Six Feet Under is my favorite death metal band, started by former Cannibal Corpse vocalist Chris Barnes and Obituary guitarist Allen West. There isn't much about this band that I don't love (well, maybe except Bringer of Blood). I love their sound, mixing classic and death metal, and it's basically death metal that everyone can appreciate. This was the band that got me into death metal in the first place. I think some of Chris' best lyrics are in SFU, and their riffs are awesome. They seem to take on a lot of shit in the death metal community, which I don't get at all. Yeah, they covered Back in Black and a bunch of other songs (including KISS' "War Machine", which is coincidentally my favorite KISS song), but honestly, that just makes them more fun to listen to in my opinion. I don't see how anyone could possibly take those 2 albums seriously. Their last album, Commandment, kicked major ass, and their in the middle of recording a new one as we speak! I personally can not wait. Chris Barnes in one of my biggest heroes, and I'm glad I found this band, because if I didn't I wouldn't listen to Cannibal Corpse or any other death metal. Anyone else dig em?

Favorite albums
Maximum Violence
True Carnage
Commandment

I've only heard Bringer Of Blood and the Hells Bells cover, I enjoyed them both. I have to say I liked the Hells Bells cover a lot more than the original AC/DC version (I was never an AC/DC fan, could never get into them).

Well, considering that AC/DC is my 3rd favorite band (or fuck, maybe my 2nd. I don't know) I can't agree about it being better, but it is a damn good version of the song. You should definitely pick up their album Commandment. It's not one of those albums that you have to b e a hufe fan of the band to appreciate it, which is what I love about SFU. They just play what worked for them, and what continually works. And I can't help but notice that since Chris' departure from Cannibal Corpse, SFU has been quite gorier than Corpse (well, maybe not Warpath and Haunted. They were more similar in scope with later Death albums lyrically.)

anyway, here's a few songs for you to listen to. hope ya dig em!

Thanks for posting those songs, those are pretty good.

I don't think there are any solos on Haunted, Alive and Dead, or Warpath. That doesn't make me appreciate the albums any less, but I definitely prefer Steve Swanson as the guitarist. That said, "Lycanthropy" is one of their absolute best. It's a really haunting song.

Lycanthropy is probably my favorite song of their's I've heard so far, I like it a lot.

If ya wanna hear some real interesting shit, play those 3 songs together. It's pretty weird sounding, ha ha. My favorite song is probably No Warning Shot, since that was the song that really got me into them. And ya can't beat a chorus that conisists of "die motherfucker, DIE!!! DIE!!!" ha ha. The only album I can't say I really like too much is Bringer of Blood. THere are about 2 or 3 great songs, but the rest is just a total decline. It also has the worst vocals by Chris, well, maybe that's the song "Dead and Buried."

I heard the title track on BOB on the Headbanger's Ball a few years back and liked it.

I like the riff of "Bringer of Blood." The lyrics are pretty sparse, but so are the lyrics in "Mainpulation." That is a good song, but most of Bringer of Blood ("Sick in the Head" etc.) really sucked. Thankfully, they corrected it with 13, a great album.

So far, I like Lycanthrophy the best, and also the Hells Bells cover. I like the much more demonic and sinister sound it has, and Chris' vocals are much better, too.

In my opinion Haunted, Maximum Violence and some of Warpath are the only albums worth a listen. They went way downhill after Allen left, and I personally think Chris needs to start let some one else produce them again.

Well, that's cool. To each their own. My favorite albums by em are Maximum Violence, True Carnage and Commandment. Haunted and Warpath are really good and have some of my favorite songs on them, but I think something was kind of missing from the band at that point, but that's just my opinion. Have you checked out Commandment? It's awesome.

Nah, the last Six Feet Under purchase I made was years ago and it was Bringer of Blood and only because it cost 99 cents. I promptly sold it back. That being said, some of my favorite songs by them were:

The Enemy Inside
Silent Violence
Lycanthropy (anybody ever hear the Fear Factory song that ripped this song off?)
Still Alive
Beneath a Black Sky
Human Target
Remains of You
Suffering in Ecstacy
No Warning Shot
Bone Saw
Revenge of the Zombie
War is Coming
Death or Glory
Victim of the Paranoid
Torture Killer
Hacked to Pieces

Well, I'll say that besides the title track (which isn't all that great), Amerika the Brutal, When Skin Turns Blue, and Murdered in the Basement, Bringer of Blood is a fuckin' horrible album. 13 and Commandment are well worth the purchase though, if ya ever see em in a Best Buy.

Here's the song "One Bullet Left," one of my SFU favorites. It's got Ice T as a guest. For those who thought that the best rap/metal collaboration was Anthrax's version of "Bring the Noise," you gotta check this shit out.

Well, I just won Warpath, Maximum Violence, True Carnage, Double Dead, and Bringer of Blood off of eBay... all for under 20 bucks! I love those eBay lots. My Bringer of Blood has a different cover though, that that demon jester thing. It's like some dude with a nasty face holding a book or something.
ADDED:
Well, the albums came in today! And the Bringer of Blood I got has to be a limited edition or something. It's got a thick digipack case, and a bonus DVD with the making of the album, a photo gallery, and an introduction by Chris! And I got the limited Double Dead with the bonus live DVD, and the version of Maximum Violence with the 2 bonus tracks! (Wrathchild, and Iron Maiden cover, and Jailbreak, a Thin Lizzy cover). Fuck yeah! The album cover for my Bringer of Blood is a guy holding a Bible or something, I think it's supposed to be the Devil, he's got a twisted face, and if you look you can see that impaled on a pole chick from Cannibal Holocaust. I'll try to find a picture of it.

Ya know, I really take back a lot of what I said about the Bringer of Blood album. I've been listening to it more and more lately, it's a pretty good album! The vocals aren't the greatest, and I'm not the biggest fan of "Claustrophobic" or "Sick in the Head", but the rest is some pretty fun stuff, especially "Ugly" "Murdered in the Basement" and "Braindead", one of their best songs in my opinion. I definitely like it a lot better. The lyrics in "My Hatred" are pretty funny.

You know, i'm actually starting to get into the older SFU albums.....namely Haunted and Maximum Violence. I can't really stand the more recent ones, but those 2 are actually pretty good to me now.

Yeah dude, those are by far the best IMO. I don't like the one that came in between those, Warpath, that much but it's better than anything after I'd say. I love Haunted though, if they had kept that style of groove death with badass riffs I would still like them.

From what i've listened to, Haunted is the only one i'd actually buy. I like how his vocal style is similiar to when he was in Cannibal Corpse. But on the later stuff, his voice has changed, and he doesn't sound quite the same.

Lance Lives
07-20-2008, 05:26 AM
Yeah, I really don't like what his voice evolved into. I think it all started on The Bleeding and just got worse.

Also, I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but does anybody else think that the song Hacked to Pieces is either an homage to his days in Corpse or just Barnes not realizing that he was MAJORLY plagerizing himself? Here's some choice snippets from the lyrics:

I'll pick up a hammer and smash in your face
Look into my eyes, these eyes are dead
As I kill, I still cum blood

MaDMaNMaRz

I'm thinking it might be more of an homage to Corpse.

Damn Lance, ya beat me to pointing that one out. :D I dunno, I like his voice from Bleeding on. That could be because I listened to SFU before Corpse. Honestly, I love all of their albums almost equally. Maximum Violence and True Carnage are definitely my faves. Warpath I've always felt was a bit underrated, I think it's a great record but some others don't, but that's cool. I should also mention that they are mixing the new album now, accrording to the updates they've given, so the album should be out within the next few moths hopefully. I personally can't wait, Commandment was great, I wonder how this new one will sound.

Damn dude, they don't mess around...what are they averaging, like an album every year or more?

Yeah, I guess sorta like the KISS of death metal. I'm still wondering when they're gonna do the U.S. tour for Commandment.

The new album news were finally announced a few days ago. The album is to be called DEATH RITUALS, and it's going to be released November 11th!!! I myself am extremely excited. Commandment, their last album, kicked absolute ass. I can only hope the same for this album... my only hope is that there isn't much of a presence of the strained vocals like on Bringer of Blood... Chris has been sounding a little rough during live shows this year, but then again, he's been sounding like that for a while now. According to an article on the Metal Blade site, some of the song titles are "Shot in the Head" "Death by Machete" "Involuntary Movement of Dead Flesh" and "Seed of Filth." The album art is pretty sweet too, you can see that also at the Metal Blade site. It's one of their best album covers in my opinion. I can't fuckin wait for this.... and hopefully we'll get a new song soon!

Here's my review of Death Rituals.

1. Death by Machete - Holy shit!!! This song kicks ass. It starts out a bit differently than you'd expect an SFU song to start, with a clean guitar riff, then it goes fucking crazy and sppeds up. Chris' growls on this song are incredible. They don't quite match up to the throat deteriorating work he did on "Hammer Smashed Face" or "Impulse to Disembowel", it's quite evident he's gotten a lot better since the vocally disastrous Bringer of Blood album. The riff is this song is quite cool, and the solo is kickass. Even Greg Gall's drumming is starting to fit more into the old style of death metal. An extremely 90 Cannibal Corpse-ish song, and one of my favorites on the album. 10/10

2. Involuntary Movement of Dead Flesh - Along with having one of the coolest fucking song titles ever, this song is a throat ripping piece of death metal as well. It features a quite cool riff, and some pretty damn impressive double bass drumming from Greg, as well as a steady rhythm from Terry. As with the previous track, Chris' vocals are some of the best in years from him. There's also a sweet fast section in the middle of the song. One of the better songs here. 10/10

3. None Will Escape - Another crushing riff opens this track. The lyrics, or what I can make out, are pretty cool. More cool growling from Chris, along with his signature pig squeals. A cool breakdown in the middle, followed by another finger-blistering solo from Steve. Greg's drumming is also top notch, with a lot of fills and, to my surprise, blast beats!!!! As usal, Terry keeps perfect rhythm with the brutality. I quite dig this one. 10/10

4. Eulogy for the Undead - I really love the song title to this one. This song isn't quite as good as the others presented on the album, but I do like it a lot. Chris is straining a little bit on this song, but again, it's nothing like "Dead and Buried (Living Life in the Grave)" (which I consider to be his worst vocal ever.). A pretty cool riff opens this one, it's a bit more reminiscent of Haunted/Maximum Violence/Commandment than True Carnage/13, like the majority of the album. It keeps a quick pace though, with some heavy double bass, and another cool solo from Steve Swanson. One of the groovier songs on the album. Not among my absolute favorite songs on the album, but that may change in time, and it is still a very cool song. 7/10

5. Seed of Filth - HOLY FUCK!!!! I remember it taking at least 15 minutes to wipe the smile off of my face and stop laughing in joy when this song was released. It starts with yet another soul crushing riff, sounding like a death metal version of Metallica's "Sad But True." Not much double bass here, but Greg and Terry keep a steady rhythm on this track. Chris vocals here sound EVIL!!! He sounds like he was fucking possessed when he recorded this song, especially during the chrous. From what I can make out, the lyrics are classic Barnes material ("an experiment of decay, unleash the seed of filth"). Steve's tapping solo is fucking awesome. This one goes neck in neck with "Death by Machete" as my favorite songs from the album go. Not only one of the best on the album, but also one of my favorite Six Feet Under songs as well. 10/10

6. Bastard - Well, what can I say? "Bastard," for those who don't know, is a cover of a Motley Crue song. It also happens to be my favorite Motley Crue song, and to be quite honest, I've been waiting for a death metal band to cover it for some time now, as I've always felt the lyrics were pretty gruesome (Out go the lights, in goes my knife, pull out his life, consider that bastard dead... Bastard! Consider that bastard dead! Bastard! Make it quick, blow off his head!!). SFU's cover of the song is quite good. Even if I don't like it quite as much as Motley's, it's still a pretty cool cover. 10/10

I'll finish this later.
