Plot Summary: It is said that Halloween is the night when the dead rise to walk among us and other unspeakable things roam free. The rituals of All Hallows Eve were devised to protect us from their evil mischief, and one small town is about to be taught a terrifying lesson that some traditions are best not forgotten. Nothing is what it seems when a suburban couple learns the dangers of blowing out a Jack-o-Lantern before midnight; four women cross paths with a costumed stalker at a local festival; a group of pranksters goes too far and discovers the horrifying truth buried in a local legend; and a cantankerous old hermit is visited by a strange trick-or-treater with a few bones to pick. Costumes and candy, ghouls and goblins, monsters and mayhem... the tricks and treats of Halloween turn deadly as strange creatures of every variety—human and otherwise—try to survive the scariest night of the year.

Just by reading the plo summary, I am really looking forward to this one. I only wish it wasn't pushed back to 2008 from Halloween of this year.

It really really really sucks that it was pushed back to next year. From everything I've read, the film is pretty much finished, screenings have been held and the response has been very positive. I wonder why it was pushed back....

Gringo Loco

I think holding it back sucks too, but what can you do? I think they might be holding it back as they don't see it very profitable this Halloween season, although I think releasing it in September would do more good than harm compared to releasing it next year.

I was thinking it might have been about the competition, but it's not like there won't be any genre pictures out next September/October as well. I suppose they have their reasons.

Supposedly Trick 'r Treat is coming out in October 07 after all, although I'm not too sure how reliable Arrow in the Head is.

Despite rumors that Michael Dougherty's TRICK ‘R TREAT had been delayed, it appears that Dougherty’s directorial debut will still make the original October 5th date that Warner Bros. set out for the film.

Tired of delaying it, WB has decided to just get rid of it.

Warner Bros. Says Goodbye to 'Trick 'r Treat' (http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/11819)

We discovered today that Legendary Pictures held a screening last night for their film Trick 'r Treat, which was directed by Michael Dougherty.

Apparently Warner Bros. Pictures has decided NOT to release it and the horror film is now up for sale to whomever would be interested in distributing it. This does mean that there are no release plans for the film, so until we update you with a new distributor, don't hold your breath.

Trick 'r Treat Not Getting Dumped By WB? (http://www.joblo.com/arrow/index.php?id=13340)

TRICK R TREAT is getting the same treatement most 'small horror flicks that look like they're going to be awesome' get... it keeps getting pushed back and back with studios playing dodgeball with it.

Way back in April we gave you the bad news that TRICK R TREAT was getting dumped by Warner Brothers. Guess it just wasn't putting out. Then there were some ramblings that it was looking for distribution elsewhere.

But alas, good ol' Warner Bros. seem to be coming through in the end. Apparently Warner Brothers recently released a document regarding several of their upcoming projects, and TRICK R TREAT happens to be one of them! Isn't that something?

That's phenomenal news seeing how TRICK R TREAT has the potential to be one awesome horror flick. Here's the synopsis from IMDB: Four interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the one guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband.

That sounds awesome! I love flicks with overlaping stories, and TRICK R TREAT seems to have that sh*t set up perfectly! Can't wait for this one. It's written and directed by Mike Dougherty with a cast that includes: Quinn Lord, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, Leslie Bibb, Rochelle Aytes, Anna Paquin, Moneca Delain (below), and Lauren Lee Smith. Hopefully we get some more updates for TRICK R TREAT soon. As always, we'll keep you updated.

I hope this is true, this movie looks so awesome. I want to see it badly.

Well, I'm just speculating, but I'd be surprised if a studio picked it up and released it theatrically after it's already been dumped. Then again, stranger things have happened. At any rate, DTV would be better than not seeing it at all.

It really saddens me when someone writes it up as "the best horror movie never released."

This film needs to see the light of day, in a Big Theatrical run.

Warner Bros is basically saying it's TOO Original and that they won't know what audience it'll grab...that's bullshit. It will reach anyone looking to go to the theater to have a REALLY good movie experience/time.

This really sucks, but hopefully Dougherty will find a good distributor that believes in this film.

I got a friend of mine into the screening that Ain't It Cool News held in Los Angeles last night and he said the movie was terrific. It's a shame we won't all be able to enjoy it on the big screen this Halloween, I'd choose something like this over another SAW sequel any day.

Theprofessor

I'm one of those fortunate people who got to watch this at the Hollywood Screamfest premiere and I can tell you this movie is terrific! It's a throw back to 80s films where they were just fun and entertaining. They also screened an animated short that was kind of a prelude to Trick R Treat and served as a nice intro to the film itself. If it does go straight to dvd I hope they include it.

PeterBaker
10-28-2008, 04:29 PM
Can you elborate on how it was a throw back to the 80s horror films. I love the 80s movies, but it never came across that way. Maybe I was looking at it wrong. The plot could easily fall into it, but the film itself is an 80s throwback? More detail, with no spoilers, haha im asking a lot.. im sorry

da o.g. peterbaker

Theprofessor
10-29-2008, 12:12 AM
Well, I didn't say 80s horror flicks specifically ;). Not sure how or what you want me to elaborate this but I'll try to do this with as minimal spoilers as possible, I'll use spoiler tags to be on the safe side. But to me it was in the similar vein to Creepshow, Halloween III, Monster Squad, Killer Klowns From Outer Space.

It's not ridiculously gory and doesn't have mass amounts of sex and nudity. It was like a party movie, where you get a bunch of friends together, kick back and have a blast watching the film unfold with a volley of twists, laughs, and most importantly, scares. That's how the screening was. It was filled to the brim with rabid horror fans who cheered, laughed, and even managed a few jumps, throughout the film. Everyone was loved it.

It's based around Halloween traditions, which the character Sam severely enforces, and is an anthology film that revolves around each other. I thought the segments involving the grumpy mean old guy who battles it out with Sam and the urban legend segment about the school bus massacre gave off the biggest 80s vibes.

The film didn't have characters who were just evil for the sake of being evil, and kill for the hell of it except for maybe one, the principal. All the other characters only went after those who were doing wrong. Sam would go after those who broke tradition, (Kind of spoilers I would suggest not reading) the werewolf only killed someone who attacked it first in human form, and the zombie kids only went after the other kids when they played a cruel prank on a girl they considered a social outcast It's kind of a warning, or a cautionary tale, like "Follow the tradition or suffer the consequences."

Dunno if that helps, but, yeah. I'll be picking this bad boy up when it comes out.

Jigsaw
10-29-2008, 12:16 AM
That's surprising to hear that TRT is a fun movie as opposed to a darker one, which the trailer very much makes it look like. It sounds like a cool movie nevertheless.

Trick Treat tests (http://joblo.com/arrow/index.php?id=14390)

Well, it looks like WB may have finally woken up and smelled the cyanide-spiked coffee. It appears that they are now test-screening writer/director Michael Dougherty’s masterpiece once again. Perhaps the slew of positive buzz that TRICK has recently received from a number of festival-type screenings was enough proof to show that yes, they CAN make money with it. I don’t get why creative and fun movies such as this have to go through so much shit just to score a f*cking theatrical release and absolute crapfests like PROM NIGHT come prancing into the multiplexes with ease. It ain’t right!

TRICK R TREAT COMING HOME THIS OCTOBER (http://chud.com/articles/articles/19078/1/TRICK-R-TREAT-COMING-HOME-THIS-OCTOBER/Page1.html)

Just watching some of my favorite bits from Trick R Treat in a brand new trailer made me smile; Mike Dougherty's Halloween anthology film is a bona fide classic, and while it's a tragedy that Warner Bros has been sitting on it for about two years now it looks like it will at least get some sort of release. That new trailer includes a sting at the end where it's announced that the film will hit Blu-Ray and DVD this October.

I really hope that Warner Bros promotes the film by setting up at least a handful of screenings. This is a movie that works magnificently in a crowded theater, a movie that's a great date flick. The trailer uses a Wizard magazine quote saying that Trick R Treat is the best Halloween film in 30 years, but I disagree. I think it's the best Halloween film I have ever seen.

Click here to watch the trailer and mark your calendars for October. (http://www.totaleclips.com/player/Splash.aspx?formatId=10&bitrateId=314&vendorId=9&eclipId=e50842&playerId=38)

This leaked. I'll be watching it in a few minutes before the Eagles game. Sorry I couldn't help it because I've been anticipating this movie for so long. I'm gonna buy it on the 27th though
ADDED:
Well...wow, this is one of the first movies in a while to live up to all of it's hype. I mean...I thought this was awesome. I really like how the stories are woven together in not the typical anthology fashion, like one story after another, there all interspliced..

My favorite plot is probably the coven of the female vampires followed by the one with the kids and the urban legend. And the last story...the little demon thing in the costume terrorizing the serial killers next door neighbor looks like a baby Pumpkinhead, haha

This is a definite buy. I won't be able to watch any movies on Halloween until late that night (it technically won't even be Halloween), but Im gonna be proud to put this into my Halloween line up every year.

Im really suprised...awesome film, definitely recommend it.

My favorite plot is probably the coven of the female vampires

It's actually a coven of female werewolves which has pretty kick ass FX by the way, but it's all good ;)

I personally like the one involving the school bus, it was very much in the EC tradition, although the whole film was.

Like the rest of you, I can't wait for this release and will be picking it up immediately and holding a viewing party with some friengs and relatives.

And it is a bunch of bullshit when this modern day masterpiece is not released in theaters and we get stuck with a bunch of shitty "horror" flicks at the cinema.

All the glowing reviews may intice me to change my mind.

I passed it up at Best Buy. I picked it up and considered it...

Then I had a traumatic flashback to Creepshow 3 and chucked it back onto the shelf. Maybe I'll give it a go.

Yea I also picked it up at Best Buy but, put it back on the shelf. I didn't know it was an anthology. It looks to be pretty good but, at BB it was $27.99 for the Blu-ray. I thought, screw that. I'll just wait until it's $20 or so.

this movie was pure bliss.

Sam is one of the greatest characters ever.

We rented this for work the other night; after all the kids go to sleep we watch a horror movie every Wednesday night. I gotta say I was pretty impressed with this movie, took a little while to pick up but all in all it was a pretty good movie.

I think the whole Creepshow vibe was very apparent but other than that the story was pretty original and it had a damn good cast. I hope they make more types of this movie or maybe even a direct sequel to this.

Great horror movie, one of the best of the decade. I absolutely loved the four stories tying into one and the Samhain character was badass. 9/10

Great Halloween/anthology flick. Not exactly an anthology film in the traditional sense, but I liked how it was set in one place on one night and how Sam sorta tied it all together. Love that little dude.

After having watched a bootleg before, I finally found one copy left at Wal-Mart that someone had put in the wrong spot on the shelf. Otherwise, they had zero copies that I could find. One of the best horror movies for me in years. It's more of a throwback to the 80's/90's type of feel and the character of Sam is the coolest little evil character to come along in a long while. His longest segment was my favorite, though this wasn't a typical anthology since it was all connected in some way. Terrific movie.

I've had this blu ray for several days but can't watch it yet because I need to "update my software" to be able to play it in my PS2, can't begin to tell you how irritating that is...I'll be seeing it this week as soon as I can and can't wait. Anxious to see what all the buzz is about.

It's been next to impossible to find this thing in stores around here, I've never seen a dtv film fly off the shelves like this before.

It doesn't take that long to upgrade your PS3 software, assuming you've got a broadband connection You might want to watch out though--last I heard, the latest update has caused a lot of problems with players.

Mine isn't connected to the internet...I've heard that the SAW game updates the system automatically, so I'm probably going to try that and if it doesn't work a guy I work with told me I can bring it to his house and he knows how to upgrade it.

If I'd known I'd had to deal with all this aggrevation just to watch things I've already payed for, I probably would've said f*** PS3, and just bought a straight up blu ray player and gotten a Wii system.

The Dream Master
10-19-2009, 01:28 AM
If you've got a flash drive, it's actually quicker to upgrade. Just download the update from the official website, follow the directions, load it into your PS3, and it only takes a few minutes.

But, like I said, I'd stay away from updating to the 3.0 upgrade. It's bricked more than a few players. Trick 'r Treat apparently doesn't need that software version because I'm still running an older version and it played fine.

And, for what it's worth, pretty much all Blu-ray players still require firmware updates. Latest software issues aside, the PS3 is one of the better Blu-ray players, if only because Sony upgrades it constantly.

Well I bought the SAW game tonight and it upgraded my system for me, so I was able to finally see this a few hours ago; awesome movie. Definitely can't think of a better dtv film.

I had the day off today, so I went to Blockbuster, and they finally had one copy of Trick 'r Treat available to rent. I tried twice before Halloween, but it was no use. I figured, in the words of Blanche Deveraux, "better late than pregnant," so I rented it.

I really, really, really, REALLY like this movie. Its one of the best new-to-me horror films I've seen in quite awhile, and what I love about it is that it feels so much different than what I'm used to seeing these days. The movie is a lot of FUN, and I appreciate that.

I just have a few minor nitpicks sprinkled throughout the film, and I didn't love the last stretch of the film (I didn't hate it, but I thought it was a weak ending for the hour and some-odd minutes that preceeded it).

I will buy this on DVD and recommend it to people, though, most definitely.

Saw it yesterday, really good movie.
I like that it was an anthology but it was all one big story relating to each other even a little bit.

I watched this with a couple friends yesterday. It wasn't bad. I would have liked to see those fairy tale women's boobs though. I mean, they were not significant characters in the film, and if it were Friday the 13th you know you would have.

Anyway, it was an enjoyable anthology which was a tribute to the actual holiday of Halloween. Until this film, we really had no movies, besides the Halloween franchise, that celebrated the holiday. Cheers to Trick 'R' Treat for providing us with a new classic linked to our favorite day of the year.

I loved it. This'll definitely be a movie I watch every Halloween. Beautifully shot & well-acted. Dylan Baker is gold as always. I love that man. Also, the effects didn't really seem all shitty CGI either, which is always a plus in my book. The stuff with the wolves may have been CGI...well the transformations/losing the skin but I don't really know. Either way, I didn't think it was bad at all. That particular story was probably my least favorite though. My favorite being the zombies of the children on the bus.

All in all, a modern Halloween classic that I'll enjoy for years to come.

I watched this the same night I watched Repo. Not to rain on anyone's parade - I thought this was the superior movie. It was just all around fun to watch, and the kills were actually pretty decent.

I have to agree and wonder why they didn't wind up releasing this in theaters to try and compete with Saw? I mean, it very honestly could have beat out Saw V it marketed right.

Finally saw this last night and loved it. A modern classic for sure. It nailed the whole Halloween atmosphere perfectly. I think the school bus story was the best while the werewolf story was the weakest. And I feel kinda dirty thinking the girls who played Rhonda and Macy were cute (though I know the actress who played Macy is actually 19).

Has anyone read the script for this that's floating around online? It's an early draft and quite different. There's no school bus massacre, almost all the names are different, and the werewolf stuff is totally different. I actually like what the school bus massacre replaced. Some kids go into a cemetary/pumpkin patch (would have been an awesome visual) and pretend to summon a dead cat back to life to trick one of their friends. It goes wrong and you end up with zombies everywhere. Maybe the sequel can have that.

I just mean that certain people make it seem overrated in the sense that they have tried to say it's practically one of the greatest horror movies of all time.

As with any movie, I personally believe that a great movie is one that sticks with you after repeated viewings, and it holds up well overtime.

Trick 'r Treat does look to be one of those films, though.

It's probably the best Halloween themed horror movie of the last decade or so.

Agreed. The hype for this was pretty big & when I finally watched it, I wasn't disappointed. I really liked it. I don't think it's one of the best horror movies ever made but it's amongst the best from the past ten years, easily. Probably better than a handful of stuff from the 1990s & before too.

Rick

Rick, do you think there's room for asequel?

Maybe, I'm not sure about sequels to anthology films.
The only recurring character is the character in the story link, so I guess you could have the little burlap-sack headed thing link a bunch of other Halloween stories during another year.

Actually I thought that thing could have been in a movie on it's own as the embodiment of the spirit of Halloween or something.
But the character is used to really good effect this way as well.
A solo film would probably turn out really generic, so using it as the link and giving it it's own story works well.
