I seem to remember this being a popular thread so back it comes!

I've been itching to get back to this game (my 360 is being repaired by microsoft) and complete the survival achievements.

People have raved about this game and I can't put my finger on why... it's just a load of fun.

I love how it captures the romero-esque zombie atmosphere- they're slow, they're dumb and you can avoid them easily... so long as you pay attention and don't stay still too long... And of course, the humans are your biggest threat.

If I have one criticism (and no, it's not the save system- it works perfectly fine. Not a single problem for those of us who like to play our games rather than save every three seconds) it's that the NPC's are really dumb. And I mean really dumb.

Now, who's got DR2 info?

Still up in the air but if it does happen it will be on 360only.
And yea the NPC are fucking dumber then a bag of chisles. I've had to kill off surviviors that didn't follow me up.

If you get that mind control book from the movie theater (when you kill the cult leader) your survivors become conisderably more cooperative.

A problem I always had was in my penchant for violence I usually ended up harming the person I was trying to rescue. It's easy to get carried away with the chainsaws :saw:

I haven't heard a whole lot about the sequel but it's a safe bet part 2 is coming.

Apparently, those who own the rights to Dawn Of The Dead are suing Capcom because Dead Rising infringes on their intellectual property, thanks to the game using zombies in a mall for the purposes of social commentary.

I could've sworn I heard a story like that ages ago.

Anyway, Dead Rising was loads of fun. I don't have a 360 around, but I liked blasting zombies into little pieces and throwing pies at them and chopping them up in brutal ways.

I'm surprised Capcom just didn't license the rights to Dawn and used characters from the movie (original preferably).

Or at the very least, Capcom could have licensed the movie anyway, even if they weren't planning Dawn Of The Dead: The Game. Doing that would have more than likely covered their asses.

I really enjoy playing Dead Rising. Chopping up zombies, shooting zombies, running over zombies with lawn mowers... what more do you need. I've had plenty of hours of fun with this game and I would love a part 2.

The thing is they have a damn disclaimer on the box. Should have been good enough.:|

Thing is the game is zero to do with either movie, so handing out a small fortune for a big movie license you don't need is a pretty dumb idea.

If Capcom lose, does this mean MKR group are going to sue View Askew for Mallrats (social commentary set in a mall)?

There are similarities, but really the makers of Night of the Living Dead could sue anyone that makes anything zombie related by this logic (the owners of dawn of the dead).

The game doesn't have any characters from the movie, it doesn't have the score from the movie. It's not even the same mall and it takes place in a different time. I feel like they have no case.

The thing is, Romero and everyone else involved with Night of the Living Dead don't even have a stake in it anymore. It's been in the public domain for quite a while now.

Is this game going to be getting a PC port? I think I heard that it would, but I've not seen any news about it in ages.

That is sort of the point I'm trying to make. I feel like zombies in a mall is public domain as well. That movie is what, almost 30 years old now.

Well, Dawn of the Dead probably won't go in the public domain like Night did because the current copyright holders won't fuck up like the holders for Night did.

I do agree with you though: suing because something has zombies in a mall is kind of crazy. Then again, imagine if the Dawn remake would have been released under a different title without giving Romero credit. That probably would have led to a lawsuit, too, so I can see it going either way I guess.

And why are they suing 2 1/2 years later....makes no sense.

...because the current copyright holders won't fuck up like the holders for Night did.

Wasn't the initial fuck-up that Romero failed to copyright the film in the first place? I was under the impression that they never had a copyright, which was in part what inspired the remake (it gave them some semblance of control over the property).

The story I always heard was that it was the distributor's fault it went into the public domain. They changed the name from "Night of the Flesheaters" (I think that was it, anyway) to "Night of the Living Dead," but when they altered the title card on the prints, they forgot to add the copyright notice beneath it. This was back when all you had to do in order to acquire a copyright was put the notice in tiny print beneath the name of the movie, and since Night of the Living Dead didn't have that, it was considered public domain.

This is correct. It's unbelievable that something like that could happen.

Since nobody else posted this news, I will. Dead Rising is coming to the Nintendo Wii. (http://wii.ign.com/articles/892/892333p1.html)

Capcom Announces Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop
Wii gamers prepare for a zombie invasion.

July 21, 2008 - Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced that Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop is in development for the Wii home video game system. Based on the critically acclaimed Dead Rising, which has sold in excess of one million units since its release in 2006, Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop is scheduled to hit store shelves this Winter.

Taking advantage of the same proven technology that brought Resident Evil 4 so successfully to Wii, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop delivers a more immersive, intuitive and interactive experience as players use the Wii Remote to shoot, slash and bludgeon their way through a zombie infested shopping mall, fighting for survival.

Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, an overly zealous freelance journalist on a hunt for the scoop of a lifetime. In pursuit of a juicy lead, he makes his way to the small suburban town of Willamette only to find that it has become overrun by zombies. Frank escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be a bastion of safety but it turns out to be anything but. It will be a true struggle to survive the endless stream of enemies, but players will have full reign of a realistic shopping centre and its varied stores offering an endless supply of real and makeshift weapons to fight off the flesh-hungry mob. If Frank is running low on health he can pay a visit to one of the many restaurants or cafes for a meal in order to restore his energy and continue the fight.

The game is split into a series of individual cases, all of which Frank must complete in order to gain vital information that will allow him to piece together the truth behind the horrendous epidemic. In addition to the cases, players will be faced with the dilemma of deciding the rescue priority of the residents of Wilamette who also sought sanctuary in the mall. Depending on the player's skill, some may not be so fortunate as each rescue needs to be undertaken in a set time period, therefore players may need to delay completion of a case in order to save a fellow human.

Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop's infectious humor delivers some welcome relief from the incessant tide of zombies with players able to dress Frank up in a variety of comedic costumes and take on the undead hordes with a selection of improvised and sometimes highly ineffective weapons such as a toy sword or a football.

It will feature a whopping one hundred zombies on screen(uh...yay).

1UP has a preview for the upcoming Wii "port" of Dead Rising. Capcom invited them to preview a trial edition of the game, which will be appearing at Leipzig this week. Capcom has apparently added non human enemies this time, with one of them being a zombie poodle. In the trial, there are a maximum of 10 zombies on screen at the time, but Capcom says they are trying to get 100 before the game is finished. Additionally, the 72 hour countdown clock from the 360 version is gone. Capcom have also added multiple save slots for players to use, unlike the single one that was used on the 360 version.

For this sampler, the development team pieced together two slices of the game, starting with a roughly five-minute sequence where players could roam around and attack zombies in the middle of the mall -- encountering new creatures (such as a zombie poodle, a zombie parrot, and an overweight security guard) and weapons (such as a saw blade that can fire sharp metal discs with a flick of your wrist) in the process.

Finally grabbed a copy of Dead Rising 2: Off the Record yesterday. I like it a lot better than Dead Rising 2. Welcome back, Frank. So glad you could make it.

I still need to get both DR2 games. I have the prequel off Xbox Live, but never did spring on the full games. They are cheap enough now where I can pick up both with ease.
