Another comicbook series is getting the big-screen treatment, this time in the form of Witchblade.

'Witchblade' sharpened for bigscreen (http://www.variety.com/VR1117985461.html)

Platinum Studios, Top Cow Prods. and Arclight Films will team on a live-action feature adaptation of "Witchblade," based on the Top Cow comicbook franchise.

The comicbook introduced the Witchblade mythology, which centers on an ornate jewel-encrusted gauntlet that gives extraordinary powers to the wearer, a specially chosen female from each generation.

Pic will be produced by Arclight's Gary Hamilton and Nigel Odell, Platinum Studios' Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and Steve Squillante of Havenwood Media. Top Cow's Marc Silvestri and Matt Hawkins will be exec producers with Platinum Studios' Rich Marincic and Greenberg Group's Randy Greenberg.

The comicbook franchise has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide since debuting in 1995 and spawned a 2000 telepic that turned into a weekly series that ran for two seasons on TNT. "Witchblade" has been published in more than 21 languages and 55 countries, with merchandise widely sold. The most recent incarnation was an anime TV show in Japan by Gonzo Digimation in 2006.

"This property is the cornerstone of our upcoming production and sales slate," said Arclight CEO Gary Hamilton. "We hope to be able to start production in September."

The companies are already eyeing a location shoot in Australia.

Deal comes as Universal prepares a June 27 release on the Timur Bekmambetov-directed "Wanted," which stars Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman. Pic is an adaptation of a Will Eisner-created comic that Top Cow published from 2003-05.

Platinum Studios is involved in screen transformations of several titles from its comics library, including "Atlantis Rising," a DreamWorks drama being produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and "Cowboys and Aliens," another DreamWorks title that Kurtzman and Orci are producing with Imagine Entertainment. Platinum Studios has a Disney deal for "Unique" and is partnered with Hyde Park Entertainment on "Dead of Night," based on the Italian comicbook series "Dylan Dog."

I never read any of the comics, but I saw some episodes of the show, it wasn't half-bad IMO. Not my kind of thing, but it wasn't terrible either.

As an aside to anyone interested, Witchblade: The Complete Series will be out on DVD on July 29, 2008. It's seven discs and collects season 1, season 2 and the original pilot film.

I've never read the comics or watched the show, but I've heard decent things about the show, so I might give it a watch.

The pilot movie and some of the episodes were fairly entertaining from what I remember.

Good to hear this. Although I was never that big a fan of the old TNT series, I was surprised to see it canned despite a strong following and decent ratings. I had heard awhile back that the show's cancelation stemmed from the show's star, Yancy Butler, and her drinking problem. Hopefully this'll adapt the comic's opening storyline with Sara Pezinni getting the Witchblade, or even the Microwave Murderer storyline.

For casting of the role, I always thought Vannesa Marcel(General Hospital, The Rock, Vegas) would be perfect for the part of Sara.

I didn't like the show, but I was fairly fond of the comic series back when I was still into comics. I may check this out when it's released.

'Bout all I remember about this comic was that Witchblade was lookin' pretty risque most of the time. What else was Yancy Butler in? Was it Hard Target?

I'm almost certain she was, but too lazy and impatient to look it up on this computer. I do like that movie though, even if it has nothing to do with this thread.

I find it kinda weird that this is being adapted. I wonder if they'll do more Image/Top Cow stuff? Fathom and Darkchylde were both cool.

Well , Fathom has been in "development Hell" for awhile. First FOX Animation was planning to adapt the first story arc into an animated flick. But those plans were scrapped when FOX Animation was shut down after TITAN A.E. bombed. Later on, it was supposed to be in development by James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment as a live action feature. With Jessica "So hot looking you'll cry ." Alba in the role of Aspen Matthews. Since that little newsblurb, I've heard nothing about it since, or than from Fathom creator Micheal Turner, saying it's still in development.

Randy Queen's Darkchylde, on the other hand, is being made into live action flick supposedly even as we speak. It's being filmed over in New Zealand, with the effects by Weta Studios, the blokes behind the effects on the Lord of the Rings flicks, and King Kong. But other than one publicity shot of the actress playing the main character in Darkchylde, Ariel Chylde, in makeup, I've heard bubbkiss since last July. I started a thread in the "Recent & Upcoming Films" section of this distinguished forum about the flick, but haven't updated since there hasn't been anything to update it with.

Who was the extremely tall chick they distinguished with the role of Darkchylde? I always found it funny how long her legs were.

Don't know the chick's name as of yet playing the long-legged Ariel Chylde, but here's a pic of her in make-up. http://www.newsarama.com/movies/Ariel/Ariel.html

Update from Arrow In The Head.com. (http://www.joblo.com/arrow/index.php?id=12593) Director Micheal Rymer(Battlestar Galactica, Queen of the Damned) will be helming the flick. From a screenplay written by Everette DeRoche.
