Elton John @ GnR doing Bohemian Rhapsody

Mary J Blige joining U2 for ONE

U2 doing Instant Karma

John Cash doing NIN's Hurt

Red Hot Chili Peppers covering Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" and Nirvana's cover of "Plateau" are the two that instantly come to mind when I think of covers... with Van Halen's version of The Kinks "You Really Got Me" as a distant 3rd.

-just about every cover that Van Halen did, except that one they did with Sammy on their OU812 album, great album, bad song

-Guns N' Roses' "Live and Let Die"

-Poison had some great covers on their latest cover album, one specifically is "Little Willy" and they also did a great cover of "Your Mama Don't Dance" for their second album

-Def Leppard's "Action" and "She's Too Tough"...I'm actually not sure to concider "She's Too Tough" a cover, cause Joe Elliott wrote it, just he let Helix record it, and later Def Leppard recorded it as well

-Whitesnake's "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City"

-Krokus has some great covers such as "School's Out", "Ballroom Blitz", "American Woman" and Stayed Awake All Night"

Those three are great!

Van Halen's version blows The Kinks away.

Don Henley is someone who these "ataris" people will never match their success with :p

Judas Priest also has some great covers, Diamonds and Rust (not that stupid acoustic version they consistently play now) and Green Manalishi are their best covers, though they've gone a few other good ones

Most of my favorite covers have already been mentioned here. I can't believe I'm saying this, but one of my favorite covers ever is by a freakin emo band:

Quietdrive - Time after Time (Cyndi Lauper, not Ozzy)

sCabbOy

I've always wondered why covering another band's song has not only been embraced by fans but wanted by fans. However, a good majority of fans loathe remakes of movies?

D-Lo
07-20-2007, 12:36 AM
Maybe hardcore movie fans feel a closer connection to the movie. A movie does have the visual aspect and more of a story than an ablum. I get just as pissed to hear a favorite song murdered though.

BlakeTyner
07-20-2007, 12:41 AM
Nirvana - "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"

I'll second The Ataris version of "Boys of Summer," because I enjoy it - not as much as Henley's original, but almost.

George Strait's "Red River Valley," "My Life's Been Grand," "Folsom Prison Blues," and "Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa" are great.

I don't care for Fred Durst, but his version of "Behind Blue Eyes" was pretty good.

DavidDunn
07-20-2007, 12:47 AM
I agree with that. Fred Durst isn't exactly the best at writing his own songs (Rollin', for example), but his cover of Behind Blue Eyes was awesome.

For me, it's:
One - Dokken
Crazy Train - Skid Row and Zakk Wylde
I also liked the cover of "Time of the Season" on the Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack. I don't fully remember who did it, though.

BlakeTyner

The Dream Master
07-20-2007, 01:37 AM
Smashing Pumpkins, "Dancing in the Moonlight"
Jimi Hendrix, "All Along the Watchtower"

As for song covers vs. remakes, I feel like the former is much different animal from the original. Maybe because a song is a smaller piece of work, perhaps? I don't know. It's actually a good question. I hate to see one of my favorite songs be butchered, don't get me wrong--but for some reason, it doesn't bother me as much as when a film gets remade.

T.M.

Yeah, i did.

Don Henley tried to stop them from playing his song because of it. The band explained why they wore the t-shirts: it's because a lot of their fans think that it is a song that The Ataris wrote.

Another fan of Smashing Pumpkin's cover of Landslide. Just so achingly beautiful.

How about the Nativity in Black albums? Two tributes to Black Sabbath with some awesome covers. Bruce Dickinson injecting even more metal into Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Primus and Ozzy tearing up NIB, Sepultura thrashing through Symptom of the Universe and more.

Slayer has awesome covers of Inna A Gadda Da Vida and Born to Be Wild.

Paradise Lost did a great cover of Sisters of Mercy's Walk Away.

Metallica of course always does great with covers, with Astronomy being my favorite (James's vocals are just awesome in that one).

Oh, and there is a great metal tribute to Abba out there.

And Cannibal Corpse shredding Sabbath's Zero the Hero.

I could go on for days with this one.:D

One of my all-time favorites is Exhorder's cover of Black Sabbath's Into the Void.

The cover of "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Gus, featured in Scream.
"Sweet Child O'mine," Taken by Trees is awesome and gave me chills when I heard it in the "Last House on the Left" remakes trailer.
Billy Idol does a hellacious cover of "Don't You Forget about Me" on his greatest hits album.
I really dig several of the covers that have been done on Glee.
Here is a new question for you guys, in your opinion, covers that supersede the orginal?
For me, Shinedown's "Simple Man, " give s me chills. Blows away the Skynard version. Everytime I have seen it live, they always dedicate it to Dime Bag Darrel from Pantera. That especially hits home for me because I had tickets to the Damage Plan concert the night he got shot, but was unable to go.

My ole lady showed me the cast from that show "Glee" singing Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" since I've been on a Journey kick lately. I have to admit, it didn't send me into a fiery rage. It was adequate.

GnR's "Live and Let Die"

And Def Leppard does a pretty awesome version of "Rock On".

The worst cover ever... Celine Dion butchering AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long".
ADDED:
Anybody pick up Poison'd by Poison? It's a newer CD with nothing but covers of classic rock songs. It's pretty awesome, if you're a fan.

So, anyone know where I can find "Money" by Velvet Revolver (Pink Floyd cover)? It was featured in The Italian Job, but wasn't on the official soundtrack and it was never released on any of VR's albums. I could've sworn I heard it on the radio back in the day. Why was it never made a single?

Neither Amazon nor iTunes have it. Would love to find it sometime.

Wes!

I am 99% sure I have a copy of that song floating around. You want a copy of it? Well, I need a Ken Walsh fix. Want to make a deal?

I thought these guys did chanting or religious songs but just realized they do covers for classic rock, heavy metal, current songs etc. Interesting twist on good songs.
