View Full Version : Best Friday the 13th Pre-Credits Sequence
I would say it goes in this order:
The Final Chapter - Love the recap, it was very well done and quite genius to use the campfire legend from Part 2.
The New Blood - Another great recap that brings us up to speed, also well done and creepy.
Jason Lives - Can't beat this kickass opening.
Jason Goes To Hell - This whole scene could be a story unto itself.
Friday the 13th - Sets up the mystery well.
Friday the 13th part 2 - Better than just playing the end of the last movie like 3-D does, and is quite suspenseful.
A New Beginning - Very good opening, I enjoy it.
Part 3-D - Just the end of Part 2. But it does its job.
Freddy vs Jason - Works better as a great recap to the Nightmare series. But I do enjoy Jason's resurrection.
JTM and JX have no pre-title scene.

Jason Lives - Need I say more? My favorite scene of the entire series.
The Final Chapter - Very nice recap of the first three movies and the legend of Jason, and intercut nicely with Paul's campfire story from Part 2.
The New Blood - Great recap of the series and Jason's legend, with clips from my three favorites of the series (JL, TFC and Part 2).
A New Beginning - Just awesome and creepy, and a great way of keeping Jason's presence in the film without having him be the actual killer.
Part 2 - Dig the slow build-up that sets the tone and mood of the movie.
Part 1 - Moody and creepy, sets up the film well.
Part 3 - Nothing too spectacular, but as you said it does the job. I rather like the moment where we see Jason pull out the machete from his wound in Part 2, nice way of maintaining continuity.
Jason Goes To Hell - Very cool opening and one of the better moments of the film.
Freddy Vs. Jason - Like you said, more of an NOES recap, but a good one and Jason's resurrection is pretty good.
Jason X - Pretty much the only remotely enjoyable moment of the movie for me.
Jason Takes Manhattan - Bleh. Bland and weak.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter - The montage was an absolutely perfect way to recap the first three films and set the mood for the "finale" of the series. I've always been amazed at how damn good the first four films are and how they stay true to one another. I've said it many times, but I consider the first four films one, big movie, and it's my favorite horror movie. Before I owned any of the films and would rent the films often, whenever I would rent part 4, I would end up really, really wishing I had the first three films after watching the killer (no pun intended) montage.
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood - I'm a fan of montages, alright? No, in all seriousness, I felt this was a nice way to start the film. I mean, if they didn't use this montage, what would have started the film? Young Tina killing her father and waking up in a car... roll credits... definitely not as impactful a start as a montage reminding viewers of just who exactly is under the lake.
Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th: Part 2, Friday the 13th VI: Jason Lives, and Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday - These rank higher than the films not already mentioned because they start off with a kill. The first movie's opening murders throw us right into the action and kick-off the series well. Part 2's opening kill is very, very unique because the first survivor of a "Friday the 13th" film, Alice, is also the first person killed by Jason, and unless you've seen the films, that sounds like a riddle because how can someone be the first survivor but the first kill by the killer of the series? But I digress... Part 6's opening is action-packed and explains how Jason is back, like it or not, as an undead person now. JGTH's opening is probably the best thing (sans the tent sex) about that movie.
I won't even bother ranking the rest of the films because part 3's opening is just the ending of part 2 with less than 5 seconds of new footage shown (Jason crawling away without his sack), Part 5 is a dream sequence that does its job well in showing that Tommy has aged and is not quite right in the head, Part 8 and X have no pre-credit scenes, and I don't consider FvsJ a Friday the 13th film.

The New Blood is my favorite pre-credits sequence, but it's too bad everything goes downhill after that point. :X
I like the recaps but that is all they are is recaps. I think the Part 2 opening scene in the best because it is actually happening as you are watching and it is suspensful and scary as hell.

I agree Rich, the Part 2 opening was a recap and original all in one. We got the story of Part 1 and then a great opening to a new chapter.

Hmmmm, thats a toughie. My favorite would probaly be the one from Friday The 13th PartVII:The New Blood. With the recap of some of his better kills like the wheelchair guy in Part 2, and the business in Jason Lives. With I think Stacy Keatch Sr. doing the narration with it ending with, "He's still down there.....waiting." :jason:

The Final Chapter and JGTH are neck and neck for me.

I agree with both of these back, kudos.

The Final Chapter: This was the first film of the series I saw, and I never felt lost after that recap. It told the whole story of the first three films in five minutes, and was the best re-use of a scene (the campfire scene from Part 2) arguably in ANY film series.
Jason Lives: A movie within a movie. The Frankenstein-like resurrection was very old-school horror.
Jason Goes To Hell: Take the opening sequence and the climactic fight, then splice in all the Creighton Duke scenes in between ... that'd be a pretty cool movie.
A New Beginning: Far and away, the best part of the movie. All downhill after that.

I'm gonna have to say The New Blood, because the narration just sounds badass. Even if it's a re-cap, it just sounds better with dude's voice to it. Followed close second by Part 2.
