ellis has (unintentionally?) started the rumor (http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=10460) that Roger Avary will soon be writing and directing Silent Hill 2.

Avary hasn't said anything about it, but he was recently in Canada going through the warehouse full of the first movie's props.

Shit. With Cody posting, I thought something solid must have finally come to light. Oh well, this is better than nothing.

But wait, does this mean Avary got off free and clear from that drunk driving wreck?

Should a second chapter come along, Mitchell wants in, but not as the heroine. "I want to come back as a monster or some crazy creature," she smiles.

Dude, she's totally stolen my idea for a feature film based on Silent Hill 3. :X In that game, there's a creature that seems to follow around the main character (who is the little girl from the first game all grown up), but it never attacks her. It's just kind of there, watching over her. My idea was that Rose has become warped into a monstrous form after many years stuck in the misty world, but continues to try and protect her daughter.

Something really needs to happen with this.

I would love to see the gears finally moving on a SH2 film, and have it be very close to the source material. As an avid SH fan, I throughly enjoyed the first flick, but felt it needed to be even closer to the game.

I can look beyond what they had to do in order for the film to appeal to non-game followers, but still...if we're given a SH2 movie, please at least let it be separate from the first film, and follow a story from the games.

Just Jeans
05-12-2009, 12:40 AM
Without being a live-action clone of the game, I don't think the original film could have been much closer to the source material. Aside from Watchmen, Silent Hill is probably the most faithful adaptation I've ever seen.

I've drafted treatments for Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4 that stick intensely close to the games but also incorporate many elements from the original film and create a rather strong mythology. I wish I could find the file in which I wrote those treatments. I remember sharing them with Manwards back right after the first film hit theaters, and he seemed to think it was a good idea (dare I say, he even seemed a bit impressed with how well it all linked together). If I can find those treatments and flesh them out, I might post them in the fan fiction section.

Sean [The Wildcard]
05-12-2009, 03:42 PM
You should definitely post those sometime, Jeans. I would love to read em.

Hypothetically, if SH2 were to finally get a script written and greenlit, where would you like to see it go if it were to tie into the first film.

The only thing I can really say is to make it a straight up Silent Hill 2 adaptation, with a few minor tweaks in the story, to have it coincide with part 1's film.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fd/James_sunderland_mirror_t2.jpg

Have Chris (Sean Bean could return) receive a mysterious letter from his wife, Rose, who (as far as he knows) went missing in Silent Hill years ago, and the letter beckons him to come to Silent Hill. As Chris explores Silent Hill, he encounters others searching the town. It's very simple, keeping it as close to the SH2 video game as possible, even meeting a Maria-like character, a woman who strongly resembles Rose, but with a more provocative outfit and personality. Obviously, so we can get the lovely Radha Mitchell back.

Basically, just take the overall plot points of SH2 (game), change a few character names around, and their you have it. It would be perfect.

Of course, they'd have to figure something out when it comes to the big reveal that James killed Mary in the game.

And of course...they need to get into the deep Psychosis of the how the creatures relate to the main protagonist. Something that the games heavily and deeply relied on, such as Pyramid Head, Abstract Daddy, Flesh Lips/Lustful Lips, and the Mannequins.

Just Jeans

The very basic idea I had for Silent Hill 2 stuck pretty close to the second game -- James Sunderland was the main character -- but it ties into the first film, as well as the fourth game. The treatment begins with James living in South Ashfield Heights (Henry Townshend is his neighbor and friend, Eileen Galvin and Cynthia Velázquez both appear briefly in the first act) and by the second act the action has moved to Silent Hill. James has recieved a letter from his dead wife, Mary, and is desperate to find her.

Meanwhile, back at South Ashfield Heights, Frank Sunderland -- the superintendent and James' father -- has contacted his old friend Douglas Cartland and asked him to go to Silent Hill and look for James. This is after Frank and Henry go into James' apartment and find an endless string of handwritten letters from Mary plastered all over the walls like wallpaper, all of which beg for James to go to Silent Hill.

Okay... I really wanted to keep typing, but it seems we're about to leave to see Star Trek. But suffice it to say, the rest of this treatment ties just as tightly in with Silent Hill 3 and The Room -- I wanted to introduce a lot of the characters and situations that would appear throughout the rest of the series, and some of this stuff is just so easy (like the stuff with Douglas, as he says in the third game that the last time he went to Silent Hill was on a missing person's case, and it's also pretty easy working James into the South Ashfield Heights setting, because The Room tells us that his father Frank is the super at the apartment complex, and there's documents in the game that suggest James went missing and never returned). I haven't even gotten to the stuff that ties this to the first Silent Hill film yet. :X

I'll post the rest after we see Star Trek if you like.

Apparently my agent's voicemail isn't working (he hasn't received any calls from Hadida regarding SH2). I think we can probably switch off the rumor mill.

The first Silent Hill film was so damn bad, that a sequel better be like 100x better. I have fond memories of the original Silent Hill on Playstation 1, which is still to this day THE most horrifying video game ever made. I remember the enviornments of being outside, the school, the hospital. It was terrifying. If they were to base their script off of the original Silent Hill game and xerox it, it would have been a great horror film, but they decided to go Salem Witch Trial meets Hellraiser and totally ruin it.

The film they release a few years ago was NOT Silent Hill. If you want Silent Hill, you need to go on eBay or Amazon and get yourself a nice used copy of the original PS1 game, because THAT is Silent Hill.

I really can't fathom why you don't think it's Silent Hill, Rich. It's as close to the game as any game adaptation that's ever been made.

Duo make a return to 'Silent Hill' (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3ia88ac756513e0fd9c64722a77d02496f)

Roger Avary and Samuel Hadida of Davis Films are climbing back up "Silent Hill."

The screenwriter and producer have signed on for a sequel to their 2006 video game adaptation.

The original, based on the Konami game, centered on a woman who travels to a desolate town to seek help for her ailing daughter only to find supernatural occurrences taking place there.

Davis Films aims to shoot the movie next year after "Resident Evil 4," which it's now prepping.

TriStar released the original "Silent Hill," which earned $47 million domestically; the label has not confirmed involvement on the follow-up.

Silent Hill 2 on the Block (http://movies.ign.com/articles/113/1131760p1.html)

Silent Hill 2 is looking for buyers. Lionsgate is at this week's American Film Market where the game-to-film sequel is one of the projects the company is showcasing there, according to ScreenDaily.

According to their official site, the AFM is an annual film industry event where more than 7,000 industry leaders converge in Santa Monica for eight days of deal-making, screenings, premieres, networking and more. Unlike a film festival, the AFM is a marketplace where production and distribution deals are closed. In just eight days, more than $800 million in deals will be sealed -- on both completed films and those that haven't started shooting yet -- making the AFM the must-attend industry event.

Davis Films, who produced the 2006 Silent Hill movie, will also produce the sequel. Oscar-winning screenwriter Roger Avary, who was released from prison last month (http://bigmouthery.blogspot.com/2010/07/bigmouthery-exclusive-oscar-winning.html) following a fatal car accident he was involved in, is scripting the picture. No word yet on who will direct it.

Silent Hill 2 Director Found (http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/afmnews.php?id=17091)

Still on the American Film Market news beat, Shock has learned that Michael J. Bassett is sitting in the director's chair on Silent Hill 2.

Bassett directed Death Watch as well as Solomon Kane, which stirred up excitement from those who saw it on the film festival circuit.

The sequel will be called Silent Hill: Revelations and is being geared for 3D. It focuses on a protagonist named Heather Mason who, on the eve of her 18th birthday, is plagued by nightmares and now has to investigate the disappearance of her father. Somehow it all ties into Silent Hill, of course.

Press release (http://shocktillyoudrop.com/news/afmnews.php?id=17115)

Fresh off their $270M+ box office sensation Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D, producers Samuel Hadida and Don Carmody have re-teamed to create Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, which is currently in pre-production. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D will also reunite Davis Films producer Hadida with Michael J. Bassett (Deathwatch, Solomon Kane), who will direct the 3D film on location this winter in the Toronto area. International sales are being handled by Lionsgate at the upcoming AFM.

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, based on the acclaimed survival horror videogame franchise by KONAMI , is a sequel to Hadida and Carmody’s earlier collaboration, Christophe Gans’ Silent Hill. For years, Heather Mason and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she's not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.

Hadida said: “We have high expectations for this continuation of the franchise with our reunited Silent Hill production team. Michael was our natural choice to write and direct. He understands the genre, is passionate about the Silent Hill franchise, and will bring his considerable action picture skills to a fresh and thrilling insight of the Silent Hill 3D world.”

Hadida noted further, “We are especially excited about our renewed collaboration with KONAMI. KONAMI’S sustained success with the seven video games published to date is unique testament to the ongoing appeal of this property”.

Carmody added: “Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D, Paranormal Activity 2, and Saw 3D show that global audiences have a continued thirst for the horror action genre. Silent Hill, like Resident Evil before it, is a beloved videogame, now becomes a successful film franchise that both encompasses and transcends the game world.”

“We are pleased to partner with Samuel and Don again to bring a new Silent Hill experience to the silver screen.” Said Careen Yapp, Vice President of KONAMI . Just as the franchise has evolved, we’re confident Silent Hill Revelation 3D will bring a new Silent Hill story that is both frightening and engaging. Their sensitivity to our loyal, avid, global community of fans will make for an amazing 3D experience!”

Hadida and Carmody most recently produced Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D starring Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, and Wentworth Miller. Past collaborations include Resident Evil: Apocalypse.

Robert E. Howard’s Solomon Kane marked screenwriter and director Michael J. Bassett’s last feature film. He made his debut with Deathwatch, an atmospheric horror movie set in the trenches of World War I which starred Jamie Bell and Andy Serkis.

Bassett Talks (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=71563)

A week ago, it was announced that Michael J. Bassett (Deathwatch, Solomon Kane) will write and direct Silent Hill: Revelation 3D. Bassett has now also commented about the news on his Blog (http://michaeljbassett.wordpress.com/2010/11/05/welcome-back-to-silent-hill/).

"Finally, it's been announced and I can say officially what I've been eager to share with you all for a little while now; I've written and am going to be directing the new Silent Hill movie," Bassett stated.

He added: "I love the games and was a huge admirer of the first film. Especially how Christophe Gans and his team managed to capture the look and feel of the world. I say, if it ain't broke don't fix it, so I'm bringing back as many of that core creative team as I can – but I'm probably going to bring just a little more darkness and fear into the mix as well. I love the complex mythology and psychological twists that Konami created so will do my best honour that aspect too."

Bassett said that he is "determined to deliver a film that builds on the qualities of the first film and draws on the best aspects of the games whilst giving the audience more nuanced characters, a compelling story and introducing some terrifying new monsters (as well as bringing back a few favourites) and, most important of all… just scaring the sh*t out of everyone."

Lohman looks just like the girl from Silent Hill 3, so it's good casting in that regards at least.

I've spent over a decade with Allison Mack (http://www.nresimleri.com/photo/Allison-Mack57156.jpg) in my head as the ideal casting choice for a Silent Hill 3 adaptation, so apart from Ferland, it's hard to see anyone else in the role. But I'm totally on board for this flick, so I'll give Lohman the ol' college try.

With Lohman in the film, you can pretty count on Ferland not coming back -- Lohman is playing her character from the original film, who has been renamed by her father to protect her from the people in Silent Hill. Which is why Bean really needs to come back, to tie these things together.

That is unless there have been major changes from the game plot, but that description gives the impression that this new cat is remaining pretty faithful to what happens in the first and third games (and by proxy, what happened in the first movie).
ADDED:
Incidentally, the Shock Til You Drop article has now removed the information about Lohman. Ryan says in the comments that he removed her name after discovering she had a baby less than two weeks ago.

Oh, I didn't know she'd be playing the same character from the first one. I don't really pay attention to video game stories when I play them, so. :X
ADDED:
Okay, it's definitely not Lohman, it's Adelaide Clemens. ...I think I like her, physically speaking. She looks a lot like Heather. If she can act, I'd say that's good casting.

Also:

According to Bloody Disgusting, who broke the casting news earlier, Sean Bean is in talks to return.

Fucking win.

That's like only half a win considering the source. ;)

Ah, yeah. That really dumps a cigarette butt in the tiger blood-filled chalice of win.

Still, fingers crossed. :D

Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean, and Deborah Kara Unger are all back for the sequel (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=75288).

Picture proof of Mitchell at the link.

Holy fuck, that's exciting. I dunno what they'll be doing with Mitchell's character, but this is sounding more and more like the plot outline I wrote up for a sequel way back in 2006 (which, as I recall, Manwards quite liked!)

That picture is great. Even Heather's costume is just about perfect.

A mediocre day has had some sunlight shone upon it. :) Thanks, fellas.

Seriously. So excited. I didn't expect there to be such a strong sense of continuity between films. Gonna be fun on a bun!

I'm really surprised they got all of them to come back...really didn't expect it, but now I'm actually looking forward to this quite a bit. The first movie grew on me big time.

There's been no mention of Douglas Cartland (http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l6hn4pyZuY1qbjyyi.png) yet, so I guess we can assume he's been cut from the film's storyline. If that's the case then it's a shame, because his interactions with Heather were more-or-less the backbone of the game's plot (she spends the majority of the game looking for her father -- the protagonist from the first game -- so they have very little screen time together).

Plus, I just really liked Douglas. In a perfect world, Donald Sutherland would have played him in a film produced 10 years ago (back when Allison Mack was still the right age to play Heather, naturally). If he is in the film, I wonder who they cast to play him?

After everything that has been said about this films production so far....THAT PICTURE has finally pumped me up for this. :D

Carrie-Anne Moss and Malcolm McDowell have joined the cast (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=76033), playing Claudia and Leonard Wolf.

I can't believe Jeans had no comment on that casting news. I think the link even had a new picture in it...

Here's some carnival set pics (http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/articlenews.php?id=18734).

I dunno how I missed that casting news. Was busy working on the show, I guess. :X

That's some pretty damn cool casting. McDowell would have made a good Douglas, actually. I don't think Leonard Wolf is ever seen in human form in the game, so it'll be sort of neat to see him here.

That carnival set is great. It's amazing how close this one is sticking to the source material. I'm glad the trend continues for this franchise.

She looks surprisingly game-accurate in that outfit. And I'm glad they've maintained the aesthetic from the original film instead of trying to reinvent it.

Really can't wait for this. Saw the first one again with a friend today who has never seen it, and he liked it, so I hope we can go see the sequel together when it comes out.

Somehow managed to miss this picture (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5149/5631308480_968f9d3e09_b.jpg) when it hit the net last year. Glad to see ye olde red pyramid is back to cause havoc.

As much as I love good ol' Pyramid Head and his rape-y ways...I feel he has no reason to be in this. Yes, I am one of those fans who holds true to the definitive reasons for his existence from the game: A reflection/part of James' psyche in Silent Hill 2.

So, unless this film wants to go really psychologically deep on me, I feel he has no reason to be in the film other than "HEY, LOOK WHO IT IS!"

And yes...I felt the same way about his appearance in the first film, as well as his involvement in SH: Homecoming.

Just Jeans

I hold true to that interpretation of his existence within the games as well, and also found it odd to see him in Homecoming.

But there is a psychological reason for him to be in the films, Gans just shifted the focus. The Red Pyramid is the physical manifestation of Alessa's rage (which is why he rips that woman in half after she attacks Dahlia, and why the original ending had three of them killing the cult). Within the context of the films, it makes sense for him to turn up again so long as Alessa and Dahlia are involved in the plot.

This interpretation is even obliquely worked into Silent Hill Origins: there is a portrait of the Red Pyramid hanging in Dahlia and Alessa's home, where the girl would have seen him every day of her life.
