Here is the thread to discuss the trailers/tv spots for the Friday the 13th films.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of the first three trailers as they show every single death in the films which eradicates any possible feeling of suspense/terror when you actually watch the movie and the killings happen. Thank God I saw those three F13 flicks before catching any of the trailers. Whoever did the voice overs is creepy as fuck, though.
My favorite trailer is probably the one for The Final Chapter. Least favorite is undoubtedly the one for Jason Lives.
I don't like the old trailers. They give away too much. I am glad I never saw those before I saw the movies. I would have known every death before it happened.

Yeah, those first three trailers ought to be equipped with spoiler warnings. For me, the best from the batch would be The New Blood. It makes the film seem so action packed, and it didn't let us down either. The TFC trailer wasn't bad either. I personally enjoy the JTM trailer, just because those scenes are there only in the trailer. It's just something new. And yeah, the Jason Lives trailer doesn't give shit away.

I agree with everyone here on the first three trailers. Wasn't needed to give all the deaths away.
Oh, and before I forget, YouTube user 'fromthemorgue' makes his own custom trailers for the F13 flicks (among other horror films), but the catch is, he tries to make them look modernized. You know, what a F13 trailer could look like if it was released today. They're really fantastic.
F13: http://youtube.com/watch?v=240QxVU6ygg
F13 2: http://youtube.com/watch?v=SjvhMNDoSUI
The F13 3 one is going to be up on Monday I think he said. Of course if everyone's already seen this shit, I'll feel like an idiot. :D
I liked those modernized trailers much better then the ones the studio put together.

I love watching those old trailers. But he did an excellent job on the modernized ones. That's exactly how they would be in todays market...very very cool.

I totally agree that he trailers for the first three films gave away way too much, but I absolutely love the teaser for Jason Lives. I had seen the TV ads back in the summer of '86, but I never saw the teaser until the box set came out. I thought it was a perfect teaser.

The Jason Lives teaser trailer is great. Too bad the movie didn't end up being as dark as the teaser made it look.
A little tidbit...they used shots from that teaser in The New Blood's prologue. For years, I thought that was new footage they shot for the movie until I saw that teaser on DVD.

Way to make with all the trailers! Great first post.
I agree with the notion that older trailers just show too much. The further back you go in cinema, the more they reveal - some tell the whole story from beginning to end.
The first F13 trailer I remember seeing was JGTH's, seen on television. It definitely grabbed my attention, especially that split-second glimpse of the Hellbaby (I thought maybe it was the Devil) and the Duke's "I don't think so."
I hate that the JX trailer showed Uber-Jason. I'm not a big fan of the Uber look, but it should've remained a surprise. I guess bu that point Uber was all over the web, so they figured it didn't matter, but still.
The first time I saw FvJ's trailer it blew me away. Jason walking past the "torpedo" tanks, Freddy flying out of the lake - I couldn't wait to see it all play out on the big screen. Watched it again and again.

I also dislike the JX trailer...
Here's a link to 3 very rare Japanese trailers I encoded from my personal collection: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcI7IsOhHOQ :)

Those Japanese video trailers give away the kills worse than the American theatrical trailers. Still, cool to see them.
The Jason Lives teaser is the most dark and scary thing ever associated with Friday the 13th, IMHO. It's just so damn creepy. It seems like this teaser influenced the tone of Friday the 13th: The Series (Or vice versa), right down to what sounds like Fred Mollin's music (It could be him, I don't know.)

That brings up a good question: Who did the music for that teaser trailer? My first guess would be Manfredini since he scored the film, but there's nothing like that music in the film itself. So does anyone know for sure?

The trailer score could have been done by a completely different person. Usually there are different people in charge of the trailers than the movie... different producers, (sometimes) directors, etc.
I swear it sounds like Fred Mollin, and he was in the Mancuso mafia by that time. You can tell it was done on a synthesizer (Which is Fred's thing), and the little child singing voices he always has in his music.
I would bet on Mollin. The real question is if Manfredini did the trailer music for JGTH, which was also used in the trailer for In the Mouth of Madness.

I love the first four and part 7 trailers. As well as Jason goes to Hell's trailer.
FvJ trailer was okay.
Jason X trailer sucked.
JTM trailer sucked.
Jason Lives trailer didn't suck, but it wasn't very...well...it was okay, but told me nothing about the film. At least it didn't tell me everything about the film :D
A New Beginning trailer is good once Violet comes up. But up to the point, it's so poor. Matt's voiceover sounds like it was a part of a documentary on the film, not a trailer. And the growl from Roy falling off the barn is kind of comical.

It's not exactly fair to judge the Jason Lives teaser against the other full trailers because it's just a teaser. It's really not supposed to tell you much about the film other than getting your attention and making you want to see more. You know?

Yeah, I know. But did it work? Hmmm
Wheatjedi
07-18-2007, 01:28 AM
I'm sure it worked for some people and not for others. My first time to see it was as a part of the DVD box, but I definitely would have been interested if I had seen it back in '86 because it creeped me out when I saw it on disc. I only saw the television commercials promoting Part VI that summer.

I can tell you this... in Japan the "Friday the 13th" films are known as "The 13th of Friday".

Gang, I happened to notice this... on the Friday 6 teaser on disc, no title.
But back in the day, Cinemax used to show pieces of a film's trailer before the actual movie, and I have on VHS the teaser before an airing of JL... and when the coffin opens, the words "JASON LIVES" (in the Friday font) floats out of the coffin.
Paramount apparently couldn't even get the TEASER for this one right! Jebush!

I love the openings to the old friday trailers with the paramount screen and the "ki ki ki, ma, ma, ma"

I don't know if you guys know this or not. Don LaFontaine (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0480963/), the guy who does the majority of the narration for movie trailers - the guy who commonly starts out by saying "IN A WORLD....". Anyway, he said that the original Friday the 13th trailer was his favorite of all time. I thought that was pretty interesting given the fact that he only counts to 13 and says a couple of sentences.
The Tall Man

I wonder how many trailers Don LaFontaine has done voice overs for??
Wheatjedi
07-21-2007, 03:54 PM
According to Wikipedia, he's done voice-overs for over 5000 movie trailers, TV commercials, network promotions and video game trailers.
wow, he's probably loaded then.

I still think JGTH is the best of the F13 trailers. It made the movie seem totally epic! I remember first seeing it, and thinking that this was going to be the ultimate F13. Haha, I was naive back then. I still enjoyed the film, though. I also really dig the JL trailer. It really gave me the impression that the movie was dark and scary.

This is funny, with the unfitting happy female voice thrown in. Though if you search around, all the old Korean trailers on YouTube are like this.

i love part 3 trailer The guys vioce is so cool. 3D:shock:
If I had to pick a favorite trailer despite how I feel about them, it would be the teaser for Part 6, Part 7, and all the New Line trailers. The trailer for the remake is a great one too!
Lammert

The Part 3 trailer tells a cool story.
"Weekends are great place to go out in the country, except when the weekend begins with Friday the 13th. 13 is an unlucky number, but out here so are 1 trough 12... because these are Jason's woods, and nobody leaves them alive!"
(something like that)
