The other Night of the Living Dead writer is making his own, Romero-sequel-ignoring follow-up to Night again. Russo has previously done his own sequels with the novel Return of the Living Dead (which is completely different from the movie) and the idea for Children of the Living Dead (which was also much different from the finished film). The infamous NOTLD 30th Anniversay re-edit and new scenes were all him, though.

This project was previously announced back in April '03 (http://www.horrordvds.com/vb3forum/archive/index.php/t-12015.html), with Russo planning to film it later that year.

“[DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN’s] Sam Sherman and I are teaming to produce the movie,” Russo tells FANGORIA. “I will write and direct, with Russ Streiner on as line producer. I want Debbie Rochon to star; she’s the Sigourney Weaver of zombie films.” Rochon previously worked for Russo on both the 30th Anniversary Edition of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and his new mob comedy SALOONATICS. ...

Like CHILDREN OF THE LIVING DEAD, which he co-produced and now disowns, ESCAPE is a loose sequel to the original NOTLD. Russo outlines his screenplay: “The movie opens with military people breaking into a medical compound. The place houses zombies that are being experimented on by a scientist to determine why they don’t die. The zombies escape in a van and into a rural area, where they come up against Debbie and her family. The story doesn’t stay there, however, because I didn’t want this to be like the first film. Besides zombies, there’s a sheriff and his deputy trying to figure out what’s going on, and some neo-Nazis who get mixed up in the action. There are a lot of twists and turns to the story, plus our heroine on horseback, motorcycles and zombies slipping on soap! It’s one thing after another. ESCAPE FROM THE LIVING DEAD is full of nutty surprises.”

That fell apart, and the script was eventually adapted into a comic miniseries from Avatar (http://www.avatarpress.net/v/escapeofthelivingdead/).

1971: It's been three years since the blood-soaked night that the dead rose from their graves, attacking and devouring the living. Now, the legacy of that horrific and unexplained event is about to be unleashed once again upon an unsuspecting world... But this time, there may be no escape for those in the terrifying clutches of the cannibalistic, living dead! Hidden within the concrete walls of a secret medical research lab, someone has been studying the last remaining undead remnants of the marauding zombie army.

I haven't read that yet, but I just ordered the Resurrected TPB that collects the whole thing.

Now B-D hears (http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/12051) that Escape is getting another chance at becoming a movie -

We caught wind this evening of a pretty interesting horror project from Monterrey Picture Entertainment entitled Escape of the Living Dead. John Russo, co-creator of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, wrote the script and is attached to direct the official sequel to Romero's classic '68 zombie flick. Joe Majestic, Sam Sherman will co-produce with Russ Streiner, producer of the original NOTLD. The official sequel will star Tony Todd (Candy Man, Final Destination), Gunnar Hansen (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Amber Stevens and Kristina Klebe (Halloween remake). No other details were revealed.

I also believe Bill Hinzman did a unofficial sequel to NOTLD; Zombie Nosh. Not seen it myself but everyone I know who has says it's crap.

Anyhow, I guess this Escape project could turn out good if done right. A zombie film set in the 70's would be interesting to see.

This will probably suck but I'll see it if it gets made.

I liked Hinzman's FleshEater despite it being a huge cheesy piece of shit. It's one of my favourite "bad movies."

FleshEater/Revenge of the Living Zombies/Zombie Nosh isn't really in sequel territory - it doesn't follow the original story and its zombie outbreak isn't connected to NOTLD. It does have Hinzman back in his Cemetery Ghoul outfit and NOTLD moments are replayed, occasionally with their original performers. For instance, Vince Survinski shows up to do exactly what he did in NOTLD. "Good shot."

I'm sorry but John Russo is full of crap, the only official sequel to NOTLD is Dawn of the Dead.

I only count the Romero films as the official series, but I still check out what his old buddies make.

Yeah Vince must be really blind or very bloodthirsty.

And I only count Romero's movies as the official sequels too.

And woo hoo for Slumber Party Massacre II love!

I never read the EOTLD comic, but I'm not itching to see this movie, knowing John Russo's involved. What he did with the 30th Anniversary Edition of the 1968 NOTLD, terrible! :X

He butchered NOTLD with that crap. The priest guy was terrible as was the score...which was done by the terrible priest. At least Debbie Rochon was in it for awhile as the reporter interviewing said terrible priest.

Oh man, that priest, that's some of the worst acting I've ever seen, and that's no joke.

I'm typically a fan of bad acting in general but this guy was too bad even for that.

Whats different about the 30th notld dvd?

It totally changes the musical score (which actually isn't too bad, but I prefer the original score), but the real SOB are a bunch of additional new scenes added back in which feel completely unnecessary. The scenes with the preacher are the worst :X

I've now read the Escape comics TPB. The main minseries that was based on Russo's script for the movie is decent. My first thought as I finished it was, "That's it?", but we'll see how it plays out in live action. If it's handled right, it could at least be a fun zombie flick.

Russo has an idea on how to keep zombies at bay for a night that he must really like, because he recycled it for his Escape script from his Return novel - go into a woods, find a good spot to stay in and string wire through the trees around you. Hook the wire to a gas powered generator and you're now protected by an electric fence until you run out of gas.

Bad acting can be funny in a bad movie, but in a good movie bad acting is just annoying :D

How can a movie be good in the first place if it has bad acting?

Hansen ready to ESCAPE (http://www.fangoria.com/news_article.php?id=7331)

Fango caught up with actor Gunnar Hansen recently to talk about his role in the upcoming zombie opus ESCAPE OF THE LIVING DEAD, written and directed by John Russo. The former Leatherface notes that the plot of ESCAPE, which is based on the Avatar comic, links with the original flesheating storyline begun in George A. Romero and Russo’s classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. “The premise is that, after the last outbreak, some zombies were captured for experimentation, and now they have gotten out,” Hansen tells us. “So the whole thing starts all over again.”

Unlike such recent projects as the critically lauded BRUTAL MASSACRE, ESCAPE provides the TEXAS CHAINSAW icon a much larger part. “This is a really brilliant role,” he says. “My character is a biker; he gets zombified and then becomes the lead ghoul. It’s going to be great fun, and yeah, I’m not just making a cameo appearance in this. To me, there is nothing better than being a zombie, so I’m really looking forward to that, and it will be great to be in one of the LIVING DEAD movies. This is a John Russo script and I have known him for a long time, so when I heard he was doing another LIVING DEAD, I was excited at the prospect of being one.”

Casting Breakdown (http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/39712/casting-breakdown-john-russos-escape-living-dead)

The name John Russo is a name that lives in infamy as far as Night of the Living Dead fans are concerned. Why you ask? One look at the abomination that was the Night of the Living Dead: 30th Anniversary Edition will clearly answer any questions you may have, but do yourselves a favor ... don't look at it. Don't ever look at it.

Anyway, the man is back with Escape of the Living Dead which is set to begin filming sometime late October or early November. Russo is handling the writing and the direction and the casting breakdown for this flick is as follows:

[SALLY] 18. Beautiful, athletic, heroic. When confronted with adversity, she rises to every challenge... including wiping out zombie scum. NAME ONLY. LEAD

[HENRY] 40s, doting, concerned father of Sally. He would do anything for his family but is not inherently confrontational. He is faced with the inner turmoil of balancing his paternal instincts with his non-confrontational ways when the zombie plague threatens Sally. STAR NAME ONLY...LEAD

[HONEYBEAR] Mid to late 20s. Biker Chick girlfriend of Neo Nazi leader, Bearcat's. Going against the grain, she is not some beat-up druggie, but instead is quite a stunner, blonde and beautiful and "Aryan" -- and cruel. LEAD. TOPLESS NUDITY REQUIRED

[DR MELROSE] Head of his own research facility, studying the causes, effects and benefits of zombie-ism. STAR NAME ONLY
