One of my all-time favorite shows ever. Robert Stack is a God. They should bring this show back with a new host. Does this still run on Lifetime?
The opening credit always creeped me out. Actually, most of the stories they told creeped me out even if they had a happy ending.

A huge part of my childhood. I watched this religiously. I liked the stories about ghosts & UFOs the best.
RIP Robert Stack, a true legend.
Robert Stack was perfect for this show.

I still can't watch Unsolved Mysteries alone. From the opening theme song to the stories told, it just creeps me out too much. Their feature on Big Foot still gives me the creeps just thinking about it.
Though it did crack me up that they used to air it on Lifetime, Television for Women. The Golden Girls, Designing Women, made-for-TV movies made for and/or about women, and Unsolved Mysteries. One of these things isn't like the other...

That show was way too scary for lifetime. Because the way how they re-enacted the murder/mystery was always so damn realistic it always made me wonder. Like the kidnapping, rapes and murders..... it was too realistic! If there wasn't an update after it, that would bother me for a few hours after and I would honestly wondered what the hell happened to that boy, girl, man/woman.
Also, the supernatural stories/mysteries were pretty cool too

I absolutely miss this show. My grandfather introduced me to this show in the 1990's when I was probably around 10 years of age. I remember being terrified of the opening theme, and chills sent through my body each time an episode would showcase supernatural events or composite sketches of wanted fugitives. Unsolved Mysteries had it all, everything from legends, lost treasures, supernatural occurrences, UFO sightings, and assisted with the arrests of hundreds of wanted fugitives/criminals and reunited families and lost loved ones.
I think the story originally started as just a special around 1987, first hosted by Raymond Burr, then Karl Malden, and I think Richard Jaeckel hosted an episode before Robert Stack took the helm full time for over 15 years. Although Stack starred as Elliot Ness in "The Untouchables", received an Oscar nomination for "Written on the Wind" and other films such as "Airplane!", this show is what he is known for, and just played himself. Nobody does it better than Stack. I knew after his death in 2003, the show would be gone for good, although there has been some discussion, if not rumors of bringing the show back with a new host.
The Unsolved Mysteries stories that stick in my head include:
- The 1988 Halloween special which had stories about supernatural hauntings. They explored the helm of the Queen Mary and went to a "real" haunted house in Horicon Wisconsin. This one really terrified me as a kid!
- The disappearance and murder of Kurt Sova, an Ohio high school student who went to a party, and was found mysteriously murdered two days later. Although he was seen in the span of those two days, and then his deceased body apparently moved. His killer was never apprehended.
- The 1990 murder of Florida resident Beverly McGowan, who came in contact with a mysterious British woman named Alice, who took her identity. Several days later, McGowan's body was found in a canal bank. Her hands hacked off, her head decapitated and her abdomen cut open to remove a tattoo. It turns out that Alice was really a mysterious con-artist and master of disguise, Elaine Parent who was on the run until 2002, when she committed suicide before being apprehended.
- The Delaware Hitchhiker Case. A black hitchhiker threatened a truck driver in the early morning hours, and somehow managed to find his way to the trucker's mother's house and murdered her. Over 15 years nearly passed before, the hitchhiker was found and arrested, this was after Unsolved Mysteries was cancelled.
- An elderly man near Dallas Texas is beaten and murdered by a stalky looking male Caucasian with corn rows. He was never arrested.
This was truly a remarkable TV show.

One of my favorites although it could never freak me out like In Search Of.
My favorite episodes were the ones of the Son of Sam conspiracy, Zodiac, the Hudson Valley UFO sightings, the School Pictures murders, the bank manager who steals half a million and disappears, and D.B (aka Dan) Cooper. There was also an eerie episode about a man brutally murdered after being robbed at the ATM. The camera in the ATM caught a grainy, shadowy picture of the killer who was never caught.

When Sci-Fi did their "In Search Of", it was pretty scarifying too... because host Mitch Pileggi seemed majorly pissed. I kept worrying that he was gonna jump out of the television and kick my ass.
The ironic thing is... I had NOT seen "Shocker" yet... in which Pileggi does go around jumping out of TVs.

I found Sci Fi's In Search Of to be absolutely putrid. Basically in name only and lacking everything that made the original creepy.

BIG NEWS, FELLOW UNSOLVED MYSTERIES FANS!!!
Spike Gets a Modernized Oldie
Unsolved Mysteries gets a manly makeover
By Paige Albiniak -- Broadcasting & Cable
Everything old is new again. Spike TV has picked up a repackaged, refreshed version of television classic Unsolved Mysteries that the male-focused cable network will start airing in fall 2008.
“We were looking for a great performer for early fringe,” says Rob Friedman, the network’s senior vice president of programming. “HBO came in and pitched us the newly re-edited Unsolved Mysteries. There are more stories per hour, more male-oriented stories, new graphics and a new host.”
Last June, HBO Television Distribution chiefs Scott Carlin and Tom Cerio started shopping an updated version of the 20-year-old show to cable networks. The sale offers a glimpse into the lengths owners of older syndicated fare are willing to go to polish and sell their library of content, generating a new income stream for dormant properties. The show format offers a unique chance to update and refresh, unlike other syndicated fare.
Friedman says the show is a “great a lead-in to CBS’ off-network CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and for many of our movies.” Spike paid an estimated $1.6 million per episode for CSI back in 2002. The refurbished edition of Unsolved Mysteries—which aired in originals on NBC from 1987 to 1997, CBS from 1997 to 1999 and Lifetime from 2001 to 2002—likely goes for a more reasonable $100,000 per episode cash license fee, according to industry estimates.
The deal should prove profitable for all participants, with Spike paying a fair price; the show’s production company, Cosgrove/Meurer Productions, continuing to make money on a show that by all rights should be retired by now; and HBO taking a cut.
“The show wouldn’t be spinning off anything just lying in the vault,” says one syndication analyst. “Right now, whatever the numbers are, it’s making money.”
With 900 hours of footage and 230 episodes in the can, Cosgrove/Meurer has plenty to choose from as it whittles the show down to 175 episodes.
To give the series a faster, more modern feel, the revamped shows will include five stories per episode, up from the original four. The show’s graphics are being swapped out for computer-generated versions, and the unsolved stories are being updated with new information.
“We asked Bob Cosgrove and Terry Meurer if they would consider the possibility of doing an off-the-body renovation, which is when you literally take the car off the body and replace virtually everything or upgrade everything to practically new condition,” Carlin says. “So we’re adding new music, finding a new host, and enhancing the video. We’re using all the editing bells and whistles that are available to post-production now. We thought: If we can find a way to keep all those stories intact, we may be able to regenerate this show and make it brand-new again.”
At some point, Cosgrove/Meurer also might produce new episodes for Spike, Carlin said.
Perhaps most importantly, Spike gets to cast its own host for the show, a role that the late Robert Stack made his own. Actor Clancy Brown (Carnivale, Lost) hosted HBO’s pilot, but Brown is not available to host any further episodes. Friedman says a decision will be made soon from a short list of candidates.
Even though the show has aired in repeats on Lifetime since 1993, both Carlin and Friedman think it stands to gain a new audience on Spike TV.
“The primary audience on Lifetime is women 25 and 35-plus. The audience on Spike is predominantly comprised of younger males age 18 to 34,” Carlin says. “They are too young to remember the show on broadcast, and there have never been a lot of guys watching programs on Lifetime.”
Carlin adds, “It’s really an opportunity for Spike to take an established brand and make it feel truly like a first-run show.”
----------------------------------------
As awesome as this news is, I'm a bit hesitant on a few things...
1. New Music - Are they out of their minds? The original theme was PERFECT. Quite frankly, if I were in a dark alley, and that music started playing, I would cower to the ground in tears. It's true. Still one of the all time great TV themes. I guess Spike knows what they're doing, but probably not.
2. More Stories Per Hour - Granted, only one more, but really what this means is that they will have to edit some things...possibly vital information...out of older stories to make room for one more per hour. I thought the old shows were perfectly balanced: Two stories the first half hour, two stories the last half hour.
3. Male-Oriented Stories - I'm a male, and yeah, I should be celebrating this, and yeah I know Spike-TV is a male-oriented network, but still...there are plenty of segments that may not be "male-oriented" that are worth revisiting. Does this mean we won't get any of the segments where females are the subject (abducted/murdered/conned)? Of course, if this means no more segments devoted to "Lost Loves", then I'm 100% fine with that. That was never my favorite part of the show.
4. New Host - Who can they get to replace Robert Stack? Seriously. Dennis Farina has been mentioned, and while he's cool...I just don't know. They need someone with a more distinctive, ominous voice.
5. The Intent - I hope Spike-TV isn't going to just edit the stories as a "oh cool!" type of show. The network's target demographic is 18-34 year olds, and this worries me. Much of this demographic has never seen the show. I hope they will remember the original intent behind the show...to SOLVE MYSTERIES. Remember, when this show debuted, there was no such thing as America's Most Wanted. Unsolved Mysteries was the sole tool of law enforcement to get difficult and cold cases profiled on a nationwide program in order to solicit tips. Over the years, the show was extremely successful in this area. I hope the guys giving it a makeover don't lose sight of this, in favor of a more "OMG TOTALLY XTREME UNSOLVED MYSTERIES!!!" type of tone.
But, at the end of the day, despite my concerns...I am glad the show is coming back on the air in some form or another.
Maybe it will lead to a much more comprehensive DVD release.

The new Unsolved Mysteries programs will consist of re-creations of the events, along with interviews with the subjects, participants and authorities, documentary footage and news footage. Entirely new graphics, special effects, music and title sequences were created for the Spike broadcasts, along with new narration and host stand-ups by Dennis Farina. The show will air Monday-Friday from 5pm-7pm starting Monday, October 13 and Sundays from 1pm-6pm!

According to Broadcasting & Cable, HBO Distribution plans to bring back Unsolved Mysteries when the cable channel Lifetime contract expires in 2008. The show will feature a new set, same music, recaps on old cases, as well as new cases, and a new host. The show will be on SpikeTV, in October 2008, for 5 years, and 175 episodes, featuring the same theme music and hosted by actor Dennis Farina.
Unsolved Mysteries will relaunch on Monday, October 13, at 5 p.m., and 6 p.m., ET Time
Spike TV is updating the long-running “Unsolved Mysteries” franchise by creating a new collection 175 re-edited episodes hosted by acclaimed television and film actor Dennis Farina. The new episodes, focusing on more of the dangerous and action-oriented cases, will also be available on Spike’s web site, and mobile outlets.
Spike’s TV’s “Unsolved Mysteries,” featuring real-life cases of unsolved crimes, missing persons and unexplained paranormal phenomena begins its five year run on Spike TV in October, 2008. Each one-hour episode will feature five stories re-enacted by professional actors, plus brand new show wraps and updates on past stories. The series will be stripped weekday afternoons.
That's pretty sweet that they're bringing it back.
I used to watch it all the time back in the day...it was the only thing I watched on Lifetime...other than the Golden Girls.:p

They definately need someone who can make the same kind of impact that Stack had as host. That's why I wasn't fond of the revival of "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" a few years back. Dean Cain couldn't beat Jack Palance's run as host.

Odd that they didn't include the Chupacabra segment, as it was truly great. Another "famous person" story they didn't include was the one on Kurt Cobain, where they allege that his death may have been murder. Interesting stuff. It's still a good set, though, until a more comprehensive release is made available someday (if ever).

Has anyone else noticed the new Unsolved Mysteries are just updated old cases?Anyone know why theres no current cases mixed in?

Much cheaper to repackage existing segments than to film new ones would be my guess.

I can understand old unsolved cases, but yeah new ones would be nice.
Though would a new Unsolved Mysteries work today? Some of the old "mysteries" seemed like family members not willing to deal with obvious suicides, Police mistakes (would police today be willing to have their mistakes aired? Probably not), Mass hallucinations and hysteria, and Hoaxes.

I would think it would work today.

I watch it on Lifetime every day when I work out after work. It's surprising how well the segments still hold up even despite being edited down for time and with a new narrator/host. It's not that Dennis Farina is bad. On the contrary, he's quite good. He just doesn't have that morose, creepy factor that Robert Stack's voice brought to the segments.
The new music pretty much sucks, though.

The old creepy music made the atmosphere of the show so much more. SO much more.

Dennis Farina is fine. No Robert Stacker, but lets be honest..who can be? Besides, like stated it's hard to make this show even remotely spook with Farina as host because of the crappy music.
I would think it would work today.
I hope so too. I wished they'd give Farina new material to work with instead, of re-airing same cases. Especially, solved ones. Understandable to air cases that are still unsolved.

I agree CountProphet and the music isnt creepy at all like the old.

I've been watching these every afternoon on Lifetime while I'm in the fitness room after work. They're growing on me. The content, is mostly the same segments from years earlier. While Farina is no Stack, the show is still as engaging and entertaining as ever. Hopefully, they'll continue to produce new episodes.

Do they even still make these since i only see 2008 at the ends of each episode?

I hadn't really paid much attention before, but during the opening segment before the credits begin (when Farina summarizes the stories the show is about to profile) the music features a faint section of the original Unsolved Mysteries theme. Nice, if too subtle, nod to a great piece of television music.

It appears they maaaaaay be ramping up for brand new segments and episodes.
The following has now appeared at the top of Unsolved.com (http://www.unsolved.com/) at some point in the last couple of months, as I am positive it was not there the last time I checked the site...

I'd love to see the show continue. Farina has grown on me, but Robert Stack is definitely sorely missed.
For what it's worth... I'm gonna e-mail them a suggestion about the Keddie/Cabin 28 Murders and the Texarkana Phantom. How they neglected to cover these two famous cases is truly an unsolved mystery in itself.

Most likely Lifetime, as that's where the show is currently being aired. The website lists SpikeTV, but I've not seen it on Spike in a long, long time. I live in the Eastern Time Zone, and it comes on every afternoon at 5pm on Lifetime... and is sometimes followed by a second episode back to back.
