It's an interesting idea, but the pictures are freaking me out. But then again, dead bodies freak me out in general.

I wouldn't have touched him, though. I freak out when people lean on a dead person's casket because I'm afraid it'll fall over, so I can't imagine watching people hugging and kissing and touching a standing dead body.

It's not so weird, it was a common practice for along time among the Quakers, or at least a subsect of the Quakers. They believed that they should meet their maker on their feet. So the casket was buried vertically, instead of laying it down.

I actually had a distant ancestor who was buried this way, but they relocated the cemetery...and when they did they laid the coffin down.


Add...ok, so after reading the article I have to say that is pretty odd indeed...not at all what I thought it was...

I think it is kind of creepy. Those pictures give me the willies.
I hate Wakes.
I remember when I was four and went to my grandpa's wake.
I reached out and grabbed his hand and it was cold. Fucked me up for awhile.
25 years later and I still don't like to see dead bodies dressed up.
